He told a story about how when he was a young boy he had been in church and was giving a handful of change he had at collection time. All the money in his pockets, but the person collecting the money for the church felt he was holding out so kept demanding more of him. The person kept asking in a most rude and demanding way, 'Is that ALL you have to give?'. He remembers it to this day and he is a man well over 40. That experience greatly offended him and caused him to believe that it was all about the money. He said he used to believe in God but not any more since then. I wanted to bring this up for two reasons. #1. If you are a person involved in a church or Christian activity, remember that your actions may very well reflect on how others perceive God, Jesus Christ, and/or the church. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' The bible puts it this way: 2 Cor.3: [2] Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: [3] Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. Apostle Paul wrote: 1 Cor.10a: [23] All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: Expedient: improper or immoral He is saying he can do what he wants but some things could make him, God, Jesus Christ or the church look bad so he won't do them. ___________ [___________] {=========} .-' '-. / \ /_________________\ | _ _ _ | ||\(_ |_)||_)||\ || ,.--. ,.--. ||~\_)| || \|| \|| // \ \ // \ \ |_________________| jgs \\ \ / \\ \ / | | `'--' `'--' '-----------------' #2: If you are a person like this man that had a bad experience with a Christian or a church member, I am sorry this happened to you. I get many emails, and everyday I sort through a host of funny pictures, ribald jokes and chain-letter forwards that I read, enjoy and summarily delete. But every once in a while I receive an email of significance -- a collection of words important enough to compel me to share it with my cyberspace amalgamation of family and friends. Which is exactly what happened Tuesday morning. A writer friend of mine sent me a most thought provoking email, which she entitled ironically enough, "Some thoughts for a happy day." The body of the composition professing the need to, "seize the moment and live life to the fullest". I read it, re-read it, and realized that the electronic transmission perfectly matched my own personal philosophy and further, provided a needed reminder that life is short so we need to play hard and enjoy. I summoned my lengthy email address book and began forwarding the worthy correspondence, in the process re-titling it, "Life as it should be lived." In one of those serendipitous life moments, as I hit send and put my group mailing on its merry way, my phone rang. It was my husband urging me to turn on the television. Within moments, my mind was reeling as I watched the incredulous turn of events play out in New York City and Washington D.C. Conflicting emotions of fear, anger, sorrow and compassion pulsed through my body, while the relentless journalism queries of who, what, when, where and why tortured my writer's brain. The last time I visited the Big Apple, I went to the World Trade Center. I sat at the bar in the rooftop Windows on the World Restaurant and felt accordingly as if I was truly on top of the world. It was a memorable evening that is forever captured in a group picture I have hanging on my office wall. And now in a matter of moments, that picture and the people within, are all that remain of that magical evening. Moving my glance from that celebratory picture to the devastating reality unfolding within my television's confining screen, I felt suddenly isolated. I wanted, and needed, to reach out and touch another human being to assure myself that no matter how shattering this incomprehensible event might be, my family and my friends were still alive and well, and that my sense of normalcy was going to survive. At about that same moment, email messages began filling my inbox -- all in reference to the same subject -- "Life as it should be lived". I inspected the senders' names and discovered many of the family and friends that I had just moments earlier connected with through my email forward. As I opened their letters a flood of grief and fear filled my computer screen, along with phrases that spoke of the value of family and friendship. At the same time, my phone began ringing in a series of related calls. My husband, my daughter, my sister-in law, my friends, fellow writers -- people from New York to California. Everyone responding to the same need to reach out and ensure the stability of our lives. When, at last, each of our sense and sensibilities had been soothed, we said our loving goodbyes, promising to talk more often and get together soon. I refocused on the horrific day's events as they continued to unfold and also returned to the email that had so innocently started my morning. I read it