Two vultures board an airplane, each carrying two dead raccoons. The stewardess looks at them and says, "I'm sorry, Gentlemen. Only one carrion allowed per passenger." 2. Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils. 3. There were two Eskimos sitting in a kayak. They were cold so they lit a fire, and the craft sank. It only proved, once again, that you can't have your kayak and heat it, too. 4. A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces, "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw." 5. Did you hear about the Buddhist who refused Novocaine during a root canal? He wanted to transcend dental medication. 6. A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer." 7. A woman has twins and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Ahmal." The other goes to a family in Spain and they name him "Juan." Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, "They're twins! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal." 8. These friars were behind on their belfry payments, so they opened up a small florist shop to raise funds. Since everyone liked to buy flowers from the men of God, a rival florist across town thought the competition was unfair. He asked the good brothers to close down, but they would not. He went back and begged the friars to close. They ignored him. So, the rival florist hired Hugh MacTaggart, the roughest and most vicious thug in town to "persuade" them to close. Hugh beat up the friars and trashed their store, saying he'd be back if they didn't close up shop. Terrified, they did so, thereby proving that Hugh, and only Hugh, can prevent florist friars. 9. Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time, which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing."1 “Down the streets of Portsmouth more than two hundred years ago," said Lt. General Ira C. Eaker in a speech given some time ago, "walked a sailor with one arm, one eye, and a persistent state of nerves and unable to tread a ship's deck without being seasick. Indeed he would probably have been in a home for incurables were his name not Admiral Lord Nelson. The man's spirit drove the flesh." Born in 1758, Horatio Nelson, the son of a pastor, was a small, frail child who loved sailing. As a young teenager he joined the British navy and, while journeying to the East Indies, caught a fever that seriously damaged his health. But he never allowed this to hold him back. At age 18 he was appointed a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and by the year 1802 was made commander-in-chief of the British fleet. Two years later, at the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets. This was the greatest naval victory in British history and left the British in control of the seas for the rest of the 1800s. Unfortunately, Nelson was mortally wounded during Trafalgar but lived long enough to know that his fleet had won the battle. His last words were, "Thank God I have done my duty." Nelson was a man of fearless courage and devotion. He believed in his country, in his cause, and in himself. He proved this with his words and more so with his life. He once said, "I am of the opinion that the boldest measures are the safest." Nelson was a man greatly admired by others who said about him, "His frail body housed a great spirit." John Stuart Mill would agree. He said, "One person with a belief is equal to a force of ninety-nine who only have interest."2 No matter what your limitations or your handicaps are, God has a plan and purpose for your life. Believe it and you will receive it. Act on it and you will achieve it and like the Apostle Paul you, too, will be able to say, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Suggested prayer: "Dear God, help me to so believe and live that when I come to the end of life's journey, I too will be able to say, 'Thank God that I have done my duty.' Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus's name, amen." 1. 2 Timothy 4:6-8 (NIV). 2. Adapted from "The Power of Belief" by Dick Innes at http://tinyurl.com/79peh. <:((((>< >The Door "So Jesus said to them again, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.'"1 George Adam Smith, the 19th century biblical scholar, tells of traveling one day in the holy land and coming across a shepherd and his sheep. He fell into conversation with him and the man showed him the fold into which the sheep were led at night. It consisted of four walls, with a way in. Smith asked him, "This is where they go at night?" "Yes," said the shepherd, "and when they are in there, they are perfectly safe." "But there is no door," said Smith. "I am the door," said the shepherd. He was not a Christian man and wasn't speaking in the language of the New Testament. He was speaking from an Arab shepherd's viewpoint. Smith looked and him and asked, "What do you mean, 'you are the door'?" "When the light has gone," said the shepherd, "and all the sheep are inside, I lie in that open space, and no sheep ever goes out but across my body, and no wolf comes in unless he crosses my body; I am the door." And that's what Jesus is for all of His children, the sheep of His pasture. Suggested prayer, "Dear God, thank You that we have the promise that Jesus is always with us no matter in what circumstances we find ourselves, and that He is the door to watch and guard over each one of His children--including me. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus's name, amen." 1. John 10:7 (NASB). By emb , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Have you ever been in the middle and not sure of which way to go? I'm there today. I've been a Christian since a small child raised in the Methodist church. I started seriously studying God's Word, the bible, in the early 70's. During this time, I have come to rely on only certain places for what I consider the 'rightly divided' word of God. I trust them the most to give me the truth of God's Word in their teachings. Because of my trust in them, I share them with you. I feel, as I do so, I am being held accountable to God. All those that take on the feeding of God's flock must do the best they can to provide accurate teachings - good food. 2 Tim.2: [15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Not just study or read the bible - but rightly dividing it so as not to be ashamed. Why be so concerned? Because the bible tells us... Eph.6: [11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. [13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth (the Word of God), and having on the breastplate of righteousness; [15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace (the Word of God); [16] Above all, taking the shield of faith (believing), wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. [17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: [18] Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit (speaking in tongues), and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Heb.4 [12] For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It is important to rightly divide the Bible because it is our weapon against the devil. If you are not being taught the correct or rightly divided Word of God, you are in essence using a toy weapon. Just think how effective your weapon would be if you are in a battle for your life against an armed robber and you hold up a toy to fight him off with? Your odds wouldn't be very good against a skilled intruder. So it is with God's Word. It is our weapon against the devil. We need to know it as best we can so we may be able to use it at any given moment. You can be sure the devil knows it inside and out. He can easily twist it and turn it so you are second guessing what is God's Word and what isn't. Just like he did with Eve. Which was mankind's downfall. So, I am very particular as to what teachings I study. I like to be sure that the teacher is giving me the best accurate teaching of God's Word. I am very picky in other words. As we all should be about what we eat physically and spiritually. However, I am a bit in the middle as it pertains to this one teaching that I am going to share today with you. I came across two opposing views on this subject from my two highly credible bible teaching sources. Let's get this straight so you understand. I do not study the original language or biblical text like these sources do. I generally accept their teaching because they are biblical scholars of the original text. They are well learned and way above my expertise of the bible. They study and teach it as professional men and women of God. While they are both separate teachers in different states and on different websites, I've rarely come across anything they have not agreed on - that is until today. That puts me in the middle. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' A friend posted this verse... Romans 13: 1 -- Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. They felt we needed to not make waves politically since God chose our leaders... So I had to look it up. I found a teaching about this on one of my favorite sites and the teaching taught against the traditional thinking that this was saying that God is the one who ultimately determines our civil leaders. They taught it was saying the people God called to be teachers and leaders are ordained by God and we need to be subject unto them. This made sense to me because I couldn't much understand why God would choose leaders or kings or rulers that in the Old Testament He had His people go to battle against and overthrow. I started out thinking today I was going to share what I had learned with you from this teaching I had looked up and studied on Tuesday. Then in popped a notion that I needed to first see what my other site said about it. I had studied something about this on there years ago so I went to the Truth Or Tradition site and found that they had a contrary view on the verse. They said it did not refer to Christian leaders but to civil political leaders. So I thought that I wasn't going to share this with you since I now was in the middle. Two of my well trusted authorities on the rightly divided Word of God are giving two different viewpoints. But, as usual, I go with God and I felt compelled to share this with you so you could make up your own mind as to what you believe is right. Here is the first view point I found: Resentment Of Discipline http://www.absolutebiblestudy.com/Advanced/RESENTMENT_OF_DISCIPLINE.htm And here is the other one from Truth Or Tradition site: Civil Government: God’s Design for Peace and Justice https://tinyurl.com/yxw44tte Just from my own understanding of God, I lean toward the first one, but I am not feeling comfortable in proclaiming it to be referring to Christian leaders. We all know we have had false and deceitful church leaders. Ones that even killed their spouse to be with another and pedophiles and the evil list goes on. 2 Cor.11: [13] For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. [14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. [15] Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. We are taught to not blindly submit ourselves to any leader in the church... 