I was a new teacher with a secondary science degree, desperate for a job. I finally found one in a parochial school in a small town of 1,300 people teaching elementary geography, math and some science. I didn't fit in with the other young lay teachers who were into the party scene. My closest friend during those school days was a sixty-year-old nun who taught remedial reading, which tells you what my social life was like. In the days before school started, I put potted plants on the windowsills. On my first day of teaching, Leslie, a fourth grader who was sitting near the window, pulled plants out of the pots. After I moved him to a different seat, he proceeded to spread his entire bottle of glue over his desk and then spread chalk dust on it. And that was just the first morning! It was an ominous sign of things to come. I found that I spent eighty-five per cent of my energy disciplining and fifteen per cent imparting knowledge. Of course there were serious students who did well, but others worked hard to push the limits. At night I went home exhausted, often near tears. I felt lonely, missing my friends back in the city. Whatever gave me the idea I wanted to teach? And then there was Matthew. A fourth grader, Matthew had terrible spelling and almost illegible handwriting. He was getting poor grades in most of his classes. The other teachers labeled him "low ability." But in my geography class he always got A's. He studied hard, and always raised his hand in class. After school Matthew would come into my classroom to dust erasers or empty the wastepaper basket, while I was correcting papers and straightening the classroom for the next day. "Why do you come in to visit me?" I asked him one night. "Because at home there are too many kids, and no one listens to me," was his reply. As I got to know him, I understood his situation. His father had four or five children and then was widowed. He remarried and now had a second family of six, with Matthew near the middle. At times, Matthew talked about his philosophy of life, his family, and his view of God and the world. His chatter was like sunshine on a cloudy day. One time when he came to see me, he said, "Miss Ausmus, the kids are saying that you and Mr. D. like each other." "Matthew, Mr. D. is a nice man and we both teach some of the same students. We talk to each other about teaching. He is not my boyfriend, and it's not something the children should be talking about anyway." Thinking a minute, he said, "How do people keep from having babies?" I was tacking Christmas decorations up on a corkboard and almost fell off my chair. "Uh... Matthew, I think the wastebasket needs to be emptied. Could you do that for me please?" Another time he said, "Will you wait for me so I can marry you when I grow up?" "Sorry, Matthew, but that won't work," I responded sympathetically. "I'm fourteen years older than you are now, and I will still be fourteen years older when you are grown." Oh, the logic of a nine year old. When my birthday arrived, his mother made me a cake and delivered it after school. As Matthew was carrying it up the steps, he tripped, dropping the cake. I found him in tears, covered with white fluffy frosting. I assured him that bringing me a cake was very, very special, whether I was able to eat it or not. So instead of making another cake, his mother invited me to their home for a meal and I got to know his delightful family. After my second year of teaching, it was time to move on. I said "goodbye" to Matthew and his family. Years passed and in 1992, I went back to the little town to visit. Not much had changed in the twenty years I had been gone. Matthew's parents still lived in the same house. His mother told me that Matthew had graduated from college, married and was working at a good job. "Janet," she said, "Thanks for all the time you took encouraging Matthew. You taught him to believe in himself. You are the reason he went to college." Those words both surprised and gratified me. I had made a difference in the life of a young boy. But I wonder... did Matthew ever know the difference he made in mine? -- Janet Seever ___________________________________________ Living in Calgary, Alberta, with her husband and two adult children, Janet writes for Word Alive magazine. When satan tells you to worry, God has the opposite in mind. He wants you to trust him and to experience His peace on a daily basis. How do we gain and retain the true peace of God? 1. Recognize your dependence is on God. Take responsibility for your actions, but let God have the reins to your life. 2. Pray. The enemy cannot defeat you when you are on your spiritual knees before God in prayer. This is the true pathway to unshakable peace. 3. Trust God, when thoughts of fear invade your mind. Tell the Lord what you are feeling and claim His presence as your protection and shelter. 