Most people think of folks they're related to by blood or adoption -- mom and dad, grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and so on. I realized that all of my most cherished memories involve family. Ditto the biggest challenges, most hair-raising adventures, greatest triumphs, deepest heartaches and happiest moments. Family is where life happens. Where we share our lives, our hearts, and our stories. No one was better at "storifying" -- telling or spinning stories -- than my uncle, Norman Naas. In fact, there are no words for my Uncle Norm. He used them all. In spades. Uncle Norm smoked like a chimney, loved a roaring fireplace, good food, fine wine, and traveling. He loved feeding and entertaining friends, Romans and fellow countrymen by the bus load. The more, the merrier. Even in retirement Norm was a party waiting to happen. The thing I remember best about Norm was how much he loved books. Outside of dad, Norm was the best-read person and most voracious reader I've ever met. His rambling, bougainvillea and camellia-draped house groaned with books. They were everywhere, sprouting like weeds in a garden. You couldn't sit down without first removing a book from your planned perch. Books populated the kitchen, family room, living room, bathroom, bedrooms, coffee and kitchen tables and every available space. Even the garage housed shelf after shelf of books. When we visited Uncle Norm, I looked forward to afternoons when I'd climb into my uncle's ample lap with a book. "Well dear, what do we have today?" he'd ask, adjusting his glasses and oohing and ahing over my selection. "Ah, this is a good one!" he'd smile, even if it was the same "one" we'd read nineteen times in the last two days. Not surprisingly, Uncle Norm could quote entire scenes out of Shakespeare. He'd tell us about writers and literature for hours. Not lectures. These were more like command performances. Norm gobbled up books like a starving man, barely taking time to chew. After dinner Norm would regale us with his "storifying" expertise. Remember that Mel Gibson movie from 1993, Man Without a Face? Gibson plays Justin McLeod, a former teacher turned recluse after his face has been horribly disfigured in an auto accident. Known as "Hamburger Head" to the locals, McLeod is the subject of many rumors and wild stories. Chuck Norstadt (Nick Stahl) is a young boy determined to get into the same military school as his father. Desperate for a tutor, Chuck encounters the reclusive McLeod, and together they begin to help each other deal with a world that has shunned them both. There's a scene where teacher and student are reading Shakespeare (I think it's The Merchant of Venice). Except that they're not really reading it. At least, not in the usual sense. They're interpreting the text, acting it out with costumes and props. Teacher and student aren't reading the story. They ARE the story. That's what listening to Uncle Norm tell or read a story was like. Uncle Norm and I corresponded regularly when I was in high school and college. We did this the old fashioned way -- with paper and pen and postage. This was before email. A running dispute developed over an arcane theological point. I was as right as Norm was, as shy as a cyclone in making my own case on paper. I recall how disappointed I was when my uncle stopped writing. No, that's not it. Not exactly. His letters petered out slowly, over time. Like twin guttering candles. So did mine. It wasn't until my junior year in college that I noticed that I never heard from Uncle Norm anymore. I never asked why. An "oops" moment. I didn't detect any rancor between us -- we just got busy elsewhere and moved on. Another oops. Norm died a few years later. In one of my last missives to my uncle, I told Norm how much I liked to listen to him talk when I was a child. His rich, sonorous bass was as smooth as glass. That was nearly forty years ago. I sometimes wonder what else Norm might have said -- what else I might have said -- if just one of us hadn't allowed the other to drift. It's easy to take people for granted, isn't it? Especially family. How many things we would, could, should say and share and laugh about or argue over or lean back in our chairs and storify -- and never quite seem to get around to it? That uncle, that aunt, those