1 John 4: [1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. So, here we are back to this... , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Romans 13: 1 -- Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. The higher powers are of course from and ordained by God Almighty. God set the universe in order and all in it. God in His foreknowledge has set and ordained everything according to His precision and His good power throughout His creation. He saw that it was all good. I don't believe this is referring to civil political powers, rulers, kings, or Christian church leaders. If I am to be subject to anyone or anything, I am subject and bow only to Jesus Christ my Lord and God Almighty. There are no higher powers. 1 Pet.2: [13] Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; [14] Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. [15] For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: [16] As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. [17] Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear (respect) God. Honor the king. We submit ourselves to the law of the land for God's sake so we may live peacefully and do the Will of God without being thrown in jail. We want to be good witnesses for God. Eph.3: [14] For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, [15] Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, [16] That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [18] May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; [19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. [20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, [21] Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Mazzella It was raining on the day I took my St. Bernard, Buddy to the vet for the last time. It was raining on my windshield, it was raining in my eyes, and it was raining in my soul. My heart was heavy with the sadness of knowing that I would soon be losing a friend who had always touched my soul with his sad face and sweet personality. When he was a puppy I used to carry him around in one arm. Now his 170 lb body was ancient and ailing. Throughout all his life he had protected us with his strength and loved us with his gentleness. He was a part of our family and taking him on this last ride was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. My voice like my spirit felt broken as I told the vet that it was best to end Buddy’s suffering now. I had watched over the last year as he slowed down. He was in a lot of pain. He seemed more and more irritable and uncomfortable with each passing day. Finally there came a point when I knew it was time to let him go. His days here on Earth may have been short by our standards, but every single one of them was full of love. A person who didn’t own dogs once asked me why I would put myself through such pain. Why would I bring dogs into my home knowing that eight, ten, or fifteen years later I would be losing them to death? I couldn’t answer him at the time, but looking back on Buddy’s years with us I think I can now. A dog’s love is unconditional. It is pure. It is strong. It is blessed. It gives us such great happiness. It reminds us of what God’s love for us must be like. It shows us what our own love is capable of becoming. A dog’s love makes us better. If I have to suffer this pain then to have that love then I will do so gladly. Take care dear Buddy until I see you again. You made me better. You helped me to love. You gave me so much joy. I will forever cherish in my heart the years we had here together. -<>- \_/ --(_)-- . / \ /_\ |Q| .-----' '-----. __ /____[SCHOOL]___\ ())) | [] .-.-. Teachers each day will fill lamps, clean chimneys, and trim wicks. 2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and scuttle of coal for the day's sessions. 3. Make your pens carefully: you may whittle nibs to the individual taste of pupils. 4. Men teachers may take one evening each week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly. 5. After 10 hours in school, the teachers spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books. 6. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed. 7. Each teacher should lay aside from each pay a goodly sum of his earnings for his benefit during his declining years so that he will not become a burden on society. 8. Any teacher who smokes, uses liquor in any form, frequents pool or public halls, or get shaved in a barber shop will give good reason to suspect his worth, intentions, integrity and honesty. 