>Christmas 1979 - Mike Cashion
[edited]
It is a tradition that each year when the family gets together for
Christmas, I tell a story that relates to Christmas.
In 1979, I was managing a Wendy's in Port Richey Florida. Unlike
today, staffing was never a real problem, but I was searching for
someone to work 3 hours a day only at lunch.
I went thru all my applications and most were all looking for full
time or at least 20 hours per week. I found one however, buried at
the bottom of a four inch stack that was only looking for lunch
part time. His name was Nicky. Hadn't met him but thought I would
give him a call and see if he could stop by for an interview. When
I called, he wasn't in but his mom said she would make sure he
would be there.
At the accorded time, Nicky walked in. One of those moments when
my heart went in my throat. Nicky suffered from Downs Syndrome.
His physical appearance was a giveaway and his speech only
reinforced the obvious.
I was young and sheltered. Had never interacted on a professional
level with a developmentally disabled person. I had no clue what
to do, so I went ahead and interviewed him.
He was a wonderful young man. Great outlook. Task focused. Excited
to be alive. For only reasons God knew at that time, I hired him.
3 hours a day, 3 days a week to run a grill.
I let the staff know what to expect. Predictably the crew made sure
I got the message, "no one wants to work with a retard." To this
day I find that word offensive. We had a crew meeting, cleared the
air, and prepared for his arrival.
Nicky showed up for work right on time. He was so excited to be
working. He stood at the time clock literally shaking with
anticipation.
He clocked in and started his training. Couldn't multi task, but
was a machine on the grill. Now for the fascinating part.....
Back in that day, there were no computer screens to work from.
Every order was called by the cashier. It required a great deal of
concentration on the part of all production staff to get the order
right. While Nicky was training during his first shift, the
sandwich maker next to him asked the grillman/trainer what was on
the next sandwich. Nicky replied,"single, no pickle no onion." A
few minutes later it happened again. It was then that we
discovered Nicky had a hidden and valuable skill.
He memorized everything he heard! Photographic hearing! WHAT A
SKILL SET. It took 3 days and every sandwich maker requested to
work with Nicky. He immediately was accepted by the entire crew.
After his shift he would join the rest of his crew family,
Drinking Coke like it was water! It was then that they
discovered another Rainman-esque trait. Nicky was a walking/
talking perpetual calendar! With a perpetual calendar as a
reference, they would sit for hours asking him what day of the
week was December 22, 1847. He never missed. This uncanny trait
mesmerized the crew.
His mom would come in at 2 to pick him up. More times than not,
the crew would be back there with him hamming it up. As I went to
get him from the back, his mom said something I will never forget.
"Let him stay there as long as he wants. He has never been accepted
anywhere like he has been here." I excused myself and dried my
eyes, humbled and broken hearted at the lesson I just learned.
Nicky had a profound impact on that store. His presence changed a
lot of people. Today I believe with every fiber of my body that
Nicky's hiring was no accident. God's timing and will is perfect.
This Christmas, I hope we all understand what we are celebrating.
We are all like Nicky. We each have our shortcomings. We each have
our strong points. But we are all of value. God made us that way and
God doesn't make mistakes. Nicky certainly wasn't a mistake. He was
a valuable gift that I am forever grateful for.
We are celebrating the birth of the ONE that leveled the playing
field for all of us. God doesn't care if you are rich or poor,
republican or democrat or black or white. He doesn't care if your
chromosome structure is perfect. He doesn't care what level of
education you have attained.
He cares about your heart. He wants us all to love and appreciate
the gift HE gave us on Christmas, His son, the Savior, our
salvation. His Son that was born to die for our sins. To pay our
debt. To provide us a path for eternity.
So this Christmas, lets check our hearts. There is a little bit of
Nicky in all of us and I suspect there is a Nicky somewhere in your
life that is looking for the chance to be embraced. Thank God for
that. Thank God for His perfect gift, Christ Jesus.
Merry Christmas,
MC

