That young man is going to grow up and be somebody someday," said the schoolmarm. "He's quite a pistol!" Everyone in the small midwestern town could agree on one thing -- if you were looking to place a bet on who was going to be running the town, or a whole lot more in the future, the money was on Silas Harper. Though only a boy of 12, Silas exhibited all the characteristics that ingratiated his elders. It was hard not to like the kid -- cheerful, enthusiastic, diligent, helpful -- your typical boy scout type. Even when the train rolled into town with its billowing steam engine, Silas was there to greet the visitors and help them with their baggage. Sometimes they'd toss him a penny tip. But Silas also wondered where those tracks went. He heard stories and was able to read about far off places. Someday, he'd be able to get on that train and find out what it was like. "I sure would like to see where that goes," he told his parents. His family eked out a meager existence on a less than desirable piece of property on the outskirts of town. The rocky outcrops on the small Arkansas farm did not bode well for wheat or corn, so the Harpers did what they could with some livestock and doing odd jobs for the other families in town. Silas, as always, did more than his share to help with the chores. As he grew into adulthood, his ambitions and charm only grew. He had a natural gift for business and local folks even sought his advice. Some thought he would become a banker or lawyer. But Silas had bigger dreams than that. "My dad's farm is a nice place, but what would I do with that property?" he asked friends. He didn't get any arguments. The farm was hardly workable and for all intents and purposes was "good for nuttin." By the time he was 19, Silas had saved enough money to board the train and head west to seek his fame and fortune. He set up an import business in San Francisco and was not only well received by the business community there, but achieved success in a relatively short time. Colleagues liked and trusted him. It seemed that luck was on his side, until several years later when he stood on the street and cried while he watched a fire destroy his business. Everything he had worked for had gone up in smoke. But nothing and no one would ever stand in his way. "I must say that I thought that was the worst day of my life," Silas later recalled, "but that wasn't the only setback I experienced as destiny handed me my fate." Indeed, Silas spent the next forty years spanning the globe, living in exotic places, and putting deals together. However, he was overtaken with illness, dishonest business partners, and other misfortunes. He wanted to finally settle in New York City, but even then, circumstances caused him to lose whatever he had in a severe economic downturn. "I couldn't believe how one person could stumble upon such misfortune," he said, describing himself. He sought peace and contentment by eventually finding his way back home. The old homestead had been boarded up for many years, and the farmhouse was in desperate need of repair. But Silas enjoyed the company of his old friends, and he invested what he had to fix the place up. Silas was an old man now, and whatever time he had left, he'd spend playing checkers and weaving spell binding tales of his adventures overseas. The activities would help stave off his bitterness of not living the luxurious life he had always planned on. He had played by the rules, looked out for his fellow man, and yet, was left with nothing. One spring day, Silas was relaxing in his rocking chair on the back porch of the old farmhouse. He enjoyed reading the paper and his trusty pipe was always a companion. It was a nice day. But something was about to happen that would make it very special. A glint of sunlight had caught his eye. It caused him to look up and search the rocky field. "I couldn't figure out where that gleam of light had come from," he said. "I thought some of the local children were fooling me with a reflection from a mirror." But it happened again and Silas caught the spot in the field where the ray of light had come from. He got up, walked over to the spot, knelt down, and saw something. "At that point," he said, "I tried to look more closely. My eyesight hadn't been the best, so I got my spectacles out. I can't say I know one rock from another, but I've been around enough to think I knew what I was looking at." Within a week, geologists from a state university had confirmed his find. Silas was looking at a diamond. But that's not all. They had surveyed his property and discovered the place was littered with diamonds -- so many in fact, that Silas was now sitting on the largest diamond field in North America. That worthless piece of rock infested earth -- the same one that Silas had forsaken decades before for opportunity in distant lands -- turned out to be one of the most valuable pieces of real estate anywhere. He was now sitting on acres of diamonds. If Silas was bitter before, he could only kick himself now. "If I had only known," he told friends, "that my riches were not only right in front of me, but given to me early, I would have lived my life very differently." As a rich celebrity, Silas spent the remaining years of his life going to schools and telling students the lessons he learned. They listened intently. "Please hear me," he pleaded. "Don't think for a minute that what you are looking for is down that track, or over the next hill. Don't be fooled into thinking that someone else has what you want. Yes, strive for what you seek. Work hard and honestly for what you want. But don't blind yourself to what you can find in front of you right now! "Do you seek contentment and happiness? Do you seek peace of mind? Do you seek prosperity? It really doesn't matter what you want, because you are all sitting on your own acres of diamonds. It's all there. You already have the key to unlock the treasures you own. "It took me a lifetime to discover the secret I am telling you now. Please don't misunderstand. I'm not telling you to scratch the dirt. I'm not telling you to go to the trouble of running outside with a shovel. No, it's much easier than that. You don't even have to get your hands dirty! "The trick to finding your treasure involves opening your eyes, and opening your heart. Look