It was spitting a few flakes of snow and the temperature was in the 20s. The winter of 1940 was cold in the mountains. It was a bone chilling, face freezing, penetrating kind of cold. Lilly was going about her morning chores in the warmth of her home, when she heard a knock on the door. Opening it, there stood Mr. Gibson, her neighbor. "Come in out of the cold." She opened the door wide for him. "Is everything ok? How is your wife?" Lilly asked. Mrs. Gibson had cancer and was confined to her bed most of the time. "She is about the same. I have come to ask a favor. We are almost out of wood for the stove and wondered if you had some to spare until we get our welfare check?" Lilly didn't know how to respond. Her wood supply was pretty low and her husband was gone for the week at a job sixty miles away. Thinking about the severe cold, she wondered if she would have enough wood for herself She told Mr. Gibson she would see what she could do and be back in touch. Her sister lived a couple of blocks away and she would find out if she had any coal or wood to spare. Lilly bundled up warmly and made the trek to her sister's house. Sitting in the kitchen with a hot cup of coffee, the sisters talked about what to do for the Gibsons. June told Lilly she had very little extra wood to burn as the weather had turned so cold, the stove seemed to eat it like tissue paper. They didn't have enough money to buy wood for the Gibsons but Lilly had an idea. The railroad tracks were not far away. Train cars loaded with coal sometimes spilled coal on the tracks. Maybe they could take a sack and borrow a wagon from one of June's sons and pick up some coal. It was a plan. They put on all the clothes and scarfs they could find and got the wagon and a tow sack before going out in the bitter cold. They walked down the tracks and put whatever coal they found into the sack. The icy wind brought tears to their eyes, which froze on their faces. When they reached the unloading depot, a man was on top of a box car of coal. He would shovel the coal down a chute to a waiting truck. The man greeted the ladies and remarked what a cold day it was. He asked why they were out in the frigid weather. They told him they were picking up coal to burn. The man lifted his large coal filled shovel and then turned the shovel sideways pouring the coal on the ground. Twice more he spilled his shovel of coal on the ground. He told them he was clumsy and the coal he couldn't get in the chute was just left on the ground to go to waste. Next he climbed down the ladder and muttered he needed a cup of coffee and would be back soon. The women had just finished filling the sack when he returned with two cups of hot coffee for them. They took the coffee and thanked him profusely. Lilly asked his first name, explaining she wanted to mention it in her prayers tonight. The man smiled. "Do you think the Lord will bless me for spilling my employer's coal on the ground?" June spoke up. "He will bless you for your act of kindness. He will bless you for keeping two elderly people warm during this cold spell. Not only will this coal warm their bodies, but it will also warm their hearts. Yes, you will be blessed." Thanking him again, they left. Somehow the trip home didn't seem as far. They took turns pulling the wagon now heavy with coal, but their hearts were much lighter. Upon reaching the Gibson home, the four friends held hands while they thanked God for the total stranger whose act of kindness had helped them accomplish their mission. The Gibsons had enough coal to last until the weather broke and their check arrived. -- Clara Wersterfer ___________________________________________ Clara was born in North Carolina and has lived in Texas for the past 39 years. ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend LouiseA :) , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Bible Character Declarations (By George Burr) I will, like Paul, forget those things which are behind and press forward; like David, lift up mine eye unto the hills from whence cometh my help; like Abraham, trust implicitly in my God; like Enoch, walk in daily fellowship with my heavenly Father; like Jehoshaphat, prepare my heart to seek God; like Moses, choose rather to suffer than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; like Daniel, commune with my God at all times; like Job, be patient under all circumstances; like Caleb and Joshua, refuse to be discouraged because of superior numbers; like Joseph, turn my back to all seductive advances; like Gideon, advance even though my friends be few; like Aaron and Hur, uphold the hands of my leaders; like Isaiah, consecrate myself to do God's work; like Andrew, strive to lead my brother into a closer walk with Christ; like John, lean upon the bosom of the Master and imbibe of His Spirit; like Stephen, manifest a forgiving spirit, toward all who seek my hurt; like Timothy, study the Word of God; like the heavenly host, proclaim the message of peace on earth and good will toward all men; and like my Lord Himself, overcome all earthly allurements by refusing to succumb to their enticements. --- ... The eagle will fly to some high spot and wait for the winds to come. When the storm hits, it sets its wings so that the wind will pick it up and lift it above the storm. While the storm rages below, the eagle is soaring above it. The eagle does not escape the storm. It simply uses the storm to lift it higher. It rises on the winds that bring the storm. When the storms of life come upon us - and all of us will experience them - we can rise above them by setting our minds and our