9. The teacher who performs his labors faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of 25 cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves. I was intrigued by the wording of #9 above. It sounded somewhat familiar to me. Then it dawned on me that there is a similarity to what Jesus had to say to the seven churches of Asia Minor in Revelation 2 and 3. "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life." (Rev.2:10b) "...[T]hey shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." (Rev. 3:4-5) There are a couple of significant differences, though, between the promise given to teachers in 1872 and the promises given by Jesus. Jesus doesn't require that we live "without fault" (and oh, how I'm thankful for that!). The reward that Jesus promises is considerably better than 25 cents for every five years of service (and I'm thankful for that as well!). And it's not a matter of gaining the approval of a group of men. The only approval that matters is the smile we'll see on our Father's face. Father, thank you for the promises that you have given -- not just the promise of a crown or of white garments, but the promise of an opportunity to be in your presence, to be held in your arms. I don't live before you "without fault", so I thank you for your grace as I seek to live faithfully as your child. I commit all that I am and all that I have to be used in your service. In Jesus Christ's name, amen. Have a great day! Alan Smith -<>- __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >Worship: Offering Yourself to God (By Rick Warren) Offering yourself to God is what worship is all about. This act of personal surrender is called many things: consecration, making Jesus Lord, taking up your cross, dying to self, yielding to the Spirit. What matters is that you do it, not what you call it. God wants your life, all of it - 95 percent is not enough. Our total surrender to God is blocked by several things, including: * Our ignorance of God - not knowing what he's really like; * Our sinful nature - the desire to be God ourselves; and * Our misunderstanding of surrender and the trust that it requires. Can We Trust God? Trust is an essential ingredient to surrender. We won't surrender to God unless we trust him, but we can't trust him until we know him better. Fear keeps us from surrendering, but love casts out all fear. The more you realize how much God loves you, the easier surrender becomes. How do I know God loves me? He gives us many evidences: * God says he loves you (Psalm 145:9); * You're never out of his sight (Psalm 139:3); * He cares about every detail of your life (Matthew 10:30); * He gave you the capacity to enjoy all kinds of pleasure (1 Timothy 6:17b); * He has good plans for your life (Jeremiah 29:11); * He forgives you (Psalm 86:5); * He's patient with you (Psalm 145:8); * He sacrificed his Son for you (Romans 5:8). God loves you infinitely more than you can imagine. "Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship" (Romans 12:1 HCSB). If you want to know how much you matter to God, look at Christ with his arms outstretched on the cross saying, "I love you this much! I'd rather die than live without you." God is not a cruel slave driver or a bully who uses brute force to coerce us into submission. He doesn't try to break our will, but woos us to himself, so that we might offer it freely to him. God is a lover and a liberator, and surrendering brings freedom, not bondage. When we completely surrender ourselves to God through Jesus Christ, we discover that he is not a tyrant but a savior; not a boss, but a Father; not a dictator, but a friend. -<>- >Words KARL MARX DEVOTED his entire life to writing about the demise of capitalism and the coming of communism. He, along with Friedrich Engels, wrote one of the most well-known political treatises in all of history, the Communist Manifesto. As evidence of his keen understanding of the great power of words, Marx is credited with saying: "Give me twenty-six lead soldiers and I will conquer the world!" Who are the twenty-six lead soldiers Marx referred to? They are the twenty six letters of the alphabet on a printing press. THOUGHTS: All words have power and meaning (Isa. 55:11). Jesus said we would be held accountable for even our idle words (Matt. 12:36-37), and Proverbs says that words have the power of life and death (18:21). So the question is not whether words have power. The question is, "What power am I releasing with my words?" If you have sent froth words that hurt, take them back with an apology and replace them with words that heal. The greatest untapped source of healing in life is "pleasant words." How far they've come in just weeks -- not just in miles, but in years, ages, pain and horror. The children's cheeks and eyes are less haunted now, the youngest even leaving his father's arms. His sister who had ceased to speak now breaks silence somewhat, but still won't talk about *IT*. Counseling, suggests a friend. We'll see, says her mother, braiding her child's hair. A French braid is also counseling. They aren't receiving aid from organizations. Every so often they call the Hurricane Katrina survivor aid number, but have never reached a human being, or been called back. Yet they're lucky. Funds were raised to purchase a year's rent in a low-end, cookie-cutter townhouse. Cramped, the kids