I had a job that paid just above minimum wage. Times were tough and I had a lot to learn about life. Soon I would go back to school and begin to build a better life for us. My son had his own piggy bank and liked to put pennies in it. He also discovered another piggy bank -- my wallet. I would find him trying to get money out to put in his own bank. That Friday afternoon, I had deposited my paycheck, keeping out just enough cash for gas and groceries for the next two weeks. The rest was for bills that were already late and in the mail. I picked up my son from daycare, stopped by home and headed to the grocery. After carefully selecting groceries for the next two weeks, I made my way to the checkout. When everything was rung up and bagged, I opened my purse to get out the little white envelope from the bank. But there was no envelope. I checked again. Then it dawned on me -- my son had gotten into my purse and taken the money while we were at home. I asked him about it, but you know kids that age -- they get out two or three words and then dissolve into babble. I explained this to the checker what happened and told her I would write a check. My plan was to deposit the money back into my account the next morning. It really wasn't a big deal, we even laughed about it. The store manager happened to be standing a row or two away listening to our conversation. He asked a strange question, "What bank do you go to?" I told him, and he asked me to wait. He came back with a little white envelope in his hand and asked how much cash I had. When I told him, he handed me the envelope. In it was my money. Someone had found it in the parking lot and turned it in. The deposit ticket was also there, and he had planned to call the bank in the morning. In that moment, I learned something about integrity that is still one of my core values today. The person who found that envelope had no idea that this was all the money I had for two weeks. They didn't know that once I got home and couldn't find the envelope, I would've had checks bouncing and be in even more financial trouble than I already was. That person didn't know any of this, but knew the right thing to do was to turn it in. Given my own financial situation, until that moment I cannot say with complete certainty that I would have made the same choice. I learned that day that the right thing is the only thing to do -- a lesson to a young struggling mother from a stranger with integrity. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend John-Paul :) __,,,__ ,-""-,-" "-,-""-, /,-' , .-'-.7.-'-. , '-,\ \( / _ _ \ )/ '-, { (0) (0) } ,-' / > .---. < \ |/ .-' \___/ '-. \| {, / ,_ _, \ ,} \ {, \ / ,} / ',\. This is because viruses can hide among regular files, or camoflage themselves as standard files. This section contains a detailed discussion of the symptoms of virus infection, how to recover data after a virus attack and how to prevent data from being corrupted by malware. Symptoms of infection There are a number of symptoms which indicate that your computer has been infected. If you notice "strange things" happening to your computer, namely: * unexpected messages or images are suddenly displayed * unusual sounds or music played at random * your CD-ROM drive mysteriously opens and closes * programs suddenly start on your computer * you receive notification from your firewall that some applications have attempted to connect to the Internet, although you did not initiate this, then it is very likely that your computer has been infected by a virus Additionally, there are some typical symptoms which indicate that your computer has been infected via email: * your friends mention that they have received messages from your address which you know you did not send * your mailbox contains a lot of messages without a sender's e-mail address or message header These problems, however, may not be caused by viruses. For example, infected messages that are supposedly coming from your address can actually be sent from a different computer. There is a range of secondary symptoms which indicate that your computer may be infected: * your computer freezes frequently or encounters errors * your computer slows down when programs are started * the operating system is unable to load * files and folders have been deleted or their content has changed * your hard drive is accessed too often (the light on your main unit flashes rapidly) * Microsoft Internet Explorer freezes or functions erratically e.g. you cannot close the application window 90% of the time the symptoms listed above indicate a hardware or software problem. Although such symptoms are unlikely to be caused by a virus, you should use your antivirus software to scan your computer fully. What you should do if you notice symptoms of infection If you notice that your computer is functioning erratically 1. Don't panic! This golden rule may prevent the loss of important data stored in your computer and help you avoid unnecessary stress. 2. Disconnect your computer from the Internet. 3. If your computer is connected to a Local Area Network, disconnect it. 4. If the computer cannot boot from the hard drive (error at startup), try to start the system in Safe Mode or from the Windows boot disk 5. Before taking any action, back up all critical data to an external drive (a floppy disk, CD, flash memory, etc.). 6. Install antivirus software if you do not have it installed. 