As I sat in the theater alone (my husband is out of town for two days), I couldn't help but think about my own history of brain surgery to remove a tumor that was thought to be cancerous, and that removal of it may cause a stroke during surgery. The scene in the movie that really hit home with me was when, in the pre-surgical room, the family was present until the last second before he was taken away. This is a moment of panic for everyone. As I sat in the theater watching this family and patient clinging to each other, I realized that I had never told my family how very afraid I was after leaving them behind in that room. Though the surgical team was very pleasant and attentive, they were also necessarily pre-occupied and sterile, leaving me to fend for myself emotionally. I lay there worrying about waking up with severe disability, or maybe not waking up at all. I needed someone to be holding me until I was asleep. I really did, but I never told anyone. I was the mother of three toddlers at the time. My doctor advised me to get all of my affairs in order prior to surgery. I wrote letters to each of my children, to be read if they had to grow up without me. Our oldest son was 4 years old, our only daughter was 2, and our youngest son was 11 months old. I felt that I had to be strong for them -- I had to be sure that my kids weren't afraid. I couldn't show my fears, I thought I had to be in "mommy mode" until the very end. It's no secret that a patient and family are desperately afraid at these times. What hit me at this moment during the movie is that, in all these years since then, I never told anyone how afraid I was. I suddenly felt as though I had missed an important step in the grieving process of my own trauma. Those few moments in the surgical suite, before drugged induced sleep, are cold and lonely and downright scary no matter how old you are. So, there I sat in the theater, sobbing uncontrollably for not having let anyone know that I really wasn't the brave little warrior that I had pretended to be. It doesn't matter that I was already a mother at the time. It doesn't matter that I am now 26 years post-op and in good health. What matters is that when I came home from the theater, I emailed my family about it and then cried on the phone about it with my husband. I got it all out, finally. Gosh, I feel so good, now that I've told everyone! -- Mary Jane West-Delgado __________________________________________________ Mary Jane West-Delgado has been published on Heartwarmers twice before with "Cheerleader Mom" and "Wearing 9/11." But from web searches to videos, they all wish to destroy Christian and Conservative web sites and platforms by making them go broke taking away their internet standing, their rankings, shadow banning or even removing their ability to monetize by showing ads on their forums! After being with them for over 12 years, my website was kicked off of having Google ads for violating their policy which they wouldn't specify exactly when or how. They just said I had 'illegal' traffic. Nothing I said mattered. So they took away my main source of income to support my website. They even took away an entire month's earnings! That was late last year. I had been noticing that since 2012, that my traffic and revenue was being limited. My website provider said I had much more traffic than my so called 'profit partner' was reporting to me. They took traffic away from me which in website jargon means money. Over the years instead of the website growing as it should have been, it was decreasing in traffic. No matter how much we were advertising it on social media platforms. I even had a firm helping to promote it. When Big Tech can't limit them enough to shut them down, then they demonetize them! There is no way for us 'small potato' websites to fight them so they get away with doing about anything they want to. Even if illegal. Many Christian and Conservative sites have gone down because of their bias against them. Only ones like mine where I am too much into God to be shut down by them, stay afloat. I won't let them intimidate me into removing my website off the internet. When they can't limit us Conservative or Christian websites enough to shut them down, then they demonetize us by doing whatever they can to steal our revenue needed to support it! I see others with millions of viewers being able to make a difference and fight back against their injustice and it makes me smile that someone is able to do something against these global giant tech companies. I just pray that we all can get justice for their evil bias against us. I also am praying for a place where small websites can be hosted on a fair platform with monetizing for them to be able to stay afloat and give the public the kind of variety God wants us to have. I always say that 'variety is the spice of life'. You see it in God's creation. So many different creatures, plants and things. How boring life would be without these! Think of only one dog breed. Or only one bird. Or only one race of people. Or only one plant, one fish, or only one season! How boring! So why would we want to settle for less? God likes us to have a choice. Even when it comes to Him. We are given a choice to choose God thru His son Jesus Christ... John 14: [6] Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. Or we can choose Satan and his ways by worshiping him directly or by worshiping other gods or by worshiping nothing. Like the devil, the left likes to remove our choices by only allowing what agrees with their own predigests and agenda. They figure if people cannot see the other side's views, then they cannot choose to side with them. Limiting access to the other side is how they can control and dominate people. The less variety of choice, in their mind, the better. