Most of my classmates and I went to school together from the time we were in Kindergarten. Like all seniors in high school, before and after us, we all promised to keep in touch. We did for a while, and then real life got in the way. We all at some point moved off and moved on. Everyone but Karen. Karen was our "special" classmate. Yes, the term used today implies that she was slow, simple and unable to keep up with us. But when we said special we meant just that -- she was special! She didn't have a mean bone in her body and she was completely devoted to us. That earned her our respect, love and protection. After graduation, Karen remained at home with her parents. Her mom died, and she helped her dad with their produce business. Through all of her comings and goings in the town we all outgrew, she would see our families and ask about us. Sometimes she talked to family members that we weren't even talking to ourselves. It didn't matter to her that they seemed hesitant to confide, or be overly negative -- she wanted to know, so she asked. Because of her curiosity, she had a wealth of information, useful and not so useful, about the class of 1979. The few times I talked to her over the years, she would fill me in on everyone, and then pump me for the little details that made my life uniquely mine. Karen found out I was back "home" and started to call. Most of the time I wouldn't talk to her, because I wasn't talking to anyone. But sometimes, for reasons unknown to me, I would answer the phone and just listen to her. She talked about the most mundane things. Where she had eaten, a yard sale she went to, what she bought. She didn't care that I had nothing to say -- my occasional breathing on the other end was enough for her. She would catch me up on everyone and ask me questions I couldn't answer. Then she would just say goodbye, while assuring me she would call again. In my darkness her light started penetrating. I started to look forward to her calls. I started to participate in them. I came out of my room and stepped back into life. Then I got too busy to talk to her. Months went by. I heard from people in the community that she was sick. They said she had cancer. Guilt ridden, I called her and finally made the time to speak with her. We talked for some time. She was so happy that I had actually reconnected with her. She never mentioned being sick. We made plans to go out for pizza the next Monday night. She wanted to invite another classmate of ours that she kept in touch with, Sally. At the end of that call she said, "I love you, Cory." My mind registered a goodbye. I picked Karen up and was unprepared for what I saw. She was skeletal. I knew then it was serious. After dinner that night, Sally and I talked and we both felt an urgency. We wanted to get all of the classmates that we could find locally together and have a class reunion. Neither of us felt that Karen would make it until 2009. What happened next was short of amazing. People we had not seen or talked to for almost 28 years were found with ease. We had phone numbers, addresses, everything we needed. We set it for two weeks away and I started making all the arrangements. No one was more excited than Karen. The "reunion" was at her funeral a few days later -- just 5 days away from the one we had planned. This past May, the class of 1979 met once again for our 30th class reunion. In the year and a half since her death, something amazing had taken place. The contact we made with each other to rally for her, continued after she died. We made a connection, we kept in touch. Our class reunion felt more like a family reunion. And there is nothing simple about that! -- Corrina Jayne Hyde ______________________________________________ Cory is from Atoka, Oklahoma. I remember the polished, old case fastened to the Wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talked to it. Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person. Her name was "Information Please" and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anyone's number and the correct time. My personal experience with the genie-in-a-bottle came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer, the pain was terrible, but there seemed no point in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. The telephone! Quickly, I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing. Climbing up, I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear. "Information, please," I said into the mouthpiece just above my head. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear. "Information." "I hurt my finger..." I wailed into the phone, the tears came readily enough now that I had an audience. "Isn't your mother home?" came the question. "Nobody's home but me," I blubbered. "Are you bleeding?" the voice asked. "No,"I replied. "I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts." "Can you open the icebox?" she asked. I said I could. "Then chip off a little bit of ice and hold it to your finger," said the voice.. After that, I called "Information Please" for everything. I asked her for help with my geography, and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my maths. She told me my pet chipmunk that I had caught in the park just the day before, would eat fruit and nuts. Then, there was the time Petey, our pet canary, died. I called, "Information Please," and told her the sad story. She listened, and then said things grown-ups say to soothe a child. But I was not consoled. I asked her, "Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?" She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, "Wayne, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in." Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone, "Information Please." "Information," said in the now familiar voice. "How do I spell fix?" I asked. All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was nine years old, we moved across the country to Boston. I missed my friend very much. "Information Please" belonged in that old wooden box back home and I somehow never thought of trying the shiny new phone that sat on the table in the hall. As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. Often, in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy. A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about a half-hour or so between planes. I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, "Information Please." Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well. "Information." I hadn't planned this, but I heard myself saying, "Could you please tell me how to spell fix?" There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, "I guess your finger must have healed by now." I laughed, "So it's really you," I said. "I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time?" "I wonder," she said, "if you know how much your call meant to me. I never had any children and I used to look forward to your calls." I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister. "Please do," she said. "Just ask for Sally." Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered, "Information." I asked for Sally. "Are you a friend?" she said. "Yes, a very old friend," I answered. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this," She said. "Sally had been working part time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago." Before I could hang up, she said, "Wait a minute, did you say your name was Wayne ?" " "Yes." I answered. Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. "Let me read it to you." The note said, "Tell him there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean." I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant. Others only ridiculed Him and refused to open their hearts. He preached to many people all across the land. He made the lame walk again just by holding out His hand. Jesus walked on water and made the blind see once again. He was their Saviour, and a fisher of all men. One day God told Him that it was time for Him to part. God knew that by His Son's spilled blood, we could cleanse our sin filled hearts. They hung His body on the cross and laid thorns upon His head, Mary stood there watching as they pronounced her son, dead. God raised Jesus from the dead so he could be eternally by His side. John had a good job and had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city and would be gone for several days. It was decided that Mary needed an outing and would go along too. They hired a reliable woman to care for the children and made the trip, returning home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove into their hometown feeling glad to be back, they noticed smoke, and they went off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames. Mary said, "Oh well it isn't our fire, let's go home." But John drove closer and exclaimed, "That home belongs to Fred Jones who works at the plant. He wouldn't be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do." "It has nothing to do with us." Protested Mary. "You have your good clothes on lets not get any closer." But John drove up and stopped and they were both horror stricken to see the whole house in flames. A woman on the lawn was in hysterics screaming, "The children! Get the children!" John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, "Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!" "In the basement," sobbed the woman, "down the hall and to the left." In spite of Mary's protests John grabbed the water hose and soaked his clothes, put his wet handkerchief on his head and bolted for the basement which was full of smoke and scorching hot. He found the door and grabbed two children, holding one under each arm like the football player he was. As he left he could hear some more whimpering. He delivered the two badly frightened and nearly suffocated children into waiting arms and filled his lungs with fresh air and started back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, "John! Don't go back! It's suicide! That house will cave in any second!" But he shook her off and went back by feeling his way down the smoke filled hallway and into the room. It seemed an eternity before he found both children and started back. They were all three coughing and he stooped low to get what available air he could. As he stumbled up the endless steps the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping. --- ...Makes me think of this verse... The worst war in the history of this world had came to a end. Now I remember my mother telling about November 11,1918 She said the people stood in the streets and sounded any thing that would blow, fired guns. Beat on pots and pans...any thing that would make a racket was brought out. That was the war to end all wars. People were glad it was over. School was forgot about for the day. That was the city of Thayer, Missouri. We lived in Lexington,Missouri When the last big one came to a end. No school to turn out. It was August. I do not remember any one doing any thing in the way of making a racket. No fire works, no noise of any kind. I think people just went home and gave thinks to God it is at last over, each in their own way. I remember what we did. Dad got a watermelon and we went home and feasted on it. I don't recall any thing else. I guess we had supper later. As I recall the news came in about 2 PM. Now the history books say it was later. But ever store in town closed up by 3 PM. Wentworth Military School was about 2 blocks from where we lived. And the band was out playing that wonderful March...Stars and Strips Forever, over and over.. That was Lexington. Well, think it's time to get a watermelon..I try to have watermelon on August 14th... And Remember. To me, this date was the end of that war. The date in the history books says 2 Sept 1945, which I guess is the true date. That would be the date the papers was signed on the Battleship. USS Missouri. Which now stands guard duty near her sister ship USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. A war that started for us on Dec. 7. 1941 at Pearl, ended in Tokyo Harbor. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Military WWII Posters! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/militarywwii.html Sgt.Stubby War Dog Hero! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/stubbywardog.html Kilroy Was Here http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/kilroywashere.html World Of Peacocks! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/peacock.html Feeding The Eagles! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/eaglefeeding.html Keukenhof Gardens! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/kgardens.html Newsworthy Animals! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/newsanimals.html Margaret The Giraffe! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/giraffe.html Odin The White Tiger! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/whitetiger.html Molly The Speckled Pony! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/molly.html MacGyver - How To Do It 4! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/macgyver4.html -<>- >From Our Friend Geniann :) She sent us one we have here... USA TODAY once reported a story which demonstrates this fact very well. Milwaukee Hamilton High School had a 22-15 lead against Milwaukee Marshall with just a few seconds left in a football game one Friday night in September of 1983. It appeared to be a sure victory. With only four seconds remaining, Hamilton, which was on its 40-yard line, snapped the ball to Jose Alba. Alba ran back toward his end zone to run out the clock, then tossed the ball into the air as time expired, thinking the game was over, and the victory belonged to him and his teammates. But, remember-in football, the play is not finished until the ball is downed while in the possession of a player. So when the ball came down, one of Marshall's players, Floyd Heard, picked it up on the five and ran it in for a touchdown. Then with time expired, Marshall attempted the two-point conversion-and made it. They won the game 23-22. There are many times in our lives when we're on the losing