Amazing! More amazing is her life and attitude. Her parents moved to Tamaqua to a house on Railroad Street in 1918. The fourth of ten children, she spent her early years picking coal and huckleberries to help the family get through the Great Depression. She has so many warm and good memories of growing up in tough times. She shared one bed with two sisters. She saw many things including the Hindenberg blimp, just before it met its demise in New Jersey. Being on that street, she also witnessed hundreds of "Troop Trains" taking the boys off the WWII, often handing homemade treats to them through the open windows. During her young adult life, she and Uncle Pete traveled, sometimes with Aunt Josephine and Uncle Joey, visiting shrines and baseball parks around the country. Aunt Helen lost Uncle Pete to Cancer in September, 1965. I remember how brokenhearted everyone was about it. Uncle Pete was a great guy with a most generous heart and terrific funny bone. After Uncle Petsey died, she moved from their apartment back home to Gram Baddick's and her childhood home. Many people in town know her as one of the servers in her clean crisp white uniform and apron at the St. Jerome's First Holy Communion breakfast. Some of the ladies made and served the class breakfast while parents waited in the back of the gym which was decorated by none other than... Aunt Helen! Aunt Helen decorated everything and anything using just about everything and anything! I remember one centerpiece that was a styrofoam base sporting a Christmas yard scene. Strung atop was a miniature Santa Claus and sleigh. It was such a magical scene! Aunt Helen always had a ton of construction paper to use and make things. She would often sit and color with me either in a book or on a page where you would draw a picture adding sparkles if you wanted! Nobody else ever had sparkles at their house! Aunt Helen is also the only aunt who would make peanut butter and marshmallow on crackers! She also had Oreos. I asked my mom why she never made these and she explained, "I bake cookies. Why would ever you want to eat those store bought cookies?" Over the years our photos show her sitting on the floor with one or many of us kids, playing a game or quietly telling us a story, or coloring. Truly, it was more her presence that we enjoyed. Not so much what she did, but just being with her. That is the greatest lesson -- it is not about the stuff, it's about the love, attention and time that she gave us. When she turned 80, I asked her for some sage life advice. She told me, "Jeannie Marie, expect nothing! Take the word 'expect' out of your vocabulary. Then, everything nice in life will be a wonderful surprise and your will never be disappointed!" At 97, she still lives by her advice. May she live as she hopes for 100 years as we say in Polish -- "STO LAT!" -- Jeannie Paslawsky __________________________________________________ Jeannie was born and raised in the anthracite region in Tamaqua, PA, and now resides in Willow Grove. She has worked in telecommunications and was always an avid writer. For many it's been filled with pain and tears. We've seen our loved ones in their decline. We've had to accept that they won't be fine. Some of us had to say good bye, To a long time loved one, and we've all cried. But there have been times in this past year, That certain events have brought us cheer. There are so many friends that are on the list, And I know there's names I will have missed. But better friends I could not have bought. And here is just a New Year's thought. If it were possible that a wish could come true, Then this is my New Year's wish for you. May the coming year be full of hope, And may we be given the strength to cope. Failure, rejection, and guilt are some of the side effects of living life in a sin sick world and we are all going to experience them at some time or another. Its not a matter of if, but of when. We need to know how to deal with them. Instead of getting shook up, we need to shake off. We need to know that our security is not based on our worldly success or rejection, and that failure is never final with God. When we confess our guilt to God or to others we may have wronged and ask for forgiveness with godly sorrow and repentance there is absolutely no reason in the world for us to hold on to guilt. If we do not learn to shake off failure, rejection, or guilt we are doomed to the crippling effects of living as losers instead of as the winner’s Christ has made us to be when we receive by grace through faith the salvation and righteousness He died to earn for us. When we learn, by the grace of God, to shake off the failures, rejections, and guilts of our yesterdays and focus on moving on to the bright future God has prepared for all those who love Him and are called according to His purposes, we can be sure that God can and will create a new heart and renew a right spirit within us as He did for David and the disciples. God will not only restore the joy of our salvation when we shake off our sins through daily confession and repentance, He will provide the all sufficient grace to see us through any other failures, rejections or sins that might beset us. What peace and joy there is in learning how to “shake it off.” -<>- One day, a man went to visit a church. He got there early, parked his car, and got out. Another car pulled up and the driver got out and said, "I always park there! You took my place!" The visitor went inside for Sunday School, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, "That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but said nothing. After Sunday School, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down. Another member walked up to him and said, "That's where I always sit! You took my place!" The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still He said nothing. Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them, the visitor stood up, and his appearance began to change. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and on his sandaled feet. Someone from the congregation noticed him and called out, "What happened to you?" The visitor replied, as his hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from his eye, “I took your place." -<>- .--.-. ( ( )__ (_, \ ) ,_) '- \\---' _\\ \\ . Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them, a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box. 'Oh mommy please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy, please?' Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face. 