parents, siblings, children or spouse seem as regular as the seasons. We mistake familiarity for permanence, which is a clever but deceptive chimera. That's why I choose to thank God for uncles. For books and letters and storyifying. And family. If we let Him, God somehow smoothes out the frayed edges of our oops-blotted lives, rewrites the smudges and slips in something new and fresh and beautiful. He can give us a fresh start. A blank page. A second chance. A new story. Like the one I'm writing now. Uncle Norm would've loved that. -- Kristine Lowder __________________________________________________ A multi-published author, Kristine Lowder resides in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Chris, their four sons and one yellow Labrador Retriever. ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend Jacinto :) `\|/' .---------------. ,'Y`. _( To think.... )_________ )|._.|( ( Doesn't that involve little ) /(___)\ ""( little lightbulbs over )" ( ) ""( My head ??? )""""""" `..-.,' """"""""""""" |"| .--' `--. The water from the well was remarkably pure and cold. No matter how hot the summer or how severe the drought, the well was always a source of refreshment and joy. The faithful old well was a big part of his memories of summer vacations at the farmhouse. The years passed and eventually the farmhouse was modernized. Wiring brought electric lights, and indoor plumbing brought hot and cold running water. The old well was no longer needed, so it was sealed for use in possible future emergencies. One summer day, years later, John Stafford had a desire for cold, pure water. He unsealed the well and lowered a bucket for a nostalgic taste of the delightful refreshment he remembered. He was shocked to discover that the well that once had survived the severest droughts was bone dry! He asked local residents why their well had gone dry. He learned that wells of that sort were fed by hundreds of tiny underground rivulets which seep a steady flow of water. As long as the water is drawn out of the well, new water will flow in through the rivulets, keeping them open for more to flow. But when the water stops flowing, the rivulets clog with mud and close up. The well dried up not because it was used too much, but because it wasn’t used enough! Do you see an analogy to worship and developing a daily time of prayer and devotion. The consequence of not drinking deeply of God is to eventually lose the ability to drink at all. Prayerlessness is its own punishment. -<>- ___ /_\_\ |;-^-'| ; ._ d - j :. ,<%@. |-_-| / \ {_ _,l ___/\_ _/\_ \,< ___ <~L~>\. /___\_\'/_/_`-.( `___\ \ - |` /___ \ \|/|po /||_/-___L":--;" L _ \ \ |o|LY| |(n==\^\^''--`-,-_ [-><-]=3 || ^;| |`\ _')>\ /<__/\ |< !c)|o ; |;| "| _' \ \/ /po | |- | | ; ' |,-. |.V \/ |LY | |\__, _L |o : | / \ \||\ |o^ ^| | _|/| / _\__ : / 7 '<|`. | | | / |L/ < /\: | Y \ | \|' | | | |/ /_ | | | | \| A|. | | /| |/|PO| | || | | |V| | | || |<|LY| | || | |,| | |_ | / | | ^^ | | | | | |____| |" | | | | | | | | |#^' |4 \ | | | | | | |,| | |%_| | | |m | A \ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | / | / | | \ || | | | | | | / /| |__| || | | l | | |> / / | | \___/|_A_| | | | | / / | | | | || |m1a >What's Your Identity? Since 1990, I've enjoyed being "The Sports Spectrum guy" because of my work with that magazine. We all have little titles that others use to identify us. Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" (Mark 8:27). Some thought He was Elijah or another prophet. But those who knew Him best said, "You are the Christ" (v.29). That was the right label for the Savior of the world. What are you called by those who know you best? Do they say, "He's a follower of Jesus—you can just tell"? It may depend on how you talk with people, how you treat your family, and the way you live and how you speak daily in your life. