>Wearing Jesus
Are you letting this Garment set your style?
by Max Lucado (04/20/2021)
Over our 25 years, HEARTLIGHT.org has passed along the creative
blessings of many famous authors who graciously shared their writing
with our readers. This year as we celebrate "Shining the Light" for a
quarter-century, we will highlight some of these special authors.
Today, please enjoy one of Max Lucado's short but spot-on messages.
Paul said, "All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed
yourselves with Christ" (Galatians 3:27).
We wear Jesus! And those who don't believe in Jesus note what we do.
They make decisions about Christ by watching us. When we are kind,
they assume Christ is kind. When we're gracious, they assume Christ
is gracious.
But if we are brash, what will people think of our King? Our Master?
No wonder Paul also says:
Be wise in the way you act with people who are not believers,
making the most of every opportunity. When you talk, you should
always be kind and pleasant so you will be able to answer everyone
in the way you should (Colossians 4:5-6).
And even Peter, the once impetuous apostle, reminded us to be mindful
of how we share our hope because of our influence on others:
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to
give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the
hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16
keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously
against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander
(1 Peter 3:15-16).
Common courtesy honors God and his children. "Do your best," the
Scriptures say, "to live in peace with everyone" (Romans 12:18 NCV).
Just do your best!
You can't control the attitude of others, but you can manage yours!

>Watch out for Phonies
"Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on
the plain of Ono. But they were scheming to harm me."1
When Nehemiah and the ancient Israelites had almost
completed rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem several
centuries BC, enemies were not happy with their
progress and sought to discourage Nehemiah and get rid
of him. They tried to lure him away from his work by
inviting him to meet with them in the Plain of Ono.
But Nehemiah's reply was, "Oh no!" He knew their
stories were fabricated and that they were lying. Just
as well he did, otherwise he would have been destroyed
and God's work frustrated. Nehemiah stuck to the job
until the work was finished and the walls rebuilt.
Whenever we get involved in a fruitful work for God,
opposition is usually par for the course. The enemy
attacks at every opportunity and usually at our most
vulnerable points. He is a master of deceit and will
seek to discourage us, sidetrack us from the main task
to waste our time on less important matters, tempt us
to stray from the beaten path, and so on. Whatever
devices he uses we, like Nehemiah, need to be aware of
these, for more often than not he comes as an angel of
light.
When in doubt, we need to pray for God to reveal to us
the truth of the situation in which we find ourselves.
Realize, too, that the more authentic and real we are,
the easier we will "smell" (discern) those who are not
for real and are seeking to distract us so that they
can lure us away from what God wants us to do.
Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please give me the same
kind of insight, wisdom and courage that Nehemiah had
and stick to the work you have for me to do until it is
finished. Help me to say 'no' to any temptation or
distraction that would take me away from following and
serving you. Thank you for hearing and answering my
prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus Christ's name, amen."

>From What We Are to What We Can Become
"The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother
Simon and tell him, 'We have found the Messiah' (that
is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus
looked at him and said, 'You are Simon son of John. You
will be called Cephas' (that, being translated, is
Peter, the rock)."1
I once visited the beautiful Huntington Library Gardens
and was greatly impressed with the wonderful gardens
with sections dedicated to different countries. When we
were in the Japanese section and saw the display of
bonsai trees, we thought of how sad it was to see such
wonderful trees root-bound in that they could never in
their current setting ever reach the potential that
they were designed to become.
I get the same kind of feeling at a zoo or animal
sanctuary when I see a glorious eagle cage-bound. This
"king of birds" with the incredible wingspan can rise
no higher than the cage he is in.
I wonder when God looks down and sees so many of his
children sin-bound or damaged-emotions-bound, does this
make him feel sad? I'm sure it does, but the good news
is that God also sees our great potential.
When Jesus first met Simon he saw Peter, the rock. When
he looked at Abram, he saw Abraham, the father of the
nation of Israel. When he saw David, the shepherd boy,
he saw a mighty King David. When he looked at Saul of
Tarsus, he saw Paul the Apostle.
And when Jesus looks at you and me, he sees us not only
as we are, but also what, with his help, we can become.
When Jesus looks at you, what do you thinks he sees?
Whatever you do, don't miss out on becoming what God
has envisioned for you to become. He does have a vision
and purpose for your life too. Never rest until you
discover what that purpose is.
Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please give me the insight
to see what you see in me and what, with your help, I
can become. And give me the courage to do what I need
to do to fulfill your vision for me, so that my life
will be an investment in eternity. Thank you for
hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus
Christ's name, amen."

