I strongly recommend a skilled care facility for a couple weeks to continue your intravenous antibiotics." Hearing this from my two doctors left me stunned. I knew that "skilled care facility" meant "NURSING HOME" and we all know what that means -- dirty, smelly, unskilled care, apathetic staff and residents. It's where you go when no one cares about you anymore. Where you go to die quietly alone, beset by bedsores, unwashed, usually in dirty adult diapers, with little or no actual medical care unless you have family who are there to fight for you. In other words, I was not looking forward to this. I argued, pleaded, begged and flatly refused to go. My doctors remained equally firm. I had been in the hospital for two weeks. If I went home, they said, I risked the infection gaining new strength, just when we had begun to win the battle. Well, I'd been fighting the infection for two and a half months and I sure didn't want to end up back in the hospital. So I agreed, with great trepidation, to go to a nursing home. I chose a center that was very close to my home. My first surprise came immediately when I entered the facility. I had visited nursing homes many times, and they all had a urine odor that I considered inevitable. But not here. In fact, there was no odor at all. Very pleasant surprise. I learned later how they did this in case of "accidents". One day, a resident had a diarrhea accident that really smelled up the hallway. The staff immediately began to clean the patient, the room, and began to open windows and spray air freshener up and down the aisle and into any room where the residents complained. Many of the patients, myself included, all questioned or commented loudly about what had caused the foul odor. I asked one of the nurses if our fellow resident could hear all the comments about the odor. I'll never forget her reply. "Yes! Oh, the poor lady, I bet she feels horrible. " The nurse rushed out of my room saying, "I gotta go tell her we still love her even if she is stinky!" My second surprise, when I arrived, was the public address system message: "Welcome call to room 412". Before I arrived at my room, Fred was there. Fred was the shift supervisor for the Certified Nurses Aides (CNAs) and he was very helpful and friendly. He asked my name because everyone knew each other -- the residents weren't just a number here. I found both the skill level and care to be equal or higher than that I received in the hospital. Which leads me the third surprise. My room was spotless and cleaned twice a day. They even buffed daily which was actually an annoyance because the silly machine was noisy! Twice a week I had to fend off Maria who would insist on giving me a shower. Maria, and practically her entire family, work at Sun Grove and they are all a blessing to every resident. Ricardo, Maria's nephew, was always ready to help any resident with any task. I never met more caring, helpful people. I grew to love them and many other staff members and residents at Sun Grove. There are far too many to mention since they were all outstanding in there own way. One shared personal knowledge of her cancer experience, and all shared their loving concern. These are the kinds of things that made my two and a half week stay enjoyable and also has motivated me to return there as a volunteer by attempting to set up and run a book mobile for the center's residents. I hope I will live up to the example of the staff and volunteers that cared for me. If you question me and ask what it takes to be a member of the team of a nursing home staff, I think that answer was best summed up by that nurse: "They love you even when you're stinky." -- Kay Kreisle ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Bunni :) _ _|_|_ ,|_| |_|_ || | | |_| || | | | | || | | | | _|| | | | | ||)\ ^ ^ ^ | || | | || | | || | | \\ | \\ / ejm )\ ( / \ \ / \ \ \ \ >My New Years Prayer The time has come to say good by A year of happiness and of sorrow I pray the war will end soon So we'll have a better tomorrow. Psalm 9:10 Dr. Amanda Whitworth was frustrated as she crept up a hill with eight cars in front of her. They were stuck behind a slow-moving truck, and she was in a hurry. Amanda's last patient had needed more attention that was allotted for regular examinations and she was late leaving to pick up her daughter from day-school. Now she breathed a prayer that she would not be late again. It would be the third time, and because the day-school did not tolerate parental tardiness, she would have to make new arrangements for Allie's afternoon care. Amanda silently fumed at the truck's