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck." He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Fortunately Lauren wanted a small wedding with 20-30 close friends and relatives. She was in Orlando, Florida, John was stationed in Kentucky, and I was in Connecticut. Her finance's family generously offered their help to plan everything, and their Tampa area home for the reception. I obtained vacation time to attend, but I was my 84-year-old mother's primary caregiver. She had many health issues, and lived in a house near mine. I worried about leaving her alone for 11 or 12 days. I searched for people to check up on Mom or stay with her, but she was uncooperative and didn't want a stranger in her home. While I understood that, it left me with a major problem. I tried to put that aside as I helped with wedding plans as much as possible by phone. We didn't invite my family members to the wedding because of the short notice and the distant location. As the date for Lauren's wedding approached, I arranged for care for my cats, bought my airline ticket, arranged a rental car and bought a dress -- but still had no solution to the problem of my mother being alone. One evening my sister Joan, who lived in South Carolina, called to say she would come to the wedding. She wanted Lauren to have family members present at this significant event in her life. I was surprised and a little worried about adding more people, but gave her the details about dates, and locations. In addition, we'd had problems with finding a hotel because the men's college basketball playoffs were in town at the same time. Joan said she'd start making arrangements to fly or drive to Florida. We began talking about Mom, and I broke down and cried because I was so worried about her staying alone. Joan kept saying Mom would be OK, but I wasn't convinced, because this trip was so long. But we said goodnight and left it at that. About three days later Joan called to say she had a better idea. She would go to our mother's house and stay with her while I was at Lauren's wedding. Of course I cried with surprise and delight. She would arrive two days after I left Connecticut, and leave two days before I returned. Thus my mother would only be alone for a total of four days, and in just two-day increments. I went to Lauren's wedding with a free mind and heart, and enjoyed the days I spent with her in Florida. For that very important day in my and my daughter's life, I will never forget the gift of peace of mind my sister gave me. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _ _ _(_)_ wWWWw _ _(_)_ @@@@ (_)@(_) vVVVv _ @@@@ (___) _(_)_ @@@@ (_)@(_) @@()@@ wWWWw (_)\ (___) _(_)_ @@()@@ Y (_)@(_) @@()@@ wWWWw (_)\ @@@@ (___) `|/ Y (_)@(_) @@@@ \|/ (_)\ @@@@ (___) `|/ / Y \| \|/ /(_) \| |/ | / Y \| \ | \ |/ | / \ | / \|/ |/ \| \|/\ | \ |/ | jgs|// \\|/// \\\|//\\\|///\|/// \\\|// \\|// \\\|// |// \\|/// \\\|/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >THE FUNNY THINGS KIDS SAY *Not far from Connie's apartment building, there is an area between the street and the pavement that someone has planted with many bulbs. (She scrambled one egg and he ate all of it!) - Mrs. Charles Boxell (great-grandmother) of Warren, Indiana Another great-grandson, 3, didn't understand how great-grandma died. His mother explained that great-grandma is in heaven and God made her well. He said, "Why couldn't He do it down here?" , .--'|} / /}} .=\.--'`\} //` '---./` || /| \\| | |\_\\/ \__/\\ \\ jgs \| For Sophia, being a feminine girly-girl comes naturally. Recently she protested against wearing a gray shirt and wasn't happy until she changed into pink from head to toe. Later Nadine decided to wear a black shirt with a black and white scarf. Sophia observed her mother with disappointment and said, "I'm not really OK with you wearing black. Can you paint that shirt pink or purple?" - Nadine Kline of California Erika is in her first year of teaching kindergarten near Indianapolis. She was explaining to students that they need to use nice words to each other rather than saying mean or hurtful things. She gave examples to them like, "I like your shoes today," or "You did a really good job writing that story." A little bit later, she overheard one student say to another, "I like your loose tooth." -Julie Carmicheal (mother of Erika) The next several stories are from Mrs. Elmer Schwartz of rural Indiana who shares memories from a while back. , .--'|} _ , / /}} -====;o`\/ } .=\.--'`\} \-'\-'----. //` '---./` \ |-..