sharing a bedroom, but better than four in one room in a stranger's house. They have no possessions, but furniture arrives. Used -- but usable. Here, says a plump matron, these dishes for four, a gift, never used. The little boy's jaw drops, "WOW!" at the colorful rooster decorations. His mother hugs the lady. She doesn't cry; she hasn't shed one tear. At the paint counter, mother gently shows a satin rosette. All that remains of their previous life. "From our wedding." Father says, "Just match it." By sunset, the little dwelling has a facade of palest apricot. The children (those around decide) need more attention than public school provides, but -- no money. Inquiries are made. The "progressive" school has no transportation. The Catholic School says no. The Mosque School says yes, has a bus. An old turbaned man arrives. "We're Catholics," says mother. "Yes," he replies, then says to the boy, "Soon you'll be a Catholic who can read." He smiles at the girl's look, reading her mind. "Not required, just modest dress." An elegant white-haired lady whisks mother and daughter off to shop. Outside an old brown man plants pansies, masses of them. Those hanging curtains and art from every continent have also stocked the kitchen with a global selection of edibles. The gracious lady returns. "Tea," she orders her driver, her great-grandson. A fearsome street gang of young men from Mexico and Central America arrive in a burst of shouts, tattoos and alarming automotive sounds. They demand beer and rides home, leaving an automobile they made for father to drive to his new printing company job. Proudly, they concede it hideous and noisy -- but promise it goes forward and backward. "De puras partes, lo hicimos!" The mother looks around at her new neighbors, her new family, in soft white cotton robes of Ethiopia, in saris, salwar kameez, jeans and T-shirts, low baggy pants revealing underwear waistbands. The teenaged street gang, the antique couple, all ages between. She goes quickly to the kitchen. "I don't think we have beer," she begins, then opens the refrigerator, to find beer from Lebanon, Belgium, India, Mexico and Palestine. And she leans against the open door, unable to stop the tears. =======HeroicStories======= >-->Fro CupO'Cheer: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' _____ / \/_ //\__(\_\ |\ ^ ^ | .//_O \O_ \ \_ (_) / \ \_/ / __/\ /\__ / \ \ / / \ / \/\/\/ \ / | . | \ / | . | \ JRO >PRACTICING WHAT WE PREACH I love reading "The Message" translation of the Bible. It is one of the most vibrant modern translations. James 5:13-15 in that version reads this way – "Are you hurting? Pray. Do you feel great? Sing. Are you sick? Call the church leaders together to pray and anoint you with oil in the name of the Master. Believing-prayer will heal you, and Jesus will put you on your feet. And if you've sinned, you'll be forgiven – healed inside and out." How's that work for today? Economy got you down? Pray. Is your heart still pumping? Sing. Are politicians troubling you? Pray. Can you feel God's presence? Sing. You get the message! Isn't it amazing how easily we get frustrated and lose the sense of victory in our lives? We get all bent out of shape over the challenges we face. Praying and singing actually work... so why do we so often wait and use them as a last result? When my kids got sick, the first thing my wife and I did was to pray over them. They weren't healed every time we prayed, but God's ability to heal was never in doubt. We all need to learn to seek God in prayer when faced with difficulties. A smile is a wonderful gift. A kind word can change a life. A song will lift your spirit. A prayer is a powerful force. Let's practice what we preach or quit preaching. Let's really believe what we say we believe... and then live like we believe it. May God give us the courage to share Christ every single day... actively seeking Him for the strength and joy to enter our personal mission fields wearing His name and character. Trust me, He wears well. as seen in firstIMPRESSIONS -<>- ,--. ,--. It revealed the story where the demons that Jesus cast out of a man asked to enter a herd of pigs. Upon hearing that the pigs ran off a cliff and died, one person suddenly asked, "Wait a minute! Did Jesus know that the demons were going to go into the pigs?" Someone responded, "Well, yes." A woman wondered, "Did Jesus reimburse the village for the pigs?" Then for half an hour, they discussed, "Why would Jesus do this?" and "If we invite Jesus into our village, is He going to make us lose all of our property?" After much debate, the elders silenced the group and said, "We think we know what Jesus was teaching us. You know we also have a man in our village that's demon-possessed. He's crazy, and he's worthless. We'd rather he die than even one of our animals." Everyone agreed. "Well we believe that Jesus was trying to teach us that the value of one man's soul is worth more than the economy of the whole village." And the entire group said, "OH!" With the Holy Spirit's guidance, great wisdom came out of this exchange. Just because these villagers were illiterate doesn't mean they were stupid. This whole tribe came to Christ as a result of hearing this. -<>- >THE ONE NO ONE EVER HAD You've heard