Now and then, there were times when panic set in when they twitched and made moaning sounds and covered their heads and said "Dear God" and hugged the earth and fired their weapons blindly. They cringed and begged for the noise to stop and went wild and made stupid promises to themselves and God and their parents, hoping not to die. They carried the traditions of the United States military, and memories and images of those who served before them. They carried grief, terror, longing and their reputations. They carried the soldier's greatest fear -- the embarrassment of dishonor. They crawled into tunnels, walked point, and advanced under fire, so as not to die of embarrassment. They were afraid of dying, but too afraid to show it. They carried the emotional baggage of men and women who might die at any moment. She smiled at a sorrowful stranger. The smile seemed to make him feel better. He remembered past kindness' of a friend And wrote him a thank you letter. The friend was so pleased with the thank you That he left a large tip after lunch. The waitress, surprised by the size of the tip, Bet the whole thing on a hunch. The next day she picked up her winnings, And gave part to a man on the street. The man on the street was grateful; For two days he'd had nothing to eat. After he finished his dinner, He left for his small dingy room. He didn't know at that moment that he might be facing his doom. On the way he picked up a shivering puppy And took him home to get warm. The puppy was very grateful To be in out of the storm. That night the house caught on fire. The puppy barked the alarm. He barked till he woke the whole household And saved everybody from harm. One of the boys that he rescued Grew up to be President. How many time has this been said to you, "get over it." Well it depends on what you should get over, as the person that said it to you. Also it is very easy for them to tell you, "get over it." There is also the times the person saying "get over it' should be doing a little thinking. Which is how does the mean nasty words sound to the person that should "get over it" is. We all have some times or other have things to happen that is tough to "get over it." Now I have heard the joke about the man going to the football game. His wife has died, and the service is same time as the ball game. He goes to the ball game. I guess he got over it real quick. Maybe got his eye on some new young babe dancing on the side lines for that matter. We can all maybe laugh at the stupid joke, but you know what? I think I know of a few that might just do that. I know when Dad's mother died. Mother went to the services only because. She had no love what so ever for the woman. I can't say I blamed her either, knowing what I knew. She, my mother had been put down from day one by that woman, and for no reason. She and I both had been put down by that woman. It didn't take but a minute for either of us to get over it. Dad I can't say, I guess it was his mother. After looking at family history I am not so sure. There is things a person should get over, that is for sure, sometimes it isn't easy. You lost a dollar on the lottery, so can get over that. But say you lost the whole pay check or worse yet took out a loan on the house and lost that on the lottery,, it might take a day or two to "get over it." Your lady or man friend gave you the gate, well that might take a day or two. Maybe longer, that too depends on a few things. But you have a loved one to leave, this can take some time to get over. The words, "get over it" is stupid for anyone to say. A normal person it takes time to heal the wound. And it is a wound, it hurts to know the loved one is gone, and never to be seen again this side of Heaven. This much loved one can be human, can be a dog, a cat, or some other lovable living breathing thing make by the Lord God. The healing time may take days, weeks, months, even years.. One should never in this case say. Get Over It." One might think it to themselves, but never say it out loud. You never know how it may hurt the person that had to lose a loved one. -<>- .-. __/ ( , '-.____\ u=='/ \ /_/ \ .-'' | ( ____/_____ _>_/.-------- \/// // snd // >"Children Learn What They Live" by Dorothy Law Nolte If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. A good example is the 1963 commencement address at American University in Washington. It was there that President John F. Kennedy announced a halt to atmospheric nuclear testing and pledged to work for "not merely peace in our time, but peace for all time." Thirty-nine years later, another commencement address on the same campus showed what our culture regards today as important. According to THE WASHINGTON POST, nowadays what people are looking for in a commencement speaker isn't lofty rhetoric about "big issues." Rather, it's star power, combined with the ability to "amuse the grads." To achieve this winning combination, the American University class of 2002 heard from actress Goldie Hawn, who told the audience that it was time for them to attend the "college of you." In the same way, three years ago, Pulitzer Prize- winning columnist Anna Quindlen told graduates of Mt. Holyoke to "set aside" the expectations, demands, and requirements imposed by others. Instead, she urged her audience to do what they thought was best for them. This emphasis on entertainment and the self was repeated on college campuses across the country this commencement season. New graduates heard from the likes of humorist Garrison Keillor, Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates, and playwright Tony Kushner. What the POST calls the "new favored focus" of graduation speeches represents the coming together of two of the dominant trends in our culture. The first is what sociologist Philip Rieff calls "The Triumph of the Therapeutic." The values of psychotherapy with its emphasis on individual fulfillment, dominates our thinking. The therapeutic worldview urges us, as Hawn and Quindlen urged their audiences, to "find yourself." Instead of greatness or accomplishment or leadership -- the traditional themes of commencement speeches -- we should strive for emotional and psychological well-being. The second trend is the impact of mass media. Several generations raised on cable television, movies, video games, and the Internet have come to regard not being bored as a right. Thanks to our twenty-four-hour-a-day media culture, they expect that every bit of information coming their way will arrive in an entertaining package. If it doesn't, they're likely to just tune out. I wish I could say that Christians were immune to both of these trends. But as Ken Myers of Mars Hill Audio has written, our churches also feel the need to entertain. And Christians are just as preoccupied with self as the rest of the