>Reframing
“Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who
gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than
silver, and her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is
more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can
compare with her."1
When two freight trains collided, a young man by the
name of George Westinghouse designed a way to avoid a
repetition of the accident.
When George explained his idea, railroad executives
agreed with Commodore Vanderbilt who exclaimed, "Do you
mean to tell me that you expect to stop a train with
wind? I have no time to waste on. . .fools!"
Westinghouse was aware of the problem. If the air
failed there was no way to stop the train. But what he
did was change his framework of reference. He designed
heavy springs to hold the train brakes on all the time
and an air system to hold the brakes off. If the air
failed, the brakes would automatically engage and stop
the train.
By looking at the problem from a different viewpoint,
Westinghouse perfected the air brake--a system that was
adopted by the entire industry.
As the saying goes, "If we keep doing what we've always
done, we'll keep getting what we've always got, and
we'll keep feeling what we've always felt." In other
words, if we want to bring about change in our personal
life, in our family, in our business, in our church, or
in our nation, we need to look at things differently
and be prepared to make changes--sometimes drastic
changes! Because without change nothing ever changes.
Suggested prayer: "Dear God, what things in my life do
I need to look at differently and what changes do I
need to make today that will make my life more
effective for tomorrow? Thank You for hearing and
answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus Christ's name,
amen."

>The Tyranny of the Urgent
“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's
will for you in Christ Jesus."1
I don’t know what it is like for you (though I am
confident that the same is true for you) but oftentimes
it seems as if my life is controlled by the tyranny of
the urgent. That is, there never seems to be a day when
something unexpected comes up that needs attention …
something is broken around the house … a friend is in
need … and with all my computer, email and web work
there is a never-ending flow of problems that need
fixing.
Despite the stress that can come from the busyness of
life, every day I like to remind myself of, and daily
thank God for, all the incredible blessings in my life.
I constantly thank God that as a child my parents took
me to a church and Sunday school where I heard and
accepted the gospel. I thank God for health and
strength and the ability to work hard, for a roof over
my head, a comfortable bed to sleep in, for hot and
cold running water, a great church, loving friends, for
the incredible opportunity of being able to publish the
gospel worldwide, and most of all for a loving family
and for the wonderful privilege of being a part of
God’s family through no merit of my own. And I know
that all of these blessings from God are only the tip
of the iceberg of God’s never ending blessings.
Living with an attitude of gratitude turns my problems
into challenges and makes them infinitely small in
comparison to all the blessings I daily experience.
Suggested prayer: “Dear God, please open my eyes so
that I can clearly see all the incredible blessings You
have so freely given to me and may I always have a
grateful heart for these. For one more blessing I pray:
and that is that You will give me an eternal attitude
of gratitude. Thank You for hearing and answering my
prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus Christ’s name, amen."
1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV).

...I think we all can relate...
Many things hit us each day that are unexpected and require
our immediate attention. I suppose, one could think of them
as being 'tyrannical'. I just tend to take them as they come.
I look at them as opportunities that need to get done. Just
another step in my walk with Jesus. When I get grumpy over
being overworked, I have to stop, drop and roll.
Stop being grumpy, Drop the bad attitude and Roll with it
thanking God that I Am Able to do the things He wants me to
do. I am most thankful for what I am able to do because I
know that there are many who cannot do the most simplest
of things. I Thank God I can do!
People often complain about being bored - I'm never bored!
There are always things to do or pray about. People do drugs
or alcohol just to not be normal. They want to escape from
their normal life. I don't! I Thank God for my normal. I've
been way not normal and have had to fight to keep my sanity.
I've had to fight to recover from near death and get back to
being well and healthy - emotionally as well as physically! No
thanks on not being normal! I ALWAYS Thank God for my normal!
I love being able to think clearly, see clearly, breath deeply,
walk without pain, eat without pain and sleep without worry and
the list goes on and on and on.
Think of all the things in your life that you take for granted
and then think how bad it would be if the thief stole even one of
them away from you! We all have much to be thankful to God for!
All our normal things.

