>Can Sleep When the Wind Blows
Author: Unknown
Years ago a farmer owned land along the Atlantic seacoast. He
constantly advertised for hired hands. Most people were reluctant
to work on farms along the Atlantic. They dreaded the awful
storms that raged across the Atlantic, wreaking havoc on the
buildings and crops. As the farmer interviewed applicants for the
job, he received a steady stream of refusals.
Finally, a short, thin man, well past middle age, approached the
farmer. "Are you a good farmhand?" the farmer asked him.
"Well, I can sleep when the wind blows," answered the little man.
Although puzzled by this answer, the farmer, desperate for help,
hired him. The little man worked well around the farm, busy from
dawn to dusk, and the farmer felt satisfied with the man's work.
Then one night the wind howled loudly in from offshore. Jumping
out of bed, the farmer grabbed a lantern and rushed next door to
the hired hand's sleeping quarters. He shook the little man and
yelled, "Get up! A storm is coming! Tie things down before they
blow away!"
The little man rolled over in bed and said firmly, "No sir. I
told you, I can sleep when the wind blows."
Enraged by the response, the farmer was tempted to fire him on the
spot. Instead, he hurried outside to prepare for the storm. To
his amazement, he discovered that all of the haystacks had been
covered with tarpaulins. The cows were in the barn, the chickens
were in the coops, and the doors were barred. The shutters were
tightly secured. Everything was tied down. Nothing could blow away.
The farmer then understood what his hired hand meant, so he returned
to his bed to also sleep while the wind blew.
MORAL:
When you're prepared, spiritually, mentally, and physically, you
have nothing to fear. Can you sleep when the wind blows through
your life? The hired hand in the story was able to sleep because
he had secured the farm against the storm.
We, as believers in Christ, secure ourselves against the storms of
life by grounding ourselves in the Word of God.

>NO ACCIDENTS
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He
brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many
people" (Genesis 50:20 NLT).
When a cowboy applied for an insurance policy, the agent asked,
"Have you ever had any accidents?"
After a moment's reflection, the applicant responded, "Nope, but
a bronc did kick in two of my ribs last summer, and a couple of
years ago a rattlesnake bit me on the ankle."
"Wouldn't you call those accidents?" replied the puzzled agent.
"Naw," the cowboy said, "they did it on purpose!"
That story reminds me of the biblical truth that there are no
accidents in the lives of God's children. Read how Joseph
interpreted a difficult experience that had seemed like a great
calamity. He had been thrown into a pit and then sold as a slave.
This was a great test of his faith, and from the human standpoint
it appeared to be a tragic case of injustice, not a providential
means of blessing. But Joseph later learned that "God meant it
for good."
Are you passing through the deep waters of trial and
disappointment? Does everything seem to be going against you?
These apparent misfortunes are not accidents. The Lord allows
such things for a blessed purpose. So patiently trust Him. If you
know the Lord, someday you will praise Him for it all!

jgs '---'
Actually, God doesn't 'allow' evil and bad things to happen to
people in the sense that is presented here - 'for a blessed
purpose'.
Eph.3:
[20] Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above
all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh
in us,
God who can do 'exceeding abundantly above ALL That we ask or
think' [or think? really? WOWSERS! We cannot even IMAGINE
anything that God cannot do!] surely can stop all evil from
happening in our lives. Not a problem. However, he has this
thing called ethics and the way he does things and justice.
God will not do things that are not just and right. He will not
force himself on anyone. He has given us freedom of Will. Our
freedom of Will allows us to do as we please. We can CHOOSE to
go against God and turn our backs on him by sinning. When we
sin, we are like walking out of the fold. We walk out of God's
protection. Then of course the devil may do with us as he please
because we chose to not have God in our life. Bad things can
happen when we go against God.
Another way is with our belief system. If we are afraid or
negative about certain things we become like Job -
Job 3:
[25] For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and
that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
Believing = Receiving. Even if it is negative, it still is
believing. So bad things can happen when we fear them or
surround ourselves with negative things. Negative beliefs mean
bad for you!
You counter these by ASKING GOD And TRUSTING GOD to take care
of these things that bother you.
The other thing that happens to people is the devil - period.
We are in a war people! We have to be careful. We have to
1 Pet.5:
[8] Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil,
as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
If God just wanted to allow bad things to happen to people He
wouldn't have warned us and he certainly wouldn't have said
this...
3 John 1:
[2] Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper
and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
Would God say this to you while He allows you to have cancer,
or MS, or be poverty stricken or have your home taken from you,
or have your family harmed?
ABOVE ALL THINGS it is God's wish that you are IN HEALTH and
are prosperous as Long As You Are Alive!
God does NOT lie...
Num.23:
[19] God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man,
that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or
hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Instead, if you should have evil beset you, God says...
Rom.8:
[28] And we know that all things work together for good to them
that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
'Work together for good'. Not for everyone - but for those who
really love God and are His children, he'll do this. Why?
1 John.4
[19] We love him, because he first loved us.
He FIRST loved us.