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' See this Bible teaching for more on variety... "This is a simple, but important, Biblical principal that you need to know. In my life, I have had to master this principle to survive. The adversary is constantly on my tail because of this web site. It often makes life exciting and keeps me spiritually sharp and it keeps me moving. Plus I get a chance to hammer his face into the dirt. “Greater is he that is in us” – “more than conquerors” we are. That’s what the Word says. Do you believe it? Believing appropriates – it is required of every born again believer that he or she believes and acts upon the Word. If you say that you just believe, but you never ACT on your believing, that is mental ascent and you will receive the consequences of that mental ascent. "Let all things be done decently and in order." – I Corinthians 14: 40 Where? In the Church of the Body of Christ to which you and I belong. If you were to put order to believing, it would simply be believe and act. Now, as you believe and act on the rightly divided Word of God, and you keep the same routines in your life, it can be said that your every move is predictable. Right? Now who is the one whose ministry is to steal, kill, and destroy? It’s in John 10:10a. No, I’m not quoting it. You need to research the Word on your own and make it your own. Otherwise you become a spiritual hitchhiker living off the teachings of others and that will only lead to spiritual failure. So I am trying to help you to prevent that. When Satan can predict your every move, he is going to set a trap for you. And watch your confessions. He CANNOT read your thoughts unless you tell him what you’re thinking. Keep important decisions or plans to yourself. That means don’t tell anyone. Why? Because when you voice something, you let the world know what you are going to do and then the adversary prepares to destroy your plans. Sound familiar? It’s simple so let’s not make it complicated." Read The Rest Here: The Importance of Variety http://www.absolutebiblestudy.com/Basics/The_Importance_of_Variety.htm I smiled reading this as I remembered President Trump saying how he was not going to voice what he was planning to do against ISIS like Obama often did. He said he didn't want the enemy to know his plans. He, with our great military leaders and soldiers, defeated ISIS land holdings in just two years where Obama had let ISIS take them over and said we'd just have to get used it. President Trump is our US Commander and Chief. He directs our troops and all our military strength. As Christians our Commander and Chief is Christ Jesus. He directs us against our spiritual enemy. We pray God that Christ will continue to direct our President against our country's enemies. I see people on FB saying that religious leaders and people of faith who are seen praying for and/or laying their hands on President Trump are being deceived. That they should not be supporting him. That is hogwash and just more of the devil's lies! Why? Because it goes against the Word of God! When something goes against the Word of God, you know it is the works of the devil. Plain and simple. Don't be fooled by Satan's smoke and mirrors. The bible calls for us to support our leaders: 1 Tim.2: [1] I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; [2] For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. [3] For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior; President Trump humbly welcomes all prayers by faith leaders and rightly he should! I love how in every rally of his, he is not ashamed to give God the glory by referring to keeping God strong in our country. He fully supports religious freedom and proudly proclaims it! We were still so new then. "Do what?" "Know even before I do, what I'm gonna say?" "Oh that," I replied, staring intently at my feet. "Uhm? it's a little hard to explain." Hard to explain? It's like the Grand Canyon of explaining. Although it's a simple idea, the reality is harder to accept. Especially if you don't come from the same chaotic background that I do. So, here goes nothing. I disparage to call what I have a gift. Although it must seem a gift to some. To me a gift implies something better. Something nice. This was born of desperation. Survival. Things not so nice. A self imposed, self-taught knack. I coined it `seeing while blind', in one of my cannier moments. Right along with learning to tie my shoes, I learned how to judge a room. Other kids were taught to brush their teeth. I was taught to sense the atmosphere. Understand nuances of behavior. In essence, to read people and situations at a glance. Not that my parents were aware of what they were instilling in me. Oh no. They were too busy swiping and crashing and breaking and smashing. See, you had to know what you walking into, or it could take your head off. Sometimes I pretended that I was Native American reading trail sign or deer droppings. It made it seem more like play. But this was no game. Watching for spore of broken cutlery. Footprints on bruised egos. Which way the blood led. If you didn't sum up a situation correctly and quickly, you could get hurt. Heap big trouble white man. Now, it seems to be second nature and I use it without even knowing. I used it with co-workers. Friends. Acquaintances. Dance buddies. Partners. Dogs. If someone's holding his breath, or his/her shoulders are canted at a certain angle, or lips held tightly together. These are all signs that I can read like an open book. It's as plain to me as if someone has written on your forehead. How you operate. What your motives