again, this time with a new focus and understanding, lingering over the final line that read, "If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call, what would you say, and why are you waiting?" For the countless numbers in those four airplanes, three office buildings and random city streets, that question is now irrelevant. For the rest of us, of greater import than the question, is our answer. -- Christina Abt ____________________________________________ Christina is a Heartwarmer Gem and resides in Western New York State. -<>- >WAVING FREE "O say can you see..." Everyone knows and remembers our national anthem. Have we forgotten some of the words over the years? Some of us Americans may have become a bit rusty until just recently. When was the last time we've seen so much patriotism? It certainly wasn't even this past Fourth of July. Independence Day had just become a day off, a day of leisure, another "holiday." So many of us have never seen a war that lasts more than a couple of weeks. Our senior Americans and Veterans remember them though. They are the neighbors that always remember to fly their flags on the right "holidays." My Mom is one of those seniors that has seen war first hand. She is American-Korean, and now is so very proud to call this her country, with a very deep sense of freedom. After watching the news coverage of the Attack On America for hours, Mom got up from her chair and went to the closet. There it was -- her American flag. It was folded neatly in the closet, ready to be displayed. Out the door she went with the flag in her hand, in a hurry. As the screen door was closing, it caught the stick the flag is attached to. Then, we heard the sound. Snap! The stick had broken in two. Her adult grandson, who was still glued to the television, heard the noise and got up to see what had happened. After looking at it, he told his grandma "we'll fix it." He went back into the house and came out with thumbtacks. He started to hang the flag with the thumbtacks, as Mom watched on. Suddenly, she said "No!" She had a very troubled look on her face. "We can't hang it like that", she said. "It has to wave free. My flag has to wave free in the wind -- it reminds me of my freedom. If we hang it with thumbtacks it will remind me of what these terrorists want -- to restrain my freedoms. I will not restrain my flag. Let it wave free, let it wave free in the wind"! Our wills remain strong and steadfast. Our spirits are soaring with determination. Americans are now asking themselves, "What can I do to help?" Millions have prayed and tens of thousands have responded to blood drives and have donated money to the Red Cross and other trusted organizations. That will continue. But what else can you do? The answer may be more simple than you realize. The answer is work harder -- harder than you've ever worked before. Here's why: As America and her allies unite, there is an important aspect of the terrorists' strategy to destabilize the civilized world that cannot be ignored. David Dolan, a former CBS correspondent in Israel, stated this week, "(The) enemies concluded in the 1970's that the great United States could eventually be brought to its knees by internal guerrilla-style terrorist strikes that would wreak emotional and economic havoc. "America's gigantic warships and far flung military bases would prove basically useless... Militants realized that the main target for attack should be lower Manhattan, since that would severely injure the massive U.S. economy -- the key element in America's power and prestige." The terrorists were successful in wreaking emotional havoc. However, the economic havoc our enemies have conspired so hard to achieve can be stopped! You see, our enemies used our own airplanes to destroy our lives and property, and now they want to use our own fears to destroy our economy. They've physically killed our countrymen, and now they want to economically kill the rest of us. Our free economic system is psychologically driven. When you're scared, you stop spending, when you stop spending, the economy comes to a standstill, and more workers are laid off, creating a downward spiral. The value of the American dollar is based on consumer confidence and productivity. That's why, more than ever, Americans need to insure that our economic base remains strong by doing two simple things -- work harder and spend money! The money you spend has to be earned by good old fashioned hard work. The same holds true for our government. The $40 billion that has been pledged by Congress to fight this terror does not grow on trees. While Congress does have a printing press in the basement, the fact remains, that the value of the money is only backed by the labor it takes to create it. If American consumers are not working, not buying products or services, and not paying taxes, then the $40 billion might as well be