>HAPPY SPRING
By: Joseph J. Mazzella
Spring has definitely sprung here in the mountains of my home.
As I walked in my yard this morning I heard a hundred different
birds greeting the sunrise with a chorus of delight. Later as I sat
on my porch swing I saw my first butterfly of the year circling down
in the wind until it touched my hand and passed on its loving
greeting. Then as I walked with my sons around the local lake this
evening we saw dozens of yellow and purple flowers sticking their
heads through the ground to soak up the warm sunshine. These were
complimented by the red, green, pink, and white of the trees eagerly
bursting in growth. A cool and gentle breeze kissed our faces,
filled the air with sweet smells, and brought music to our ears as
we heard hundreds of frogs singing together in a joyful jubilee.
Spring is such a glorious time. It is a time of rebirth, new
beginnings, and fresh starts. It is a time of growth, a time of
beauty, and most of all a time of life. Being out there among it
helped to stir the life and joy within me as well. It awakened my
spirit, warmed my heart, enlightened my mind, energized my body, and
uplifted my soul. It made me aware of just how precious each day is
and just how priceless each moment of our lives can be. It showed me
again that life is for living and for loving not just for existing.
I hope that the spring of this year adds a spring to your own
step as well. I hope that the new life bursting forth in nature
awakens you to the endless life in your own soul. I hope that all
the new growth and new beginnings around you help you to choose new
growth in love and new beginnings in joy in your own life. I hope
that all this wondrous glory of creation reminds you of the loving
hand of God that created it. Have a happy Spring.

>FEATHERED FIDELITY
by Michael Smith
It's a sad reality.
All relationships start with love and promise, but all too
often we see them weaken, crumble and finally fail.
It's too bad all relationships don't go to the birds.
I know that sounds strange, but read on.
Many years ago, when I was just a young boy, a small yellow
bird hit our front door. When I looked outside, I saw its tiny,
unmoving body on our deck. I opened the door to see if it was just
stunned, or worse, dead.
I was kneeling over it when my mom joined me.
"Michael, I think it may be dead. I heard the bang on the
glass. It hit pretty hard."
"Mom, should we bury it?"
"I'm not sure, Michael. When I first looked out I saw another
bird land beside it. It looked like it was trying to pick this one
up. I think we should let nature take care of this. Let's put it
on the roof of the car and see what happens."
We placed the unmoving, little bird on the roof of my dad's
car and went back into the house.
From our living room window we watched as the bird's mate flew
to its side, carefully grip the back of the dead bird's neck in it's
tiny beak, and with a strength only love and devotion could provide,
lifted its mate in the air.
It carried the body from the car, across the street, over the
meadow on the other side and into nearby trees. It flew only a few
feet off the ground. Sometimes it would get up to six feet high and
then the weight of its companion would pull it lower again. Its
struggle was great, but the desire not to be parted from its mate
was greater.
Thirty-five years later, I stepped out of my home on a warm
summer morning. I looked toward my next door neighbor's -- we lived
in attached townhouses -- and noticed a single strand of a spider's
web strung from the bush by the corner of their townhouse to the
wheel of one of their cars. I thought it was strange for a spider
to spin such a web, especially just one tiny strand.
I moved closer to investigate. When I reached down to break
the web I discovered it wasn't a web at all. It was a piece of
fishing line. I gave it a tug and saw it was tangled in the bushes,
and the other end was knotted under the car.
One of the boys was sitting on the front deck of the house.
I remarked, "Looks like someone booby-trapped your friend's
car."
He came closer to see what I was talking about. I gave the
line a tug. It was tightly jammed under the wheel of the vehicle.
"Strange, it seems to go all the way under," I said.
I walked to the back of the car and saw a robin. It fluttered
to get away, but the line, which was wrapped around its tiny leg,
held it firm. The poor bird flapped around on the pavement with
only a foot of line for it to move.
Slowly I approached and reached to grab it. When my fingers
first touched his feathers it squawked and flapped away from me. I
moved faster on the second attempt and managed to get a grip around
his trembling body. It squirmed and twisted its head to snap at me,
but I held tight.
The boy came closer for a look, and then went for a knife.
When he returned I realized he would probably break the poor bird's
leg when the knife pulled the string tight before cutting it through,
so I sent him for scissors. He came back and we carefully removed
the string.
The bird was free, but I held him a little longer, so I could
remove one last strand of the line from his tiny leg. It made a
great effort and escaped from my grasp. He flew low across the
pavement, under a row of mailboxes, and up into a tree. It was free
again.
Then I noticed a second robin fly down from a nearby tree and
land next to the newly-freed robin. It had stayed close by, as its
mate struggled for freedom, and would not have left until freedom or
death ended their relationship.
The birds I witnessed mated for life and the struggles that
come with it. Now don't you wish a lot more relationships would go
to the birds?
I know I do.

