All the coffee in Colombia couldn't make me a morning person, but during our fifty-three year marriage, Pops and I orchestrated mornings to the tune of good coffee. Real coffee -- home ground that became hazel dark, changing to a pretty golden bronze tempered with cream. Real cream -- thick, almost yellow, perfectly sweet, neither lumpy or frothy atop our java. Making coffee is the only thing macho men do that doesn't threaten their masculinity. For we women, it's on the same domestic level as changing toilet paper. It's amazing how the world begins to change through ones eyes when swigging down a cup of caffeine. It must be true that on the eighth day, God created coffee that smells like freshly ground heaven. Hot and wet, it falls into the stomach, ideas are born, things recalled are noted, wit awakens, nouns and adjectives come to life, and suddenly you have a full gallop urge to visit the throne. In our office, with a potpourri of folks occupying the leather couch over second and third cups, there flowed matters of insurance claims, politics, and local gossip. Coffee was the social binder -- black as the devil, hot as hell, but pure as an angel foiling our sleep until we did it all over again the next day. Upon miles and miles of Montana highways, Pops and I indulged ourselves with all the famous, and not so famous, jumbo-sized cups. Although drive-in Styrofoam was against Pop's religion, our cups of the northwest's best right down to perfect demitasse-like cups after a big dinner, made us good Lutherans. At one 1910 vintage express stop in the boonies, Pops asked if they had coffee brewing. I felt obliged to kick him in the shins for there was a pot of scorchy smelling black stuff sitting on the wood stove alright. The spoon all but stood alone in the stained and cracked cup. We sat at the counter on tractor seats while Pops managed a couple sips and I took cover in a can of lukewarm soda. After another bitter swallow he decided to fill the car and purchased two rock-hard Snickers. Both of us felt better served in tending to other needs behind a big half-dead scrub down the road. In keeping with Pop's Scandanavian side, we never hit the back woods or blue ribbon fishing spots without his famous camp pot. There was nothing notable about it -- this well broke in, speckled blue, scorched and dented, enameled eighteen-cupper. I could forget everything from the dutch oven to scouring pads, but God help me if I should forget Pop's precious coffee boiler. I may as well have taken a hike -- a long one. No innards, just the pot, for boiled camp coffee was the only way to brew in God's wilderness until it was near lethal. Nobody in our clan could come close to the smell and taste of perfectly measured, hand-cranked, fresh ground joe simmering over a campfire. Also, nothing haunted the nostrils of our kids back from the day's first catch as did the aroma of their dad's coffee. And so, at ten and twelve, they sat by the fire sipping pure pleasure, though we watched their intake carefully to make sure our brood wasn't sleeping with their eyes open. Then someone lowered the boom on our Pops, for he was diagnosed with everything from heart problems, to prostate cancer. No more swigging down the black stuff. His serious coffee drinking days ended abruptly, except for one or two civilized cups of decaffeinated perk in the morning. I'll never forget the look on his face as he surveyed that first tin. He brought it up for a good sniff, then proclaimed it was the devil's blend. And after tasting it, he grumbled... "Okay, I'll quit, but it won't be easy drinking my Bailey's straight." -- Kathe Campbell __________________________________________________ Kathe lives her dream on a Montana mountain with her mammoth donkeys, a Keeshond, and a few kitties. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 AM or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60 &70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love. I will. I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Isaiah 26:3 During a trip to Israel, my wife and I got to practice many times saying the one Hebrew word we knew: Shalom! Even today Jewish people use it to say hello and goodbye. It's a beautiful word, because it conveys much more than a simple greeting. The word shalom in the Old Testament is often translated peace, as in the blessing that Aaron was commanded to speak over the people of Israel. This peace involves much more than our modern idea of simply the absence of fighting. This peace presents a positive picture: a life filled with total well-being. Shalom means everything is working the right way, God's way, resulting in rest for one's soul, confidence in one's mind, joy in one's heart, harmony in one's relationships, and prosperity for one's walk in life. When you say Shalom to someone, you are saying: May you have this kind of peace. Doesn't that sound more substantial than Hi and See you later? This kind of peace does not arise from our war-torn, conflict-ridden world. Isaiah reminds us that real peace comes from a deep, enduring knowledge of God and a complete trust in him. It is only in a love relationship with God that we can live with the blessing of having his face shine on us. from Today-David Zandstra --- ...aww nice, thank you Johanna! , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Today, we Christians have this peace... He was waiting for Dad and Grandpa to stop