are. What you'll do and why. Trusting, liking or disliking a person instantly. More often than not, this `seeing while blind' ability of mine, is right on the money. A blessing and a curse. My husband thought I was psychic. Our realtor thought I was nuts ("What's the matter with THIS one? Should I tell her someone died in here?). Maybe I am, a little. So, how do I do that? Will you believe me if I say I'm reading you like poetry? That everything you haven't said is shouting to be heard? How you can't hide the fact that you're depressed or sad or angry or in a snit? Why I can touch you and feel your pain? Can you comprehend seeing while blind? Ellen Lane: sianbabs@... --- ...Just what I was thinking about before this... We've all heard how Jonah, wanting to escape God, hired a ship. A storm came up and Jonah was thrown overboard. He was swallowed by a whale, only to be belched out a few days later on a beach far away. Joppa, the town where this story begins is where Jonah went to hire the boat. Now known as Jaffa, the town has been incorporated into Tel Aviv, Israel's capital. During a recent trip to the Holy Land, I visited Jaffa. It sits on a sandy promontory on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, where blue-green waters wash against the rocky shore. Once a busy port city, Jaffa, which means beautiful, has been visited by Egyptian and Phoenician sailors and been under the rule of Richard the Lionhearted, Napoleon, and Turkish sultans. I was thrilled to be touring a place so rich in history. Though I knew better than to leave the others in the tour group, I wandered off by myself, going up and down many steps. Some lead to narrow streets with the most unusual street signs. Local artists have used their imaginations and made bronze signs, decorated with small whales and other designs and set in the stones of the buildings. The aroma of delicious pastries did its best to lure me inside the bakeries. As I walked past them, I forced myself to resist the temptation and continued exploring Jaffa. After a few more turns I came upon a statue of a whale. Several giggling children climbed on top of it and hung by their fingers, swinging their legs back and forth from the tail. I snapped several shots and enjoyed the shade of a palm tree. The sea was at my back. I could hear the waves as they rushed in and crashed against the sea walls. I left the children playing on the statue and climbed another flight of steep steps. At the top I discovered a museum. Though the sea air felt good as it caressed my face, I appreciated the air-conditioning inside. When I left the museum I walked down a narrow, winding road and was surprised to find myself once again standing in front of the whale statue. The children and their mothers had disappeared and I stood alone gazing at the Smiling Whale. It looked comical with that grin on its face, but sadly, it was rather weather-beaten. I took a few more pictures and sat on a wall wondering how I ended up back here. I must have gone in a big circle! Nearby, pansies nodded as the sea breeze blew between the stone buildings. I backtracked up the winding road, starting to feel tired from climbing so many steep inclines. I saw gardens full of bougainvillea and roses. The further I walked, the more I noticed the air filled with a tangy, sweet scent. I turned a corner and discovered an orchard of fragrant orange trees. They smelled lovely! Not being able to resist, I took a few more photographs and headed down another narrow road. I couldn't believe it when I ended up standing in front of the whale statue. What was going on here? "I'm lost," I sighed. Not ready to give up, I went down one road and then another, searching for a way back to my tour bus. I climbed up so many flights of stone steps that my legs were shaking like they were made of jelly. No matter what way I went, the roads always lead back to the Smiling Whale. I collapsed on a patch of grass and looked at the big, bronze fish. "Is that why you're smiling? You're getting quite a kick out of this, aren't you? You probably think it's funny that people get lost. Why do all roads lead to you?" Tired as I was, I found humor in the moment and laughed along with the whale. I glanced at my watch and noticed the time had passed quicker than I thought. I had one hour until the bus left for our hotel in Tel Aviv. I'd gone several ways and always ended up back here, so I tried one more path, heading down towards the sea. And that's exactly where it leads - to the sea. I stood on the crumbling wall, noticing several large rocks jutting out of the water. "That's the rock Andromeda was chained to," a voice said. I turned to see a boy about ten years old. "Andromeda?" I had never heard this story before. "It's a Greek legend. Andromeda was going to be sacrificed to a monster and she was chained to that rock," he said. I squinted and noticed there was something made of rusty iron sticking out of the rock. "Perseus rescued her just as the monster came to eat her." "Why, that's a fascinating story," I replied, making a mental note to look up more about it when I got back home to the U.S.A. "Thank you for sharing it with me. What is your name?" "Jacob." I had an idea. "Say, Jacob, do you know the way back to Simon the Tanner's house?" I knew this historical site was near the area where my bus was parked. He smiled at me and nodded yes. "Will you take me there? I seem to be lost." He started running up the hill, waving at me to follow. I chuckled to myself when we came back to the whale statue, as I knew we would. "Have you seen the Smiling Whale statue?" he asked. "Yes! Several times," I answered. We walked past a row of artist studios. I wanted to take