7. Download the latest updates for your antivirus database. If possible, do not use the infected computer to download updates, but use a friend's computer, or a computer at your office, an Internet cafe, etc. This is important because if you are connected to the Internet, a virus can send important information to third parties or may try to send itself to all email addresses in your address book. You may also be able to obtain updates for your antivirus software on CD-ROM from the software vendors or authorized dealers. 8. Perform a full system scan. If no viruses are found during a scan If no viruses are found during the scan and the symptoms that alarmed you are classifed, you probably have no reason to worry. Check all hardware and software installed in your computer. Download Windows patches using Windows Update. Deinstall all unlicensed software from your computer and clean your hard drives of any junk files. If viruses are found during a scan A good antivirus solution will notify you if viruses are found during a scan, and offer several options for dealing with infected objects. In the vast majority of cases, personal computers are infected by worms, Trojan programs, or viruses. In most cases, lost data can be successfully recovered. 1. A good antivirus solution will provide the option to disinfect for infected objects, quarantine possibly infected objects and delete worms and Trojans. A report will provide the names of the malicious software discovered on your computer. 2. In some cases, you may need a special utility to recover data that have been corrupted. Visit your antivirus software vendor's site, and search for information about the virus, Trojan or worm which has infected your computer. Download any special utilities if these are available. 3. If your computer has been infected by viruses that exploit Microsoft Outlook Express vulnerabilities, you can fully clean your computer by disinfecting all infected objects, and then scanning and disinfecting the mail client's databases. This ensures that the malicious programs cannot be reactivated when messages which were infected prior to scanning are re-opened. You should also download and install security patches for Microsoft Outlook Express. 4. Unfortunately, some viruses cannot be removed from infected objects. Some of these viruses may corrupt information on your computer when infecting, and it may not be possible to restore this information. If a virus cannot be removed from a file, the file should be deleted. If your computer has suffered a severe virus attack Some viruses and Trojans can cause severe damage to your computer: 1. If you cannot boot from your hard drive (error at startup), try to boot from the Windows rescue disk. If the system can not recognize your hard drive, the virus has damaged the disk partition table. In this case, try to recover the partition table using scandisk, a standard Windows program. If this does not help, contact a computer data recovery service. Your computer vendor should be able to provide contact details for such services. If you have a disk management utility installed, some of your logical drives may be unavailable when you boot from the rescue disk. In this case, you should disinfect all accessible drives, reboot from the system hard drive and disinfect the remaining logical drives. 2. Recover corrupted files and applications using backup copies after you have scanned the drive containing this data. Diagnosing the problem using standard Windows tools Although this is not recommended unless you are an experience user, you may wish to: * check the integrity of the file system on your hard drive (using CHKDSK program) and repair file system errors. If there are a large number of errors, you must backup the most important files to removable storage media before fixing the errors * scan your computer after booting from the Windows rescue disk * use other standard Windows tools, for example, the scandisk utility For more details on using these utilities, refer to the Windows Help topics. If nothing helps If the symptoms described above persist even after you have scanned your computer, and checked all installed hardware and software and your hard drive using Windows utilities, you should send a message with a full description of the problem to your antivirus vendor's technical support department. Some antivirus software developers will analyse infected files submitted by users. After you have eradicated the infection Once you have eradicated the infection, scan all disks and removable storage media that may be infected by the virus. Make sure that you have appropriately configured antivirus software installed on your computer. Practice safe computing. All of these measures will help prevent your computer getting infected in the future. --- ...Good tips! All he had left was $10. He decided to use it to buy food and then wait for death as he was too proud to go begging. He was frustrated as he could find no job, and nobody was ready to help him. He bought food and as he sat down to eat, an old man and two little children came along and asked him to help them with food as they had not eaten for almost a week. He looked at them. They were so lean that he could see their bones coming out. Their eyes had gone into the socket. With the last bit of compassion he had, he gave them the food. The old man and children prayed that God would bless and prosper him and then gave him a very old coin. The young graduate said to them 'you need the prayer more than I do'. With no money, no job, no food, the young graduate went under the bridge to rest and wait for death. As he was about to sleep, he saw an old newspaper on the ground. He picked it up, and suddenly he saw an advertisement for people with old coins to come to a certain address. He