>A Life-time Experience In One Day
I have been in the computer business for close to 40 years. During
1995, I was employed as the Systems Administrator, Network
Administrator, Operations Manager for the Oklahoma Blood Institute
in Oklahoma City. As a side note, I also worked for about a dozen
companies in the region as a mainframe consultant to improve
security, disaster backup/restores, and improve mainframe
performance. Also, I was trained as a Stephen Minister, a lay
counselor, and was assigned to start working as a facilitator for
a bereavement group that Wednesday evening. So my plate was pretty
full at that time.
My wife had passed on from cancer and I was filling my schedule to
keep me busy. It was early morning, a customer was on the phone
with me about a mainframe problem he was having, at the same time I
was looking at our three mainframes through the glass separating the
computer room and my desk when I heard a loud BOOM, both on the
phone and in the building.
The force of the explosion was so massive that the mainframe
actually lifted off the floor and landed back, still running. Dust
and debris fell from the ceiling. I rushed outside to see what was
going on. My first guess was a railroad car full of gasoline
exploded, however when I went outside I saw smoke billowing out
from downtown Oklahoma City.
Immediately I thought of the downtown airport, used for small
craft and thought a plane had crashed. I knew we would need blood
and we only had two computer stations to process donors. I pulled
together some of the staff and within 30 minutes had set up an
additional three stations to receive donors.
The news had stated a bomb had exploded in the Murrah building
downtown. I was stunned! A bomb in Oklahoma City. Why? Who?
Within one hour a line of donors filled the lobby and stretched
outside for blocks. People were wanting to do something, anything.
When I looked at the line of people, I couldn't hold back my tears.
Yes, America is vulnerable, and yes, America is willing and able to
do whatever is necessary.
I checked on my family. One of my sons was washing windows
downtown when a shower of glass hit him. He was one of the
wounded, treated for glass cuts and released. My daughter-in-
law's sister was supposed to work in the day care center in the
building that day but had a doctor's appointment. She suffered
the guilt of not dying with her co-workers.
A man that I bowled with, his wife worked in the Social Security
office in the building and she died. The actual body count should
be one higher because she was pregnant with their first child,
appropriately named Angel.
Then came the meeting for the bereaved. I told the group that if
fear was the objective, they failed because we are here. If the
attackers wanted to divide us, they failed because we are united.
I saw families cry and hysteria at the church where the families
of the victims were treated by a community of counselors/ministers
and such.
I cannot imagine the level of New York's disaster. However I do
not doubt the will of the American people.
By B.J. Cassady Guthrie, Oklahoma.

>From BJ Today Random Thoughts
April 19th has come and gone yet the feelings of pain and hope
remain. Most people close to the OKC tragedy feel like Timothy
McVeigh did not act alone that day. There are a lot of shadowy
people who claim things but can prove nothing. What is important
is a lot of people, children lost their lives. My son was injured
by flying glass. Another son's sister-in-law escaped death because
she had a doctor's appointment and did not work in the day care
center in the bombed building. I did double duty, working to keep
the computers running and setting up extra stations to receive
blood and after hours working as a counselor for the victims. The
screams... the screams will never leave my head.
However, the bottom line is I saw so much hope, so much pulling
together that it reaffirmed my faith in mankind. Democrats,
Republicans and people of all religions pulled together to force
their will of hope on our beleaguered city.

