I was amazed at the education I received just from listening to her share special accounts of her life. They often became treasured bedtime stories. My grandmother's name was Irene, and Pearl was one of her older sisters. Irene lived on a farm with her parents and siblings. There was a tall windmill that stood next to the machine shed near the barn. As a little girl, Irene watched the men climb to the top of the windmill to oil the wheel. One fall morning, Irene waved goodbye to her parents who had hitched old Jip to the buggy to attend an auction sale a few miles away. Her sister Pearl was in charge of the girls and decided to teach Irene how to tie her shoelaces that morning outside on the leaves. After a bit of practice, Irene decided to tie a ribbon on her rag doll. She put the doll on the bench in front of the machine shed and worked at tying the ribbon around the doll's neck. After accomplishing that task she looked around for something else to do. She spotted the old windmill and remembered watching the men climb it. That seemed like something she would enjoy doing. So with her rag doll under her arm she started to climb the small galvanized rungs which formed the ladder to reach the top. He legs were short and the rungs were far apart but she managed to get to the top. She placed her doll on the platform and somehow pulled herself up next to her. She could see for miles and pointed out neighboring farms and the many fall colors to her doll. Uncle John, and his wife Bertha, lived across the road. When Bertha saw Irene climbing she called her husband in from the barn to quickly rescue her. However, after talking it over, they decided that might frighten her to see Uncle John coming. So, they telephoned across the road and told Pearl where Irene was and how to get her down. Pearl came out to the windmill alone and told Irene to stay seated where she was. She said she would climb up and help her come down. The first thing she did when she reached the top was throw the rag doll down to the ground. Pearl was able to get Irene off the platform and her feet on the rung and slowly they came down together. When the girls were safely on the ground, Uncle John was there to praise Pearl for bringing Irene down safely. Irene didn't recall what he said to her, but she was afraid it wasn't good. And she got a scolding for disobeying and climbing the old windmill. Irene said the good thing that came from climbing was being able to see the countryside and the colorful leaves while sitting on the top of the windmill, and not falling. And she also learned to tie a bow that day! Years later, when we visited Grandma, we occasionally drove out to the country just to see the farmhouse where she was born and lived as a child. Quite often it was autumn, and the leaves were colorful and the apple trees continued to produce, so we'd pick a few and Grandma would tell us about living on the farm. But nobody would climb that windmill! It was still standing, but we just enjoyed looking at it, knowing it was part of Grandma's past. -- Diane Dean White ___________________________________________ You can see a review of Diane's new book Beach Walks here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1403366888/heart/ref=nosim Diane and her husband Stephen reside on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where she continues her love for writing. Driving home on the main highway in Middletown, New Jersey, she saw a terrible accident: a car was smashed like a pancake under a flat bed truck! No emergency people had arrived, but a small crowd had gathered. Nancy thought the driver must be dead, but decided to stop. She'd recently taken First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training for her Girl Scout Troop. She asked the crowd if anyone had medical training. Everyone replied, "No". She told them about her training, and they encouraged her to try to help. Nancy found the driver completely bent over with the car smashed around him, but breathing. His head was bleeding and he was moving his hands in a panicky way towards his chest. When Nancy told him she was there to help, and reached in to check his pulse. He kept thrashing around grabbing at his chest. His seat belt was choking him! Nancy yelled out that she needed scissors, a box cutter — anything to get the seat belt off. Someone handed her a box cutter and she managed to cut the seat belt off. The trapped man dropped forward and stopped clutching his chest, breathing more easily. A police officer arrived, and he and Nancy stayed with the man until emergency medical personnel arrived. Nancy left, knowing she'd done all she could and now the professionals were in charge. The man in the car, Dave, survived with only minor injuries. He called Nancy to thank her. He and his wife wanted to thank Nancy in person. Both hugged her the minute they saw her. It turned out Dave lived in the same town as Nancy; they had children in the same school. Dave asked Nancy to describe the accident, as he didn't remember much. As she talked, he remembered Nancy yelling about the seatbelt, and feeling better after it was off. He then told Nancy's children that the lesson to learn from their mom's actions is to always try to do the right thing, to stop to try to help someone in need. Nancy's five-year-old hugged Nancy's side as Dave spoke to them, then looked at her mom and said "My mom, my hero". Dave later told Nancy that the accident was so bad and that his pulse was so weak that they actually threw the sheet over him thinking he was