Monopoly money -- it is worthless. We cannot fight this new war with fake currency. If there were ever a time for Americans to roll up their sleeves and get to work, now is the time. You may not be in the military -- but you can do your part in assuring victory in this new war by being a confident and loyal supporter of our economic system by shopping with your hard earned dollars. There are no excuses. If you don't have a job, find one. If you can't get one, then do something constructive and fix up the house. If you're retired, volunteer to fix up your community. No matter what your circumstances, each of us can apply more effort to our occupations and volunteer activities. Even though our thoughts and prayers during this past week have taken us away from our jobs, this is not the time to curl up in a ball and pretend this is all going to go away. If you want to do your part in making America stronger, now is the time to open your wallet and buy American to put other Americans to work. The stock market will be re-opening. The terrorists will be watching the financial television networks, with great hopes that the opening bell will spell disaster. Nothing would make them rejoice more than to see the markets nose dive into economic chaos, forcing businesses to close. They are hoping that investors will run for the hills, causing an erosion in confidence of our capitalistic system. We've already seen it. Our airline companies are on the brink of collapse. What can you do? Buy American stocks! Make solid investments in our blue chip companies that employ hundreds of thousands of workers and who make up the backbone of our commercial prosperity. If you like smaller companies, then buy those too. Mortgage rates are very low and stocks have been undervalued for too long. You have a golden opportunity to personally participate in America's economic triumph and thwart the terrorists' plans. And buying U.S. Savings Bonds doesn't hurt either! It's time to invest in America! It's time to put our shoulders to the grindstone, work harder and better at our jobs, and unite our pocketbooks to show the terrorists that they will NEVER win on any front. -- Lee Simonson, Publisher http://www.heartwarmers.com =============================================================== >-->From Our Friend Bunni :) .==-. .-==. \()8`-._ `. .' _.-'8()/ (88" ::. \./ .:: "88) \_.'`-::::.(#).::::-'`._/ `._... .q(_)p. ..._.' And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? On the way to the raising of Jairus’ daughter, Jesus healed the woman with a hemorrhage. Jesus’ divine nature is seen in His ability to know healing power had gone out. This woman had exhausted her finances in seeking help form all her local physicians, and you all know the story, they had been unable to help her, to heal her….and in that crowd that day, she faught her way through the throng, to get to Jesus! She would have been pushed and jostled, she may have even skun her knees! Just trying to reach out to him and having touched the hem of his garment, Jesus said: Who touched my clothes? Jesus…..had the ability, the ability in His nature! To KNOW that that healing power had gone out! Praise God…he knew!….. Tis was then, the ‘anointing’ on this man Jesus…! So, illustrated here is that the anointing is a “physical” happening as well as an emotional one! Jesus “felt” a touch…..and the woman ‘felt’ the anointing come upon her as her faith made her whole….. This anointing is not unusual in an atmosphere created by the Holy Spirit’s presence! Not at all, it’s quite common and is easily recognised by those looking to give God all the Glory!, To God! be the glory! When we give the Glory to God for whatever reason it may be,God fills the atmosphere with His presence, and we feel “anointed”…..it’s a physical , tangible experience….I have heard of people, in the midst of an extremely anointed service, feeling a ‘compulsion’ to sit on the floor rather than on a chair, and immediately upon reaching the floor, the Spirit of God has ‘enveloped ‘ them!!! They have even laid on the floor and afterwards have told us they felt they couldn’t move! Their body weight held them down! And one Pastor I know of tells us that at the end of the night, two men went to help him up and they said he was ‘extremely’ heavy! Well let me tell you! This is the mighty weight of the Glory of God! This truly is being anointed by His Glory……. Some of us are never blessed quite enough to have this experience happen to us, but most of us at some time or other have ‘felt’ the power of Gods Holy anointing, we just don’t ‘accept it’ or even ‘recognize it as such..