talking so he could go for a ride. His mother poked her head in the truck and said, "Where are you going, Max?" "Not know," he replied, raising his little arms. "What are you going to do?" she asked. "Not know," came the answer again. "Well," she asked,"do you want to come back in the house with me?" "No!" came the quick reply as he settled himself more firmly, waiting to begin his adventure. "That little boy taught me a lesson I needed right then," his mother Sheryl told me later. She was soon to give birth to another baby, and she had reason to be unsure of what was ahead. "He didn't know where he was going or what he was going to do, but he trusted Grandpa completely. Max's confidence in Grandpa is the kind of trust I need in my heavenly Father." It's that great Italian dish that has buttered noodles served in a rich, creamy cheese sauce. Unfortunately, one news magazine in an article on nutrition and our health called it a "heart attack on a plate." That may be a bit of an overstatement, but the fact is that a lot of foods do contribute to the slow shutdown of the valves that happen to carry the blood and oxygen into your heart. I love what one commercial calls it -- blood sludge. Medical people refer to the hardening of the arteries -- the process in which foods that are high in cholesterol and fat start building up hard deposits in your arteries. If this hardening in your heart is allowed to continue long enough, it is not a laughing matter. It really can threaten your life. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The Crisis of a Closing Heart." Hearts can harden physically and spiritually. It can become really dangerous in the heart of any man or woman who is trying to make a difference for Jesus Christ. It was Jesus' heart that motivated all He did -- a heart that the Bible says was "moved with compassion when He saw the multitudes." He was deeply moved. He saw them the Bible says, as "threatened and helpless sheep without a shepherd." He wept over His city Jerusalem because they wouldn't come to Him and the life He wanted to give them. Paul was a model for all of us who want to serve Christ when he revealed what drove him to suffer incredible pain and sacrifice to tell people about Jesus. Our word for today from the Word of God is 2 Corinthians 5:14, "Christ's love compels us." Not long ago I was told about a Rev. Gomez who is a pastor in one of America's major cities. Often, he wouldn't come into the service until a few minutes before his message. But this one particular Sunday, it came time for the sermon and Rev. Gomez was not on the platform. A couple of church leaders went to check his office, and there he was looking out over the endless rows of apartments and houses that jammed their depressed neighborhood. And he was weeping. One of the men who had come looking for him said gently, "Pastor, I understand, you're weeping because of the great needs all around us, aren't you?" "No," the pastor told him, "I'm weeping because it doesn't move me like it used to." That is cause for weeping. This servant of God realized that something had happened to his heart. Like a person with hardening of the arteries, his heart had started to close up -- to harden. Maybe yours is, too. Like that physical hardening, it happens slowly and imperceptibly, but the longer it goes unchecked, the more dangerous it becomes. Most of us start serving the Lord with a healthy heart. We're moved by the lostness of people who don't have a Savior. We realize the life-or-death importance of getting to them with the message of Jesus. Heaven and hell are at stake. And we come into the Lord's work with a heart that's soft toward the pain and suffering and dysfunction that sin is causing in lives all around us. We ask the Lord to use us to make a difference, whatever it takes. But for some of us, that healthy heart started to harden somewhere along the way. With all the pressures, the politics, the disillusionments, the programs, the conflicts, we can no longer say that it is this burning love of Christ for the lost and hurting that drives us. What once was passion has become profession. What once was a deep affair of the heart has become an exercise of our head and our busy hands. And the joy, the fire is going out -- or gone. But the One who gave you that original piece of His heart wants to give it to you again if you'll recognize the crisis of your closing heart and tell your Master that you want His life-changing heart surgery -- to open up what the deposits of the years have closed, and to give you a new heart, throbbing with His love and His passion and His tears for the lost. Without that, there ultimately is no life. Go to the Master Heart Surgeon today and tell Him you want a heart like His. [Copyright (c) 2005, Ron Hutchcraft. Every night from 6 p.m. until 4 a.m. we took turns sitting up with our daughter as she cried and wailed. Though neither of us got any real sleep, I at least was able to escape to work. My wife stayed home. Just as it looked like things were improving slightly I was faced with a four-day business trip. My understanding boss tried to get me excused, but her boss made it clear I must go or face being fired. Two days into the trip things went VERY wrong at home. My wife, Deb, took Amelia in for a pediatric visit. Our doctor had no children and little experience with colic. During the exam, my still exhausted wife was trying to explain