We usually saved this special outing for the Saturday before Halloween. If memory serves me correctly, each year the weather cooperated with sunny skies and fairly warm temperatures. Some years the crisp, cool air of autumn gave us reason to wrap sweaters around our waists, just in case. It was quite a long ride out to the pumpkin patch. The girls would get anxious repeating a familiar phrase, "Are we there yet?" Outside the city and a ways past the suburbs we'd drive until we were out in the country and there we'd find the spectacular farm all decorated for the harvest season. Huge scarecrows could be seen everywhere, greeting young and old alike. A barn converted into a craft store for the occasion had all you could want for the fall festivities. Caramel apples covered in peanuts to sink your teeth into, cider to sip, and popcorn balls to crunch. No trip to the pumpkin patch would be complete without a good old fashioned hay ride. The farmer's tractor pulled the long, wooden seated vehicle out into the middle of the patch as the children sang songs. The ride was bumpy, the songs were severely off key, but the giggle of happy children always made for a joyful ride. When we reached our destination the kids were instructed to only pick a pumpkin they were able to carry. Of course it never failed -- Bill and I would each be lugging an oversized Jack-O-Lantern back to where the tractor waited. I fondly remember all the fun on a far away piece of farmland where the weather signaled the end of summer and the beginning of frost filled nights. The other day Bill and I took a ride that found us passing the same place we picked pumpkins with the kids. Sadly, we witnessed its demise with no signs of the traditional Halloween happenings. Apparently the farmland has been gone for a long time. It is now a sub-division with clusters of homes scattered all around the area. The only trace of hay, apple cider and friendly faced scarecrows to welcome us are in the memories of two aging parents and their now grown daughters. These days we purchase our pumpkins at the local grocery store. Lately we have resorted to painting on smiling faces instead of carving them. They are quite a bit smaller than the gargantuan gourds our children used to choose. Autumn is a special time of caring and sharing. It's a time to be thankful for the harvest that we reap, both nutritional and spiritual. In the harvest of our lives I am grateful for the bounty of love and memories that are mine to forever cherish. -- Kathy Whirity ___________________________________________ Kathy lives in Chicago where she shares her life and love with her husband of 29 years, Bill, their two daughters, Jaime and Katie, and two rambunctious retrievers, Holly and Hannah. Suddenly one of the elephants veered from the line and marched into a church. [In Milan, church doors are large, and in the summer are often wide open.] This visitor wandered up the center aisle, trumpeted a bit, swung her trunk around and headed back to the parade. Unfortunately, many humans seem to imitate this pious pachyderm. On a Sunday morning we lurch into church, make a few noises, observe the congregation, then step out to resume our place in the parade. The great drama of worship is played out, but it is lost on us. These changes need to be completed in order that I may fulfill My promises to you to grant you peace, joy and happiness in this life. I apologize for any inconvenience, but after all that I am doing, this seems very little to ask of you. Please, follow these 10 guidelines: 1. QUIT WORRYING: Life has dealt you a blow and all you do is sit and worry. Have you forgotten that I am here to take all your burdens and carry them for you? Or do you just enjoy fretting over every little thing that comes your way? Give it to me. 2. PUT IT ON THE LIST: Something needs done or taken care of that is overwhelming to you? Put it on the list. No, not YOUR list. Put it on MY to-do-list. Let ME be the one to take care of the problem. I can't help you until you turn it over to Me. And although My to-do-list is long, I am after all ... God. Together we can get it done. I can take care of anything you put into My hands. In fact, if the truth were ever really known, I take care of a lot of things for you that you never even realize. 3. TRUST ME: Once you've given your burdens to Me, quit trying to take them back. Trust in Me. Have the faith that I will take care of all your needs, your problems and your trials. Overwhelming Problems with the kids? Put them on My list. Overwhelming Problem with finances? Put it on My list. Overwhelming Problems with your emotional roller coaster? For My sake, put it on My list. I want to help you. All you have to do is ask. 4. LEAVE IT ALONE: Don't wake up one morning and say, "Well, I'm feeling much stronger now, I think I can handle it from here." Why do you think you are feeling stronger now? It's simple You gave Me your burdens and I'm taking care of them. I also renew your strength and cover you in my peace. Don't you know that if I give you these problems back, you will be right back where you started? Leave them with Me and forget about them. Just let Me do my job. 5. TALK TO ME: I want you to forget a lot of things. Forget what was making you crazy. Forget the worry and the fretting because you know I'm in control. But there's one thing I pray you never forget. Please, don't forget to talk to Me - OFTEN! I love YOU! I want to hear your voice. I want you to include Me in on the things going on in your life. I want to hear you talk about your friends and family. Prayer is simply you having a conversation with Me. I want to be your dearest friend. 