>A Time to Be Silent
A pilot had turned off his radio in order to elude the enemy, but
as he came across the channel, he turned it on again and began
turning the dial to find the proper frequency, which changed from
time to time.
His plane was almost out of petrol, and he was terrified of what
might happen if he ran out and did not find his way precisely
toward the goal he was seeking.
As he twiddled the dial, he broke out in perspiration. Finally,
he caught a faint signal and adjusted the dial. The signal came
in strong and clear.
He changed his flight path onto the signal and landed safely at
his airport.
We're all trying to do that in life. We're trying to pick up
those signals that tell us who we are, what direction we ought
to be headed, and where home is.
As we fiddle with the dial and adjust the signal receiver in our
lives, we begin to hear in the stillness and the quietness a
voice telling us where home is.
We are able to readjust our patterns and head homeward.
That's the promise of the text. If we will be still, we will know
that God is God; we will know which way to go toward God.
-- John Killinger
---
...Reminds me of this bible verse...
Pss.46
[10] Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among
the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

>AH, THERE YOU ARE
By: Joseph J. Mazzella
I misplaced my joy this morning. I woke up to find it missing
like a set of lost keys. I started looking for it everywhere. I
looked for it in the morning paper. It wasn’t there. I looked for
it in my books. It wasn’t there. I looked for it in some music. It
wasn’t there. I looked for it while I ate breakfast, got the kids
ready for school, and headed out the door this morning, but I
couldn’t find it anywhere.
When I finally got back home I decided to take a walk. I
thought that if I couldn’t find my joy then at least I could get
some exercise. The last leaves of Autumn were thickly covering the
ground. I walked for awhile on this beautiful, crunchy carpet and
breathed in the fresh, cool air. It was so peaceful and wonderful.
After walking for a bit I stopped and smiled. I suddenly knew where
to look. I glanced down and saw my joy peeking up at me from deep
inside my soul. It had been sitting there right next to my love
and God’s love just waiting for me to find it. "Ah, there you are,"
I said. Then I laughed at myself for not knowing where to look all
along.
It is amazing how we so often look for joy in every single
place except the only place where it can truly be found, within
ourselves. We are like a person running around searching for the
glasses that are perched on the top of his head. We need to stop
the search. We need to look deep into our souls and see the joy that
has been sitting there all along. It isn’t hidden and it isn’t hard
to find. It is there shining brightly right next to God’s love and
our love. It is just waiting for us to smile down and say, "Ah,
there you are."
Reach down and grab that joy today. Choose it, rejoice in it,
and live in it. Take it along with your love and God’s love and
share it with the world. And if you ever misplace it again remember
where to look for it first.

>Just Stay in the Race
When Cecil B. DeMille began working on the movie "Ben Hur", he
talked to Charlton Heston - the star of the movie - about the
all-important chariot race at the end. He decided that Heston
should actually learn to drive the chariot himself, rather than
just using a stunt double. Heston agreed to take chariot-driving
lessons to make the movie as authentic as possible.
Learning to drive a chariot with horses four abreast, however,
was no small matter. After extensive work and days of practice,
Heston returned to the movie set and reported to DeMille.
"I think I can drive the chariot all right, Cecil," said Heston,
"but I'm not sure I can actually win the race."
Smiling slightly, DeMille said, "Heston, you just stay in the
race, and I'll make sure you win."
Those are the words of God to everyone going through a time of
struggle in their lives... "My child, you just stay in the race,
and I'll make sure you win." Look for God's hand. If you cannot
see it in the event itself, look for it in the aftermath when you
are putting your life back together. I promise you, God's hand
will be there.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have
kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to
me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have
longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

WATCH: First Lady unveils 2020 Christmas decorations!
This year’s theme, “America the Beautiful,” pays tribute to the
majesty of our great country. From the traditional Gold Star Family
Tree to a gingerbread house replica of the White House—complete
with the West Wing, Executive Residence, East Wing, Rose Garden,
and First Ladies’ Garden—crafted from 275 pounds of dough, every
piece of this year’s decor was chosen and completed with care.
“Over the past four years I have had the honor to travel to some of
our nation’s most beautiful landmarks and meet some of the most
compassionate and patriotic American citizens,” the First Lady
said. “From coast to coast, the bond that all Americans share is an
appreciation for our traditions, values, and history, which were
the inspiration behind the decorations this year.”