belief toward God. The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God's power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storm that bring sickness, tragedy, failure and disappointment in our lives. We can soar above the storm. Remember, it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down, it is how we handle them. "But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." After much market research in the 1940's, the company felt that there was a need for a mix that would make it easy to bake a cake - one that would make a cake that was both moist and delicious. Now, a typical 'made-from-scratch' cake requires many ingredients and multiple steps of measuring and mixing these ingredients. Following years of trials with various formulas, the company produced what they believed was the perfect cake mix. Their pre-made cake mix, when combined with 1 cup of water produced a wonderfully delicious and moist cake! The responses from their taste tests were overwhelmingly positive! It was time to take their product to market! Soon, the shelves of supermarkets all over the country were filled with this perfect cake mix. Yet, despite all of their advertising and market research, the cake mix did not sell very well. The company quickly formed new focus groups to find out why the product wasn't selling. To their surprise, the same reason was given again and again: "It was too good to be true! NOTHING GOOD could be THAT easy!" So, the company pulled the entire product inventory from the supermarket shelves. They went back and reworked their cake formula. Now the formula requires their cake mix, 1 cup of water AND 1 egg. Simply by adding 1 egg to the formula, people felt like there was more work to making the cake so it MUST taste better. And the changed formula caused the cake mix to be an instant success and is still to this day one of the best-selling cake mixes on the market! Just for a moment I would like for you to think about how people reacted to this first cake mix and how people today often respond the Gospel Message of Jesus Christ. When people hear that they can have eternal life and forgiveness of their sins because of Jesus' death on the cross - they can't believe it. It is simply too good to be true! Isn't there more to it than that??? Don't I have to give money, or be nice, or do good deeds, or... The attitude that "There has to be more to it than that" has been around for ages. In the Bible there is a story about Moses leading the Israelites through the desert. The people became impatient and spoke out against God. As punishment, the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the people, which bit them, causing many to die. The people acknowledged that they had sinned against God and asked Moses to pray that God would take away the snakes. In Numbers 21:8 we read: "The Lord said to Moses, 'Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.' So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, he lived." I can not think of many things that require less effort than just LOOKING at something - yet that was what they were told to do. Could it really have been that easy? Just having to LOOK at the snake on the pole to be healed? Yes! IT WAS THAT EASY! But I also believe that there were those people who would NOT look at the snake - simply because they believed that it was too easy - and died as a result. What ties this together for me is the verses found in John 3:14-15: "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life." The snake represented the sin of the people and was lifted up on a pole - pointing the way to be healed and livee. Likewise, Jesus Christ accepted all of our sins, and was lifted up on the cross to die - pointing the way for each of us to be forgiven and healed of our sins, and to have eternal life with Him in heaven! The Bible describes eternal life in Romans 6:23: "...the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (NIV) Like any gift - it isn't earned or deserved. There is absolutely NOTHING that we can do on our own to earn or merit the gift of eternal life. Ephesians 2:9 explains further that "This does not depend on anything you have achieved, it is the free gift of God; and because it is not earned no man can boast about it." (Phillips Translation) So could it really be that easy? Asking Jesus Christ to forgive us of our sins and trusting in His death on the cross as the ONLY payment for the forgiveness of our sins? It really is that easy. "For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him should not be lost, but should have eternal life." John 3:16 (Phillips Translation) Prayer: "Lord Jesus, we live in a world where nothing is free and where we have to work to get anything. Yet You have provided us with the greatest gift we could ever want. Like any gift, it is free. Only the person who purchases a gift can give it. Help us to remember that though it is a free gift, it was purchased at a very high price - through Your death on the cross. Amen." --- ...What a beautiful reminder. He went through humiliation, torture and a most horrendous death to pay for us! We have only to accept Him as our Lord and savior and believe that God raised Jesus from the dead and we are saved! How sweet and easy God made it for us. God gave us his only begotten son, Jesus laid down His life and God raised Jesus from the dead. Romans 10: [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. The celebration of Easter is one of the most important holidays in Christian countries throughout the world. But many Easter customs are not religious. In America , there is an