4. Focus only on God. Don't cling to negative thoughts. Set the focus of your heart on God and His possibilities. You can live life to the fullest because Christ is alive in you and all things are under His feet. He is in control. He is on the throne. STORY NUMBER ONE Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal manoeuvring kept Big Al out of jail for a long time. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified. Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street .. But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a clipping from a magazine. It read: "The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still." __---__ ______ / ___\_ o O O _( )__ /====(_____\___---_ o _( )_ | \ (_ AI-YA!!!! ) | |@ (_ Shot _) \ ___ / (__ Again!__) \ __----____--_\____(____\_____/ (______) ==|__----____--______| / / \____/)_ / ______) / | | | _| | ______\______________|______ / * * \ /_____________*____*___________\ / * * \ /________________________________\ / * \ /__________________________________\ | | |________________________| | | |________________________| STORY NUMBER TWO World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenceless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet. Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft. This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honour. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honor. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2. SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER? Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son. (Pretty cool, huh?) --- ...Yes it is! Thanks Geniann! By Bob Perks "Daddy, put me on your shoulders and let me touch Grandma's hand!" the little girl said. Daddy bent down, turned her around, and lifted her high above his head until she was safely positioned on his shoulders. "I can see tomorrow up here, Daddy," she said. "You can?" he asked. "What does it look like?" he questioned her. "Just like today, but more pretty!" she giggled. "Now hold on, Jenny. I'm going up on top of this hill. When I tell you to, stretch your arms way up and you can touch her hand." He carefully walked up on top of the small hill just behind the bench I was sitting on. The softball fans sit there each evening during the spring and summer watching the local players compete. But today this hill served a higher purpose. For this is a spot where memories are made. This is a moment between parent and child that gets filed away in memories for tomorrows yet to come. Perhaps when this young girl will hold her babe high upon her shoulders and together they will reach for Grandpa's hand, just like when she was a child. He came down to where I was seated. His daughter played nearby. Her Daddy told me afterwards that Jenny was very close to his Mom. She died a few months ago. "Jenny said she wanted to hold hands with Grandma like she always did. I told her Grandma was in heaven, out of reach," he said. "Jenny told me that heaven is in tomorrow. If she climbed way up high she could see it and touch Grandma's hand." "Why did she say that Heaven was in tomorrow?" I asked. "Well, the last time she saw Grandma, she told Jenny that one day soon she would go to heaven. Of course Jenny wanted to know when. Mom said 'Maybe tomorrow, Jenny. She died two days later." "So, then, heaven is in tomorrow," I added. "So does she feel Grandma's hand?" "Yes, very much so. In fact..." he paused when his daughter came running up to him. "I'll be right there, Jenny." Jenny is such a beautiful child. You look at her and think "buttons and bows" like a little girl in a story book. Her Daddy continued. "One day when we did this, she stretched out her arms and said, "Daddy, I can feel her hand!" Of course I played along and asked if it were soft like I remember." He stopped for a moment. Shook his head and looked down. I guess the memory of Mom was still very much alive in him. "She then said, 'Yes, Daddy. She has a ring with four colors on it." I couldn't believe what she said. I asked her to tell me again. She described it as best she could for a young child." "Did she remember a ring that Grandma always wore?" I asked. "No. That's what amazed me. You see that ring was her Mother's ring that we gave her. Each colored stone represented one of her children. She couldn't wear it for year's because of her arthritis." Once again he stopped to gain some composure. "We placed it on her finger when she died. We had it cut to fit her." "Could Jenny have seen it then?" I asked. "No. We decided not to permit Jenny at the funeral viewing. She was much too young to understand." "So, Jenny never saw the ring?" I asked. "No, not until that day. When she saw Heaven in tomorrow." Jenny came rushing over and Dad and I said our goodbyes. I thought a lot about this today. I