But there was one place I actually had a chance of going where I definitely didn't want to go. Vietnam. Don't get me wrong. I was as patriotic as the next guy. I loved my country. I was almost an Eagle Scout. And I could play a version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on my tuba that could bring tears to your eyes. At least, it brought tears to my band teacher's eyes. And it wasn't that I had strong feelings one way or the other about the morality of the war. I registered for the draft like I was supposed to when I turned 18, and I wasn't thinking about burning my draft card or moving to Canada or anything like that. The fact is, I didn't know all that much about the war's political implications, and I didn't really care -- not like I cared about my '62 Caddy, my collection of Neil Diamond records and somehow getting a date with a cute little sophomore named Becky. When it comes right down to it, I didn't want to go to Vietnam because... well, there just isn't any other way to say this -- I was scared. Scared of the jungle. Scared of the Viet Cong. Scared of napalm. Scared of Agent Orange. Scared of Russian weapons. Scared of body bags. Scared of being injured. Scared of being killed. Scared of my high draft number. Of course, that wasn't my public position. As far as everyone else was concerned, I was just really focused on getting my college education. And doing some volunteer work for my church. And getting married and starting a family. All of which was true. But the cold, hard fact of the matter was, I was interested in those things because they were a lot less frightening than Vietnam -- notwithstanding the prospect of finals, homesickness and potty training. So it was hard to know what to say when my high school classmate, John, told me he had joined the Marines and would likely be shipping out to 'Nam before the school year was out. "They can't do that, can they?" I asked, worried almost as much for him as I was for me. "Don't they have to let you graduate from high school first?" "I'm 19, almost 20," he said, shrugging his shoulders. He smiled at the puzzled look on my face. "I got held back a year," he said, smiling. "Maybe two, I don't remember." Suddenly I felt less embarrassed about how easily he had pinned me during a 9th grade wrestling tournament. It looked like man against boy, because it was. "Look," he said, "you know I've never been much good at this school stuff. About the only thing I'm any good at is fighting in the parking lot after football games. So I figure I might as well go someplace where they don't give you detention for fighting -- they give you medals." For the first time in the six years I had known John, I saw peace in his eyes. Peace -- because he was going to war. It didn't make sense, but then, few things did those days. I just knew that John, the parking lot warrior, had found his nobility. He was willing to go someplace and do a job that a lot of us were unwilling to do. In fact, just the thought of going there and doing that scared some of us to death. And that made him a hero -- at least, to me. I don't know how many hoods have become heroes in the service of their country. But every Veteran's Day I think about John and others like him who fought for peace. For their country, and for themselves. -- Joseph Walker =========================================================== >-->From SermondFodder: A true Story in Honor of Veterans Day _ (_) |_________________________________________ |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| | * * * * *| | |* * * * * |##########################| |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | |#########################################| | | |#########################################| | | |###################################JGS###| |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ | | | | | | | | >** The Boys of Iwo Jima ** By Michael T. Powers Each year my video production company is hired to go to Washington, D.C. with the eighth grade class from Clinton, Wisconsin where I grew up, to videotape their trip. I greatly enjoy visiting our nation's capitol, and each year I take some special memories back with me. This fall's trip was especially memorable. On the last night of our trip, we stopped at the Iwo Jima memorial. This memorial is the largest bronze statue in the world and depicts one of the most famous photographs in history-that of the six brave men raising the American flag at the top of Mount Surabachi on the Island of Iwo Jima, Japan during WW II. Over one hundred students and chaperones piled off the buses and headed towards the memorial. I noticed a solitary figure at the base of the statue, and as I got closer he asked, "Where are you guys from?" I told him that we were from Wisconsin. "Hey, I'm a Cheesehead, too! Come gather around Cheeseheads, and I will tell you a story." James Bradley just happened to be in Washington, D.C. to speak at the memorial the following day. He was there that night to say good-night to his dad, who has since passed away. He was just about to leave when he saw the buses pull up. I videotaped him as he spoke to us, and received his permission to share what he said from my videotape. It is one thing to tour the incredible monuments filled with history in Washington, D.C. but it is quite another to get the kind of insight we received that night. When all had gathered around he reverently began to speak. Here are his words from