-'` || /| /\/\ \\| | `--` |\_\\/ \__/\\ \\ jgs \| As a teenage, Mrs. Schwartz worked as a babysitter. Both parents were teachers. Because Mrs. Schwartz was Amish, the mother asked her to teach their children her language. One evening after coming home they asked little Dawn if she learned anything that day. She said, "Ich vase nit." (Ich weiss nicht.) The mother, anxious to learn some words, asked Dawn, "What does that mean?" Dawn said, "I don't know." The mother, getting worked up, said, "You do, too, know what that means." Dawn told her mother again, "Mommy, it means 'I don't know!'" The children were tumbling, roughly. John, 4, got a scratch on his face. A new wash cloth was used to clean him up. John whimpered. A week later when Mrs. Schwartz wanted to wash the children up, she used the same new wash cloth. John held out his hand, "Mom, don't!" he said. "That wash cloth hurts." John, 5, was watching his mother roll out pie dough. Holding a little wad of dough, he asked, "What are you going to do with his?" His mother replied, "I'll just throw it away." With one toss, John threw the dough clear across the table. As Mrs. Schwartz was getting supper ready, she heard her three preschoolers chant: "Bubble gum, bubble gum, 45, 50!" (It should have been, "Double 10, double 10...") Mrs. Schwartz told her grandson, Andrew, 4, that she had to close the door because a draft would come in. Running to the window, Andrew asked, "Where?" She tried to explain that you can't see it, as it is the wind, but she couldn't explain it well enough and was still asking where the draft was! \/ _ /_) (8_))}- . \_) '. .--. . , .-.-,_, : '. .' )`-.>'` ( '---'`; / `\ | . | | | _.' \ / / .' `=(\ /.=` ' `-;`.-' '._ `)| , ` ' ' ' ' ' || .-'| ,_|| \_,/ , \|| .' |\|\ , ||/ ,_\` |/| |Y_, '-.'-._\||/ >_.-`Y| ` ,_|| \|| || jgs || |/ Beth Munk of Indiana shared this car conversation at the end of the day between her children, Della, 5, and Deegan, 6: Della - "No one would play with me today." Deegan - "Were you being a good friend?" Della - "Um yea, just no one played with me." Deegan - "Della, you have to be OK with you. And just you." Della - "But I want to play with someone." Deegan - "Della, it isn't always about you. Sometimes you have to push your feelings aside and see what other people need." Della - "Ahh, I just wanna play." Zenna, 4, was at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandpa had his TV on in the kitchen. Cartoons were on. As they sat down at the table ready to eat, Janice said, "Let's pray." Zenna bowed her head, closed her eyes, folded her hands and began praying. They looked over at her - she had one eye open, watching TV! -Grandparents Janice and Michael Smith of Corunna, Indiana Here is another story from the Smiths. When the grandchildren were little, Grandpa was cooking on the grill. The kids were sitting at the patio table waiting to eat. Finally, Grandpa announced it was ready and asked who wanted to say the prayer. Five pairs of hands went up and each child yelled, "Me, me!" Grandpa told Tori, 4, that she could say it. All got quiet and everyone bowed their head, folded their hands. She said, "Prayer." After a while of silence, Grandpa said, "That'll do." They ate. When Joyce picked up a dozen eggs, Taylor, said, "Grandma, look, chocolate eggs!" Another woman said, "I think she is talking about brown eggs." Joyce told Taylor that brown eggs are the same as the white eggs that they get. Another lady said, "Yes, but they are as expensive as chocolate eggs!" - Joyce Fugate of Garrett, Indiana Note: You are welcomed to use, copy and share these stories, but please reference http://www.funnykids.com as the source. ========================================================== >-->From Our Friend LouiseA :) , __ \/ __ /\^/`\ /o \{}/ o\ If I had a flower for each time | \/ | \ () / I thought of you, my garden | | | `> /\ <` ,,, would be full... \ \ / @@@@ (o/\/\o) {{{}} _ _ '\\//' @@()@@ _ ) ( ~Y~ @@@@ _{ ' }_ || @@@@ _(_)_ wWWWw .oOOo. @@()@@ { `.!.` } || ,/ (_)@(_) (___) OO()OO @@@@ _ ',_/Y\_,' || ,\ | /) (_)\ Y 'OOOO',,,(\|/ _(_)_ {_,_} |\ || |\\|// vVVVv`|/@@@@ _ \/{{}}}\| (_)@(_) | ,,, | | || | |;,,,(___) |@@()@@ _(_)_| ~Y~ wWWWw(_)\ (\| {{{}} | | || / / {{}}} Y \| @@@@ (_)#(_) \| (___) | \| /~Y~ \ \||/ /\\|~Y~ \|/ | \ \/ /(_) |/ |/ Y \|/ |//\|/ jgs\ `\\//`,.\|/|//.|/\\|/\\|,\|/ //\|/\|.\\\| // \|\\ |/,\|/ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >Little Wonders Little stones make big mountains, Little steps can cover miles, Little acts of loving-kindness Give the world it's biggest smiles...