'A dollar ninety-five. That's almost $2.00. If you really want them, I'll think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday's only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma.' As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17 pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went to the neighbor and asked Mrs. McJames if she could pick dandelions for ten cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at last she had enough money to buy the necklace. Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She wore them everywhere, Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath. Mother said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green. Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story. One night as he finished the story, he asked Jenny, 'Do you love me?' 'Oh yes, daddy. You know that I love you.' 'Then give me your pearls' 'Oh, daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess, the white horse from my collection, the one with the pink tail. Remember, daddy? The one you gave me. She's my very favorite.' 'That's okay, Honey, daddy loves you. Good night.' And he brushed her cheek with a kiss. About a week later, after the story time, Jenny's daddy asked again, 'Do you love me?' 'Daddy, you know I love you.' 'Then give me your pearls.' 'Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new one I got for my birthday. She is beautiful and you can have the yellow blanket that matches her sleeper.' 'That's okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you.' And as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss. A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed with her legs crossed Indian style. As he came close, he noticed her chin was trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek. 'What is it, Jenny? What's the matter?' Jenny didn't say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little quiver, she finally said, 'Here, daddy; this is for you.' With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny's daddy reached out with one hand to take the dime store necklace, and with the other hand he reached into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her the genuine treasure. So it is, with our Heavenly Father. He is waiting for us to give up the cheap things in our lives so that he can give us beautiful treasures. God will never take away something without giving you something better in its place. Although we visit our families in the U.S.A. once a year, we didn't really give much thought to the changes my husband's aging parents and aunts were going through. Suddenly there was only one person left: his mother. His mom is a diabetic in her mid-80s, a heart attack survivor with bad knees, and an independent lady whose English is an increasingly rusty second language now that she is alone. Her driving has become more erratic, and she falls more frequently. The house she loves and has lived in for over 40 years has become challenging for her. She is faced with making it safer or moving to senior housing. We made separate yearly visits to give her more company, but otherwise could only try to help from afar. Sometimes our help led to more problems, such as when I arranged to have my mother- in-law's many medications mailed to her. This eliminated the one-hour drive that she had been making for years to a military base pharmacy. As a result, she had to frequently hobble down her steep front steps and walk up an incline along an open drainage ditch to get to her street side mailbox. I applied for a nonprofit community development grant to install a ramp in place of her steps, but the slope of the lawn made the ramp too expensive. On other occasions, we couldn't get the resources my mother-in-law needed right away. On my last visit, she had trouble standing for more than 10 minutes because of a fall. On her limited income, she couldn't afford a helper, so I contacted the county senior services for light housekeeping services. However, there was a waiting list and it was months later when the housekeeping service became available. During the application process, to our surprise, my mother-in-law was assigned a social worker specializing in senior citizens. I assumed it this was just to verify that she needed the service. I didn't realize that Lori, the social worker, could and would do much more. Lori makes home visits and takes the time to patiently understand what my mother-in-law's needs are. She has gone with my mother-in-law to the doctor, arranged for a mailbox and mail delivery at the front door, and even pushed through a modified, affordable version of the stalled ramp project. Lori has even driven my mother-in-law to see several senior housing complexes. On top of all this, she emails me updates to let me know about options and resources. I know it's Lori's job to know what to do and who to go to in order to resolve issues common to senior citizens; however, Lori doesn't stop there. When there is something that would help my mother-in-law, Lori runs with it and sees it through -- as if my mother-in-law were her only case. Thank you, Lori, for making such a difference, both for my mother-in-law and for us. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From CupO'Cheer: QUOTES Christ walked on the water before He calmed the storm. [edited] Isaiah 50:11 “But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires. This is the reward you will receive from me: You will soon lie down in great torment.” I’ve always been very independent. I’m not afraid to do things on my own—in fact, a lot of the time I prefer it. If I do things alone, there’s nobody to mess things up or to complain or to have a different agenda than mine. Self-sufficiency is good, right? Of course not. According to this verse, Ouch! God didn’t consider it enough to just say, “Don’t do everything on your own.” If that was all He would have said, we might think there wasn’t much in the way of consequences for disobeying. Jesus said (Matthew 6:1-2) that if we do things for the admiration of others, we already have our reward here on earth and we lose our reward in heaven. But God’s message through Isaiah takes that one step further: If we bask in our own glory, not only do we lose our reward in heaven, but that lack of heavenly reward means torment in hell. It’s a steep price to pay. How guilty are you of standing in your own strength? What value do you place on doing as much as you can without needing any help? How might the Lord be wanting to stretch you in ways that can only be accomplished with His help or with the help of His people? May we receive the