side of the scoreboard, and time is running out. If Floyd Heard had believed what the circumstances told him, he would have walked to the sideline, accepting defeat. Yet that is what we do so many times in our lives. The game - nor life - is over until it's over. Be encouraged! Don't give up! Stay the course! "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." (Luke 18:1 NIV) "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9 NIV) --- ...Aww, such good advice! Thanks LouiseA! ========================================================= >The Little Town That Did Story Editor: by Jackie Wilson Goddard Joyce Schowalter Kansas, USA On October 13, 2007, my husband was diagnosed with Stage Four rectal cancer. It was also in his groin lymph nodes. Although not one doctor mentioned the odds of survival, through the Internet, I learned the prognosis was a grim 8 percent. Rick never asked. The treatment plan included six weeks of daily radiation supplemented by chemotherapy by pump, followed by six weeks of recovery. Then surgery. Then another six weeks of recovery and finally six months of weekly chemotherapy. Our 200-person rural town is 90 miles from the cancer center. Rick wanted to continue working as the custodian at the elementary school, so we scheduled the treatments for late afternoon. His sister and a friend offered to drive if I had to work or just needed a break. The schoolchildren were heartsick. One boy added Rick to his nightly prayers. Another informed his mother, "My janitor is sick." When she explained the doctors were doing everything to make him better, the boy replied, "I know. I just don't want him to be sick." The children voluntarily gave up recess to do small jobs to help. Rick's co-workers were equally supportive. None of Rick's treatment went according to plan. Twice, radiation caused skin burns, and treatments were suspended until he healed. The surgery, 270 miles away, finally took place five months later. Due to complications, a second surgery and setbacks, his "10-day hospital stay" became three months. One neighbor kept our dogs for five weeks, another took the next nine. Another came twice weekly to tend the cat and plants. Others mowed the lawn. Rick regularly received large envelopes of cards from the children. Calls and cards from family and friends were sometimes the only bright spot among all the discouragement. One friend drove 180 miles just to stop and see how we were. Rick's co-workers donated their vacation and sick time so he received his full wages. Family and friends took up a collection to cover my expenses and lodging. Each act, large or small, enveloped us in a warm blanket of love that we were determined to return in kind. For three glorious weeks after Rick came home, we believed he would recover. Then a CT scan revealed another large mass in his abdomen and a small one on his lung. In a matter of days, Rick's condition deteriorated drastically and our family doctor said the remaining time was only a matter of weeks. The hospice program provided equipment, fantastic nursing and emotional support. The $600 ambulance fee to bring Rick home was waived by the County Commissioners. The school board put Rick on "temporary leave" to retain his employee status. Food was delivered daily. Family members stayed with Rick when I had to work. The hospital administrator volunteered to sit with Rick one afternoon when everyone's schedules conflicted. Ten months after his diagnosis, Rick passed away quietly at our home, in the arms of an entire town. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: ___, _.-'` __|__ .' ,-:` \;',`'-, / .'-;_,; ':-;_,'. / /; '/ , _`.-\ | | '`. (Nana is still laughing!) -- Kathleen McDade of Denver, Pennsylvania When Bonnie's son Larry was 6 (he's now 43) he loved worms, snakes, hunting, fishing and was a real dare devil. But Bonnie discovered he had a soft side, too, the day she found the kitchen window covered with live butterflies. Thinking she could get a closer look at this wonder of nature from the inside of the house she slowly approached the window and much to her surprise the butterflies flew all around the kitchen. Her first words were "Larry!" He answered, "Mom, it's supposed to be cold outside tonight and they don't have any way to keep warm. If I hadn't caught them all and brought them inside they would have died." (They set them free the next morning.) -- Bonnie Brownell of Albion, Indiana Darrel and Tina had taken their grandson Eli, 4, camping over the 4th of July when a friend's older granddaughter asked his name. He only said, "Eli." She asked his last name. He wasn't sure what to answer so Tina asked him, "What does Mommy call you when she's mad?" Eli promptly pointed his finger at his grandmother and said, "Go to your room!" -- Darrel and TinaRensberger of Warsaw, Indiana ///| ///| ///| ///| /// | //////// | /// | |=| ////| |=|///|=| ////| |=| | | |//// //| |===| |//// //| | | | |===|///| | | |===|///| | | | | |===| | | | |===| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | / jgs |=|===|===|=|===|=|===|===|=|/ ````````````````````````````` Barbara was in the grocery store with her grandson Dylan, 7, and his family. Dylan tried to climb under the top of the shopping cart onto its bottom shelf, and in the process he snagged the fingernail of his pinky finger, tearing the nail back. After leaving the store, the family approached the gas station in their car. Dylan asked, "Can we park in the handicapped space now?" -- Barbara Briles of Cutler, Indiana Chris, 5, went out to eat with members of his extended family. The restaurant was crowded but they finally got seated and were trying to decide what to eat. A family member said she would love a salad but better not because it would not agree with her. Chris responded in a very loud voice, "because it will go right ‘fru' her (right through her)!" Needless to say the family member was embarrassed because everyone in the area heard his comment. -- Angie White (aunt of Chris) of Virginia Earlier this summer Matt Getts wrote an article for The News Sun about Mallory Jackson's lemonade stand. She was raising money to help a family in need. Because of the article, Mallory, 7, doubled the amount she made. And she even got some radio publicity. With all the extra attention, Mallory was beside herself. At one point she said, "Mommy, can I have a break? Now that I'm famous I don't get a break anymore." -- Dawn Jackson (mother of Mallory) of Kendallville, Indiana ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Fran :) . , '. And He will raise you up on eagles' wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand. The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield. And He will raise you up on eagles' wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand. You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come. And He will raise you up on eagles' wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand. For to His angels He's given a command to guard you in all of your ways' upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