in front of you, and within you. Some of you are so blind to the obvious, you can't see it. Some of you are too busy to notice. And some of you are afraid to look because you have grown comfortable struggling with troubles you've come to expect. "Believe me when I tell you that you have been given everything you need. You already own the gifts you seek. They were given to you a long time ago. Don't spend your lifetime seeking your happiness, when in reality, you already have the means to it. "The amazing part about this secret is that no one can steal it from you. The gifts you've been given -- including your very own acres of diamonds -- are yours to keep and share as you see fit. Everyone is good at something, and you'll come to find out that the more you share your treasures, the shinier they get, and the more valuable they become. In turn, you become a richer and happier person." Yes, the diamonds had changed his life, and fortunately, Silas used those diamonds to enrich the lives of others. "Sometimes we may treat each other like we are diamonds in the rough," he said, "but in reality, we can become rich beyond imagination when we discover that we are all sparkling jewels in the eyes of God, and our fellow man." -- Lee Simonson Publisher, Heartwarmers.com ___________________________________________ This was inspired by Russell Conwell's famous, and lengthier, Acres of Diamonds story. They react as did the little girl who saw a mule looking at her over the fence. She had never seen a mule before and she said to it, "I don't know what you are but you must be a Christian -- you look just like Grandpa." To many of us, "holy" people are those who look as if they had been steeped in vinegar or soaked in embalming fluid. But the Scriptures speak of "the beauty of holiness" (Psalm 29:2 KJV). True holiness is therefore something splendidly attractive. The original root from which the word holy is derived is the same root from which a very attractive English word also comes. That word is "wholeness." Holiness, therefore, means wholeness, being complete. If you read "wholeness" in place of "holiness" everywhere you find it in the Bible, you will be much closer to what the writers originally meant. We all know what wholeness is. It is to have together all the parts which were intended to be there and to have them function as they were intended to function. Our modern expression "getting it all together" is very close to the root meaning of holiness. God is in the business of making those crooked paths in our lives straight. Our job is to surrender to Him. This takes a lot of time and patience because we don't want to give up those crooked paths so easily but if we do, we will have complete peace. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, 'Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!'" One thing is for sure: Jesus was never politically correct. He always stood for what was right and for truth--never for that which was expedient, popular or expected. As Mark Batterson said, "He wasn't afraid of offending Pharisees; touching lepers; washing feet; defending prostitutes; or befriending tax collectors." In many ways, political correctness is destroying us! It allows a secular and often godless society to squeeze us into its mold. Besides "political correctness" is an oxymoron if ever there was one. There's nothing correct about it. It's really political expediency in order to get one's own way, to get votes, to be a crowd pleaser, to avoid criticism, or for whatever other manipulative false motive. Furthermore, if we in the West don't wake up and smell the "gunpowder" of radical Islam which is out to destroy us, our insane political correctness WILL destroy us. Had Jesus been politically correct, we would still be lost in our sins without hope and without eternal life. You may recall how William Wilberforce fought the battle for twenty years to end the slave trade in Great Britain. He was hated. He was threatened. He was despised. He was ridiculed, but he knew what was right and he fought for this and for the truth until he won and saw the then wretched slave trade in England stopped. Wilberforce was not politically correct either. As a result he helped change his world. We who claim to be believers in God and followers of Jesus Christ also need to abandon this political correct nonsense that is an integral part of today's post modern society for whom "tolerance, not truth, is absolute." Only truth is eternal. In the long run it will win. Always. Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please deliver me from the sin of being politically correct for all the wrong motives. Give me the courage and help me always in all ways to stand for and battle for truth and that which is right in your eyes. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully in Jesus Christ's name, amen." 1 John 2:14-17 (KJV). -<>- >The Lift .. ____ ____ . | / + \ || || /+ . \ . | |o x.| =**= _ =**= | o x| . | |____| || _( )_ || |____| . | || /_____\ || . | ______________//| |/__________________ . |_______^________/ | + | /____^_____ . . _U_ / |___| // _U_ . | /_______________________________________// | . /|\ |______________________________________|/ /|\ Worship: Offering Yourself to God (By Rick Warren)[Edited] Offering yourself to God is what worship is all about. This act of personal surrender is called many things: consecration, making Jesus Lord, taking up your cross, dying to self, yielding to the Spirit. What matters is that you do it, not what you call it. God wants your life, all of it - 95 percent is not enough. Our total surrender to God is blocked by several things, including: * Our ignorance of God - not knowing what he's really like; * Our sinful nature - the desire to be God ourselves; and * Our misunderstanding of surrender and the trust that it requires. Can We Trust God? Trust is an essential ingredient to surrender. We won't surrender to God unless we trust him, but we can't trust him until we know him better. Fear keeps us from surrendering, but love casts out all fear. The more you realize how much God loves you, the easier surrender becomes. How do I know God loves me? He gives us many evidences: * God says he loves you (Psalm 145:9); * You're never out of his sight (Psalm 139:3); * He cares about every detail of your life (Matthew 10:30); * He gave you the capacity to enjoy all kinds of pleasure (1 Timothy 6:17b); * He has good plans for your life (Jeremiah 29:11); * He forgives you (Psalm 86:5); * He's patient with you (Psalm 145:8); * He sacrificed his only begotten Son for you (Romans 5:8). God loves you infinitely more than you can imagine. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1,2). If you want to know how much you matter to Jesus look at him with his arms outstretched on the cross saying, "I love you this much! I'd rather die than live without you." God is not a cruel slave driver or a bully who uses brute force to coerce us into submission. He doesn't try to break our will, but woos us to himself, so that we might offer it freely to him. God is a lover and a liberator, and surrendering brings freedom, not bondage. When we completely surrender ourselves to God through Jesus, we discover that he is not a tyrant but a savior; not a boss, but a brother; not a dictator, but a friend. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Our Gifts And Callings http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/giftscallings.html God's Royal And Holy Priests http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/royalpriests.html Look Who's Talking Now! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/talking.html Texas Rules Of Ettiquette http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/texas.html Rarely Seen Babies! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/babyanimals.html Artistic Coffee Mugs http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/coffeemugs.html Chalk Art 7 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/chalkart7.html Amazing Photos 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/amazingphotos3.html Best Buddies http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/bestbuds.html Blast From The Past http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/blastfrompast.htm -<>- >From Our Friend Melody :) WWII Vet Turns 105 http://www.godfruits.com/5395/wwii-vet-105.php?Ref=9 Compilation of the Best Funny Baptisms http://tinyurl.com/lw5dkkr Praise The Lord! http://tinyurl.com/lgw2jrl --- ...Sweet! [] | (((()) ..|____|_|_|____|..................................)(... ldb >An Unexpected Reward Story Editor: by Debbie Decker Joyce Schowalter California, USA My son attends Douglass Junior High School in Woodland, California. It's a big school -- more than 1,200 kids in seventh through ninth grades. The school population is incredibly diverse, with many languages, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic levels represented. The dress and behavior codes are strict and expectations are high, which results in fewer problems at school. My son feels safe at school and seems to enjoy it. One morning in January, 2002, I received a call from Ms. Azevedo, the vice principal at Douglass. A call from Ms. Azevedo strikes fear and terror into the heart of even the most cynical and jaded junior high school parent. Ms. Azevedo is a lovely, charming woman. Nevertheless, she is regarded with a mixture of fear and dread because of her reputation as a strict disciplinarian with a "no baloney" attitude. My son was in the seventh grade. Because he is a good kid, I immediately thought she had called because of a disease outbreak or medical crisis. I worried that he had been injured, run over, taken sick or turned blue -- in the way only a Mom's mind can spin. Then Ms. Azevedo said that Tyler had been referred to her office, and my mind spiraled off to horrifying behavior problems. I presumed that he had beaten up someone, gone berserk in class, stuffed paper towels in the toilets, something involving explosives... who knows! But none of these issues was the subject of Ms. Azevedo's call. Tyler had received a "Positive Referral" from Ms. Ewing, his homeroom teacher. Because of his respectful attitude, helpfulness, politeness and all-around being a great kid, he'd been referred to the vice principal. Ms. Azevedo had taken time out of her busy day to call me and tell me about this wonderful recognition. Mr. Callahan, the school principal, started the Positive Referral program to make sure parents know about the great stuff their kids do. He aims to let us know when our kids are doing well, and not just academically. "Positive Referrals" also let students know that both good behavior and good attitudes are valued. Each kid also receives a free cookie and is entered in a monthly drawing for a free off-site lunch. Parents are notified of their children's accomplishments by phone. What a great way to recognize good kids and encourage parents! This call made my day, because it really is hard work, as a parent, to raise a child who behaves well. It's so hard, in fact, that some days you almost want to give up and let your children run roughshod over your rules. Thank you all: Mr. Callahan, Ms. Azevedo, and Ms. Ewing, for being a positive voice in today's world. And thank you for helping me to realize that a parent's hard work really is worth it. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: >FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY o oo o o o ___o o o /`._;o o | / o ;_ | `-' jg Michael brought home a homework assignment from first grade. While we’re renewed through fervent prayer Our love and substance we will share. We’ll lift and supplement all those That struggle in a life of woes. And as we implement God’s plan To love and serve our fellow man We’ll gain a spot in heavens place But knowing that it’s through his grace. Then one day when our time has come To go home to the risen Son Who sacrificed all that he was To make a place for all of us. I pray we all have served him well And saved we’ll be from times we fell Enfolded in his arms he’ll say I stood beside you all the way. © James O'Brien >Updated FUN STUFF URLS - Oh Yeah Shangy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/urls.html FUN URLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -->FULL LENGTH - FREE On line AUDIO MP3 Christian Foundational Class http://www.truthortradition.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=61 NEW LIFE IN CHRIST! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -->This is for all you who love food and DARE to make it at home Yep.