THIS NAILS IT ON TRUMP ....food for thought.......
>A Message For Christians About Donald Trump
Wayne Allyn Root
(Wayne Allyn Root is a Libertarian-Republican, a TV celebrity,
producer, author, CEO, politician, and a born again Christian.)
Jun 24, 2016
I am a Jew turned evangelical Christian. I am also a passionate
supporter of Donald Trump.
I have a message for Christians who don’t like Donald Trump:
“YOU’RE MISSING THE BOAT.”
Christians have Trump all wrong. God sends messages in many forms.
You’re just not listening. God is talking, but you’re eyes and ears
are closed.
Here’s a famous joke about God and how he talks to us.
“A deeply faithful Christian man is stuck on roof of home with
massive flooding up to 2nd floor. Rowboat comes. He says
“No, I’m waiting for God. I’ve prayed and I know he’s coming.”
2ndrowboat. “No, I’m waiting for God.” 3rd rowboat. “No, I’m
waiting for God.” Water rises. The man drowns. Now he’s meeting
God in heaven.
The religious man says “Where were you God? I prayed. I was
faithful. I asked you to save me. Why would you abandon me?”
God says, “Hey dummy, I sent you 3 rowboats. Are you blind?”
Did you ever consider Trump is our rowboat?
Maybe God is trying to tell us something important- that now is not
the time for a “nice Christian guy” or a “gentleman” or a typical
Republican powder puff. Maybe now is the time for a natural born
killer, a ruthless fighter, a warrior.
Because right about now we need a miracle, or America is finished.
Maybe the rules of gentleman don’t apply here. Maybe a gentleman
and “all-around nice Christian” would lead us to slaughter.
Or do you want another Mitt Romney, Bob Dole, John McCain, Gerald
Ford or Paul Ryan? Did any of them win? Did they lead the GOP to
“the promised land?” Did they change the direction of America? No,
because if you don’t win, you have no say.
Paul Ryan couldn’t even deliver his own state, Wisconsin!
And as leader of the House, Paul Ryan rolls over to Obama like my
dog rolls over for a scrap of food, or a steak bone. He’s a useful
idiot. Nice, but obedient. I mean Paul Ryan…not my dog. My dog is
actually a pretty good defender and loyal.
Maybe God is knocking on your door so loud, but you’re not
listening.
Maybe God understands we need a "war leader" at this moment in time.
Maybe God understands if we don’t win this election, America is
dead.
It’s over. The greatest nation in world history will be gone.
Finished. Kaput. Adios.