that night: "My name is James Bradley and I'm from Antigo, Wisconsin. My dad is on that statue, and I just wrote a book called Flags of Our Fathers which is #5 on the New York Times Best Seller list right now. It is the story of the six boys you see behind me. Six boys raised the flag. The first guy putting the pole in the ground is Harlon Block. Harlon was an all-state football player. He enlisted in the Marine Corps with all the senior members of his football team. They were off to play another type of game, a game called "War." But it didn't turn out to be a game. Harlon, at the age of twenty-one, died with his intestines in his hands. I don't say that to gross you out; I say that because there are generals who stand in front of this statue and talk about the glory of war. You guys need to know that most of the boys in Iwo Jima were seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen years old. (He pointed to the statue) You see this next guy? That's Rene Gagnon from New Hampshire. If you took Rene's helmet off at the moment this photo was taken, and looked in the webbing of that helmet, you would find a photograph. A photograph of his girlfriend. Rene put that in there for protection, because he was scared. He was eighteen years old. Boys won the battle of Iwo Jima. Boys. Not old men. The next guy here, the third guy in this tableau, was Sergeant Mike Strank. Mike is my hero. He was the hero of all these guys. They called him the "old man" because he was so old. He was already twenty-four. When Mike would motivate his boys in training camp, he didn't say, "Let's go kill the enemy" or "Let's die for our country." He knew he was talking to little boys. Instead he would say, "You do what I say, and I'll get you home to your mothers." The last guy on this side of the statue is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona. Ira Hayes walked off Iwo Jima. He went into the White House with my dad. President Truman told him, "You're a hero." He told reporters, "How can I feel like a hero when 250 of my buddies hit the island with me and only twenty-seven of us walked off alive?" So you take your class at school. 250 of you spending a year together having fun, doing everything together. Then all 250 of you hit the beach, but only twenty-seven of your classmates walk off alive. That was Ira Hayes. He had images of horror in his mind. Ira Hayes died dead drunk, face down at the age of thirty-two, ten years after this picture was taken. The next guy, going around the statue, is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky, a fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. His best friend, who is now 70, told me, "Yeah, you know, we took two cows up on the porch of the Hilltop General Store. Then we strung wire across the stairs so the cows couldn't get down. Then we fed them Epson salts. Those cows crapped all night." Yes, he was a fun-lovin' hillbilly boy. Franklin died on Iwo Jima at the age of nineteen. When the telegram came to tell his mother that he was dead, it went to the Hilltop General Store. A barefoot boy ran that telegram up to his mother's farm. The neighbors could hear her scream all night and into the morning. The neighbors lived a quarter of a mile away. The next guy, as we continue to go around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley from Antigo, Wisconsin, where I was raised. My dad lived until 1994, but he would never give interviews. When Walter Kronkite's producers, or the New York Times would call, we were trained as little kids to say, "No, I'm sorry sir, my dad's not here. He is in Canada fishing. No, there is no phone there, sir. No, we don't know when he is coming back." My dad never fished or even went to Canada. Usually he was sitting right there at the table eating his Campbell's soup, but we had to tell the press that he was out fishing. He didn't want to talk to the press. You see, my dad didn't see himself as a hero. Everyone thinks these guys are heroes, 'cause they are in a photo and a monument. My dad knew better. He was a medic. John Bradley from Wisconsin was a caregiver. In Iwo Jima he probably held over 200 boys as they died, and when boys died in Iwo Jima, they writhed and screamed in pain. When I was a little boy, my third grade teacher told me that my dad was a hero. When I went home and told my dad that, he looked at me and said, "I want you always to remember that the heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who did not come back. DID NOT come back." So that's the story about six nice young boys. Three died on Iwo Jima, and three came back as national heroes. Overall, 7000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the history of the Marine Corps. My voice is giving out, so I will end here. Thank you for your time." Suddenly the monument wasn't just a big old piece of metal with a flag sticking out of the top. It came to life before our eyes with the heartfelt words of a son who did indeed have a father who was a hero. Maybe not a hero in his own eyes, but a hero nonetheless. End Note: A few days before placing the flag, John Bradley had braved enemy mortar and machine-gun fire to administer first aid to a wounded Marine and then drag him to safety. For this act of heroism he would receive the Navy Cross, an award second only to the Medal of Honor. Bradley never mentioned his feat to his family. Only after his death did Bradley's son, James, begin to piece together the