Oklahoma City bombing - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_City_bombing
The Oklahoma City bombing was a domestic terrorist truck bombing of
the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma,
United States, on Wednesday, April 19, 1995. Perpetrated by anti-
overnment extremists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, the bombing
happened at 9:02 am and killed at least 168 people, injured more
than 680 others, and destroyed more than one-third of the building,
which had to be demolished. The blast destroyed or damaged 324 other
buildings within a 16-block radius, shattered glass in 258 nearby
buildings, and destroyed or burned 86 cars.

>RISK IT
"To laugh is to risk being a fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To express feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd
Is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To hope is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.
The person who risks nothing,
Does nothing,
Has nothing and is nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But they simply cannot learn,
Feel, change, grow, love or live.
Risks must be taken because,
The greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
Only a person who risks is free."

>No Night There
by Michael E. Brooks
"The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to
shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it.
The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those
who are saved shall walk in its light, and the
kings of the earth bring their glory and honor
into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day
(there shall be no night there). And they shall
bring the glory and the honor of the nations into
it" (Revelation 21:23-26 NKJV).
Nepal is experiencing severe energy shortages.
There are extremely long lines at petrol stations,
with low limits of fuel allowed to each vehicle.
And there are several hours of electricity
blackouts daily. One can expect 3 or 4 hours
without current in the morning to early afternoon,
and the same again from late afternoon to evening.
It only takes a night or two of these blackouts
for a visitor to realize how accustomed to and
dependent upon constant light most of us have
become.
The developed world at least has mostly forgotten
about night. We live in constant light, either the
natural light of the day, or artificial light
during the night. We go where and when we choose,
do whatever we want 24 hours per day. There are
night shifts at work, night classes at school, and
even lighted athletic fields and golf courses. We
have spot lights, head lamps, night vision devices
–- virtually any aid one can imagine to remove the
inconvenience of darkness.
But turn off the power and dark returns. On
average about half of the time any given spot on
earth is dark. That is reality. So are the facts
that darkness hampers activities, increases
dangers, and awakens dread. Humans avoid, escape,
and fear darkness.
All of that is only the physical world of
darkness. Add the spiritual and emotional aspects
of the subject and the negatives multiply greatly.
Emotionally, darkness may suggest depression,
pessimism, anger, hatred, and other negative
thoughts. Spiritually, darkness simply represents
sin and evil. It is right to fear and avoid
darkness.
Against these there is the promise of eternal
happiness in Heaven where there is no night and no
darkness. There will be no blackouts. The people
of Nepal can relate to that. There the redeemed
will always be in perfect light. But that is not
the end of the promise. There will also be no
hatred or fear, nor any sin. Not any, ever!
Darkness in all of its meanings will be abolished
forever, because there all will be in the eternal
presence of God the Father, and of his Son, Jesus.
Their glory will provide perfect illumination
forever.
John teaches, "...God is light and in him is no
darkness at all ... if we walk in the light as he
is in the light, we have fellowship with one
another and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son
cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:5,7). One does
not need to wait until death and the resurrection
to know the glory of God nor to be freed from the
power of darkness. Though this darkness will not
be eternally destroyed until the end of time, yet
we may live in the light of his presence even now.
We are only required to believe in Jesus and to
walk in his light, that is by his commands.
The darkness of sin, fear, and guilt cannot
prevail against those who trust in him and obey
his will. "There is therefore now no condemnation
to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk
according to the flesh, but according to the
Spirit" (Romans 8:1).

...Darkness as we know it Today...
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of
the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness
in high places. -- Ephesians 6:12
This is what we are up against - spiritual wickedness.
We see it more and more as the devil becomes more and
more emboldened.

A list of 25 interesting interesting things about World War Two
that you might not be aware of. I was aware of many of these from
reading extensively about World War Two throughout my life but
some of these I had never heard before. The list is by no means
inclusive to interesting things that happened during WW II as the
war was so vast and long the list could be endless.

A great look at the beautiful wildlife and scenery along some
rivers in Alaska that only increases my desire to spend a few
summer weeks visiting Alaska. Rafting the rivers like this way
is a great way to experience Alaska as you'll see plenty of
Grizzly bears and have the opportunity to do some amazing fishing.
If you decide to take a trip like this make sure you pick some
experienced guides to lead you down the river in safety.