...Most interesting! Thanks LouiseAu!
You know what? I just have to mention something here that amazes
me about God. Some of you may not understand this about the body
of Christ, but the more I work with this group and believe God
that He will help me do the best for Him and you through it, the
more I see this unfolding. The body of Christ has this awesome
connection that is invisible yet always there. Jesus Christ moves
throughout His body perfecting us and giving us wisdom on how best
to serve in his ministry. I see it over and over again.
For example, the thought struck me that the way certain people
are acting over Trump being elected by the people totally surprised
me. I thought I knew Mitt Romney better but he is acting like a
spiteful, vindictive person trying everything he can to divide the
Republican party just because Trump said some things about him he
didn't like. Trump was good enough for Romney to brag about him
supporting him for president and Trump was good enough for Romney
to take all the money Trump would donate to his campaign. But now
that the tables are reversed and it is Trump running, Romney is
mean and acts horribly toward him. To the point we all wonder if
perhaps he is being paid off or perhaps would prefer Hillary to
win. After all, anyone who doesn't get behind Trump now is actually
voting for Hillary.
I think about how these others are acting too - Kasich, Jeb Bush,
Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, and Glenn Beck to name a few. Makes me
wonder if we really know them. Maybe they are showing their true
colors now. Maybe they care less about the welfare of America and
more about their own agendas?
So that led me to thinking that perhaps Romney wasn't a good person
after all. Maybe God knew this and it is why Romney didn't succeed.
Hard to imagine him being worse than Obama for the country but then
God is a just God as well. If we support a deceiver and don't know
it and the rest of the country is big on ungodly things, then
perhaps God just lets what goes around come around. People get what
they deserve. The will of the people be done even if it is bad for
them.
So, I was thinking this and viola! In pops this email from LouiseAu.
Practically reading my mind! It is this connectivity that I am
speaking of with the body of Christ.
Perfect timing - is it a coincidence? I don't think so! I think God
and Jesus Christ are orchestrating us...

Eph.4:
[12] For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
[13] Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the
knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure
of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
[14] That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro,
and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of
men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
[15] But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all
things, which is the head, even Christ:
[16] From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted
by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual
working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body
unto the edifying of itself in love.

Why Trump?

>UPDATE on Cruz:
I had thought perhaps he would swallow his pride and be a
man of his honor who swore by signing an oath that he would
support the Republican Nominee - but I didn't get it wrong
what I believe God had showed me about him. He has not changed.
He does not care about his own lies or personal honor.
Though he says he does, Action Speaks Louder Than Words Ted!
He spoke at the RNC and AGAIN showed his true colors!
Ted Cruz told members of the Texas delegation in Cleveland that
he broke the pledge to support the Republican party's eventual
nominee because of Donald Trump's attacks on Cruz's family.
I agree that what Trump said about Cruz's wife was uncalled for.
I put the shoe on the other foot though and realize who Trump
is. Though I didn't watch his shows, I know when he was in the
public eye, he was an entertainer. He made people smile and
laugh. I think that is why he came out as so rude before. For
instance, what if the comedian Don Rickles had decided to run
for president? Best known as the insult comedian:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4m5HLVwsco
I think that was what Trump had to transition from. People
took him serious when he was just doing comedy. He is a quick
learner and found out making fun of people made him look like
a woman hater, a bigot etc etc. So he quit. But the residue
of his 'jokes' still remain with some people. They haven't
gotten to know who the real man Trump is because of it.
Phil Robertson sends message to Ted Cruz: 'You lost, he won'
"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson sent former presidential
candidate Ted Cruz a message on FOX & Friends Thursday morning:
Get over it. The reality star, who had been a big supporter of
Cruz during his campaign, said it's time for the Texas senator
to get behind Donald Trump.
'A fiery Cruz shot back: "No it's not. This is about right and
wrong."

>A man is only as good as his word!
When a man breaks his word, he breaks all credibility with that
party.
If you say you will do something, you do it.
If you make a date or meeting for five o’clock, you close to that
time.
If you make a promise, you keep it.
If you start a project, you finish it.
Men of their word are known to be trusted, superior, and reliable.
A man who breaks his word is known to be weak, unreliable, and
inferior. All of your actions have consequences.
Being a man of your word will allow you to rise above your station,
to achieve great power, and mastery over others and yourself. It
will grant you access to powerful people, and lift you to the
realms of epic greatness.
Excerpt from:
http://www.absoluteability.com/life/the-power-of-a-mans-word/
If you think of Trump in this context, you will see that Trump
must be a man of his word. A man of integrity. A man of character.
Why? Because if he were not, we'd have many more Trump scandals
then they have been able to dig up on him. A man who worked his
way into becoming a billionaire either did it with integrity and
good character or by scamming, lying and cheating others. Which
by now he'd be found out and be in jail.
However, Those who have been close to Trump for years like Bill
O'Reilly who have nothing to gain by supporting him say he is
a good man. His children are good mirrors of his character.
We should ALWAYS seek to tell the truth. Why? Because it is a
sin to do otherwise because it is not of God to be a liar.
This is how deeply Jesus felt about being a liar...
John 8:
[44] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father
ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in
the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a
lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of
it.
The devil is 'The father of it'. Shows you how evil a simple lie
can be.