progress. No one dared pass the truck on the long hill, as it was impossible to see oncoming cars around it. Suddenly, the truck driver waved his hand indicating that all was clear ahead. As Amanda zipped past him, it occurred to her that this man was probably a stranger to all who passed him - yet nine people trusted their lives and the lives of their families to this man. What a tremendous picture of how we do all we can do and then must trust even the smallest details of our lives to the care of God - who is a loving Heavenly Father. "From a place on the edge of tomorrow looking back at yesterday," I replied. I've been asked so many times about my writing. To the point of embarrassment I read warm, generous comments about my work and deal with them one word at a time. It's the only way I can accept it. But she wanted to be there where I go to find the words. I couldn't take her there. I could only describe it from the outside looking in. "I have fallen in love with words," I told her. "Not that I have any right to, but I have been courting them long enough that we've become one. Like a marriage, I treat words with respect and select from my limited vocabulary the ones that best tell the story as I see it." "So where do you find the stories?" she asked. "They find me. They come falling down around me like a gentle rain on a summer's evening when you are hot and tired from a long exhausting day. The thoughts are like droplets of water that hit me one by one, but after a while they all form together and saturate my mind with such an intensity that I must respond to them or drown," I told her. "So they start with a single thought?" she wondered. "No, they start with a flicker of light," I said. Then pausing for a moment to come up with an appropriate image, I was reminded of a silly, childish thing I do. "In the middle of cold winter night when you have piled on extra blankets and all the lights are off, did you ever roll over in bed and see little streaks of lightening flicker beneath the covers?" I asked. "No, I don't believe I have," she replied with an awkward look on her face. "Then you must sleep well at night. You see, my mind doesn't stop. I often awaken in the middle of the night with visions of people and places I've been. I scramble to make sense of them, but fail most every time. It's then when I tuck my head under the covers that I see them. Little flashes of light caused by static. I love when that happens. I'm creating my own personal lightening. I find peace under the covers. To this very day, whenever I want to hide away from the world, I pull the cover up over my head and think, "No one knows where I am right now." It's great! Well, the other night I rediscovered lightening," I said. Then spinning around on my heal, like a fancy magician, I said "Ta Da! "That's where the story begins. Like a spark in the dark part of my mind, it flashes and grabs my spirit. It's God talk, I believe." "God talk?" she asked. "Yes, God doesn't always use words to guide us. That's where I always went wrong. I was listening for words. God sends sparks. Little oooohs and aaaaahhhhs. Sometimes it's an unfamiliar sound that pokes at your curiosity stirring it, daring you to look. Yet, most of us turn away not recognizing that it could be the answer we have been searching for all of our lives. But we are spoiled by technology that dazzles us and steals away our imagination and buries it under brain numbing nonsense. But God Talk is sacred and singular. He sends me lightening under my covers and also people, thousands of people. Each of them writing their own story and never recognizing that they are in control of how the story ends. So I steal from them the things that they discard along the way. Brilliant thoughts, spirit filled words with wings that take flight in my soul and flood my mind with a million possibilities. But, they don't see it. I do." "Like the movie "The Sixth Sense," she said laughing. "Exactly. I see dead people, too," I said slowly and deliberately.. The smile went off her face. I laughed at her. "They are dead to the world! Dead to the gifts that God has given them. Their ears can't hear the God talk. So I see it, I hear it, I write about it and talk about it in my speeches and seminars." "Maybe it's another way," she said. "Another way for what?" I asked. "Maybe God knows that the only way He can get to some of them is to use people like you, writers, poets and speakers. Your words, His thoughts," she said. "Yes, and through you, my friend. He sent you here. You gave me my story for today. You were my spark of lightening. We are each