…. But what this anointing does, is bring out the prayers of the Holy Spirit which dwell within us! This also enables us at times, to ‘feel’ the renewed power and to feel the Grace of God on us and the anointing revives us in the Spirit of God in our lives…Halleluyah,,,,! Is God nothing? Because we can’t see Him is he nothing? NO! of course not! Like air we breathe into our bodies which we cant see yet gives us life, God we ‘breathe ‘ into our hearts and He gives us Spiritual life eternal! His Spirit ‘fuels’ our hearts…..this then, is a part of the anointing……..We need to make sure we are letting God enter into our very lives, not just in our thoughts and dreams, but into our souls! He is spiritual! But He loves in us….AND! it is HE Who fuels us…and He IS real….We need to allow ourselves to sometimes close our eyes, focus on Him, lift our hearts to Him and ‘feel’ Him within us….our bodies are His temple! He dwells within each one of us, we need to let the anointing come upon us and let it bring peace and Gods Grace into our very being…. Br Tony….. Father, for those who are reading this, I ask as they open their ears, they open their hearts….Lord, these are the words You gave me to share, and I am merely serving You… Let those who lack the understanding of the message here, speak unto You…Let them tell You! And Father, in your Graciousness,Hear them, forgive them and give them the ability to ‘feel’ you , rather than see You as just ‘words’…. for Lord YOU! Are the Word, you ARE the rhyme, and YOU ARE! The reason In Jesus Name…. Amen….. Br Tony --- ...Amen! She was very well liked, so the office shut down for her funeral and it was on the news and so on. On the day the workers came back to work, they found this poem in their e-mail that the deceased woman had sent on Friday before she left for home. If tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes All filled with tears for me; I wish so much you wouldn't cry The way you did today, While thinking of the many things, We didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me too; But when tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand, That an angel came and called my name, And took me by the hand, And said my place was ready, In heaven far above, And that I'd have to leave behind All those I dearly love. But as I turned to walk away, A tear fell from my eye, For all my life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die. I had so much to live for, So much left yet to do, It seemed almost impossible, That I was leaving you. I thought of all the yesterdays, The good ones and the bad, I thought of all that we shared, And all the fun we had. If I could relive yesterday, Just even for a while, I'd say good-bye and hug you And maybe see you smile. But then I fully realized, That this could never be, For emptiness and memories, Would take the place of me. And when I thought of worldly things I might miss some tomorrow, I thought of you, and when I did, My heart was filled with sorrow. But when I walked through heaven's gates, I felt so much at home. When God looked down and smiled at me, From His great golden throne, He said, "This is eternity, And all I've promised you. Today your life on earth is past, But here life starts anew. I promise no tomorrow, But today will always last, And since each day is the same way, There's no longing for the past. " So when tomorrow starts without me, Don't think we're far apart, For every time you think of me, I'm right there, in your heart. Send this to all those you care about... And back to the one who sent it because you never know what's going to happen tomorrow... Show them how you care, before it's too late... May God watch over you and your family now and always. Stunned by the malice that left multitudes dead, the nation turned to their clergy and to God as they struggled for understanding, filling churches and attending vigils, praying for U.S. leaders and the survivors of the attack. Terry Walsh, who works for a company that sells discount airline tickets, attended a Mass at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Dallas "to gain closeness to God and renew my strength. "I pray for God to stop people who commit acts of violence, hatred and evil," Walsh said. Archbishop Edward O'Brien, who leads the Catholic archdiocese for the military, was in an annual retreat in Washington with 50 armed services chaplains when word of the attacks reached them. They held a special Mass meant for times of war, then tried to return to their military posts. "We were all numb watching the TV," O'Brien said. "We prayed for peace in our hearts, for peace in our community, for an end to the evil that does such tremendous and unimaginable damage." At a Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, Cardinal Edward Egan told worshippers the Rev. Mychael Judge, a Fire Department chaplain, died in the attack. But Egan warned against "imaginings of retaliation." "Hate never begets peace," Egan said. "Justice does." The prayer line run by Unity, a nondenominational Christian movement based just outside of Kansas City, was swamped, spokesman Tom Taylor said. "Our