>The Folded Napkin - A Truck Stop Story
If this doesn't light your fire, your wood is wet!
I try not to be biased, but I had my doubts about hiring Stevie.
His placement counselor assured me that he would be a good,
reliable busboy. But I had never had a mentally handicapped
employee and wasn't sure I wanted one. I wasn't sure how my
customers would react to Stevie.
He was short, a little dumpy with the smooth facial features and
thick-tongued speech of Down’s Syndrome. I wasn't worried about
most of my trucker customers because truckers don't generally
care who buses tables as long as the meatloaf platter is good and
the pies are homemade.
The ones who concerned me were the mouthy college kids traveling
to school; the yuppie snobs who secretly polish their silverware
with their napkins for fear of catching some dreaded 'truck stop
germ'; the pairs of white-shirted business men on expense accounts
who think every truck stop waitress wants to be flirted with. I
knew those people would be uncomfortable around Stevie so I
closely watched him for the first few weeks..
I shouldn't have worried. After the first week, Stevie had my
staff wrapped around his stubby little finger, and within a month
my truck regulars had adopted him as their official truck stop
mascot.
After that, I really didn't care what the rest of the customers
thought of him. He was like a 21-year-old in blue jeans and Nikes,
eager to laugh and eager to please, but fierce in his attention to
his duties. Every salt and pepper shaker was exactly in its place,
not a breadcrumb Or coffee spill was visible when Stevie got done
with the table.
Our only problem was persuading him to wait to clean a table until
after the customers were finished. He would hover in the background,
shifting his weight from one foot to the other, scanning the dining
room until a table was empty. Then he would scurry to the empty
table and carefully bus dishes and glasses onto his cart and
meticulously wipe the table up with a practiced flourish of his rag.
If he thought a customer was watching, his brow would pucker with
added concentration. He took pride in doing his job exactly right,
and you had to love how hard he tried to please each and every
person he met.
Over time, we learned that he lived with his mother, a widow who
was disabled after repeated surgeries for cancer. They lived on
their Social Security benefits in public housing two miles from the
truck stop. Their social worker, who stopped to check on him every
so often, admitted they had fallen between the cracks. Money was
tight, and what I paid him was probably the difference between
them being able to live together And Stevie being sent to a group
home. That's why the restaurant was a gloomy place that morning last
August, the first morning in three years that Stevie missed work.
He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester getting a new valve or
something put in his heart. His social worker said that people with
Downs Syndrome often have heart problems at an early age so this
wasn't unexpected, and there was a good chance he would come through
the surgery in good shape and be back at work in a few months.
A ripple of excitement ran through the staff later that morning
when word came that he was out of surgery, in recovery, and doing
fine.
Frannie, the head waitress, let out a war hoop and did a little
dance in the aisle when she heard the good news.
Bell Ringer, one of our regular trucker customers, stared at the
sight of this 50-year-old grandmother of four doing a victory
shimmy beside his table.
Frannie blushed, smoothed her apron and shot Bell Ringer a
withering look.
He grinned. 'OK, Frannie, what was that all about?' he asked.
'We just got word that Stevie is out of surgery and going to be
okay.'
'I was wondering where he was. I had a new joke to tell him. What
was the surgery about?'
Frannie quickly told Bell Ringer and the other two drivers sitting
at his booth about Stevie's surgery then sighed: 'Yeah, I'm glad