our ordeal and commented, "I'm starting to understand why some parents snap." The doctor excused herself. Deb picked our baby up from the exam table, and Amelia let loose with a big bowel movement. Left alone, Deb tried to clean the baby, herself, and the room as best she could. A few minutes later the Doctor returned. Standing in the doorway, she informed my wife that she had called Child Protective Services (CPS) and they were sending someone over to take her to their offices to interview. My wife was floored but the doctor wouldn't discuss the issue. When she asked if she could go to the bathroom to finish cleaning up, the doctor said, "The police will be called if you leave this exam room." That was too much for Deb. She bundled up Amelia and pushed past the Doctor. She said, "I know where the CPS office is. I'm not waiting two hours for transport, I'm going there myself," and left. As she walked into the CPS office she must have looked a complete fright: upset, crying, covered in baby poop with a wailing baby in her arms. She was hurried into an interview room and a nurse sat down with her. Deb recounted her story. At the end, the Nurse asked, "So you've got a colicky baby, your husband's out of town, and your doctor doesn't understand?" "Yes," my wife answered. "You're normal, sweetie," was the nurse's reply. The understanding Nurse had also faced similar challenges with one of her kids. She told my wife how hard it had been for her, and how horrible it had felt at the time. My wife felt a great weight lift. Here was someone who validated her feelings and understood her. A year later, my best friend had her first child and went through the same struggles with colic. We sat down and told these new parents our story: that we'd felt the same feelings of anger, pain and fear, and that we understood their problems. Hearing they were normal helped them to persevere, too. As the boys watched, they asked where the fish was going. In a motherly way, Marcy said the fish was going to heaven. One of the boys yelled frantically, "When I die is that how I'm getting to heaven?" -- Marcy of Columbus, Ohio Here is another one from Marcy. She and her husband are foster parents and kids come to them at any time of the day or night. One night after the kids had gone to bed a baby came to their home. They put him in the crib, without the kids knowing. Early the next morning, Marcy heard yelling... "Mommy, Mommy come quick! There is a baby growing in our crib!" _()_ )( _..-''''''-.._ .' . "I'll only be outside a short while," said Dianne. "And I can trust you, can't I?" "Well," said Sam, pausing to think. "I guess I don't have anything bad planned right now anyway." -- Dianne Witwer of Bluffton, Indiana Loretta's two grandsons came to visit. Earlier in the day their mother had mentioned that the 15-year-old wanted to help Grandpa so that he could make some spending money. After they arrived, Loretta told her husband to take Aaron downstairs to work and she would take Adysen, 9, and let him play on the computer. Hearing this plan, Adysen spoke up, "Uh, uh... I need to make a living, too!" -- Loretta Hawkins of Hiddenite, North Carolina * ) `( * () * ) <^^> ( . .-""-. ) .---. ."-....-"-._ _...---''`/. He was 5 and very curious and often got into trouble. His mom was always telling him, "Watch what you are doing!" because he never paid attention. One day while playing ball, Grandpa threw the ball and hit Adysen in the face (but not hard). Adysen bent over to pick up the ball after it dropped. He stopped half-way, looked up at Grandpa, and said, "Watch what you are doing!" Barb runs a small child care service in her home and she is blessed to be able to care for her grandsons every day. A few months ago she made the smoke alarm go off to practice their monthly fire drill. Peyton, 3, kept right on playing. So Barb rang the smoke alarm again and after getting his attention she said, "What does it mean when you hear this sound?" His immediate reply was, "Grandma's cooking chicken!" Joey, 5, was visiting shortly after the trees were planted and Grandpa was showing him the orchard. "Here is an apple tree... two cherry trees... three peach trees..." After viewing all the trees, Joey looked at Grandpa and said, "Grandpa, I think you got taken. I don't see any fruit on any of these trees!" -- Grandma Jo of New Boston, Missouri Mary was driving Betsy, 4, home on a warm spring evening. It had rained earlier in the day and a thick fog was forming in a hollow as they passed a nearby horse farm. Suddenly Betsy exclaimed, "Look, Mom, that cloud fell down!" (Later she asked if her father could fix it. She carried them carefully as she got down from the table, but a few minutes later asked Mommy where her "lady bugs" were. Trying not to laugh, Mommy said, "I don't know. Where did you put your lady bugs?" Arwen replied, "Daddy sat on them. I'm sad." She had placed them on a chair cushion, and Daddy didn't see the tiny crumbs when he sat down. Daddy apologized profusely, and got up to find the "lady bugs." Arwen rescued her "lady bug" crumbs from the chair and promptly ate them, declaring, "All gone lady bugs!" -- Arwen's mom in Michigan Tamlyn's 3-year-old was sitting in front of the TV on the floor with his legs crossed. He was engrossed in the program. When the program ended he stood up. Then he looked down at his feet with a frown and said, "Mommy, my feet have Rice Krispies in them!"