facts of his father's heroism. Michael T. They have left their loved ones to carry heavy loads. their hearts are often heavy, when they go down the very strange roads. We pray and write and listen for a call, We hope that no one comes to tell them their soldier took a fall. We learn to be brave and pick up and carry on. "On counts 2, 3, 4 and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutive with the other. "That's 80 years. "On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years consecutive to the 80 years just imposed. The Court imposes upon you each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 for the aggregate fine of $2 million. "The Court imposes upon you the $800 special assessment. "The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further. "This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and just sentence. It is a righteous sentence. "Let me explain this to you: We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. "There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in this court, where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice, you are not an enemy combatant. "You are a terrorist. "You are not a soldier in any war. "You are a terrorist. "To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. "Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, "You are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. "We do not sign documents with terrorists. "We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice. So war talk is way out of line in this court. "You are a big fellow. But you are not that big. You're no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. "A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders. "In a very real sense Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and where the TV crews were and he said you're no big deal. "You are no big deal. "What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. "What was it that led you here to this courtroom today? "I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I asked you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty, and admit you are guilty of doing. "And I have an answer for you.. "It may not satisfy you. But as I search this entire record it comes as close to understanding as I know. It seems to me you hate the one thing that is most precious: You hate our freedom. "Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, and to believe or not believe as we individually choose. "Here, in this society, the very winds carry freedom. They carry it everywhere from sea to shining sea. "It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom. So that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely. "It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have filed appeals, and will go on in their representation of you before other judges. "We are about it. Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties. "Make no mistake though: It is yet true that we will bear any burden, pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. "Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. "The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. Day after tomorrow it will be forgotten. But this, however, will long endure. Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice.. Justice, not war. Individual justice is in fact being done. "The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged. And juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically - to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice. "See that flag Mr. Reid? "That is the flag of the United States of America. "That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom. It always will. "Custody, Mr. Officer. Stand him down." I decided to strip the wood and refinish it for my daughter Melanie. The headboard was full of scratches. Just before starting to take the paint off, I noticed that one of the scratches was a date: September 18, 1946, the day my parents were married. Then it struck me - this was the first bed they had as husband and wife! Right above their wedding date was another name and date: "Elizabeth, October 22, 1947." I called my mother. "Who is Elizabeth," I asked, "and what does October 22, 1947, mean?" "She's your sister." I knew Mom had lost a baby, but I never saw this as anything more than a misfortune for my parents. After all, they went on to have five more children. "You gave her a name?" I asked. "Yes. Elizabeth has been watching us from heaven for forty-five years. She's as much a part of me as any of you." "Mom, there are a lot of dates and names I don't recognize on the headboard." "June 8, 1959?" Mom asked. "Yes. It says 'Sam.'" "Sam was a black man who worked for your father at the plant. Your father was fair with everyone, treating those under him with equal respect, no matter what their race or religion. But there was a lot of racial tension at that time. There was also a union strike and a lot of trouble. "One night, some strikers surrounded your dad before he got to his car. Sam showed up with several friends, and the crowd dispersed. No one was hurt. The strike eventually ended, but your dad never forgot Sam. He said Sam was an answer to his prayer." "Mom, there are other dates on the headboard. May I come over and talk to you about them?" I sensed the headboard was full of stories. I couldn't just strip and sand them away. Over lunch, Mom told me about January 14, 1951, the day