he is going to be OK,' she said. 'But I don't know how he and his
Mom are going to handle all the bills. From what I hear, they're
barely getting by as it is.'
Bell Ringer nodded thoughtfully, and Frannie hurried off to wait on
the rest of her tables. Since I hadn't had time to round up a
busboy to replace Stevie and really didn't want to replace him, the
girls were busing their own tables that day until we decided what
to do.
After the morning rush, Frannie walked into my office. She had a
couple of paper napkins in her hand and a funny look on her face.
'What's up?' I asked.
'I didn't get that table where Bell Ringer and his friends were
sitting cleared off after they left, and Pony Pete and Tony Tipper
were sitting there when I got back to clean it off,' she said.
'This was folded and tucked under a coffee cup.'
She handed the napkin to me, and three $20 bills fell onto my desk
when I opened it. On the outside, in big, bold letters, was
printed 'Something For Stevie'.
'Pony Pete asked me what that was all about,' she said, 'so I told
him about Stevie and his Mom and everything, and Pete looked at
Tony and Tony looked at Pete, and they ended up giving me this.'
She handed me another paper napkin that had 'Something For Stevie'
scrawled on its outside. Two $50 bills were tucked within its
folds. Frannie looked at me with wet, shiny eyes, shook her head
and said simply: 'Truckers!!'
That was three months ago. Today is Thanksgiving, the first day
Stevie is supposed to be back to work.
His placement worker said he's been counting the days until the
doctor said he could work, and it didn't matter at all that it
was a holiday. He called ten times in the past week, making sure
we knew he was coming, fearful that we had forgotten him or that
his job was in jeopardy.
I arranged to have his mother bring him to work. I then met them
in the parking lot and invited them both to celebrate his day back.
Stevie was thinner and paler, but couldn't stop grinning as he
pushed through the doors and headed for the back room where his
apron and busing cart were waiting
'Hold up there, Stevie, not so fast,' I said. I took him and his
mother by their arms. 'Work can wait for a minute. To celebrate
you coming back, breakfast for you and your mother is on me!'
I led them toward a large corner booth at the rear of the room.
I could feel and hear the rest of the staff following behind as
we marched through the dining room. Glancing over my shoulder, I
saw booth after booth of grinning truckers empty and join the
procession. We stopped in front of the big table. Its surface was
covered with coffee cups, saucers and dinner plates, all sitting
slightly crooked on dozens of folded paper napkins 'First thing you
have to do, Stevie, is clean up this mess,' I said. I tried to
sound stern.
Stevie looked at me, and then at his mother, then pulled out one of
the napkins. It had 'Something for Stevie' printed on the outside.
As he picked it up, two $10 bills fell onto the table.
Stevie stared at the money, then at all the napkins peeking from
beneath the tableware, each with his name printed or scrawled on it.
I turned to his mother. 'There's more than $10,000 in cash and
checks on that table, all from truckers and trucking companies that
heard about your problems.. 'Happy Thanksgiving.'
Well, it got real noisy about that time, with everybody hollering
and shouting, and there were a few tears, as well.
But you know what's funny? While everybody else was busy shaking
hands and hugging each other, Stevie, with a big, big smile on his
face, was busy clearing all the cups and dishes from the table.
Best worker I ever hired.
Plant a seed and watch it grow.
At this point, you can bury this inspirational message or forward
it, fulfilling the need!
If you shed a tear, hug yourself, because you are a compassionate
person.
Well.. Don't just sit there! Send this story on! Keep it going,
this is a good one!
Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take
without forgetting.