a closer look at the paintings, but was afraid to let Jacob out of my sight. He pointed ahead. "There's Simon the Tanner's house." I slipped some money into his hand. Politely, he refused it, but I insisted. I knew my way back to the bus and felt relief when I climbed on board with the others. They were chatting away about the history of Jaffa, the sea, and the artwork they'd purchased. I was envious. I'd spent so much time wandering around lost that I'd not had a chance to buy anything. "Oh, did anyone see the whale statue? I looked and looked but couldn't find it," Cindy, one of my fellow tourists asked. I started to laugh out loud. "I did," I said, raising my hand. "We've got plenty of time. Would you take me to it?" Cindy pleaded. I laughed so hard that I had tears rolling down my face. "Sorry!" I wiped my eyes. "Just pick a road and follow it. All roads lead to the Smiling Whale." She gave me a strange look and disappeared. "Well, if she's got enough time then so do I," I said. I jumped off the bus and ran to the closest art studio, making careful note of the way I came. Satisfied with my purchase, I walked toward the bus. When I reached the bottom of a flight of stairs, I was horrified to see I stood next to the whale statue again! I couldn't believe it! How did I do that? I was about ready to cry, knowing I'd never find my way back to the bus in time, when Cindy called my name. "What are you doing back here? Oh well, since you're here, will you take a picture of me with the whale?" she begged. I took a few steps back and when I looked through the viewfinder, I could swear the whale winked at me. I snapped the shot and followed Cindy back to the bus. She knew exactly where to go and it took less than a minute to get there. "How did you find your way?" I asked, dumbfounded. "It was no bother. I simply followed the road," she answered, wondering what the big deal was. To this day, whenever I hear the story of Jonah and the whale, I think of Jaffa and I can still see the Smiling Whale statue winking at me! A seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. One morning, they were eating breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal. While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, “I hope he doesn't come over here..” But sure enough, the man did come over to their table. “Where are you folks from?” he asked in a friendly voice. “Oklahoma,” they answered. “Great to have you here in Tennessee,” the stranger said. “What do you do for a living?” “I teach at a seminary,” he replied. “Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you? Well, I've got a really great story for you.” And with that, the gentleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple. The professor groaned and thought to himself, “Great.. Just what we need.... Another preacher story!” The man started, “See that mountain over there?" he said, pointing out the restaurant window. "Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up, because every place he went, he was always asked the same question, 'Hey boy, who's your daddy?' "Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store, people would ask the same question, 'Who's your daddy?' "When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question, 'Who's your daddy?' "But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast that he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd. Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and asked him, 'Son, who's your daddy?' Now everyone would finally know the answer to the question. "This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the holy spirit could give, said the following to that scared little boy. 'Oh, Wait a minute! I know who you are! I see the family resemblance now. You are a child of God!' "With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said, 'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.' "The boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person. He was never the same again. Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd just tell them, 'I'm a Child of God.''' The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said, “Isn't that a great story?” The professor responded that it really was a great story! As the man turned to leave, he said, “You know, if that new preacher hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I probably never would have amounted to anything!” And he walked away. The seminary professor and his wife were stunned. He called the waitress over and asked her, "Do you know who that man was that just left that was sitting at our table?” The waitress grinned and said, “Of course. Everybody here knows him. That's Ben Hooper. He's governor of Tennessee!” Someone in your life today could use a reminder that they're one of God's Children! “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of God stands forever.” ~~Isaiah 40:8 YOU'RE ONE OF GOD'S CHILDREN!!! HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!! Keep this going. You have no idea which one of your e-mail buddies could use a little hope today. You know, being a website host, I often have to vet stories. I was thinking that the last line of this story would have to be fixed as it probably wasn't factual - The line that read, "That's Ben Hooper. He's governor of Tennessee". I work hard to verify things. So I did my fact checking and lo and behold I was stunned and quite pleased to find out that this was a true story! Love It! Russell had an entry-level job that didn't pay much, we had college loans, and had made some stupid choices with credit cards, so we had lots of debt to deal with. Our son was born that summer, and I had to stop working and stay at home