>Special Sauce. Wait on Your Blessing
I was sitting at the drive-through window at McDonald's this weekend.
I did the usual thing; I drove up to the menu and ordered. I
proceeded to the first window and paid, then drove to the second
window and waited for the order. After sitting there for a few
minutes, the clerk slid back the window and asked, "Will you please
pull over to the side; your order is not ready."
"I was a little upset and even impatient, but I pulled over and
waited. I thought, "How come other folks ordered and drove straight
through and I have to wait." I waited for another two or three
minutes. It seemed like hours. Just as I was about to give up and
drive away, the clerk finally ran out, tapped on the window, and
handed me the order. Of course I asked, "Hey, what took so long?" She
replied, "You wanted the Special Sauce, which meant it had to be
especially made for that sandwich, it doesn't usually come with that
one."
This scene is a reflection of our prayer life. We make our request to
the Lord. Our menu is His Word, where He has listed promise after
promise. We stand before Him and request and plead and, sometimes,
even beg. We go to the first window and pay, sometimes with fervent
prayer, sometimes with prolonged suffering, sometimes with obedience,
and sometimes not at all. We then move to the second window and wait
for our order. If God doesn't answer within a few minutes, we become
upset.
You know the phrase, "Jesus, it's 5:00 p.m. Friday; I prayed to You
yesterday, and You still haven't answered. I can't wait much longer."
Why is it taking Him so long? I've seen people drive up before me and
they received their orders right away! We even go so far as to tap on
the window and ask if He has forgotten our order. We become
impatient. We become upset. We become downright mad.
Lord I asked for a mate ten days ago and I don't see him/her
anywhere. Lord, I've been asking for a new job for two years; others
have passed me by. I've been waiting on a financial blessing for ten
years and I still have more months than money. Where are You and why
haven't you blessed me?
And just when you think He is giving you the answer, He pulls back
the royal curtain of Eternity, and states, "Please pull over to the
side and wait a while longer." This once frustrated me to no end,
made me mad, made me want to give up, made me want to holler; that
is, until the clerk brought out my sandwich. Then, the revelation
became clear.
Do you know why the Lord has put you on the side? Do you know why you
have had to wait for this blessing longer than before? Do you know
why He has put you through more this time than ever? Do you know why
it seems as though He has not heard you and He does not care? Do you
know why it seems like you have had to go through more tears, more
pains, and more struggling this time?
Because this blessing is a Special Sauce Blessing! This is an
Overflowing, Pressed-Down, Shaken Together, Blessing! You made a
Special Order and God has been putting together a Special Sauce
Blessing for you and He has to prepare it for you!
That man you want . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That job you want . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That financial blessing . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That peace on the job . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That house . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That deeper anointing . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That promotion . . .He's putting together a Special Sauce!
That (whatever...you fill in the blank)...He's putting together a
Special Sauce!
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord,
thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end . . .
[And a Special Sauce]. Jeremiah 29:11
How many people have driven away before the clerk brought their food,
and how many people have missed their blessings because they did not
wait? Hang in there. Keep on waiting. You made a Special Order, now
wait on God's Special Sauce!
"But they that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they
shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary,
and they shall walk, and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)
They who wait shall receive a Special Sauce!