dead. He said he felt the sheet and started to move and that's how they knew he was not dead. These days, many of us — medically trained or not — would rather drive past, thinking "There are plenty of people there already," or, "What if I get sued for just trying to help?" My friend Nancy, however, decided to stop and see what she could do — and probably saved a life. by Lori Coolahan --- ...Heart wrenching! About a century ago Stephen Grellat was led one day to go out to a heavily forested area of America to preach. It was a strong inward compulsion of the Holy Spirit. When he arrived at the loggers' camp, he found they had moved to another location, and their shanties were deserted. However, he was so sure he was sent by God that he went into an empty shanty and preached to the bare walls the sermon God had placed upon his heart. He then returned to his home, He could never understand why God would send him to preach to an empty shanty. Many years later, as he walked across a bridge, a man grasped his arm, "I found you at last," the man said. "I think you are mistaken," said Mr. Grellat. "No, Didn't you preach in an empty shanty in the woods years ago?" "Yes," Mr. Grellat admitted, "but no one was there." "I was the foreman in charge of the loggers," the stranger explained. "We had moved to a new location, before long I realized I'd left one of my tools behind. I returned to get it and heard a voice in one of the shanties, I peered through a crack between the logs and saw you. You never saw me, but I listened to the rest of the sermon, God touched my heart that day and I became so convicted of my sins, that after some time I purchased a Bible, repented of my sins, and became a Christian, then I began to win my men to Christ. Your sermon has led over a thousand people to Christ, and three of them have gone on to become missionaries!" - Wesley L Duewel -<>- !|| !|||| ,/|||| !|'''| `\ | )\ \ ejm / \ \ \ >A Prayer For Those We Love "Our Father Who art in heaven," hear this little prayer And reach across the miles today that stretch from here to there, So I may feel much closer to those I'm fondest of And they may know I think of them with thankfulness and love. He dressed oddly with ill fitting cloths. There were several fellows who thought it smart to make fun of him. One day one fellow noticed a small tear in his shirt and gave it a small rip. Another worker in the factory added his bit, and before long there was quite a ribbon dangling. Bill went on about his work and as he passed too near a moving belt the shirt strip was sucked into the machinery. In a split second the sleeve and Bill were in trouble. Alarms were sounded, switches pulled, and trouble was avoided. The foreman, however, aware of what had happened, summoned the men and related this story: "In my younger days I worked in a small factory. That's where I first met Mike Havoc. He was big and witty, was always making jokes, playing little pranks. Mike was a leader. Then there was Pete Lumas. He always went along with Mike. He was a follower. And then I remember Jake. He was a little older than the rest of us -- quiet, harmless, apart. He ate his lunch by himself. He wore the same patched trousers for three years straight. He never entered into the games we played at noon, wrestling, horse shoe and such. He was indifferent. "Jake was a natural target for practical jokes. He might find a live frog in his dinner pail, or a dead rodent in his hat. But he always took it in good humor. "Then one fall when things were slack, Mike took off a few days to go hunting. Pete went along, of course. And they promised all of us that if they got anything they'd bring us each a piece. So we were all quite excited when we heard that they'd returned and that Mike had got a really nice big buck. We heard more than that. Pete could never keep anything to himself, and it leaked out that they had a real whopper to play on Jake. Mike had cut up the critter and had made a nice package for each of us. And, for the laugh, for the joke of it, he had saved the ears, the tail, the hoofs -- it would be so funny when Jake unwrapped them. "Mike distributed his packages during the noon hour. We each got a nice piece, opened it, and thanked him. The biggest package of all he saved until last. It was for Jake. Pete was all but bursting; and Mike looked very smug. Like always, Jake sat by himself; he was on the far side of the big table. Mike pushed the package over to where he could reach it; and we all sat and waited. Jake was never one to say much. You might never know that he was around for all the talking he did. In three years he'd never said a hundred words. So we were all quite hypnotized with what happened next. "He took the package firmly in his grip and rose slowly to his feet. He smiled broadly at Mike -- and it was then we noticed that his eyes were glistening. His adam's apple bobbed up and down for a moment and then he got control of himself. "I knew you wouldn't forget me," he said gratefully; "I knew you'd come through! You're big and you're playful, but I knew all along that you had a good heart." He swallowed again, and then took in the rest of us. "I know I haven't seemed too chummy with you men; but I never meant to be rude. You see, I've got nine kids at home--and a wife that's been an invalid--bedfast now for four years. She ain't ever going to get any better. And sometimes when she's real bad off, I have to sit up all night to take care of her. And most of my wages have had to go for doctors and medicine. The kids do all they