prayer ministry normally gets several thousand callers a day, but we've been flooded," he said. "I don't honestly think we'll be able to answer all the calls that come in." The Rev. Paul Akin, pastor of a First United Methodist Church in Iowa, spent the afternoon hurriedly typing his sermon for a special prayer service. "I want to talk about that sense of brokenness and vulner- ability we feel and a sense of God's abandonment of us in the face of great tragedy," Akin said. "God's heart is the first to break and this is not God's vision for the world." President Bush asked the nation to pray for the families of the victims and quoted the Book of Psalms: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil for you are with me." A special service was held at Bethany Church in Greenwood, N.H., the church attended by Tom McGuinness, co-pilot of one of the planes that smashed into the World Trade Center. Bethany pastor Fred Cheney said when McGuinness' wife, Cheryl, got word of the crash, her first response was, '"My Tom is with Jesus."' One woman told the worshippers, "We felt evil today. Lord, we pray for your mercy tomorrow." Copyright © 2001, The Associated Press -<>- . | . \ | / `. \ ' / .' `. .-*""*-. .' So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, 'Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!'" One thing is for sure: Jesus was never politically correct. He always stood for what was right and for truth--never for that which was expedient, popular or expected. As Mark Batterson said, "He wasn't afraid of offending Pharisees; touching lepers; washing feet; defending prostitutes; or befriending tax collectors." In many ways, political correctness is destroying us! It allows a secular and often godless society to squeeze us into its mold. Besides "political correctness" is an oxymoron if ever there was one. There's nothing correct about it. It's really political expediency in order to get one's own way, to get votes, to be a crowd pleaser, to avoid criticism, or for whatever other manipulative false motive. ___ %. __ __/__/I__ ______% %%' / __/_[___]/_/I--. /%%%% / / I_/=/I__I/ /I // )( / /____/=/ /_____// // / I___/=/ /_____I/ // /______/=/ /_________// I_____/=/ /_________I/MJP /=/_/ Furthermore, if we in the West don't wake up and smell the "gunpowder" of radical Islam which is out to destroy us, our insane political correctness WILL destroy us. Had Jesus been politically correct, we would still be lost in our sins without hope and without eternal life. You may recall how William Wilberforce fought the battle for twenty years to end the slave trade in Great Britain. He was hated. He was threatened. He was despised. He was ridiculed, but he knew what was right and he fought for this and for the truth until he won and saw the then wretched slave trade in England stopped. Wilberforce was not politically correct either. As a result he helped change his world. We who claim to be believers in God and followers of Jesus Christ also need to abandon this political correct nonsense that is an integral part of today's post modern society for whom "tolerance, not truth, is absolute." Only truth is eternal. In the long run it will win. Always. Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please deliver me from the sin of being politically correct for all the wrong motives. Give me the courage and help me always in all ways to stand for and battle for truth and that which is right in your eyes. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus' name, amen." 1. Like millions of other New Yorkers, our family was glued to our television set. We were lucky enough to be spared direct loss. However, one of our friends is married to a NYC firefighter so we worried about him. By Wednesday we found out he was all right, but many of his fellow firefighters never made it out of the World Trade Towers. When Saturday morning dawned it was time for our children to get back to their soccer games. I wasn't able to go because I was attending a baby shower. When I came downstairs, ready to leave, my 11-year-old daughter announced that she was going to ask for donations to support the Red Cross during her sister's game. She had it all planned. She had a plastic bag with the Red Cross logo on it. She took a table and chairs, and a friend to help. I thought she'd collect a few dollars which we could donate. When I arrived home, I was stunned to see that she had collected $218.62. This inspired both her and her sister. Sunday morning, they collected another $17.00 from people on their way to church. Sunday afternoon, it was my 7-year-old daughter's turn to try her hand collecting donations. At her sister's soccer game, she was able to collect another $78.00. Finally, on Monday the girls set up a lemonade stand, offering free lemonade in exchange for a donation. Another $47.00 for the pot. When all was said and