asked myself a hundred times. So I'll ask you. Based on who you are. Knowing more about you than anyone else. Having whatever faith you may have in yourself, your God. Can you see "Heaven in tomorrow?" If you believe just reach up right now and touch it. Jenny did. "I wish you enough!" The temptation is to fly by your instincts, or, as aviators say, "by the seat of your pants." But as any pilot will tell you, that's a prescription for disaster. If you rely on your feelings and instincts, you become disoriented, thinking the plane is going up when it's actually going down. Thankfully, the instrument panel is set to magnetic north and can be trusted every time. Letting your instruments guide you, even when it feels like they're wrong, helps ensure safety in the storm. We get help from the control tower too. We all face storms that threaten to confuse and disorient us. It may be a call from the doctor's office, a friend who has betrayed you, or a shattered dream. Those are the times to be especially careful. When you are blinded by life's disappointments, don't trust your instincts. Flying by the seat of your pants in the storms of life can lead to despair, confusion, and vengeful responses that make matters worse. God wants to guide you, and His Word is packed with wisdom and insights for living. His "Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Ps. 119:105). Where He leads is always right! So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was that chill which only fear can put in you. He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson." Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she ro lled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn't thank him enough for coming to her aid. Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw s omeone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, "And think of me." He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight. A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn't erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan . After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: "You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you." Under the napkin were four more $100 bills. Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard.... She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, "Everything's going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson." -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment Feather Painting Art http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/feather.html Awww Animals 4 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/animals4.html VOLKNER MOBIL RV! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/rv.html Hand Painting Art http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hpaint.html Our Valuable Anchor http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/ouranchor.html Are Angels Real http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/BibleStudy/angelsreal.html Signs You're Having A Bad Day http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/badday.html Chinese Olympic Cuisine http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/olympic.html Wild Bear Farm http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/wildbearfarm.html -<>- >From Our Friend PatDeE :) He sent us a cute one we have here... I was a Marine being deployed for seven months to Iraq, given leave to come home before going to the desert. It's an 18-hour flight from Okinawa to the U.S. I had to catch a different flight in Houston, Texas to Miami, my destination. There was a delay in Houston, so with a couple spare hours, I decided to grab something to eat. After eating, I stopped at the USO (United Service Organization) to see if there were any Service members heading my direction. I hoped to find someone to chat with during the flight, especially if they were a Marine, or had been in combat. After about an hour at the USO I headed toward my gate. When I got there I sat down in the waiting area, and decided to call my dad about picking me up in Miami. Then I realized my cell phone was missing. I looked everywhere, including the bathroom, restaurant and the USO. Having no luck, I used the payphone. I called my dad and asked him to cancel my account because I'd lost my phone. We share an account because he and my family want to be able to talk to me anytime. My dad asked that I not worry, we'd just get a new phone once I got home. After our conversation, I made my way on board the aircraft with disappointment -- I'd lost all my friends' phone numbers, which wouldn't be easy to get back. The flight was about to close its doors so I walked to the rear of the aircraft to get seated. Two gentlemen were already seated in the same aisle, so I stowed my belongings and sat down. Not even a minute later