she lost her purse at a department store. Three days later, the purse arrived in the mail. A letter from a woman named Amy said: "I took five dollars from your wallet to mail the purse to you. I hope you will understand." There was no return address, so Mom couldn't thank her, and there was nothing missing except the five dollars. Then there was George. On December 15, 1967, George shot a rattlesnake poised to strike my brother Dominick. On September 18, 1971, my parents celebrated their silver wedding anniversary and renewed their vows. I learned about a nurse named Janet who stayed by my mother and prayed with her after my sister Patricia's near-fatal fall from a swing. There was a stranger who broke up the attempted mugging of my father but left without giving his name. "Who is Ralph?" I asked. "On February 18, 1966, Ralph saved your brother's life in Da Nang. Ralph was killed two years later on his second tour of duty." My brother never spoke about the Vietnam War. The memories were deeply buried. My nephew's name is Ralph. Now I knew why. "I almost stripped away these remarkable stories," I said. "How could you give this headboard to me?" "Your dad and I carved our first date on the headboard the night we married. From then on, it was a diary of our life together. When Dad died, our life together was over. But the memories never die." When I told my husband about the headboard, he said, "There's room for a lot more stories." We moved the bed with the story-book headboard into our room. My husband and I have already carved in three dates and names. Someday, we'll tell Melanie the stories from her grandparents' lives and the stories from her parents' lives. And someday, the bed will pass on to her. -<>- /""""" | (')') C _) \ _| \__/ <___Y> / \ :\\ / | :|\ |___| :|/\ | | :|\ \ \ \ :| \ \_ \ \==L| \\\ ///` || | || | || | || | || | || | || [___]] jgs (____)) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >Something To Think About Today, I stood at my window and cursed the pouring rain. It is a Privilege for him to be given the right to ask the President questions - certainly NOT a right. Not all press have such an opportunity as he has been given time and time again to personally ask the President questions. I was also upset with CNN's response instead of apologizing for their press agents behavior they said the President was against free press! I think that was when the President decided enough was enough and banned him. On a search the main stream media headlines mostly say that the President attacked Acosta! Talk about fake news! The press video clearly shows Acosta playing tug of war with the woman trying to retrieve the mic back from him when the President asked her to. Acosta then actually tried to push her arm down and away. The photos on the main media of the event - all 7 - trying to prove their point that the White House lied, were from the BACK instead of the front. From the back, you can't see him try to push her arm down as she was struggling with him for the mic. View it from the front here... https://video.foxnews.com/v/5858882930001/ I am thankful that he will not be allowed to spew his hate and division at White House press conferences any more! It gets irritating when so called news people don't ask permanent questions but only want to fling stupid anti-Trump accusations and try to make it seem as a relative question. Just hateful. I was just noticing today CNN spouting off on Fox News and thought to myself, I think about the only people watching them is us Fox News viewers being forced to watch Fox's 'Fair and Balanced' news coverage with clips taken from CNN to give an opposing view. It is irritating to have to watch their hatred and bias over just about anything our President does or says. They spin it to be negative. Over 10,000 migrants who want to arrive all at once at our southern border saying that Trump has to let them in because they have rights, the President views as an invasion. However to CNN's news commentators, this is just a group of poorly nourished and impoverished families seeking refuge from the gangs, rapists and murderers in their own country. They say Trump is evil and racist for calling this an invasion. Of course those of us with a brain know that according to the rules, people seeking asylum generally must make their claim for asylum in the first country they enter after fleeing their own. Mexico offered them a safe haven and even jobs but they mostly refused. We also have watched the real news that shows a majority of these people are young able body men. They used brute force and violent rock throwing to break through the Mexican border fences injuring several of the Mexican police in so doing. I'd rather not have to watch CNN's lies all the time. I hope Fox News wises up and stops covering them all together then probably no one would give them any notice and they'd disappear or at least change into a real news company. President Trump’s message on last night’s midterms What’s next? President Trump made his priority clear in a press conference from the White House today. “Now is the time for members of both parties to join together, put partisanship aside, and keep the American economic miracle going strong,” he said, citing infrastructure, trade, and lowering the cost of prescription drugs as three areas he believes Democrats may want to work with Republicans. https://tinyurl.com/ydfpqp7c Ingraham: Trump's victory and the