glorious reward that comes from dependence on the Lord our God through Jesus Christ. He had a serious disability, dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy. His disability interrupted automatic functioning like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. As a result, he needed a breathing tube and ventilator; a tube was inserted into the top of his heart to administer medicines and IV fluids. Mattie was confined to wheelchair. He died just weeks before his fourteenth birthday. But that didn't stop him from becoming a bestselling author and poet, an award-winning speaker, and a recognized advocate for disability and peacemaking. All five of of Heart-songs series of poetry books were New York Times bestsellers. Before he became confined to his wheelchair, he had earned a first-degree black belt in the martial art hapkido. Despite the challenges of his situation, he was a practical joker who lived by the philosophy "Remember to play after every storm." Mattie's enthusiasm for life was infectious, and people around the world were touched not just by the poetry he wrote and the words he spoke, but by the example of how he lived his life. Mattie refused to allow circumstances to control his destiny. Rather, he mastered his circumstances. The fact is, all leadership begins with self-mastery. You can't lead others until you can first lead yourself. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world." To truly lead, and make a difference in the world, you must always start with yourself." Despite the prophesies of Harold Camping, we made it through 2011] without seeing the return of Jesus Christ. Camping, you will recall, is the one who predicted that Christ would return on May 21, 2011, and when that didn't happen, he revised his predicted date to October 21, 2011. I am hard pressed to explain the motives of people who try to predict the date of the second coming of Christ, and even more, to explain the gullibility of those who continue to believe them in the face of Jesus’ own words: “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” - Mark 13:32. Do I believe Jesus is going to return personally, visibly, and bodily? Absolutely yes. Do I believe that his return will bring time as we know it to an end? Yes. Do I believe his return will result in a separation of the saved and the lost for all eternity? Yes. Then why am I not interested in trying to figure out when that return will be? As Rubel Shelly has put it, for the same reason that I have never needed anybody to stand guard and tell me when my wife was pulling up in the driveway or coming into the room. I am her husband when we are together and when we are apart, and I will be faithful to her in either setting. I think God knew that if he gave us the precise time of Christ’s return that the natural tendency of folks would be to put off following Christ till the last minute. That’s only natural. Parents and teens have experienced this first hand. If the parents leave the house in the morning and say, “We’ll be back at 5:00 this afternoon. We expect for the kitchen to be clean when we get back”, what happens? You know exactly what happens. The teens watch TV, play on the computer, read their books until 4:30. And then it’s a mad rush to get it finished before Mom and Dad walk through the door! But suppose the parents leave in the morning and they say, “We’ll be back after a while. We expect for the kitchen to be clean when we return”, now what happens? A precise time hasn’t been given. So the teens go through a thought process something like this -- “I can probably get away with waiting until noon until I get started -- but no, they could come home earlier than that -- the only safe thing to do is clean it now and keep it clean till they get back.” When you don’t know the exact time that someone is coming, it changes your whole outlook on getting ready. That’s why Jesus said, “It could be in a few years, it could be in a few decades, it could be in a few centuries, it could be in a few millennia. It doesn’t matter that you know when it is, it only matters that you know that it’s going to happen, that you get yourself ready now, and that you stay ready.” I love the story that’s told about Colonel Davenport, a former Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives. On May 19th, 1780 the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand. They started calling for an immediate adjournment, but Davenport rose up and said, "The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought." I like his thinking. If Jesus Christ is coming in the next few minutes, I want him to find me doing what I’m supposed to be doing. Bring on the candles! “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.” (Matthew 24:42). Have a great day! As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners.... he is a joy to be around.." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class." By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to." After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets." A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life. Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer.... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD. The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that Spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference." Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back. She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you!" (For those of you who don't know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.) Warm someone's heart today. . . pass this along. She didn't have a sled on hand when the grandkids wanted to go outside and slide. Someone mentioned "a cookie sheet" so Ginger went out with her biggest cookie sheet and gave the grandkids the "Olden Days" story of "back in my times they didn't have sleds" because all grandmas are "ancient." Of course, the grandkids believed her and tried the cookie sheet in their sloped yard, clear down to the woods. Next came a clothes basket and a box! They had a ball. Later they laughed and Ginger let them know they DID have sleds back then, but now her grandkids can tell their friends they have done something others may have never done. And they can say Grandma keeps her sled in her oven drawer! -- Ginger Kennedy of Garrett, Indiana Several years ago when their grandson, Andrew was 4 or 5, Linda was sitting with him at the breakfast bar drinking some hot chocolate and talking about how much her brothers were beginning to look like her father (who had passed away before Andrew was born).