other's light in a world that has been dimmed by negativity, doubt and fear. Be the light and listen. That's God Talk." But a smile is also a powerful weapon against toxic attitudes of all kinds. Lisa Gurnsey, of Portland, Oregon, wrote to me about a man whose smile quite literally changed her life: "I was having a horrible day -- hating my job, tired of the weather, tired of trying to keep up on bills, and just completely stressed out. I stopped at the post office in the morning and, as I was entering, an older business man commented to me that it was going to be a good day and life shouldn't be as bad as I make it look. I glared at him and simply said, 'I wish it was Friday.' "I felt better about my day when I left the post office...that man's smile and comment, although irritating at first, made me think. "The second time I ran into the man I went out of my way to say 'Happy Friday' to him and to smile. I saw him a few more times and always he was cheery and 'made my day.' "I looked for him around Christmastime to give him a card and explain how his kind words and smile that very first day made me regroup my thinking and realize I didn't have it so bad. But I have not seen him at the post office since then. I look every morning...I go at different times to see if I can catch him. Maybe he retired, maybe he is ill. I think to myself, 'I wish I had thanked him for being a kind person.' I can honestly say this man changed my life. I will work to spread that same feeling to those I see in need of a smile." Speaker Josh Hinds makes this suggestion: "Play the smiling game in your daily life. See how many people you can get to smile back at you. Keep score and tally the results at the end of each day." That sounds like a game we can all play. The rules are simple. There are lots of winners. And who knows...you may even "make" someone's day -- even if that someone is you! ~ Steve Goodier ~ -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: REAL Fantasy Trees 2! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/trees2.html Freedom Isn't Free http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/freedom.html K9 9-11 Heroes http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/k9-11.html Proud Of Our Troops 5 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/troops5.html Feather Painting 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/feather2.html Amazing Dog Houses 2 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/doghouses2.html Butchart Gardens http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bgardens.html Chinese Wal-Mart http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/chinawalmart.html Floating Hotel http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/fhotel.html Snow Fun! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/snowfun.html Wild Bear Release http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bearrelease.html -<>- >From Our Friend Melody :) Funny Prank http://999ktdy.com/funeral-taxi-prank/?trackback=email Life Is Like Coffee http://www.flickspire.com/_videos/flash/LILC/LILC.swf http://www.utah3d.net/utah-travel/capitol-reef/sulphur-creek.html Sulphur Creek in Capitol Reef National Park, 360 Degree Panorama Auld Lang Syne by Sissel (Live) Happy New Year - YouTube http://www.youtube.com/embed/VhiF-PD4E_c --- ...Awesome! We were driving through a part of town where one sees drug users and dealers on the street. As we slowed for a traffic light my friend noticed a wallet lying open on the street near a parked car. She asked me to stop and as I did she jumped out and retrieved it. I expected her to hop back in so we could give it to the police, but she waved for me to park. Rolling down the window, I asked what she was doing, and she said, "There's ID in here -- maybe the owner is in one of these houses. But the address isn't on this street. Hmmm." Recognizing her determination, I feared Barb would start knocking on doors.... Doors sheltering people who were scared of strangers, drug dealers, and users -- many of them armed to balance their fears. I parallel parked. Barb had already knocked on a couple doors asking for the name on the ID, without disclosing what she wanted. The first door didn't open, the folks inside told her to go away. At the second door, no one answered. I caught up with her at the third door as it was opened slowly after a peek out through closed blinds. A young woman in faded but clean clothes opened it after seeing Barb's smile. Barb asked by name for the wallet's owner. A look of trepidation passed over the girl's face as she backed up a step. She called