>LETTER TO A FOOL
Dear Fool,
I saw you yesterday as you began your daily chores. You awoke
without kneeling to pray. As a matter of fact, you didn't even bless
your meals or pray before going to bed last night. You are so
unthankful. I like that about you!
I cannot tell you how glad I am that you have not changed your
way of living. Fool, you are mine. Remember, you and I have been
going steady for years, and I still don't love you yet. As a matter of
fact, I hate you, because I hate God. I am only using you to get
even with God.
He kicked me out of heaven and I'm going to use you as long as
possible to pay Him back. You see, Fool, GOD LOVES YOU and
HE has great plans in store for you. But you have yielded your life
to me and I'm going to make your life a living hell. That way we'll
be together twice. This will really hurt God, thanks to you. I'm
really showing Him who's boss in your life. With all of the good
times we've had... We have been watching dirty movies, cursing
people out, partying, stealing, lying, being hypocritical,
fornicating, overeating, telling dirty jokes, gossiping, back-
stabbing people, disrespecting old people and those in leadership
positions. NO respect for the church, bad attitudes, calling everyone
a racist, dividing people and inciting people to distrust and hate
each other... You are my kind of special person!
Surely, you don't want to give all of this up. Come on, Fool, let's
burn together forever. I've got some hot plans for us. This is just a
letter of appreciation from me to you. I'd like to say "THANKS"
for letting me use you for most of your foolish life.
You are so gullible, I laugh at you. When you are tempted to sin,
you give in. HA, HA, HA! You make me sick. Sin is beginning to
take its toll on your life. You look 20 yrs. older. I need new blood,
so go head and teach some children how to sin. All you have to do
is smoke, over indulge in alcoholic beverages, drugs, lie, cheat,
gamble, gossip, hate, fornicate, be prideful (remember that's why God
kicked me out of heaven). Do all of this in the presence of children
and they will do it, too. Kids are like that.
Well, Fool, I have to let you go for now. I'll be back in a couple of
seconds to tempt you again. If you were smart, you would run
somewhere, confess your sins, live for God with what little bit of
life that you have left. It's not my nature to warn anyone, but to be
your age and still sinning, it's becoming a bit ridiculous. Don't get
me wrong, I still hate you... it's just that you'd make a better fool
for Christ.
Your partner in crime,
SATAN
PS – And if you really love me, you won't share this letter with
anyone!

“Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you

>LEARNING TO RUN
The two-year old likes to run.
It warms my heart when I see his funny movements as he runs.
It also scares me because young children have a tendency to fall
very easily.
I was out shopping with my sons when the two-year old started to
run.
He fell.
If you are a parent, you completely understand the phrase,
"it hurts me more than it does you." There is something that
pains worse than physical torment to see your little one hurt.
He skinned his knee and elbow. He cried for a few minutes and
finally with the soothing of Daddy, quieted down.
We are like my two-year old.
There are so many areas of life where we must run:
some by choice, some by the force of circumstances.
There are so many new things.
There are so many times when our steps are unsure and we are not
experienced runners.
The older I get, the more I understand how a Divine Father can
let us go through some things and fall. I was tempted to stop
my son when I saw him run. I knew that sooner or later, if not
that day then one day, he would fall.
I also knew that if he was to ever learn how to run, he must
fall, and often I had to watch him do it.
I fell in business several times before I was able to run.
I fell in relationships several times before I had sense enough
to stop looking for perfection and know that we all have faults.
Even your second child is reared differently from the first
because you learn some things from falling with that first one.
I fell off of my bicycle.
I fell off of my motorcycle.
I fell on skates (roller and ice).
I even choked a few times while learning to swim.
We often fall when learning to run the things of life.
Too often bruises stop us from ever trying to run again.
We are afraid that we will slip and get hurt.
We are afraid of the pain.
My son runs much better now. I still wince when I see him run
on a hard surface but he won't stop running.
At only two, he has one of the keys of life.
He won't stop running just because he fell.
Your bruises will heal, you will get up,
and the path will still be there.
Though at times you may not think it so,
The Divine Father is still watching over you.
He just knows that he has to let you fall,
If you are ever to learn to run.