done, they collected $363, which my company will match. Is it a huge sum of money? No -- but my children were not finished. I work near the firehouse of Ladder Company 24, where Father Mychal was the Chaplain. Fr. Mychal lost his life administering last rites to a dying firefighter on September 11. Our church had special prayers for this wonderful man, thus giving his name more meaning to my girls when I explained where his firehouse was. We wanted to do something for his brave partners. We spent Sunday baking cookies, muffins, coffee cakes and brownies to deliver to New York's finest. A simple gesture, but one where my kids could say they helped real people. When I delivered them, I was humbled by the grace with which the firefighters accepted our offering. Across America, our children are mobilizing to make a difference. Biking through my town, I saw kids organizing lemonade stands, bake sales, and car washes. No doubt they held other fundraisers that I didn't see. I have never been more proud of my children than I was that weekend. I have no doubt that other parents felt the same way. The hope my children inspired in me is worth millions. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From SermondFodder: __________________________ /| Art Gallery | / | ____ ____ ____ | / | |o | | , | | _ | | / | | O | |. | |(@) | | / | |_,k,| |_,-,| |\|p | | / /| | | h | | ,; | | | | | / / | | |_z__| |____| |____| | / /@;| | z z | / |Y | z|_{)_______________________| / | / /z /H / /| |/ /z Y / / | / {) d / / %| / /| | |&"| / Y | | / / d | |/ / | / | / | / | / | / |/ David Riley >Without Recourse Doing some research on my family tree I found that I was related to President Calvin Coolidge. Coolidge was known for having a wry sense of humor. Doing some additional research I ran across an interesting story. A worker in the reference department of the Library of Congress received a call asking the meaning of the phrase "without recourse." He consulted a legal dictionary and furnished this definition, "Said of a signer of a document when he takes no responsibility for the face of the document." "Thank you," said the voice at the other end of the wire. "I have an autographed photograph of Coolidge. [or a deer head] In fact, it is not a even a weapon—not a physical weapon, anyway. I experienced the power of a R.A.K. this past week during a routine part of my day. I believe the combination of many of them would have an awesome impact on our world. Let me show you what I mean . . . . I was driving to my office on a Monday morning and just happened to have my radio tuned to a station in Clarksville, TN. It is normal for the hosts to run a trivia contest at about that time of morning. On that particular morning, the contest was between a man and a woman. I cannot remember the man's name, but I will call him "Roger." The woman's name was Melissa. Melissa just happened to mention during the segment that she had a two-week-old baby. The contest began with, of all things, a question about the average weight of a newborn baby. Of course, Melissa answered that question well and received several points because of it. Roger laughingly commented on how that question "just happened to come up." The next question was given and it was about the average cost of a fast food meal. Roger was more attuned to this type of question and quickly suggested "$5.00." That was the number one answer and pushed Roger well ahead of Melissa. Then Roger did a completely unexpected thing. He passed and told the hosts that he was going to do something probably no one else had ever done: He was going to forfeit the game to Melissa because he thought she, as a new mother, could use the prize (a free massage from a local spa). The hosts (a man and a woman), were stunned. They went on and on about how nice Roger was and about how his kind act was such a good thing. They decided, on the spur of the moment, to give "Roger" a gift certificate to a local restaurant. A positive atmosphere prevailed on the set following the contest. That act of kindness stayed with me all day—and I was seventy miles away. You have probably guessed the meaning of R.A.K. by now: a "random act of kindness." You probably also heard that terminology a few years ago when people were trying to counter the random acts of violence (road rage, for example) in our world. I think, however, it is time to begin weaving "R.A.K.'s" into the fabric of our lives. Those acts will enrich our lives as well as the lives of others around us. (Lance Cordle) KneEmail: "Whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness, and honor" (Prov. 21:21, ESV). ================================================================= >-->From Kidwarmers: THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY ('. \ \ Y | ,--. ;_ (,7 | | |_ /___\| | LJ :---:| |/__\ |===|\~/---: '---'/T\===| .', \--' / ; .; ;.-'-". \ snd "..'