If you have ever tried to solve a Rubik's Cube then you're going
to love this amazing act from magician Steven Brundage. I have no
idea how he did this and I've watched it several times. Steven
said that he has probably solved the cube over 70,000 times and
that he spends 6 to 8 hours a day practicing his skills on the
Rubik's Cube. As you can see he totally amazed Simon and the other

>WHAT'CHA DOIN' TONIGHT?
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Something's just not right
We should be together Tonight
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Are your thoughts of me
Do you yearn to hold me close ... So tight
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Do you cry lonely tears and feel incomplete
Do your arms yearn to hold ME so tight tonight
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Kisses intoxicating as red, red wine
Holding each other tight A Nibble A Bite
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Vivid memories of your kisses flood over me
So real in the ligh of day yet just a haunting memory tonight
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
I am here and you are there
How can my arms hold you tonight
What'cha doin' tonight, My Love
What'cha doin' tonight
Allowing my dreams to take over and let us soar
Into each other's arms so we can forever be
TOGETHER TONIGHT

>The Cab Ride
So I walked to the door and knocked. 'Just a minute', answered a
frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across
the floor.
After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's
stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat
with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940s movie.
By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as
if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered
with sheets.
There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on
the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos
and glassware.
Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the
suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.
She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.
She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her.
'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother
treated'.
'Oh, you're such a good boy', she said. When we got in the cab,
she gave me an address, and then asked, 'Could you drive through
downtown?'
'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.
'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. "I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to
a hospice".
I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I
don't have any family left,' she continued. 'The doctor says I
don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the
meter.
'What route would you like me to take?' I asked.
For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me
the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.
We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had
lived when they were newlyweds. She had me pull up in front of a
furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had
gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building
or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly
said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'
We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a
low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway
that passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They
were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must
have been expecting her.
I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The
woman was already seated in a wheelchair.
'How much do I owe you?' she asked, reaching into her purse.
'Nothing,' I said
'You have to make a living,' she answered.
'There are other passengers,' I responded.
Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto
me tightly.
'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said.
'Thank you.'
I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.
Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life.
I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly
lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk.
What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was
impatient to end his shift?
What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then
driven away?
On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more
important in my life.
We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great
moments.
But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in
what others may consider a small one.
PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID,
BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.

>Penning a Final Farewell Story Editor:
by Richard Ewald Joyce Schowalter
California, USA
My friend Don is one of those guys who has never met a stranger.
Everyone he meets becomes a friend. Don is a college dean. The
program he administers is considered to be the best training program
of its type in the world. Not one of the best, but number one. This
is due almost entirely to Don's vision and personality. The word
dynamic was coined, I believe, to describe Don. I met Don when my
company became affiliated with his program.
This January I was at the college and Don dropped by. I asked him
how his Christmas was. "Not too good," he replied, his son had died.
I asked how old his son was. "In his early 20's. It was an accident."
I tried to say words that might comfort Don, but no mere words can
help at a time like this.
Don started to talk. He and his wife had planned a public church
service, and a private graveside service for family only. However,
after the accident the phone kept ringing with his son's friends
calling to say his son had been their best friend. After 30 calls,
Don and his wife decided they must do something for all these kids
who'd lost their best friend. They opened the graveside service to
everyone, so their son's friends would have another chance to say
goodbye.
Then Don got an idea. He went to the undertaker, another lifelong
friend, and asked if people at the graveside service could take a
felt tip pen and write a message to his son on the outside of the
casket. "Things like that just aren't done," the undertaker replied.
Don persisted and the undertaker reluctantly agreed, saying it must
be a wood casket for the pen to show. "Can I try a pen on a casket
in an inconspicuous place?" "No, if you mark it you own it." So Don
choose a casket he thought would take the marker's ink.
Before the service Don wrote a goodbye on the casket. At the
graveside service the Minster announced that anyone who wished could
come up and pen a farewell on the casket.
At first no one got up, then one person did, then another. Before
long everyone present was lined up for a chance to write their
good-byes. When the last person had finished, the entire casket was
covered in messages and drawings, the way a high school yearbook
gets decorated.
As Don walked back to the car, he turned and saw his undertaker
friend pick up a pen and write a final message.
I am proud to be Don's friend. In the depths of the worst experience
that a father can endure, he thought not of himself, but of his
son's friends. He then took steps to ease their pain. I know his
idea will be imitated by others and comfort many more people -- a
fitting tribute to both Don and his son.