culture. Christians, of all people, should know that mighty acts and moral greatness are not achieved by people preoccupied with the self and insisting on being entertained. To rise to greatness requires just the reverse: a sacrifice of self and a willingness to conform our desires to a cause greater than ourselves. No wonder these qualities seem to be in short supply in younger people. We spend four years giving them an education and then pander to their worst instincts as we send them off into the world. NLT Throughout my life I have run into more people than I care to guess that have directed their lives on the ?when I? principal. When I am old enough to drive I'm going out on a real date. When I complete my education I'm going to sail around the world. It seems as though some people are always waiting for the next milestone in life before accomplishing something. The "when I" picture really becomes crystal clear when we speak about doing something for God. When I know the Bible I'm going to lead a Bible study. When I finish my nap I'm going to help out around the church. When I build my prayer closet I'm going to pray everyday. Goals for God seem to take a second place to some completed event in our lives. When I get out of college I'll start going to church regularly When I get a good paying job I'll go on a mission trip When I get married I'll join a Bible study When I get that kid through college I'll start tithing When I get that promotion I'll start giving alms When I get my mortgage paid off I'll give offerings When I retire I'll do something for Jesus All God is asking is for you to be available. He'll do the rest. So remove God from the next milestone in your life and stop being a "when I" person. Just be available - He'll do the rest. Prayer: Father, here I am - take me. Doyal) A Fool-Proven Recipe for Caustic Relationships: Take one cauldron of an angry person, Stir thoroughly with your own harsh responses, Yields scalding spillage, burns and pain. As Proverbs 15:1 instructs: "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." (NIV) When we encounter hotheads: Miss Miffed Molly & Ticked off Tommy, our response can change or charge the tone & interaction. We can add fuel by striking back, showing them who's all that. Or we defuse the ticking time bomb by wise, gentle replies. "A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare." (NLT) How to keep an argument going: - Don't ignore that comment said in anger - Forget forgiving; fire back - zing 'em good Such is a scorched earth approach to relationships. You can watch the damaging flames of relational furry set in. Smart - real smart. Or - Plan B - as in "Best": - Absorb the cheap shot, the hurtful dig, the rude question - Swallow your pride & tongue as you pray for grace. - Speak peace, answer with gentleness, calmly, if at all "A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire." (The Message) Prayer: "Lord, as you shut the mouths of the lions & protected Daniel, protect others by helping me keep mine shut. And, as you opened the tomb to bring life, may my open mouth bring healing and life to others in Jesus' name." More Meaningful Mouth Musings from Prov. 15: 2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. 4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. 7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools. -<>- "You cannot read the New Testament without sensing that the preachers [believers] were electrified by the power of the Gospel and swept off their feet by the wonder of the great revelation which had been committed to their trust. There is something wrong if a man charged with the greatest news in the world can be listless and rigid and dull. Who is going to believe that the glad tidings brought by [them] means literally more than anything else on earth if they are presented with no verve or fire or attack, and if the man himself is apathetic, uninspired, afflicted with spiritual coma in unsaying by his attitude what he says in words." - W.A. Hope this changes that. On this Memorial Day weekend when we remember those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy, it seems appropriate to share how each of the twelve apostles died. James the brother of John was killed with a sword during a persecution initiated by King Herod in AD 44. Andrew was hung on an olive tree around 70 AD. Doubting Thomas was thrust through with pine spears, tortured with red-hot plates, and burned alive around 70 AD. Philip went to Phrygia where he was tortured and crucified in AD 54. Matthew was beheaded sometime after 60 AD. Bartholomew was flayed after he refused to recant. After the removal of his skin, he was crucified in 70 AD. James the lesser was taken to the top of the Temple where a crowd gathered. When he refused to recant, he was thrown down. He survived the fall so a mob beat him to death with clubs in 63 AD. Simon the Zealot was crucified by the governor of Syria in AD 74. Judas Thaddeus ministered in Mesopotamia where he was beaten to death with sticks in AD 72. Matthias, who replaced Judas Iscariot, went to Ethiopia and was stoned to death while hanging on a cross in AD 70. According to Eusebius, the third century historian, Peter thought himself unworthy to die in the manner in which Jesus was crucified so he requested that he be crucified upside-down. And last but not least, John the beloved is the only disciple who died a natural death, but that doesn't mean he was exempt from persecution. He was exiled to the Island of Patmos and according to legend, thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. I'm not sure what that does to you. In fact, I'm not sure what that does to me. But I know this: I'm grateful for the estimated 70 million martyrs who have died because of their faith in Jesus Christ! And I'm grateful for the freedoms I enjoy as an American. May we never take them for granted. (Sources: Primary source is Eusebius' Church History. You can also try Michael Patton, What Happened to the Twelve Apostles? Had followed where pleasure and comfort led. Until one day in a quiet place, I met the Master face to face. With station and rank and wealth for my goal; Much thought for my body and none for my soul. I had entered to win in life's mad race, When I met the Master face to face. I met Him and knew Him and blushed to see, That His eyes, full of sorrow, were fixed on me. and I faltered and fell at His feet that day, While my castles melted and vanished away. Melted and vanished and in their place, Naught else did I see but the Master's face. And I cried aloud "Oh, make me meek, To follow the steps of Thy wounded feet." My thoughts are now for the souls of men. I have lost my life to find it again. Ever since that day in a quiet place, I met the Master face to face! --- ...Beautiful! Thanks LouiseAu!