can to help out, but at times it's been hard to keep food in their mouths. Maybe you think it's funny that I go off by myself to eat my dinner. Well, I guess I've been a little ashamed, because I don't always have anything between my sandwich. Or like today -- maybe there's only a raw turnip in my pail. But I want you to know that this meat really means a lot to me. Maybe more than to anybody here because tonight my kids," he wiped the moisture from his eyes with the back of his hand, "...tonight my kids will have a really..." He tugged at the string. "We'd been watching Jake so intently we hadn't paid much notice to Mike and Pete. But we all noticed them now, because they both dove at once to try to grab the package. But they were too late. Jake had broken the wrapper and was already surveying his present. He examined each hoof, each ear, and then he held up the tail. It wiggled limply. It should have been so funny, but nobody laughed -- nobody at all. But the hardest part was when Jake looked up and tried to smile." This was where the foreman left the story and the men. He didn't need to say anymore; but it was gratifying to notice that as each man ate his lunch that day, he shared part with Bill Andrews and one fellow even offered him his shirt. --Author Unknown -<>- _____ _.'_____`._ .'.-' 12 `-.`. /,' 11 1 `.\ // 10 / 2 \\ ;; / :: || 9 ----O 3 || :: ;; \\ 8 4 // \`. 7 5 ,'/ '.`-.__6__.-'.' This figure of speech is beautifully illustrated in Isaiah, as an Orientalism in all of its significance. Isaiah 49: 15 -- Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Isaiah 49: 16 -- Behold, I have graven [tattooed] thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls [hands] are continually before me. Motherhood is an unforgettable human experience. A mother nursing her newborn child has indescribable feelings of attachment and tender affection for that child. However, God says that a woman can actually forget her baby -- which is most difficult and unlikely -- but God says that He will never forget one of His own. God states that His remembrance is beyond that of a mother for her child. God's memory is deeper than the memory of the most intimate human relationship. His memory of us is beyond human understanding. After this powerful statement in verse 15 of God's remembrance of us, in verse 16 of Isaiah 49, He uses a graphic figure of speech attributing to God the human characteristic of palms: "...I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands." In Eastern culture, the way of expressing great love and continual remembrance is by engraving, which we would call tattooing. This Oriental tradition involved tattooing the names of those you dearly love on your body -- while simply giving gifts to those you love slightly. Most of us are probably aware that the process of tattooing is very unpleasant. Most of the time, a person is tattooed on the arm but sometimes on the back or chest. NEVER do you see a person being tattooed on the palms of their hands. Why? Because the palms of the hands are much too sensitive and delicate. The pain of having tattoos engraved on the palms of the hands would be too much to bear. Yet God says, "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands . . .". God is also saying that it takes too long to look on the arm or the shoulders or across the chest, because that part of the body is almost always clothed with some type of garment. Therefore, God has tattooed us upon the PALMS OF HIS HANDS. Isn't that a beautiful illustration of God's love for His children? He can see us constantly. He loves us so much that, figuratively, He is willing to bear the excruciating pain of having us tattooed on the palms of His hands because we are dearly beloved of Him. Story Editor: by Robert B. Albright Joyce Schowalter Texas, USA I took my granddaughter Jessica shopping October 5, 2003. My wife, Bonnie, had just celebrated her sixteenth birthday for the 60th time three days earlier. When we returned home, my great-grandson told me his great-grandmother had fallen and was hurt bad. Apparently she'd had a mini-stroke, or something else caused her to fall as she came in from hanging out clothes to dry. We both have a problem with our brains moving faster than our bodies; if we move too fast we're apt to fall. I've practiced that more, so I don't get hurt. My hunting budding and his wife, David and Romona, both LPN's, were attending her on our back patio. Bonnie had broken both arms, the left at the wrist, the right at the shoulder. If I had been there, I could not have even gotten her up off the floor the way she was injured. There was no assurance she'd ever regain use of her right arm. Our friends accompanied us to the emergency room, where we were met by our granddaughter Colleen, a nurse's aid. David, Romona and Colleen stayed by my wife's side for three days, putting their lives on hold for Bonnie and me. I wasn't doing all that well myself. We'd been married 58 years; it was almost impossible to imagine such an alive, vibrant person being totally helpless. Bonnie rarely asked for help with anything. Now there she lay in a hospital bed, doing nothing for herself. She came through the double surgery beautifully. Now we had the long road to recovery; she couldn't use either arm. Colleen, David, Romona and I had to do everything for her. To me that was a privilege, not a chore. It seemed rather romantic to me to feed her. But Bonnie is a fighter. As fast as she could do anything, she was up doing it. At first she couldn't get up by herself. Soon, when