Democrats' race to defeat https://video.foxnews.com/v/5859108213001/ Gingrich's advice to Trump on dealing with a Democrat House https://video.foxnews.com/v/5859286223001/ WhiteHouseNews: https://www.whitehouse.gov/1600daily/ Latest From AFA: http://tinyurl.com/j7lakqw Students For Life https://tinyurl.com/yd5nxmu6 Latest From OperationRescue: http://www.operationrescue.org/ MOVE AMERICA FORWARD – SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS ON THE FRONT LINES http://www.moveamericaforward.org/ -<>- Star Spangled Banner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaxGNQE5ZLA Johnny Cash sings The Battle Hymn Of The Republic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQhyWv-PeVE "Take A Knee ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W27kOAgTrLU Green Beret & Former Seattle Seahawk Nate Boyer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOYmmr2QGrg The Engine That Won World War II - Jay Leno's Garage With 1390 hp, Jay demonstrates the power and engineering of the Merlin 1650-1 engine that was the heart of the P-51 Mustangs and the Lancaster bombers in World War II. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYcKdK7hmEo Visit Melissa's Online Store You can get anything you want (except for Melissa ) at the online store http://pdhomes.net/mall/babylissa/mySTORES/ISELL4.html ========================================================== __.------. Story Editor: by Laura Sosnowski Joyce Schowalter Illinois, USA I was 19 in the mid 70's, and worked in the Chicago loop, taking the train everyday from the suburbs to the historic underground Union Station. Like cattle we trudged past fast food restaurants, neon advertisements and shoe shine stands, among historic pillars towering toward decorated ceilings. As one, high powered professionals and millionaires, secretaries and mail clerks turned the corner toward the worn cement staircase that led us blinking into the outside light. En masse we walked the bridge across the river, then scattered to our jobs in the skyscrapers that stood behind street musicians and beggars. We were close to the strangers walking with us; there was no such thing as personal space. One held on tightly to purses and other valuables. One dry sunny day, the crowd coming out of the train station was sparse -- perhaps it was a holiday. As I crossed the bridge there were only two people ahead of me, a woman and a man. They were not together. The woman was dressed professionally, on her way to work. The man was dressed in old dirty clothes, carrying a large piece of cardboard, like an unfolded, flattened box, and holding it stretched out in front of him. I wondered mildly what it was and why he carried it that way. With so few people crossing the bridge, I also wondered why he was walking so close to the woman. Maybe he didn't notice there was more space for walking today. Maybe he was trying to pass her and couldn't because of his cardboard. Used to crowds, the woman probably didn't think much of it. He would walk up close to her, then fall back just a bit, then walk up close again. Suddenly from across the street a man in a business suit yelled out "Hey Lady! That guy just stole your wallet!" He started running toward them, dodging cars, as the man with the cardboard bolted away. She stopped and turned to check her purse. Hearing the yell, another man, also in professional dress ahead of us, jumped into action and headed off the escaping thief. The two men tackled the thief to the ground and retrieved the wallet, brushed themselves off, thanked each other, and returned the woman's wallet. Stunned, she merely thanked them. And -- on the outside -- everyone continued on their way as if nothing had happened. On the inside, I bet I'm not the only person permanently impacted by the speed and kindness of those two strangers in the city. I saw them help someone, ignoring any personal risk. My passive role was an important one, though it may not seem so. I was the young observer, in training for a life of being of whatever use I can be to others. For their inspiring example, I'm still grateful to them both. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "God knows that some lessons can only be learned over time. There are some things we cannot understand. Some things must be concealed. Sometimes it is necessary that we spend time doing nothing but waiting for God to show Himself or speak to us. God knows that it is in these times, when we have the least amount of control, that we can exercise the greatest amount of faith. In these times we are left to choose between trusting God, or wallowing in despair and self-pity. We can worry or we can trust. We can keep going or we can give up. There are some things we just can't control. And in those times we learn to trust." - Rocky Henriques Christianity is not meant to be merely a fire escape from a world of woe. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Living as God's Resident Aliens (By Kerry S. Doyal - Grace Bible Church) [Edited] "You ain't from around here, are ya?" Locals - of any locale - know their own. Transplants sooner or later give themselves away - even if they don't care to. Aliens - think foreigners, not E.T. - have an even harder time blending in: language, culture, habits... God's people are resident aliens wherever they live - not from around here. Our main citizenship is now heaven. In His mercy, God calls out people from the world to be His own and then leaves them here to testify of His greatness. Peter, Jesus' disciple, wrote of this in a letter encouraging scattered, persecuted believers. Thrust from their homelands, they were people stripped of national rights and roots - foreigners. Yet, God gave them a radical new identity, hope, home and mission. "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. "Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us" (1 Peter 2:9-12 - NIV). Peter's prompting makes for a good riddle: "What group of people is chosen from, yet left in, called out of, yet sent into, the world?" God's 'mercied' people! We are in the world as aliens on a mission. Abstaining from our own sinful desires, we are to live God-honoring lives among the world. We are wise to know and live our new identity. It is lofty to say the least. We are "royal priests" - King's kids, regal, and God's representatives, priests. That is a position of double privilege and power. No small honor or responsibility. Heady, eh? "A holy nation" - us? Indeed! (Note: this is not referring to America, but the Church Universal.) God's varied vagabonds have a standing of righteousness thanks to Christ (Romans 1:16, 17; 5:1-11; 2 Corinthians 5:21). We are our Savior's Saintly Citizens, by His grace, fit for heaven yet left here to serve. We are "a people belonging to God" - His! And He jealously guards His own. Quoting Peter again: "In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power..." (1:3-5). Such security! With such credentials, no wonder we don't fit in here. Yet - back to our riddle - we are to be dynamically involved in the world. We have been sent into, scattered out amidst, sprinkled among to share His supremacy: to "declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." We were called out from to call out about Him, proclaiming our Savior's praise-worthiness. He snatched up our sorry, sin-sacked souls from sure death. Sing out, speak up, share; others need this news. This requires redemptive engagement, rubbing elbows. Hermits need not apply [unless willing to change!]. A bright light under a bucket is useless. Who does that? Salt in the shaker is pretty but purposeless. God says shine, add savor, be a preservative (see Matthew 5:13-16.) I recommend Rebecca Pippert's "Out of the Saltshaker." God "mercied us" to "mission us". He left us behind enemy lines to invite others into His kingdom, to tell of His rescue mission (see Colossians 1:12, 13; Matthew 28:16-20). His rescue is much better than - but somewhat like - the rescue of those good-as-dead Chilean Miners. We too have been pulled from darkness and death to light and new life. Know with certainty: living out this mission means rejection, being misunderstood and even slandered. Jesus can relate. He knew rejection - by His very own people and creation (see John 1:12-14). Yet He modeled staying on mission. Peter again: "As you come to him, the living Stone - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ" (2:4, 5). As "sojourners & exiles" (ESV), we remember that our truest home address is heaven. We are left here as His ambassadors to this foreign land. Though hopeless misfits in this world with its ways and patterns, we are to find and make ways to show and tell of God's excellent greatness and declare the Gospel. --- ...See Also: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' God's Royal And Holy Priests http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/royalpriests.html -<>- __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >I Refuse To Be Discouraged (Author Unknown) I refuse to be discouraged, To be sad, or to cry; I refuse to be downhearted, and here's the reason why... I said, Your old courthouse is kinda run down. He said, Naw, it'll do for our little town. I said, Your flagpole has leaned a little bit, And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it. He said, Have a seat, and I sat down. Is this the first time you've been to our little town? I said, I think it is. He said, I don't like to brag, But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag. You see, we got a little hole in that flag there When Washington took it across the Delaware. And it got a bad rip in New Orleans With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams. And it almost fell at the Alamo Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on though. She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill. There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg, And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag. On Flanders Field in World War I She got a big hole from a Bertha gun. She turned blood red in World War II She hung limp and low a time or two. She was in Korea and Vietnam. She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam. She waved from our ships upon the briny foam, And now they've about quit waving her back here at home. In her own good land she's been abused -- She's been burned, dishonored, denied and refused. And the government for which she stands Is scandalized throughout the land. And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin, But she's in good shape for the shape she's in. 'Cause she's been through the fire before And I believe she can take a whole lot more. So we raise her up every morning, Take her down every night. We don't let her touch the ground And we fold her up right. On second thought I DO like to brag, 'Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag.