a flight attendant walked up and asked if my name was Angel. I looked at her, and asked Why? She asked if I'd lost my phone and was the phone she held mine? I looked at her, looked at the phone and just couldn't believe it. I mean, I am in Houston International Airport that houses many different airlines, serving tens of thousands of customers daily. When you lose something like a phone at a place like that, it's bound to be gone forever. She said a gentleman picked up my phone and saw a Marine logo on it, then scrolled down to my dad's number. He called my dad, got my name and flight number, then took time off of his busy travel schedule and proceeded to the gate. He gave my phone to the flight attendant to return to me. That phone was my only way of getting hold of everyone I care about, to be able to see them before leaving to combat, which at the time I thought was the last time. That stranger did me a huge favor that day in Texas, and I am very thankful, even to this day. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: _ | (-' ______|_ ... ) | ===== ___ __|__ ))) < \ ( /- . | (((( / \'. <@>, _(>_\ ______| |"____) \ ./ \/ ( .__ - - _____. _ /\ _|_\ | \ | / ___ _ __( ' / / _\| '. .( | \__) _/_/ /-.-\ __|___ |'-, | /__ __\ | |-' __|___ /..___..\ ____ | / / \ \ | | ____|_ ) / '. ) __|_____|__ / ) )| | | .--. After they had walked around the Egyptian mummy section, Paul asked, "Did they wrap the daddies, too?" - Annie O of the United Kingdom Here's another one from Annie (whose children are now nearly 31 and 32). Little Kerry gazed up at a plane in the sky which was leaving a long, white vapor trail. In awe she asked, "Does it pull ALL that?" Tina tells about Cameron, a child she cared for. He was 3 at the time and eating an ice cream cone. Tina's husband asked him to hurry up and eat it. Cameron said, "Mr. Darren, you don't eat it. You wick-it (lick it)!" - Tina Williamson of Vicksburg, Mississippi When Betty's daughter (now 41) was four they lived in a rural area in Tennessee. A lot of their neighbors had gardens, so Bettina decided she wanted to have a garden and grow some corn. Betty took her to a feed and seed store to purchase seeds. Bettina plopped her money on the counter and announced to the salesman that she wanted to buy some seeds so she could grow corn in her garden. The salesman asked, "What kind of corn do you want to grow, young lady?" She gave it some thought and replied, "Corn on the cob!" - Betty Abbe of DeSoto, Texas. ,-===-. ,-. /=,(o).=\ \ /==|o_0|==\ \(===\ - /===) \`=.=|J|=,=',-. Jeremy, 4, asked his mother why she was going to church one Sunday afternoon. She replied, "I'm going to choir practice." Jeremy excitedly replied "Wow! For instance, if they say "No TV for you tonight," then he will say, "No TV for YOU tonight!" His mother has tried to set down a rule that when toys are not put away at the end of the day, she has the right to take away the toy for a set period of time. One day, she noticed that Jeremy had, yet again, left a bag of marbles scattered all over the living room floor. As she cleaned them up, she angrily told Jeremy, "That's it! You're losing your marbles for a week." He responded with "No, YOU'RE losing YOUR marbles!" Jennifer and her husband couldn't keep from breaking out in laughter! Lena works as a personal trainer. After coming to work with her mother all her life, Lena's 5-year-old narrowed her mother's career down to this: "Mommy, people's rear ends are the size of what they sit on. If they lay in bed all day, it's the size of a mattress. If they sit all day, it's the size of a couch cushion. If they run, then they don't have one because they worked their rear ends off!" - Lena Hunt Mabra of Blue Springs, Missouri .sSSSSSSSs sSS=""^^^"s /\ , / \_\_\|_/_) /';; /| \\\/.-. .-./ / \;| /. \,S' - - | / -.;| | '.SS _| ; ; '-.;\, |'-.SS\ __ /S | _ ';\\. \' SSS\_____/SS | '- ';\\. \_SSS[_____]SS \ '--.-';;-. __SSS/\ SSS \ .--' ';;'.=SSS`\\_\_SSS `._ .-'` _';;..=.=.=.\.=\ ;-._-' _.;\.=.=.=.|.=| , _.-' `"=._ ;\=.=__/__/ )\ .'` __ ".;|.=.=.=./ (_\ .-` '. | \/=.=.=/` /\\ \-,| |.--'| / \`, // \ | | | ( (__) ) _.-'--, \ | | '--, ;----' -'--,__}}} \ '--, __}}} jgs \_________}}} \___}}} When Lena's children were age 2 and 3 she tried to teach them about their conscience. "Kids, do you ever get a feeling deep inside that tells you to do or not to do something?" she questioned as they looked at her with eyes that seemed larger than the plates that were holding their snacks. Then Lena tried another approach and said, "Chaz, do you understand what Mommy is talking about?" He thought, circled his eyeballs several times, then shrugged his shoulders. Lena looked at her daughter and she, too, had a blank stare. As Lena continued her attempt to explain "conscience," her daughter exhaled a huge sigh of impatience and yelled, "I know, I know.