Easter "parade." In towns and cities, people go walking or to church in their newest clothes. Men sometimes dress formally and women and girls traditionally have a new Easter bonnet. Easter eggs, parades, and bunnies have no part at all in the Latin American Easter. All of Holy Week -the week before Easter- is a religious festival in Mexico and South America . On Palm Sunday, palm leaves are blessed in the churches, as they are in many North American churches. Churches are decorated with fruit and green plants. There are religious processions and Passion plays, telling the Easter story. Lent, the 40 days of penance, is an important and serious part of the Easter season. And Carnival, right before Lent, is the wildest holiday of the year in many parts of Europe and Latin America . There are great parades, street dances, and costume balls for three days or even longer. The biggest South American carnival is in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . Even the very poorest people work for months to have a beautiful costume for the street dances. French settlers brought this custom of carnival over to the United States . A Mardi Gras carnival is held in New Orleans each year. Mardi Gras really means "Fat Tuesday" in French, because everyone tries to eat up the good things they will not eat after Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. In England , people often have pancake festivals. In Germany , they make doughnuts. With all the parades and customs, though, Easter is still mainly a time to celebrate new life. Spring is in the air. The long days of winter and of Lent are over. It is a day to remember the man who was born on Christmas, died on Good Friday, and rose again on Easter Sunday. -<>- .======. | INRI | | | .========' '========. | _ xxxx _ | | /_;-.__ / _\ _.-;_\ | | `-._`'`_/'`.-' | '========.`\ /`========' | | / | |/-.( | |\_._\ | | \ \`;| | > |/| | / // | | |// | | \(\ | | `` | | | \\jgs _ _\\| \// |//_ _ \// _ ^ `^`^ ^`` `^ ^` ``^^` `^^` `^ `^ >Still He Walked He could hear the crowds screaming "crucify" "crucify" He could hear the hatred in their voices, These were His chosen people. Was he scared? You and I would have been, So His humanness would have mandated that He was. He felt alone. His disciples had left, denied, and even betrayed Him. He searched the crowd for a loving face and He saw very few. Then He turned His eyes to the only one that mattered And He knew that He would never be alone. He looked back at the crowd, at the people who were spitting At Him, throwing rocks at Him and mocking Him and He knew That because of Him, they would never be alone. So for them, He walked. The sounds of the hammer striking the spikes echoed through The crowd. The sounds of His cries echoed even louder, The cheers of the crowd, as His hands and feet Were nailed to the cross, intensified with each blow. Loudest of all was the still small voice inside His Heart that whispered "I am with you, my Son", And God's heart broke. He had let His Son walk. Jesus could have asked God to end His suffering, But instead He asked God to forgive. Not to forgive Him, but to forgive the ones who were persecuting Him. As He hung on that cross, dying an unimaginable death, He looked out and saw, not only the faces in the crowd, But also, the face of every person yet to be, And His heart filled with love. As His body was dying, His heart was alive. Alive with the limitless, unconditional love He feels for each of us. That is why He walked. When I forget how much Jesus loves me, I remember His walk. When I wonder if I can be forgiven, I remember His walk. When I need reminding of how to live like Christ, I think of His walk. I've heard he talks loudly, disrupts the class with bursts of negative comments, and doesn't participate in groups. He also stands out as the tallest, with the most mature body. Other parents tell his mother they're scared of him. Yet he's never been physically aggressive. In fact, he's hypersensitive to touch. I'll call him "Joe". Most parents and kids don't know Joe has Asperger's Syndrome. People with Asperger's must learn about socially appropriate behaviors, somehow their brains don't have it wired in like most of us. It's very hard for Joe to regulate his social behavior. He's worked hard since second grade. He has friends who support him with cues and comments, and has come a long way. Joe's in the highest-level math and reading classes. He wants to be on a school activity committee, but parent volunteers refuse him. They don't know he realizes he's an outcast, and works hard to fit into the school's social networks. I wish those parents had seen Joe walking home from school one cold winter day in January 2007. Driving by, I saw him run and kneel down by a little girl lying on the ground. Joe brushed hair from her eyes and smiled. She smiled back through tears, having slipped and fallen on the ice. Joe took off his coat and spread it out, then helped her move to sit on it. He gathered her belongings from four feet away, putting them by her on his coat. He wiped snow from her knees and hands, turning her hands front and back to check for injury. He helped put her hat back on. Then he helped her up, took her hand and walked her home. He carried her pack, then rang her doorbell. Her sister rushed her inside, but the little girl smiled back at Joe. He set her pack down by the door, and walked home smiling. I stopped by Joe's house later. I asked to talk to him and his mother looked worried. When I said, I want to compliment him, she looked so relieved. I told Joe that I'd seen him help a little girl today, and that I didn't get out of my car because he had everything under control. I told him he handled the emergency perfectly and I thought he was a hero. I saw Joe's beautiful smile again. His mom cried as she showed me to the door. We stepped outside and she sobbed because it was so rare for Joe to show compassion and to be acknowledged in a positive way. I cried because Joe's mother worries so much about his future and the challenges he faces from society. We cried together for all the "adults" in Joes' life who assume he's a bad kid. Please, take today to look at a "bad kid" a little differently, and somehow acknowledge the good in them. It means so much. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY . _, |`\__/ / \ . .( | __T| / | _.---=======' | // {} `| , , {} \ /___; ,' ) ,-;` `\ // | / ( ;|| ||`\\ ||| || \\ ||| jgs )\ )\ )|| `" `" `"" Breann's dad was driving. Becca pondered this for a few seconds and said, "Well, I guess I'd marry him - but if he was just half that good I'D SHAVE HIS CHEST!" -- Shirley in Illinois .-""""-. ////||\\\\ |/ \| ( @ @ ) : C : \ == / `|--|` .--`\__/`--. / \ / , , \ /`-./| |\.-'\ / /` | | `\ \ / / | | \ \ (/ | |______| | \) |_/ | | \_| |__|___/ | | | | | | ( ( | jgs | | | |==|==| __| _|__| ( ( ) `^^^`^^^^ Paul and Ruby are grandparents. Her husband grew a beard -- a nice white one. Then he shaved it off, but he always wears a moustache. Jordan, 5, combined the words moustache and beard in her mind and said, "Paw-paw, why didn't you shave your bustache?" -- Paul and Ruby from Marion, Illinois When Jordan was 3 he had trouble keeping his aunt, Melba, and his great aunt, Lola, straight as to who was whom. Melba and Lola were about the same age and though Melba has red hair and Lola had ash blonde hair, he still thought they were similar. (At his height maybe all he saw were their knees!) He called Melba, "Delma." No amount of explaining or telling him her name convinced him that her name was Melba. She was "Delma" to him forever more. So, when Lola came over for a visit one time, he ran to the door and his grandmother said to him from another room, "Is it Melba?" "No, it's the other Delma!" he told her. -- Crystal Miller (mother of Jordan) of Fairmount, Indiana Tyler, 5, came to stay with Grandma for the week-end. His mother brought him down and they all went out to eat. While talking through the meal, his mother mentioned that Tyler really liked the reruns of "The Rifleman." Asked the name of the man who plays the father, Tyler said, "His name is Paul ... That's what his little boy calls him." The son calls his father, Pa. -- Mary Johnson of Fortville, Indiana .::""-, .::""-. /:: \ /:: \ |:: | _..--""""--.._ |:: | '\:.__ / .' '. \:.__ / ||____|.' _..---"````'---. I pled and I wept for a clue to my fate, And the Master so gently said, "Child, you must wait." "Wait? You say, wait! " my indignant reply. "Lord, I need answers, I need to know why! Is your hand shortened? Or have you not heard? By Faith, I have asked, and I am claiming your Word. My future and all to which I can relate Hangs in the balance, and YOU tell me to "WAIT"? I'm needing a 'yes', a go-ahead sign, Or even a 'no' to which I can resign. And Lord, You promised that if we believe We need but to ask, and we shall receive. And Lord, I've been asking, and this is my cry: I'm weary of asking! I need a reply! Then quietly, softly, I learned of my fate As my Master said once again, "Child, you must wait." So, I slumped in my chair, defeated and taut And grumbled to God, "So, I'm waiting... for what?" He seemed, then, to kneel, and His eyes wept with mine, And he tenderly said, "I could give you a sign. I could shake the heavens, and darken the sun. I could raise the dead, and cause mountains to run. All you seek, I could give, and pleased you would be. You would have what you want - But, you wouldn't know Me. You'd not know the depth of My love for each saint; You'd not know the power that I give to the faint. You'd not learn to see through the clouds of despair; You'd not learn to trust just by knowing I'm there; You'd not know the joy of resting in Me When darkness and silence were all you could see. You'd never experience that fullness of love As the peace of My Spirit descends like a dove; You'd know that I give and I save... (for a start), But you'd not know the depth of the beat of My heart. The glow of My comfort late into the night, The faith that I give when you walk without sight, The depth that's beyond getting just what you asked Of an infinite God, who makes what you have LAST. You'd never know, should your pain quickly flee, What it means that "My grace is sufficient for Thee." Yes, your dreams for your loved one overnight would come true, But, Oh, the Loss! If I lost what I'm doing in you! So, be silent, My Child, and in time you will see That the greatest of gifts is to get to know Me. And though oft may My answers seem terribly late, My most precious answer of all is still, "WAIT." --Russell Kelfer Heb.10: [36] For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. >Updated FUN STUFF URLS - Oh Yeah :) Shangy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/urls.html FUN URLS ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -->BECOMING A CHRISTIAN HOW TO BE A CHRISTIAN! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -->FULL LENGTH - FREE On line AUDIO MP3 Christian Foundational Class http://www.truthortradition.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=61 NEW LIFE IN CHRIST! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -->This is for all you who love food andd DARE to make it at home Yep.