6. HAVE FAITH: I see a lot of things from up here that you can't see from where you are. Have faith in Me that I know what I'm doing. Trust Me; you wouldn't want the view from My eyes. I will continue to care for you, watch over you, and meet your needs. You only have to trust Me. Although I have a much bigger task than you, it seems as if you have so much trouble just doing your simple part. How hard can trust be? 7. SHARE: You were taught to share when you were only two years old. When did you forget? That rule still applies. Share with those who are less fortunate than you. Share your joy with those who need encouragement. Share your laughter with those who haven't heard any in such a long time. Share your tears with those who have forgotten how to cry. Share your faith with those who have none. 8. BE PATIENT: I managed to fix it so in just one lifetime you could have so many diverse experiences. You grow from a child to an adult, have children, change jobs many times, learn many trades, travel to so many places, meet thousands of people, and experience so much. How can you be so impatient then when it takes Me a little longer than you expect to handle something on My to-do-list? Trust in My timing, for My timing is perfect. Just because I created the entire universe in only six days, everyone thinks I should always rush, rush, rush. 9. BE KIND: Be kind to others, for I love them just as much as I love you. They may not dress like you, or talk like you, or live the same way you do, but I still love you all. Please try to get along, for My sake. I created each of you different in some way. It would be too boring if you were all identical. Please, know I love each of your differences. 10. LOVE YOURSELF: As much as I love you, how can you not love yourself? You were created by me for one reason only -- to be loved, and to love in return. I am a God of Love. Love Me. Love your neighbors. But also love yourself. It makes My heart ache when I see you so angry with yourself when things go wrong. You are very precious to me. Don't ever forget...... Touch someone with your love. Rather than focus upon the thorns of life, smell the roses and count your blessings -<>- __ _..-''--'----_. ,''.-''| .---/ _`-._ ,' \ \ ;| | ,/ / `-._`-. ,' ,',\ \( | |// /,-._ / / ;.`. `,\ \`| |/ / | )/ / / /`_`.\_\ \| /_.-.'-''/ / / /_|_:.`. \ |;'`..') / / `-._`-._`.`.;`.\ ,' / / `-._`.`/ ,'-._/ / : `-/ \`-.._/ | : ;._ ( : | \ ` \ \ \ | : : ; | / ; ,' / / / / / SSt >Play Your Cards "How do you like the hand you've been dealt? You will "miss" it by sleeping. Researchers tell us that the average person sleeps about one-third of each year - or one-third of a lifetime. But the experts also tell us that something important happens when we sleep - we dream. Apparently all people dream, even if they don't remember dreaming. And over the next twelve months, most of us will have about a thousand dreams. Dreaming is important. But equally important are those "dreams" we have for our lives - those plans, hopes and goals we will formulate concerning our relationships, our spiritual growth, self-improvement, our physical health and our world. The dreams, or wishes, we have for our lives are just as necessary as dreaming while we sleep. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale used to tell of a 79-year-young woman who was struck by a hit-and-run driver. She was expected to die from her injuries. When he visited, he found her wrapped in plaster from her hips to her heels. He glanced around the room, cluttered with mementos of a lifetime. He spotted a paisley shawl, a child's drawing of a horse (lavender) and shelves of much loved, much-thumbed books. One shelf was a row of brand new books - the only new items in the room. They looked as if they had never been touched. Dr. Peale asked her if she cared for poetry. Her answer was a beautiful tribute to hope and dreams: "I love poetry, but I haven't read those yet." Her face lit up. "I'm saving them for my old age." She did, too. She lived to read those books many times. When she finally died at 91, she was planning a trip to Europe. Louis Driscoll put it like this: "In your heart keep one still secret spot where dreams may go, and sheltered so, may thrive and grow." She kept her dreams alive. And they kept her alive. It was Saturday and we were going to have a great time. My divorced mother, two younger brothers and I were on our way to the park at the other end of the small Jersey town we lived in. We had our football and makeshift goal posts in the back of the station wagon and our teams already chosen: us against our mother. (Don't worry, it was only touch football.) On the way we approached a small bar where an agitated crowd had formed outside. Suddenly there was a