>Wooden Plows
The Splendor of the Ordinary
By Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.
[edited]
Those of you who have seen The Passion of the Christ know that
the film is difficult to watch because it reveals the horrific
brutality of the scourging and crucifixion of Jesus. But the
film does contain one humorous moment, which hints at the high
value God places on work.
The scene shows Jesus at work as a carpenter, finishing a table.
His mother comes over to examine it. Her opinion? The table is
too high. Not to worry, Jesus responds; He'll build tall chairs
to go with it. Mary is not convinced. As she walks away, she
mutters, "It'll never catch on."
The scene is a reminder that Jesus spent most of His life engaged
in manual labor. Back in Galilee in the second century, the
Christian apologist Justin Martyr said that during his lifetime
it was still common to see farmers using plows made by the
carpenter Jesus of Nazareth.
In his book, titled The Call, theologian Os Guinness reminds us
that even the humblest work is important if it is done for God.
"How intriguing," Guinness writes, "to think of Jesus' plow
rather than His Cross-to wonder what it was that made His plows
and yokes last and stand out." Clearly, they must have been very
well made if they were still in use in the second century.
Today, Christians typically exalt spiritual work above manual
work. After all, what's making a plow compared with preaching to
multitudes, feeding the five thousand, or raising someone from the
dead? But the very fact that Jesus did make plows-and made them
well-suggests that any work can be done to the glory of God. Any
work can be a genuine calling. A calling, Guinness writes, is
anything we do "as a response to God's summons and service." When
God calls us to some task-even if it's something the world sees as
lowly-that task is invested with what Guinness calls "the splendor
of the ordinary."
"Drudgery done for ourselves or for other human audiences will
always be drudgery," he writes, but "drudgery done for God is
lifted and changed."
Accepting drudgery is one of the ways we practice discipleship-
learning to offer it up sacrificially to God. "We look for the big
things to do-[but] Jesus took a towel and washed the disciples'
feet," Guinness writes. "We like to speak and act out of the rare
moments of inspiration-[but] He requires our obedience in the
routine, the unseen, and the thankless." We, His followers, must
be willing to take on the humble and thankless tasks as well-and
not become impatient with changing diapers, doing homework, or
taking out the trash.
During the week leading up to Easter Sunday, we tend to focus on
the sacrificial elements of the life of Christ-of His willingness
to suffer and die on our behalf. But we should never forget that
the only begotten son of God almighty spent much of His life
laboring in a woodshop.
If you are frustrated in your job or think the work you have to
do is beneath you, just remember that for a season the One who
turned water into wine and raised the dead to life also made
wooden plows.

Molly's little brother Bob was the comic relief in their family
of five children, growing up in the 1950's. When he was five he
received a little rubber knife. The blade of the knife receded when
it was plunged into something, so that it looked life the knife had
sunk deep into its prey. One morning Molly's mother was in the
kitchen and she observed Bob pulling out an orange crate from the
garage. Puzzled, she watched as he climbed on top of it and pulling
the knife out of its holster he hollered, "Good-bye, cruel world, I
now commit adultery!" (He meant to say suicide.) It was loud enough
for every neighbor within several blocks to hear! -- Molly Lemmons

Tristin, 5, had to say good-bye to his St. Bernard who had
cancer. The day after, he told his grandmother he was glad Cody
died because she doesn't hurt anymore. Recently his great-
grandmother died. Tristin had visited her in the nursing home. The
last word she actually spoke was to to him ("good-bye) five days
before she died. After she died, Tristin said, "Grandma, you
shouldn't be sad because Great-grandma is in heaven and she isn't
sick anymore and she's playing with Cody and besides, she won't
be old anymore!" How simply said and how peaceful it made his
grandmother feel. -- Sharon Hohl (grandmother of Tristin) of

Kim, 9, had a school project that required her to make a
family tree poster. Her great-grandfather was half Indian, so Kim

Indian she is. Sandra tried to explain that Kim's grandmother
would be one-fourth, Sandra one-eighth and Kim would be one-
sixteenth. Kim said, "No, Mom, you don't understand. I want to
know what part of me is Indian. Is it my arm, leg or what?"