out. A young man in his early twenties with a puzzled look came towards us. Barb recognized the young man from the driver's license picture. She held out the wallet without a word, just a smile, and he took it, not quite understanding what was happening. The young girl said thank you and quickly closed the door. Halfway back to the car I was still scolding my friend for taking such chances. Then we heard yelling over the street noise. The young man was running toward us and waving. He was smiling, yet tears were running down his face. Before we knew it, he was hugging us both and saying thank you over and over. When he calmed a bit, he explained. He'd just been back to work for three weeks and his first paycheck was in his wallet. That paycheck was enough to move his wife and their 3-month-old baby to a small clean apartment, close to his job and out of the threatening area where they now lived. With a last big hug, and the last tears from all of us, the young man headed back to the house. We headed back to our car with smiles that lasted longer than most, and kept returning to our faces. My friend taught me that day that your fears are worth overcoming, for the benefit of others. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .-~~~-, ( ) ( ) -^x^- ( ) /~ ~\ ( ) | | ( ) | | ( ) | __ _, (~~~~-( ) /\/\ (. ).) `_'_', ( ) C __) (.( .)-( ) | /~~~ \ (_ ( ) / \ ~====' /_____/` D) /`-_ `---' \ | .__|~-/^\-~|_/_ |^^^^^^^|| | __. ||/.\ | |OooooO \ ---. \ | | \ _ _- ,`_'_' .~\ \|__ __|-____ / ) < -(. ).) > \ ( .\ (. ) \(_/ ) ~- _) \_- ooo @ (_) @ \(_//. / /_C (-.____) /((O)/ \ ._/\~_. / |_\ / / /\\\\`-----'' _|>o< |__ | \ooooO ( \ \\ \\___/ \ `_'_', / \ \__-| \ `)\\-^\\ ^--. /_(.(.)- _\ \ \ ) |-`--.`--=\-\ /-//_ ' ( c D\ \_\_) |-___/ / \ V /.~ \/\\\ (@)___/ ~| / | / | |. /`\\_/\/ / / / | ( C`-'` / | \/ (/ / /_________- \ `C__-~ | / (/ / | | | \__________| \ (/ -Artist Unknown _____ . . .___ __ . . . .__ __ __ . . __ | | | | (__` | |\ /| | \ (__` / \ |\ | (__` | |---| |--- \ | | \/ | |__/ \ | | | \ | \ | | | |___ \__/ | | | | \__/ \__/ | \| \__/ >FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY On a cold night when Christal went to lock the door, she felt a draft coming in through the crack between the door and the door jamb. When they got into the room, she went straight to the bathroom because she had to go very badly. Then she walked right back out, almost in tears. "We got a boy's bathroom," she said. Linda couldn't figure out what she meant so she asked her daughter to show her. The little girl showed her the toilet with the paper tape across the seat, indicating it had been cleaned. When the lid was raised the seat came up, too. "See," Linda's daughter said. "Boy's bathroom!" _____________________________________________________________ | |_ _| || | __| / __|| || \/ | _ \/ __|/ _ \| \| |/ __| | | | | | _ | _| \__ \| || |.,| | _/\__ \ (_) | .` |\__ \ | | |_| |_||_|___| |___/|_||_| |_|_| |___/\___/|_|\_||___/ | | _ __ _ __ ___ __ _ __ __ ___ | | /_\ | _) /_\ |__) | | \ /_\\ /'(__ |\ ||/ _ |__| | | | /___\__|__)/___\|__\_|___|__//___\|__ __)__|_\||\__||__|_|_ | || _.-'-``-._ | \:::::::::' / || || ,'::::::'' `. | /::::::' \ || || ::::::' : | \::::: / || || |:::' | | /;'`--'`--'`--'`.\ || || ;::: . , : | \_.`--'. ,'- '._/ || || :-------::-------: | /: o :: o :\ || || `.__o__.;:.__o__.' | \:.____.;:.____.'/ || ||_____(.:::::(:_)_____.)______|______(.:::::(:_)_____.)_____|| || _ _ | || || ,':`._.':`. | \`.`.'`.'`.'`'( || || ..-':::::::' `--.. | :::::::::'' : || || \::::::::: / | |:::::' | || || _`.:::::: `._ | |:::: | || || .':::_.`--'. ,'--'._ `, | (.----. ,----.) || || `.::: o :: o : ,' | : o :: o : || || ,':`.____.;:.____.' `. | `.____.;:.____.' || ||__`.:(.:::::(:_)_____.)_,'___|_______(.::::(:_)____.)___SSt|| Shelby, 7, missed a spelling word on her spelling test. Teach us to judge not with hasty tongue, Neither the adult ... nor the young. Give us patience and grace to endure And a stronger faith so we feel secure. Instead of remembering, help us forget The irritations that caused us to fret. Freely forgiving for some offense And finding each day a rich recompense. In offering a friendly, helping hand And trying in all ways to understand; That all of us whoever we are ... Are trying to reach an unreachable star. For the great and small ... the good and bad, The young and old ... the sad and glad Are asking today; Is life worth living? The answer is only in, loving and giving. For only Love can make man kind And Kindness of Heart brings Peace of Mind. By giving love, we can start this year To lift the clouds of hate and fear. --- ...Beautiful!