terrible tension in the air. "Uh, oh," one of my brothers said. "Shhh," my mother told him. I got an uneasy feeling in the gut of my stomach. I'd always had a certain uneasiness about crowds. Fear actually. When I was only about five, we were living in North Manhattan. I had witnessed a crowd yelling for a suicidal man atop an apartment building to jump. It left me with a bad impression of what decent, normal people are capable of when in the crowd mentality. I wanted out of there and shouted to my mother to speed up. Instead, she slowed! She pulled to the curb on the opposite side of the street. We were a few dozen feet from six or seven people cheering on a drunken fight. It was definitly crowd mentality, all right -- the same whether it was in a city or a small town. To our horror our mother got out, locking us boys in. "Stay put, guys" she said. We didn't unlock the car but we did open the windows about half way. To our astonishment our beautiful, petite mother defiantly walked through the ruckus, went up to the two brawlers and shouted to the one on top. "Get off him right now! You'll kill him!" It was as forceful as she had ever sounded. I'll never forget her standing there with her hands on her hips (her "mad-as-hell" stance which we knew very well), seemingly oblivious to the others around her. Two men in the crowd must have been humbled by her audacity because they broke rank from the rest and separated the two combatants. In the distance we heard a siren. Minutes later a police car pulled up and we got going again. The whole incident took no more than ten minutes, but it has been seared in my memory ever since. From the back seat my youngest brother kept his arms lovingly around our mother's neck as she drove, while my other brother and I just stared in utter amazement at her all the way to the park. I learned a great lesson that day from our petite mother. I learned that I really had nothing to fear from a crowd like that -- as long as I never become a part of it. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: __ __ /_ _^^_ _\ _____|________|______ `=====.'""""""'.=====` / /a /a \ .-. | /\ | <" ) \ / / \ .`\, _'. \/\/\/ .'_ \ \_\ ./,' '-.\\'-------' \`------'/ '--""---'//.-' ###'.-'/________ \/""""\/ ________\'-.'### '/` \ : / `\` | | \ : | | \ \_____:_____ / [I=I=[_]I=I] / | \ / |_ \ / /\ \ / /##\ \ | ,/ ## \, | \ \ ## / / \ \ ## / / \ \##/ / jgs \ /\/\ / __,\_/X##X\_/.__ '.'/|\\XX//|\'.` '/'|.\##/,|`\' ## ## ## \ ## / / \ , \ \\##// , / /, /. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY Tara, 3, asked her mother, Gwen, what she was going to be for Halloween. "I don't think I'm going to dress up for Halloween this year," Gwen said. "What!" Tara exclaimed, "you're going to go naked!" On Halloween night the family's large dog was overly friendly, so when the man of the house answered the door, he told the dog in a booming voice, "SIT!" Immediately the two little trick-or-treaters sat down on his porch! Grandma Shirley ("Mimi") asked Tyler, 4, what he was going to be for Halloween. "A human candy bar!" Tyler quickly replied. Mimi started to tease him. She said she would stop by his house on Halloween night and eat his ears. Tyler became very serious and said, "No, Mimi, you can't eat my ears because I won't be able to hear." Then Mimi said she would have to eat his nose. "No, Mimi, I won't be able to smell!" They continued back and forth as Mimi opted for hands, feet, etc. until Tyler threw his hands up in the air and said, "JUST FORGET THE WHOLE THING. I'M GOING TO BE SUPERMAN!" .-. (e.e) (m) .-="=-. Melissa said the picture had a ghost, witch, spider and bats and the ghost was saying, "B-Zero-Zero!" "Mom, what does B-Zero-Zero spell?" Melissa asked. Jane explained the ghost was saying "BOO!" Logan, 2, kept trying on one Halloween costume after another. His reaction was always the same. "I don't want to be a pirate," he told his mother. "I don't want to be a scarecrow. I don't want to be a lion..." Finally his mother asked him, "What do you want to be?" He looked at her as if she were crazy and said, "Logan!" Zachie, 5, Diane's great nephew, was very excited about Halloween. Diane asked him what he wanted to be. "I want to be a cowboy and my little brother will be the cow!" he said. Lynne usually addresses her 3-year-old nephew Landon by a name like "cutie" or "honey." One day while talking to him on the phone she addressed him as "pumpkin." He interjected and said, "Aunt Lynne I am NOT a pumpkin; I don't even live in a patch!" .-. .-. .--' / \ '--. There was a bumble bee buzzing around the plants on the porch. "Look, a bumble bee!" Erin said. Bret replied, "That's not a bumble bee. That is a fly in a costume!" Donna was doing dishes when she heard Jayce, 6, approach the door. All of a sudden he said, "Oh, my G!" Donna leaned towards the window and said, "Jayce, don't say that!" He replied, "But, Grandma, there's a HUGE spider on the deck!" Donna told him to kill it with his shoe. There was a long pause and then Jayce hollered, "Grandma, my shoe is not that BIG!" -- Donna Johnson of Minnesota Britt, 3, was helping his "Nonnie" to dust. She told him to clean under the legs because cobwebs sometimes get under there.
