The doctor's words skipped down my spine and sent a thrill over my entire body! Where did I hear that you can never be too thin or too rich? However, a few years have passed since that comment was made, and multiple sclerosis, a hysterectomy, hormones, steroids, lack of exercise, age and food, have taken a toll on my body. Now I was on the cold OB/GYN table, with a paper napkin the size of a newborn's bib covering essential parts. "So how are you, Mrs. King?" my doctor asked. What else could a doctor ask, walking into the room and finding a whale had been harpooned and dry-docked on his examining table? "Well, doc, I'm twice the woman I used to be." After a double take at the catch of the day, his response was, "That you are!" I could have cried tears. But instead, I prayed, "God show me the humor in life!" Now, it is a proven fact -- laughing burns more calories than crying. So it is, I began to look for the humor in life. Gravity soon became a big issue with me. The group of ladies I claim as friends had a big discussion one day... "You're what has fallen?" I asked. "You mean yours hasn't?" one of my friends responded. "I don't know. I never noticed," I said. That was the first conversation my girlfriends and I had about gravity. They were referring to my bottom-side. My friends are a few years older and they had already experienced the first of the "Big Pull." "It's where it's always been, as far as I know." Neither my husband nor anyone else had mentioned seeing it in a different location, I insisted. Why do people's questions seem to bring about reality? I soon noticed my bottom side creeping. I found myself having to adjust my underwear. Where in the Sam Hill is it headed, I wondered. No sooner did I notice the fall than the spread occurred. I wish they had never mentioned this underside structural defect. I began keeping a closer eye on the reflection staring at me in the mirror. That was my second mistake. The first was keeping company with my "older" girlfriends. Soon I was buying uplifting bras. There was a conspiracy going on, I just knew it. But at least there were garments that could take care of that problem. "Bill, does my chin look like I have two?" Must be this mirror playing tricks on me, I reasoned. One day, I overheard someone speaking about how older women's knees sag. "What?" I couldn't believe that my whole body would one day be living somewhere around the South Pole. After a few years, one of my best friends commented, "I just hate these jowls of mine." "Jowls? What are jowls?" I asked. "Oh, just something else gravity gets a hold of," she said nonchalantly. "You girls can go there if you want, but I'm not moving any further south than I've already gone," I insisted. "Apron? No, I never wear an apron," I said in response to another comment. "I don't mean an apron you wear in the kitchen, silly. I'm talking about stomachs seen hanging below shirts or blouses." That was another notion I didn't care to entertain. "Not me!" I was adamant in my reply. "Oh, just wait, your turn's coming," another of my friends chided. "I'm not going to let myself go, not me, never," I insisted. "Betty, that's just part of getting older. Your body just starts heading south and leaves you with all these wonderful souvenirs." "No, thank you. I can do without such keepsakes," I responded. As the years are passing, though, it seems my body is too -- right on down and out. My age is running a tight race trying to keep up with my girlfriends, and so is my body. It seemed my younger days and their assets got up and went. I'm still searching their whereabouts. I got up the other morning, took my shower and looked in the mirror. There wasn't much left above my knees. I think I'm going to have to find new friends! They've put a hex on me! I am learning one thing, though -- never say never. I fear someday I may wake up, stand up and find myself lying in a puddle somewhere down around my ankles. I'm finding age can be depressing or funny. It's all in the attitude! -- Betty King ___________________________________________ Betty is a Heartwarmer Gem, a freelance writer, an author, newspaper columnist and speaker. But if we were to experience God's best for our lives, we have to learn to Let go. Letting go and allowing God to work toward healing our wounds will bring peace of mind and clarity of conscience. Letting go means forgiving. Plain and simple. The Greek word for forgive means "to let go." Read Matthew 6:14 Live each day as it it's your last. Read Ephesians 5:15-16 (See then that you walk circumspectly and not as fools but as wise redeeming the time.) Real love is helping others for Jesus sake even if they can never return the favor. Read 2 Corinthians 4:10 God is always available to hear the prayer of His child. Read Ephesians 3;12 (In Christ we have boldness and access with confidence through faith In Him.) Trials are the soil in which faith grows. Read Daniel 3:17 (Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace.) Some people find it easier to draw closer to God in magnificient buildings with some form of ritual. Others find they can seek God only in stark simplicity. Some people find themselves more comfortable with formality. The important thing is not how we do it but the sincerity and depth of purpose with which we do it. Read James 4:8 God keeps His Word, and He blesses those who keep theirs. Read Psalms 41:12 (In my integrity you uphold me and set me in your presence forever.) You do have a Divine destiny. Use your gifts for God's glory!!! Read Romans 12:4-5 (Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so, in Christ, we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.) Spiritual phonies will only take us for a ride, but Jesus will take us all the way to heaven. Read John 14:6 (I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me.) Any place can be the right place to witness for Christ. Read Acts 1:8 (You shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sameria and to the ends of the earth.) --- ...AMEN! When I came out of the store, a light rain had begun to fall. As I stood there, enjoying the refreshing coolness, I noticed that several of the local people sitting on the store porch were looking at me with displeasure. I asked if there was something wrong. “Mister,” one man drawled, “we’d appreciate it if you’d come up here on the porch. I pulled my shirt sleeve over my hand and began to rub the screen. The marks were still there so I used a paper towel and the marks were still there. I grabbed