>THE OLD PATHS
I liked the old paths, when
Moms were at home.
Dads were at work.
Brothers went into the army.
And sisters got married BEFORE having children!
Crime did not pay;
Hard work did;
And people knew the difference.
Moms could cook;
Dads would work;
Children would behave.
Husbands were loving;
Wives were supportive;
And children were polite.
Women wore the jewelry;
And Men wore the pants.
Women looked like ladies;
Men looked like gentlemen;
And children looked decent.
People loved the truth,
And hated a lie;
They came to church to get IN,
Not to get OUT!
Hymns sounded Godly;
Sermons sounded helpful;
Rejoicing sounded normal;
And crying sounded sincere.
Cursing was wicked;
Drugs were for illness;
And divorce was unthinkable.
The flag was honored;
America was beautiful;
And God was welcome!
We read the Bible in public;
Prayed in school;
And preached from house to house
To be called an American was worth dying for;
To be called a Christian was worth living for;
To be called a traitor was a shame!
Preachers preached because they had a message;
And Christians rejoiced because they had the VICTORY!
Preachers preached from the Bible;
Singers sang from the heart;
And sinners turned to the Lord to be SAVED!
A new birth meant a new life;
Salvation meant a changed life;
Following Christ led to eternal life.
Being a preacher meant you proclaimed the word of God;
Being a deacon meant you would serve the Lord;
Being a Christian meant you would live for Jesus;
And being a sinner meant someone was praying for you!
Laws were based on the Bible;
Homes read the Bible;
And churches taught the Bible.
God was worshiped;
Christ was exalted;
And the Holy Spirit was respected..
Church was where you found Christians
On the Lord's day, rather than in the garden,
On the creek bank, on the golf course,
Or being entertained somewhere else.
I still like the old paths the best!
Thanks for sharing Mags

>5 TIPS TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF LOSING
Dan Miller
Losing a job can lead to anger, resentment, guilt and depression.
I once worked with a gentleman who having lost his job, tried to
reposition himself and do a job search, only to become discouraged
after just a few days with no success.
Then he started hiding out from his wife, pretending to be doing a
job search, while in reality he was going to the library to surf the
Internet and read magazines. He consoled himself in fast food and
high sugar snacks and quickly added about 25 pounds. This, in
turn, made him self-conscious about his weight and ill-fitting
clothes. "I hated my job, but am still angry about being let go,"
he said.
This story is not unusual. New research confirms that losing a job
can put people at an elevated risk for emotional and physical
problems. Unemployment can start a vicious cycle of depression,
loss of personal discipline and decreased emotional health.
"Depression can contribute to much longer searches," notes John
Challenger, CEO of outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Failure in a business, the dissolution of a relationship, a breakdown
of health, or a financial disaster can also be a set-up for these
negative, self-defeating feelings. Any of these situations can make
a person a candidate for the downward spiral of anger, resentment,
guilt and depression.
To break the cycle, take charge of the areas where you can
experience immediate success.
Five Tips to Break the Cycle of Losing:
1. Start with doing what you can to stay sharp physically. If that's
walking two miles a day, then start with that. Notice the birds,
children, trees and sky as you're walking.
2. Spend at least two hours every day reading or listening to
positive, uplifting materials. Limit TV watching - much of what
you see and hear there will add to your pessimism and
discouragement.
3. Invite a friend and treat yourself to a great concert - in every
city I visit there are amazing concerts at the local universities
and churches every week.
4. Take a class - there are multiple agencies and churches offering
free career transition classes and workshops in nearly any city.
5. Volunteer to help someone else. A man asked Dr. Carl
Menninger, "What would you advise a person to do if he felt a
nervous breakdown coming on?" Most people expected him to
reply, "Consult a psychiatrist." To their astonishment he replied,
"Lock up your house, go across the railroad tracks, find someone
in need and do something to help that person." Helping at one of
the prisons, your local mission or the Salvation Army will do wonders
for helping you see your own brighter future.
Making deposits of success in life areas aside from the career and
financial pieces are the best way to prepare yourself for success in
those areas ultimately. If you are depleted in personal areas you
will come across as weak and needy when presenting yourself for
a job opportunity.
None of these are directly related to getting a new job, starting
another business, rebuilding your health, or finding another friend
and yet they are very much related. From these actions come the
boldness, confidence and enthusiasm necessary to nurture the
success you are seeking in the work area.
"They say when one door of happiness closes, another opens. But
the problem is... we look so long at the closed door that we never
notice the open one."