...Awww, yes, a tearjerker for sure! Thank You LouiseAu!

>A Mother's Prayer
(Author Unknown)
"Precious Heavenly Father,
Give me patience when little hands
tug at me with their many demands.
Give me gentle hugging arms
to help protect them from rebellions harm.
Give me wisdom from above
to teach these little ones of Your love.
Give me strength, Your love not to spare
that they may obey and live under Your care.
Give me a spirit . . . quiet and meek
let my words show kindness as I speak.
Give me the ability to teach from the heart
to help my children learn Your Word from the start.
Give me the words You'd have me say
to teach my children how to pray.
Give me time, special moments to share
that they may know, "Mommy really does care."
Give me hands that work willingly
a steadfast example that I may be.
Give me courage to stand in Your might
to teach my little ones to always do right.
Give me boldness to do all these and more
that I may not be ashamed when I stand at Your door.
Thank You Father,
In Jesus Christ's Name I pray, Amen."

>Under Control
(By Bayless Conley, taken from "Under Control" devotional -
bracketed text added by Chris Long)
There are way too many young Christians who are out of control in
their physical relationship with the opposite gender.
So, mom or dad, here is something you can share with your kids in
connection with relating to the opposite s%x. Be prepared, I am
going to be blunt.
1. Any body part they have that you don't have, don't touch it.
Any equipment they have that you don't have, it is hands off!
2. Do not put any part of your body into any part of their body.
3. Do not get horizontal. Don't even sit on the couch watching
TV, and lay down in one another's arms. If you do, you know where
that can lead.
4. If you are going to kiss, let it be short and meaningful.
Don't allow yourselves to get into a wrestling match. Again, it
is hard to find the switch to turn it off once you get going. [If
you can't do this without being tempted, perhaps you should lay
off the kissing altogether!)
5. Finally, let things like holding hands or putting your arm
around your boyfriend or girlfriend actually be meaningful.
If you are single, apply these rules, and they could save you a
lot of grief!
-<>-
"We cannot always or even often control events, but we can control
how we respond to them. When things happen which dismay or appall,
we ought to look to God for His meaning, remembering that He is
not taken by surprise nor can His purposes be thwarted in the end.
What God looks for is those who will worship Him in the midst of
every circumstance. Our look of inquiring trust glorifies Him. This
is our first responsibility: to glorify God. In the face of life's
worst reversals and tragedies, the response of a faithful Christian
is praise -- not for the wrong itself, certainly, but for who God is
and for the ultimate assurance that there is a pattern being worked
out for those who love Him." -Elisabeth Elliot

>Mountains Turned to Plains
(By C.H. Spurgeon)
"Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt
become a plain; and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof
with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it" (Zechariah 4:7).
At this hour a mountain of difficulty, distress, or necessity may
be in our way, and natural reason sees no path over it, or
through it, or round it. Let faith come in, and straightway the
mountain disappears and becomes a plain. But faith must first
hear the word of the LORD--"Not by might, nor by power, but by my
Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." This grand truth is a prime
necessity for meeting the insurmountable trials of life. I see
that I can do nothing and that all reliance on man is vanity. "Not
by might." I see that no visible means can be relied on, but the
force is in the invisible Spirit. God alone must work, and men and
means must be nothing accounted of. If it be so that the Almighty
God takes up the concerns of His people, then great mountains are
nothing. He can remove worlds as boys toss balls about or drive
them with their foot. This power He can lend to me. If the LORD
bids me move an Alp I can do it through His name. It may be a great
mountain, but even before my feebleness it shall become a plain;
for the LORD hath said it. What can I be afraid of with God on my
side?

Lord grant me the courage
To stand on my own.
When all from my world,
Thy love has gone.
Lord grant me the strength
To hold my head high,
Put a smile on my face,
When my eyes want to cry.
When my mind's in turmoil
Despair my friend,
Show me the wisdom
To know it will end.
Walk with me, Lord
Show me the way,
Help me get through
Till the next sunny day.

>Always Say A Prayer!
There's work to do, deadlines to meet.
You have no time to spare.
But as you hurry and scurry...
Always Say A Prayer.
In the midst of family chaos,
Quality time is rare.
Do your best; let God do the rest.
Always Say A Prayer.
It may seem like your worries
Are more than you can bear.
Slow down and take a breather...
Always Say A Prayer.
God knows how stressful life can be,
And He wants to ease your cares.
He'll respond to all your needs...
Always Say A Prayer.
Today I'm saying a little prayer
That God will send a smile to you
And send you special blessings
Through everything you do.