a dish towel and rubbed some more. They were still there but were beginning to fade. I hate to admit it but my wrist began to tire and I had to stop for a moment. I worked diligently for several more minutes to get the fingerprints off my screen. Normally I would not associate this type of task with the word "endurance" but in this case, it took a while to clean my screen. It seems like such a small thing in the big picture. But, in the midst of these kinds of tasks, I sometimes hear the Lord quietly say to me, "Be faithful in (and keep working on) the little things." We grow in our walk with the Lord by persevering in the day-to- day tasks that require our patience and endurance! The hardest tests of endurance are often disguised as the monotonous tasks in life. I must admit that I seriously considered just how badly I wanted my computer screen clean. Would I settle for just enough to get by, or would I keep going until the spots were gone completely? Sometimes I think that we are faced with the same question when God begins working on our “spots”. Will we persevere with Him? Do we have the endurance to keep going through the hard times? The writer of Hebrews mentions more than once our need for endurance. We "have need of endurance" to ultimately receive the promises of God. I wonder how often we get to the edge of the promise land and stop walking. There was a reason the Lord kept telling Joshua to go in and take the land that had been given to them. It took endurance and perseverance to keep walking, to keep taking one day at a time, and to stay focused on the goal. From fingerprint smudges to promise lands, the test for each one of us is whether or not we will keep working until the task is finished. The Lord is so good to give us the goal, and He will lead us every step of the way! However, we must be willing to not only step out but also to keep on stepping forward! Has the Lord given you a glimpse of the promise land He has for you? Do not stop moving towards it! Pray for endurance and perseverance! The training often comes in the little tasks of the day. Take every opportunity to see a job through to its completion and learn how to lean on the Lord for support and guidance! You never know when the day will come that you take that first step into your land of promise! They have damaged them, not out of cruelty but out of kindness. By giving their children all they could ever need or want they have deprived them of the very things God uses to make us into the men and women He has called us to be." If we seek the Lord and want His best, then circumstances will build us and prepare us for what He has planned. If we rebel or if we look for quick and easy shortcuts, then circumstances will destroy us and rob us of the future God wants us to enjoy." --Warren Wiersbe "Life on our troubled planet is often stormy and how we respond to its inevitable storms will determine the quality of our life and our destiny. The apostle's advice to his shipmates when they were caught in a life-threatening storm provides wise counsel for all of us. 1) Stay with the ship (Acts 27:31). 2). Get rid of all excess baggage (Acts 27:18, 19 &38). 3) Pray (Acts 27:29) and, 4) don't lose heart. Keep up your courage (Acts 27:25). Remember God is greater than any storm you will ever face." Most, if not all, the people in the community considered him a good man. He was well liked, respected, and many, if not all, considered it an honor to know him. He was a good businessman. You could mention his name in the business world and most, if not all, would recognize his name and acknowledge what a good businessman he was. He was fair, honest, and compassionate. This man was very involved in his spiritual community as well. In fact, he was a leader. When “Brother…” was mentioned heads nodded in agreement that he was indeed a good and righteous man. He taught classes, he would regularly take part in the public assemblies, and anytime a brother needed advice or assistance on a project this good man was ready to help. He offered wise and sensible counsel and was capable of helping on almost every project that came along. This was a good family man. He loved his wife and they had three very handsome and fine sons who married very three very pretty and fine young ladies. They all had children who of course were very fine and beautiful children. As you would expect this man was a wonderful grandfather and his daughters-in-law loved him as if he were their own father. From all outward appearances this man was a really good man, he was respected in the community, admired by his fellow church members, and loved by his family. He was a very good man. What no one knew, other than this man and God, is that he had a problem. Not a bad problem. In fact, some if not all, would not consider a problem at all. Although the problem was real it is often excused because after all, “We are only human. It’s just being responsible and a good steward.” You see this man was a worrier. He worried about everything. He worried about his business. He worried about his church. He worried about his family. He worried about how the ups and downs of economy would affect his business, his family, and his church. He worried about how worrying about his business might affect his family and his church. He worried about how worrying might affect his health. He worried about what would happen to his business, his church and his family if he stopped worrying about them. After all, he was the only one who really cared about his business, his church, and his family. He reasoned that if did not worry about his business, his church, and his family, then who would worry about it. He fully believed that worrying about his business, his church, and his family was his responsibility. That is who he was. That is how he functioned. When others were not around and when no one could see him, he worried. He worried as he drove to work. He worried when he was alone in his office. He worried when he drove to lunch meetings. He worried when he laid down in his bed. He worried when he woke up in wee hours of the night. He worried when the got up in the morning. He even worried when he closed his eyes to pray. He worried a lot. Then, he read the words of Jesus. The words of Jesus began to make sense. He heard the preacher say it, but he had to read it for himself. After hearing the sermon he read the words for himself in several different versions. First, he read Jesus’ words from the New International Version. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?” (Matthew 6:25, NIV 1984) Next he read it in Eugene Peterson’s The Message, "If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds. (Matthew 6:25-26 MSG) But it was in the King James Version where a phrase caught his eye: “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?” (Matthew 6:25 KJV) “Take no thought.” “Wow!” he thought to himself. “Jesus is talking about me. He is telling me to stop worrying.” “Jesus is telling me that if I am going to follow him, like I want to, I can ‘take no thought’ about tomorrow, or my food, or my clothes, or about what may or may not happen with my business tomorrow (or next year), or what may happen with my church (over the next five years), or what will happen to my family tomorrow (or next week).” Jesus’ words convicted this man. The words of Jesus changed this man’s thinking, and more importantly they changed his heart. He confessed his life-long habit of worrying. He began to turn things over to God…really turn them over to God. He began to trust God with his business, he began to trust God with his church, and he began to trust God with his family. For the first time in a very long time he enjoyed his drive to and from work, he enjoyed his time alone, he enjoyed sleeping at night, and he enjoyed living one day at a time. He learned to take no thought in tomorrow. He could breathe again. -- Tom Norvell Received from: A Norvell Note © Copyright 2012. -<>- To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER to cheer316@sc.rr.com ============================================================= >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: ()_()()_() / ..)(.. \ __/ ( || ) \_ (_/ * * (_) | | | || | | | \_/| \__/ | | > \ / <__,--,__|/|_> unknown >"Someone" What if you were a someone who needed a hug today and what if you were a someone who'd gone and lost their way? So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson." Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she ro lled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw s omeone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, "And think of me." He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan . After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: "You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you." Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard.... She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson." -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment Financial Stewardship http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/financialstewardship.html You Have 6 Minutes! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/6minutes.html Freaky Art Vans! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/artvan.html Attitude Is Everything 4 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/attitude4.html Fawn Rescue http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/fawnrescue.html Ray's Freedom Rock http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/freedomrock.html Miniature Wonderland http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/modeltrain.html Awesome Hotel http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/qhotel.html Classic Chevy Collection http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/chevy.html Chinese Olympic Cuisine! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/olympic.html Identity Theft 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/identitytheft3.html Limos In US History! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/limos.html Road Train Trucks! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/roadtrain.html -<>- >From Our Friend Annie :) Keep Calm http://tinyurl.com/c6q7ncr --- ...One of my personal Favorites! I had just bought a new car, however due to snow and icy conditions I refused to drive it on this day. I'd used public transportation for a date with a gal I'd been seeing a few months. We had just finished watching a movie, "Remains of the Day" starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. After leaving the theatre, the first open eatery we came across was a burger joint. We entered and ordered coffee and warm apple pie. We sat down and across from us, already seated, was a homeless man with all of his belongings close to him, huddling tight to his heavy jacket. He was in his late 50s or early 60s, with the obvious signs of spending years sleeping and living on the streets adding years to his appearance. His face was the colour towards the extreme part of red, bordering on purple. He obviously had come inside to warm up. He ignored the other patrons, sitting silently cutting an apple into thin slices with a plastic knife onto a tray in front of him. Another man entered the restaurant, obviously in a similar predicament in life to the man before us, and also seeking shelter from the -20C outside. Both men wore tattered overcoats that were obviously not purchased by them due to being over-sized for their frames. They were both smokers as their hands had that unhealthy leathery look about them, with yellow stains at the fingertips. The gentleman seated in front of us nodded in recognition to the man who had just entered, who returned the gesture, they clearly knew each other. The first man didn't say a word, yet with a calm wave of his hand offered his sliced apple to his friend. They shared the apple, however not together; the man who was the recipient took a few slices from the tray and seated himself a few tables away, while the man who offered the apple remained seated near us. My girlfriend looked at me and with tears in her eyes said, "That is beautiful." I can't explain the feelings of emotion that this evoked in me at the time -- and still does to this day, 22 years later. My girlfriend of that time is my wife now, and this story is still something my wife or I bring up from time to time. I've told this true story to many people over the years. Often, though I see they're touched by it, I don't think they truly appreciate that, in a calm, wordless way, this older homeless soul showed us what a hero really is. The wave of his hand radiated the regal dignity of a king, because it demonstrated the true meaning of sacrifice for another. His gesture said, "I have little or next to nothing, but if what I have benefits you in any way, consider it yours." =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _ \`*-. ) _`-. . : `. . : _ ' \ ; *` _. `*-._ `-.-' `-. ; ` `. :. . \ . \ . : .-' .