>Trying to Please Everyone
(By Alan Smith)
The story is told of a man and his grandson traveling down the
road, walking and leading a donkey. They met a man who said,
"How foolish for you to be walking. One of you should be riding
the donkey." So the man put his grandson on the animal.
The next traveler they met frowned and said, "How dreadful for a
strong boy to be riding while an old man walks." So the boy climbed
off the donkey and his grandfather climbed on.
The next person they met said, "I just can't believe a grown man
would ride and make a little boy walk." So the man pulled the boy
up and they rode the donkey together. That is, until they met
another man who said, "I never saw anything so cruel in all my
life -- two human beings riding on one poor defenseless donkey!"
Down the road a ways, they met a couple of men. After they passed,
one of the men turned to the other and said, "Did you ever before
see two fools carrying a donkey?"
The point is: You can't please everyone! And it can be very
frustrating to even try to do so because it's impossible. The truth
of the matter is, even if we could please everyone, we shouldn't.
In fact, trying to please others can [easily] distract from the
One we should be pleasing, if we're not careful.
Though Paul was certainly mindful of the feelings of others, he
wrote: "Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or
am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men,
I would not be a servant of Christ." (Galatians 1:10, NIV)
Living our lives so as to receive the praise of people around us
will only get us into trouble. I think of the chief rulers who
"believed in Him [Jesus], but because of the Pharisees they did
not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for
they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."
(John 12:42-43). When we become attached to public opinion and
pleasing others around us, we will eventually end up denying God.
Have you found lately that everyone isn't pleased with your
decisions? Don't lose any sleep over it, as long as you're seeking
to please the only ONE that really matters!

>T-R-A-V-E-L
(Author Unknown)
Inmate Mitchell King had a visitor -- his wife. King was serving a
six-year jail term in Auckland, New Zealand for armed robbery. But
his wife didn't want to be away from him for that long. So they
held hands. And they stuck. She'd rubbed her palms with Super Glue.
Their new-found closeness was short-lived. And their separation
painful. Her technique is not one I'd recommend for a closer
relationship.
But if you want more closeness; if you desire relationships that
are deeper and broader, more meaningful and longer-lasting, then
remember the word "travel."
T is for TRUST
Trust is the glue that holds people together (not Super Glue). A
relationship will go nowhere without it.
R is for RESPECT
"Do not save your loving speeches for your friends till they are
dead; do not write them on their tombstones, speak them rather now
instead," writes Anna Cummins. It's about respecting others and
letting them know that you value them.
A is for AFFECTION
Love - genuine love and care is a key.
V is for VULNERABILITY
Though we may feel afraid to let another too close, no relationship
will go anywhere without risking vulnerability. Entrepreneur Jim
Rohn says, "The walls we build around us to keep out the sadness
also keep out the joy." And the love.
E is for EMOTIONAL INTIMACY
Learn to be open. Learn to communicate freely. What kinds of
relationships you make are largely determined by how openly you
have learned to communicate.
L is for LAUGHTER
Victor Borge got it right when he said, "Laughter is the shortest
distance between two people." It's also the most enjoyable.
For relationships that can really go somewhere, just remember the
word "travel." Make sure the relationship is one that God wants for
you. Then enjoy the trip!

>-->SOME GREAT PEACE
Weathered souls
of time gone by
seek for peace
through Adonai.
Seasoned hearts
of there and to
might be found
torn through and through.
Yet those hearts
of seasoned places
can be found
with smiling faces
For through Jesus

some great peace

And those weathered

>Cowboy Prayer
I'm not too good at prayin', Lord
and You may not know me very well.
For I haven't been inside a church,
in quite a long, long spell.
But You may still have seen me, Lord,
here on this dusty trail,
herdin' after cattle
through the snow and rain and hail.
And as I ride I do give thanks
for the miracles I see
the clear blue sky, the buttercups,
the buzzing little bee.
I give thanks for the soft green grass
that feeds the cattle that we tend;
it also gives my bed some comfort
when the day is at an end.
With each hill and valley,
along each dusty mile,