endless tales of "the one that got away." The baseline stories of this genre are about fish. But there are varieties ranging from perfect mates to ideal jobs to model churches. I am a bit suspicious of them all. It isn't that I am a cynic or less than willing to strive for an ideal. Instead, it is that I believe I have seen people paralyzed by a romantic search for some person, thing, or situation that doesn't exist. Do you really think you know someone who has the perfect work situation, family, or church? The more realistic truth is that every job has challenges, and every company has to deal with threats to its personnel and market. The family that looks happiest and is genuinely solid probably got that way through hard work over a long period of time - and still has setbacks. People who are looking for the perfect church to join are doomed to spend their lives in frustration - or denial. It was a newspaper article that got me to thinking about this the other day. It was an interview with a woman about a marriage enrichment program she and her husband had attended. She allowed that her biggest takeaway from the weekend was the shattering of a myth she had picked up somewhere along the way in her life. The myth she named was thinking that the key to a happy and lasting marriage was finding "the perfect mate" who would make her happy. She was determined to live differently from her discovery that such a delusion actually complicates and undermines happiness. Finding that her first husband was a less-than- perfect male of the species, she had divorced him after three years. Now, only two years into another marriage, she and her second husband were in trouble. Thus they had attended the seminar. I don't want to be overly simplistic here. It isn't enough to acknowledge that the world is imperfect, and it isn't a noble thing to take whatever is dished out to you. There are times when the right thing is to leave a job or company, protect oneself from an abusive mate, or leave a troubled church. But some people may be looking to find what no one has ever had - or ever will attain. Because we are fallible humans in a complex world whose history is polluted with a horrible accumulation of foibles, the delusion that one's goal for living is to discover and live the idyllic state is simply that - a delusion. Your wiser course may be in finding a way to make the present situation a bit better, instead of abandoning it in search of non-existent perfection. as seen in The Fax of Life -<>- _,--._ ,' `. |\ / ,-. ,-. \ /| )o),/ ( ( o )( o ) ) \.(o( /o/// /| `-' `-' |\ \\\o\ / / |\ \( . , )/ /| \ \ | | \o`-/ `\/' \-'o/ | | \ \ `,' `.' / / \. \ `-' ,'| /\ |`. `-' / ,/ \`. `.__,' / / \ \ `.__,' ,'/ \o\ ,' ,' `. `. /o/ \o`---' ,' `. `---'o/ `.____,' -shimrod `.____,' >WALKING WITH PETER Okay, he ended up sinking like a rock, but for just a moment Peter did something amazing. He walked on water. As amazing as that feat was, perhaps just as remarkable is that he left the boat not in shallow water, not on a beautiful, calm lake day, but in the midst of a storm. Some argue that an act like that takes stupidity. But really it takes confidence. Not just a loud, self- aggrandizing, boastful kind of confidence, but the kind that truly believes a miracle is going to happen. For Peter, that belief was centered on Jesus. He had seen what He had done before and he trusted He would do it again in his life. How is your sense of trust? Are you ready to walk on water when the next storm comes? Heavenly Father, I do trust You and put myself in Your hands. I know You can do amazing things in my life! [Edited] Jonah 1:1,2 "Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah...saying, Arise, go to Nineveh...and cry against it for their wickedness is come up before me." As I was reading in our church bulletin the request for someone to give their testimony on the Christian radio station I felt the prompting of the Holy Spirit by the pounding of my heart in my chest! I have come to learn that the pounding in my heart is NOT the leading of the Holy Spirit, but my earthly body's response to the battle that takes place within upon His prompting beyond that which I feel comfortable with! This was later confirmed by my Pastor when he said "have I got an offer for you!" as he walked by, when I was later sharing with his wife on how God had blessed me in the past week. I was expressing how I wished I had the gift to speak in front of a group of people. I am not at all a public speaking person. After getting home I then e-mailed him writing that I was greatly considering his offer for it would be selfish of me not to share what the Lord has done in my life. Jonah 1:3 "But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord...." I was then greatly relieved shortly after when a dear Aunt (who also suffers from chronic muscle pain) called me asking if I wanted to go with her to a day seminar in Toronto on 'pain control' - the exact same date I was to give my testimony live on radio. I accepted her offer. Jonah 2:3&5 "For Thou hast cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about; all thy billows and the waves passed over me. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul:..." The relief was short lived. I then tried to explain why I needed to attend the seminar with my aunt in another e-mail to my pastor. His words jokingly "so there's a selfish motive to it", stayed with me, but it was not my pastor that I needed to convince - the issue was between me and God - alone. There was nothing wrong with wanting to attend the seminar BUT the real issue was 'I was trying to run' and the spiritual storm was raging within! Jonah 2:7&9 "When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord; and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;..." I passed by the piano and on it was a book of hymns with the cover torn off that belonged to my grandfather. The hymn in view was " There Shall be Showers of Blessing". I sang the chorus in my mind 'Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead'. In my heart I prayed "no mercy drops Lord, no showers Lord, just let it all POUR down on me! Let it POUR down on me!". SARS by then had broken out in the Toronto area and because of a seminar on pain control would be mostly registered to medical professionals we decided it would then not be a wise decision to attend. It was now a week before the testimony and in conversation with my pastor's wife again, and he in listening distance, I 'slipped' that I was not going to the seminar in Toronto. He informed me that no one else had yet volunteered. The pounding in my heart returned. Jonah 2:10 "And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land." Two days before the testimony, in the middle of the night, sleep evaded me. I then realized 'the call of the Lord' and humbled myself in prayer to do the testimony He had called me to do. As I then laid there in the night, heart full of joy that God was going to use me for the message He had given me I visioned ( in a dream?), I was drowning and as I looked up I saw large waterfalls. I then caught myself trying to focus my mind and immediately the mercy drops, the showers, my request for the "pouring down" came to mind. I felt like I was drowning in the spiritual blessings being poured down from heaven above! Jonah 3:1-3 "And the word of the Lord came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord....." I had an unusual calmness the day of the testimony until I arrived at the station where it was set up in town. It was coming closer to my time to be on and I suddenly had these thoughts "I'm going to faint, I have to get out of here!" Sensing my nervousness the hostess then brought 2 people to me; and said that they really wanted people to pray before going on the air and then asked if I would go with them to a room to pray before going on. As I shared with the two women how I ended up there, one of them said "with the story you just told us we believe there is someone out there who really needs to hear what you need to share". She then prayed that the childness in me would come out and then after explained "I sensed a little girl". Thinking about that later I thought I am a child - a child of the King, and even she could see that! The Holy Spirit lead my voice during my testimony as my heart was pounding so hard I'm sure one could see my chest moving. What a joy I had in my heart after in following through on the leading of the Spirit in everyday life and know within my heart I was used by God. What I learned from this experience: Never put God in a box. We sometimes give God the allowance to do certain things within what we think He is only capable of. Never put yourself in a smaller box. We sometimes only allow Him to do in us what we believe our limits are. With God there are no limits. God does not always keep us comfortable. In fact He will try us beyond that which we are comfortable with, to test our faithfulness to Him. Sometimes it is not always what we want to do but what we have to do for His names sake. Why do we run when we know we can't hide? Our repentance with God's forgiveness gives peace. Being a child of the King and with the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we have NOTHING to fear! So what about you? Are you having a "Jonah experience?" Are you trying to "run from God?" Just yield yourself to the Father above, And let Him hold you secure in His love. For life on earth grows more involved, With endless problems that can't be solved. But God only asks us to do our best, Then He will take over and do the rest. So when you are tired, discouraged and blue, There is always one door that is open to you. And that is the door to the House of Prayer, And you'll find God waiting to meet you there. And the House of Prayer is no further away, Than the quiet spot where you kneel to pray. For the heart is a temple when God is there, As we place ourselves in His loving care. And He hears every prayer and answers each one, when we pray in His name, Thy will be done. The burdens that seemed too heavy to bear, Are lifted away on the wings of a prayer. ~Helen Steiner Rice~ >Updated FUN STUFF URLS - Oh Yeah Shangy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/urls.html FUN URLS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -->ShangyFunList AD RATES: $20 will get your a message (of up to 40 words) out to all self-subscribed readers and $5 more will give you the same message also put up for all web site readers.