with him, which only compounded the financial squeeze. We were living in an apartment in Evanston, Illinois, a moderately affluent suburb north of Chicago. We got involved socially with a large group of couples of various ages, some from our church and some connected with my husband's job at Northwestern University. They all had children, we shared many common values, and they gave us helpful hints about raising our son. This active group of people went many places and did many things together. We enjoyed being with them. Even though we often couldn't afford to go with the group, they always made us feel welcome when we came. Toward the end of that first summer they planned a picnic, and invited us. I asked what I could contribute. "Oh, bring some potato chips," my friend said. I figured there wouldn't be much food -- just hot dogs, chips, and lemonade -- and was relieved that I didn't have to spend more than a few dollars on the event. I bought two large bags of the least expensive brand of potato chips I could find. However, when we got to the state park, I found a veritable feast laid out. Heaps of chicken and watermelon, big bowls filled with homemade salads of all kinds. Even homemade ice cream and cake. There we were with our two bags of potato chips. I felt mortified and thought about leaving. I told a close friend that I was terribly embarrassed to have brought so little. "Oh nonsense," she said. "In a few years it'll be your turn to bring the chicken." Today Russell and I are starting to think about retirement and our son is grown. The century has turned and it's the year 2000. Yet I still remember that picnic and how our friends made us feel included and valued for who we were -- not what we had. Their generosity stuck with me all these years, and it's shaped both my feelings about others and my behavior in helping them. We couldn't possibly pay back all the people who brought chicken for us when we were unable to afford it. We're scattered all across the country, and we've lost touch with them. But that's not the point. The chicken we enjoyed 32 years ago is a debt my husband and I owe -- and will always owe -- to the future. It's not an obligation to be paid back but rather a promise to pay forward. We still have lots of younger friends who have trouble making ends meet. Nowadays, we bring the chicken. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "Our decision to follow is not just daily; it is hourly; it is over and over and over. Ask yourself, 'Can I accept the fact that my decision to follow Jesus must be made time and time again, and for the rest of my life?'" - Kyle Idleman, from the excellent "Not a Fan" Small Groups DVD __ /_/\/\ \_\ / /_/ \ \_\/\ \ \_\/ unknown >Why Do You Follow? (Based on the excellent "Not a Fan" Small Groups DVD study by Kyle Idleman) "Sometimes in an effort to get as many people as possible to follow Jesus I have, with good intentions, made following Him sound as attractive and appealing as possible...I realized that I have been guilty of selling Jesus. And in emphasizing only the parts about Jesus that I thought people would like, and begging people to follow Him, I have unintentionally belittled Him...I'm sorry if I've ever cheapened Jesus or made it sound like we're doing Him a favor by choosing to follow." - Kyle Idleman Time for some honest self-examination & reflection: Why do you follow Jesus? What reasons honestly come to mind first? List them here mentally: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Do you find your reactions to be more about what Jesus offers you (i.e. forgiveness, answered prayer, eternal life) or what He is like (i.e. His flawless integrity, His bottomless love, His selfless sacrifice)? Do you find yourself interested in getting to know Jesus better - not only what He commands and not just His will for your life, but He Himself, His very personhood? If not, why not? "Fans want to follow Jesus closely enough to get all the benefits, but not so close that He calls them to sacrifice or surrender things that are important...If you're unsure if you're a fan or a follower, then ask yourself this: 'When was the last time my relationship with Jesus cost me something?'" - Kyle Idleman Did you hear about the bride that on her wedding day said to the preacher: "Can we just skip over the 'for richer or for poorer' section; I'm not ready to sign up for that." Or the groom that then said: "And can we cut the 'forsaking all others' bit? I don't want to tie myself down. I want to keep my options open." What have you found yourself tempted to say to Jesus: "Lord can we just skip ____________?" "And Jesus can we just cut out the ____________?" What does He reply? Can you honestly sing along with the words to this hymn today and genuinely mean them? "I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold; I'd rather be His than have riches untold; I'd rather have Jesus than houses or lands, I'd rather be led by His nail pierced hand. Than to be a king of a vast domain Or be held in sin's dread sway, I'd rather have Jesus than anything This world affords today. I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause; I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause; I'd rather have Jesus than world-wide fame, I'd rather be true to His holy name. He's fairer than lilies of rarest bloom; He's sweeter than honey from out of the comb; He's all that my hungering spirit needs, I'd rather have Jesus and let Him lead." (Hymn: "I'd Rather Have Jesus" written by Rhea F. Miller; tune by George Beverly Shea) None of this today is meant to condemn anyone, but these are tough questions we need to ask ourselves so we can work towards corrections where necessary.