I got back from taking my granddaughter Jessica to school, Bonnie was in the kitchen fixing her own tea. She ate left-handed. Then she was dressing herself. Even when she went to the hospital to have the internal brace removed from her right arm, she wasn't down long. Now she's driving and can do everything but reach the top shelf with her right arm. With the help of our friends and family, Bonnie has come back like a roaring freight train. She no longer goes out to hang up clothes, but that's the only concession she has made. Some comeback for a lady the doctors scheduled for hospital, rehabilitation, and nursing home because of her age and the severity of her injuries. Through all this, I realized again just how important my 16-year-old bride has been to me all these years. I so admire Bonnie's determined recovery. But without friends and family, neither of us would have made it. Because of Colleen, David, Romona, and others, we have an awful lot to be thankful for. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "Jesus gives us real eyes so we can realize where the real lies." - Michael McInerny __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >I'd Rather Have Jesus (Author Unknown) [Edited] The Apostle Paul wrote, "What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ." On a recent TV program, I saw George Beverly Shea, now 98, being interviewed by Bill Gaither. Since close to the beginning of the Billy Graham Crusades back in '47 (made "famous" in '49), Mr. Shea has been the BGC team soloist. Over the years I've attended several Graham Crusades in both Australia & the US. When in Chicago, a few other college students and I cheated a little. We joined the choir and we had great seats and could observe the evangelist close up. We were reasonably good singers back then anyhow. In every one of these crusades it was always inspiring to hear Bev Shea with his rich baritone voice sing his signature song which was, "I'd Rather Have Jesus." I didn't realize it until I heard Shea on the TV interview that he wrote the music of this well-known gospel song - the words of which are a devotion in & of themselves: "I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I'd rather be His than have riches untold; I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands, I'd rather be led by His nail pierced hand. Than to be a king of a vast domain Or be held in sin's dread sway, I'd rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today. I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause; I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause; I'd rather have Jesus than world-wide fame, I'd rather be true to His holy name. He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; He's sweeter than honey from out of the comb; He's all that my hungering spirit needs, I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead." --- ...AMEN! Trying to determine who owned it, he opened the suitcase, only to find the usual items you would expect to find in a man's luggage. There was only one clue as to who the owner was: a white box with a rubber band around it had a $20 gold piece between two layers of cotton inside. Around the gold piece was a band with the words, "Twenty years loyal and faithful service" on one side. On the other was printed "Presented to Otis Sampson by Northwestern States Portland Cement Company." No city was named. Bro. Rittenhouse mailed seventy-five letters before he received a reply from a Portland Cement Company, saying that several years before there had been a Mr. Otis Sampson in their employment, but that he had retired. They sent his address. Rittenhouse wrote Mr. Sampson to tell him that he had his suitcase. Mr. Sampson replied immediately, identifying the contents. He asked that Rittenhouse dispose of the suitcase and all contents, except the gold piece. Several times in the letter, Mr. Sampson referred to the gold piece as his "most precious possession." So Bro. Rittenhouse returned the gold piece, and used the opportunity to tell Mr. Sampson of his most precious possession - his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He didn't hear from Mr. Sampson until a year later, when he sent a Christmas box to the Rittenhouse family. Inside the box was a smaller white box with a rubber band around it and the $20 gold piece inside. A note was enclosed, which read: "Last Sunday my wife and I were baptized in a little church here in Colorado. We want you to have the gold piece to carry with you at all times. We are two old people; I'm 74 years old, my wife is 72. You are the first one who told us of Jesus Christ. Now He is our most precious possession." I hear the morning doves coo Another restful night is through, A glorious sunrise for me waits, Out near the rose garden gate. God has painted the skies and land With a gentle gesture of his hands And the autumn colors of the leaves Are a wonderland of delight to see. I take my seat in the old wicker chair And marvel at sights around me there, I tremble but not from the cold As God's majestic miracles unfold. The countryside like a kaleidoscope Reflects new colors and inspiring hope, I witness God painting from his palette And am awed by the pure majesty of it. Dark clouds part making room for hues Of sun struck gold, orange and blues And as sunbeams warm my smiling face I prayerfully thank God for his grace. I am reluctant to leave God's show But it's time to get ready to go As I rise to bid farewell to the dawn I pray for this earth we live on. ©Written by: Kenneth J.