decided to go there with the old coin the old man gave him. On getting to the place, he gave the proprietor the coin. The proprietor screamed, brought out a big book and showed the young graduate a photograph. This same old coin was worth 3 million dollars. The young graduate was overjoyed as the proprietor gave him a bank draft for 3 million dollars within an hour. He collected the Bank Draft and went in search of the old man and little children. By the time he got to where he left them eating, they had gone. He asked the owner of the canteen if he knew them. He said no but they left a note for you. He quickly opened the note thinking it would lead him to find them. This is what the note said:'You gave us your all and we have rewarded you back with the coin,' signed God your Father and Jesus Christ your Lord. 1 Kings 17:10-16; Matthew 11:28-30 PRAYER: Here is your financial blessing! One that I found effective is for me to just take the child for a car ride and talk. Some say it's the vibration from the car, others say it's the time away from any distractions such as TV, Video Games, Computer, IPod, etc. Either way, my kids usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our car ride together. Eye to eye contact helps a lot too. I've included a photo below of one of my sessions with my son, in case you would like to use the technique. (Matthew 13:33 KJV) The recipe's instructions were to add the following ingredients as listed - Water Salt Sweetener Gluten Oil Flour Yeast It had been years since I last made a loaf of bread. I live alone and - Well, it is just easier to buy bread from the store. But I had made a commitment to make bread so I got to work. WATER: If you tried to make bread without liquid you'd just have a pan of dry ingredients. Could you make your morning toast with just flour? Or the lunch sandwiches? No - Water would be an important addition. SALT: Yes, bread can be made without salt but it would taste quite bland so - OK here goes the salt. SWEETENER: I'm making bread am I not? Why do I want sweetener? Sweetener goes in cake or cookies or pie but BREAD? But with no sweetener the yeast won't grow and the bread would end up like a brick. The sweetener IS important GLUTEN: This will make the texture of the bread much softer. All flour has some gluten in it but a little added enhancement can make the dough better. OIL: Why do I need to add oil? We hear a lot about cholesterol and low fat diets, wouldn't it be better to leave out the oil? No, because one thing the oil does is make the bread moist enough that it doesn't stick in the pan. YEAST: Perhaps I could leave out the yeast? No, we still want our bread to raise and be light. Without yeast that would be impossible. OK. There I have all the ingredients in the pan, in the order the recipe listed so into the bread machine it goes and the baking process begins. While the mixture is warming I began to review the ingredients - Water, Salt, Sweetener, Gluten, Oil, Yeast - Uh Oh, where's the flour? With no flour we still can't make toast or sandwiches. So in went the flour. It is the same in our Christian life. We need to follow the recipe - God's word. We can do good works and we can claim to have faith and claim to love God, but his word tells us that faith without works is dead. We can't really LOVE God without BOTH faith and works. Jesus tells us in his Word "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its taste, with what shall it be salted?" Matthew 5:14 KJIIV I think Jesus is saying that if we just go along claiming to be Christ's followers and yet we don't have the 'real' salt of love, faith and works, we will be ineffective in showing His love and character to others. It is much like the loaf of bread - none of the ingredients can be omitted if the loaf is to be a good representative of a loaf of bread. Wynona Gordon --- ...It's a good illustration! I also like the 'magic' of cooking. You take what appears to be a bunch of yucky stuff and like magic it comes out to be a wonderfully delicious, nutrious, item to substaine our minds and bodies. I was showing this to my little 1 1/2 year old grandson the other day. I was mixing together butter, flour, beef builion cubes and milk to make a sauce for beef and noodles. He was pretty interested in it and wanted to eat it right away till I showed him it was rather yucky. I told him it had to cook. He watched and I showed him the magic of it as it started to thicken up. Once it was all done, he could hardly wait to eat it! He looked at me with true wonder in his eyes. Saying Wow - look at that! So it is with word of God.. On the outside it seems pretty tasteless in that it is a book of how to live our lives in a godly manner. Pretty boring. Until it begins to cook and gel inside the hearts of us, then we just can't seem to get enough of this great spiritual food! It is so yummy and good we love it and want more of it! Oh, and don't let our Father fool you - He is an EXCELLENT COOK! ;) -<>- ______ ____ /_____/\ /___/| / \ \ __| | |__ / /\ \/| /__| |/__/| | | || | ||___ ___|/ | |/_| | | | | | | __ | | |__|/ | | || | | | | || | | |__|/ |__|/ ONE OF THE BEST STORIES I'VE EVER HEARD!!!!!! As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant. It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big "F" at the top of his papers. At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners... He is a joy to be around.." His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle." His third grade teacher wrote, "His mother's death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn't show much interest, and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren't taken." Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class." By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs. Thompson took pains to open i t in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume. But she stifled the children's laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on he r wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, "Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to." After the children left, she cried for at least an hour. On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him , the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her "teacher's pets." A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was the best teacher he ever had in his whole life. Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life. Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he'd stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life. Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor's degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite t eacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer.... The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD. The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom. Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together. They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson's ear, "Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference" Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back She said, "Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn't know how to teach until I met you." (For you that don't know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.) Warm someone's heart today. . . pass this along. I love this story so very much, I cry every time I read it. Just try to make a difference in someone's life today? tomorrow? just "do it". "There are always two sides to a story. Thanks James. ============================================================= >-->HOOKED ON GIVING Dr. Mar Aprem of the ancient Chaldean Orthodox Church of the East in India tells a funny story about when a member of the church won a lottery worth 100,000 rupees. His wife went to the bishop and told him that she was afraid to tell this glad news to her husband because he had a heart problem and any sudden excitement could cause a heart attack. The bishop offered to break the news gently to her husband. He visited the house and asked the man, "Wouldn't it be a good thing if you won 1,000 rupees in the lottery?" The man replied that he still would have to work to support his family. "What about 10,000 rupees?" the bishop asked. The man still showed no excitement, so the bishop carefully raised the amount to 50,000 and finally to 100,000 rupees. "If I got 100,000 rupees, I would give half of it to you, your Excellency," the man replied. The bishop had a heart attack, and the man called an ambulance. We can get excited about winning and getting. But have you learned how fun it is to give -- and not only money? Engineering and machinery genius R. G. LeTourneau (1888 - 1969) discovered the great joy that can come of generosity. Besides establishing a private school (today's LeTourneau University), that remarkable man reportedly gave 90 percent of his income to worthwhile causes, while living on the remaining 10 percent. He became hooked on giving! And like I said, money is not the only commodity that is fun to give. We can give time, we can give our expertise, we can give our love or simply give a smile. What does that cost? The point is, none of us can ever run out of something worthwhile to give. Giving is fun. And addictive. -- Steve Goodier Now you can add your own comments to Life Support. http://stevegoodier .blogspot. com/ --- ...Yeah, I even heard Dr.Phil call a parent selfish for giving too much to their child saying they were being self gratifying more so then actually doing good for the child. ================================================================== >-->From SermondFodder: .-""-._ / ___/ \ _&_ _.--""|/ `\| // \\ .' He then would race through the sand dunes onto the grassy plateau behind the condos which lined the beach. He was a black and white mixed breed, with long hair and a long tail, and I never did discover his name. I walked up to a lady holding a leash, assuming she was the owner of the dog. I told her what joy it gave me to see her dog free and unleashed, having such a grand time. She agreed it was a sight to behold, and I went on my walk. On my return, the master and the dog were still on the beach. As I drew nearer I became concerned because the dog had run so far ahead he looked like a pencil in the distance. I was afraid he would get lost or be hurt in some way and not be able to get back to his master. I approached the owner once more and said, "aren't you afraid he won't be come back?" She told me this five year old dog had been her pet for only three months. She got him at the humane society, where a family who was moving had left him. She rescued him from certain death, and somehow I think the dog knew how special an owner he had. She was able to give him all the freedom he desired, because no matter how far he roamed, he always returned. God rescues us from certain death, and gives us life eternal through Jesus Christ. He stands with leash in hand, allowing us freedom galore. We may run from place to place, and even get far away from Him, but we will return. He knows it; once we are His, and we have been trained in His way, we shall return. The Bible gives us this promise, and I believe it is true.
