The battle against freedom of religion is escalating. There are those who want to force Christians to confine our religious freedom to the church building. Our friends on the left are working hard to make speaking against homosexuality illegal hate speech. The mayor in Houston, Texas, demanded that preachers turn over, for the city’s approval, their sermons opposing homosexuality. The Civil Rights Commission in Colorado declared a Bible verse on a cake illegal, but a pro-homosexual message legal. Religious freedom is under a vicious attack by the liberal media and the far left. Even our president criticizes Christianity and Christians while remaining silent concerning radical Muslims. Christians must make our voice heard in the culture, or in the very near future, the culture will not hear our voice at all! Here is your opportunity to lead your church in an effort to preserve our First Amendment rights. Please take a stand for Freedom of Religion! We are very close to losing it! What can one person do? One person can wear a Freedom of Religion button! Get yours here: http://afastore.net/freedom-of-religion-buttons.html Order enough buttons and stickers for every member of your congregation. Urge them to get involved in the battle for Freedom of Religion. The liberals and far left have won this battle thus far due to the silence of Christians. Let’s begin to turn the tide! Far as I know, no one knows. Till now. Back in my college days -- some three decades ago -- I decided to cut classes one morning and head for the beach instead of the books. It was one of those bright, balmy, eighty-degree San Diego days. Sapphire-blue, sun-soaked. Postcard-perfect. Especially for playing hooky. I didn't plan on bailing out of Western Civilization and Physical Anthropology 101. But I found myself chugging down the I-8 in the exact opposite direction of Mr. Asmov's lecture hall. To put this in context, it was one of two days I "played hooky" in my entire scholastic career. I'm more of the "nose-to-the-grindstone" type. Steady. Responsible. Reliable. As impetuous and impulsive as a gimpy snail in a molasses factory. So why did I suddenly decide to do something as utterly uncharacteristic as spend a gorgeous sunny southern California day playing hooky? I'm not entirely sure. Maybe I was tired of being "responsible and reliable." Maybe I was in a rut and wanted to stir some spontaneity into my schedule. Maybe I wanted to "carpe diem." Seize the day. Instead of the other way around. It was a day worth seizing -- wading, sand castle-building, soaking up some rays. Lunching under swaying palms. Sucking in huge chunks of salt-spiced sea spray. (Okay, I also finished two essays, a book report, studied for exams and updated my Day Planner to a year out. Nobody's perfect.) Know what I discovered on that hooky day? Playing hooky is fun. Delicious. I don't remember diddly from most of my lecture notes, exams, textbooks or Day Planner, but I remember that "hooky day" like it was yesterday. There was something about seizing the day that was soul-stretching. Refreshing. Recharging. Energizing. Effervescent. I loved it. I celebrated my 50th birthday last fall. It felt weird. On one hand I feel I'm way too young to be that old. I mean, my mom was 50! On the other, it seems my half-century status is supposed to result in pearls of wisdom and sage sagacity. Kind of like a modern Oracle of Delphi. Truth is, I've never gotten the hang of that oracle thing. Most of what I've learned and gleaned in my five decades isn't all that earth-shattering: Put God first. Honor your parents. Love your spouse. Hug your kids. Work hard. Serve. Eat chocolate. They say "you're only as old as you feel," which probably puts me somewhere in the Sesame Street demographic. I'm not exactly turning cartwheels over that "older woman" bit. There are still plenty of other "olders" out there, thank you very much. If they're real "olders," I'll pass. Maybe you know the type. They rehearse their daily litany of moans and groans, aches and pains with the regularity of day following night. They've kept records of all the people who've wronged them over the years. They're gonna get even one of these days. Or they spend so much time resting on their laurels and looking back at "the good ole days" that "carpe diem" would give them whiplash. This phenomenon isn't unique to the Geritol crowd, is it? Some things transcend age: -- Comparing kids, outfits, income and accessories so the other person always gets short shrift. -- Mammoth-sized me-ism -- Excising "I'm sorry" from vocabularies like it's malignant -- Crammed closets compensating for shallow souls -- External busyness hiding internal barrenness I'd rather seize the day. Reach out. Restore. Get real. Laugh. Apologize. Play hooky once in a while. Grab the kids and scarf down that second banana split, guilt-free. While I'm hoping the cost of cake candles doesn't break the bank this year, I have some regrets from the past five decades. Some shoulda-woulda-couldas. But I've never regretted that hooky day. Don't tell anyone, but I sometimes wish I'd taken more. A few things I CAN tell you from my perch here in the middle-age rafters is that raspberry white chocolate cheesecake tastes better when it's shared. Lucy and Ethel in the bon-bon factory deserve an Emmy. Toothpaste can't be squeezed back into the tube. It's amazing how much less I know at age fifty than I did at eighteen. Family, faith and friends matter most. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. And while sapphire-skied, sun-soaked days are perfect for playing hooky, carpe diem is for every day. Life's too short not to. -- Kristine Lowder __________________________________________________ Kristine has authored eleven books. Rev. Chris Callahan Contributing Writer Centuries ago an Englishman was walking the streets of London, when he happened upon three workers laying stone. Curious about what they were building, he approached the first worker and asked, "What are you doing here?" This first fellow slapped more mortar down, saying, "You must be blind if you can't see I'm laying stone." Undeterred, the gentleman approached the second worker, and asked the same. He said, "Can't you see that I'm building a wall?" In his desire to find out what they were building, the gentleman approached the third worker and asked him what he was building. This mason turned, stepped away from the wall, wiped off his hands, and said exuberantly, "Why, I'm on the team that's building a cathedral!" Which of these three workers will work the hardest? Which one will lay the best stonework? Which one will be least likely to become discouraged? Which one will continue to lay stone over the many years this cathedral is being built? Of course, we know the answer: the laborer that has the best vision of what he is building. Not the laborer who only saw himself laying the stone at hand, nor the laborer who only thought he was building a wall, but the one who saw the vision of the completed future cathedral, glorifying the Lord. God has much to say about His people's vision: from Solomon's proclamation, "Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Prov. 29:18), to Moses' '"Who sees the vision of the Almighty, Who falls down, with eyes wide open.”(Num 24:4). Furthermore, the vision must be from the Lord: "They speak a vision of their own heart, not from the mouth of the LORD."(Jeremiah 23:16) What do you see happening in your church? Is it a nice local church in which to attend on Sunday (the first mason's vision)? Or perhaps a true move of God in your town (the second mason)? Or do you have the vision that your church is called by God as necessary and vital for the mission of the whole church? 'Then the LORD answered me and said: "Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” (Habbakuk 2:2) Sola Fide, Chris Callahan God Bless You Narrow Way Newsletter Ministry -<>- ________ /\______/`-. <()>____< ## \/______\,-' unknown unknown >POWER OF A TRASHED PENCIL She was a janitor at a school in India. Her husband died soon after her marriage, she didn't have any family in the area. She struggled with the responsibility of raising her kids. For the last twenty years, she's continued to sweep classrooms at local schools. One day, though, she had a radical idea: I want to give. It was followed-up by a reasonable yet confusing thought: But what can I possibly give? When she narrated her desire to a friend, he told her a story. "Gandhi used to write many letters. One day, Kakasaheb Kalelkar, a famous Indian author, saw him writing with a tiny pencil and immediately offered Gandhi a bigger pencil from his pocket. Gandhi politely said that he didn't need it. The next day, he saw Gandhi scrambling to find his pencil and Kakasaheb again offered him a pencil saying, 'Your pencil was so small anyway.' Gandhi gently replied, 'But a child had given me that pencil.' And he carried on the search for that small pencil. Sharing this story, he tells this sweeper woman: "You sweep schools everyday. And so, you must see all kinds of small pencils that kids throw away. Why don't you collect those and I'll give them to little kids who can't afford pencils and teach them how to write and draw." She liked that idea. In addition to pencils, she even collected erasers, sharpeners, and a few miscellaneous oddities. And every so often, when her bag gets full, she hands it off to her friend to give away to the needy. That was her ritual. When she found out that I was in town (I'm good friends with her kids), she insisted that I come over for a meal. Due to my hectic set of commitments, I wasn't able to go over for a meal but told her that I'd definitely join her for some snacks. So I went for breakfast one day, with my friend who originally shared Gandhi's story with her. She had cooked up a simple feast of love, which we thoroughly enjoyed! We gave her a shawl, explaining that someone had gifted it to us the night before and we couldn't really use it. And as we were leaving, she handed us a pink, almost ripped, and heavy plastic bag. Confused, I opened up that plastic bag, and saw those small pencil, erasers and sharpeners. Wow. It's hard to stay balanced, in the presence of something so valuable. In the next hour, I had to address a couple hundred people, and shared the story of a sweeper woman. As I opened up that pink plastic bag and held a fistful of these small pencils and erasers, it was hard for even the emcee to hold back the tears! I left the bag out for people to keep a material token of this sweeper woman's lesson -- it matters not what you give, but the amount of love you put into that giving. Everything, including the ripped plastic bag, was gone before I could take a second look. The humble offering had a certain power that simply can't be bought. I felt it, everyone felt it. -<>- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Teach Me Psalms 27: [11] Teach me thy way, O LORD, and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Do you realize how many verses of Psalms include a request for God to teach him? I am going to list them. Psalms 25:4,5 Psalms 86:11 Psalms 90:12 Psalms 119:12, 26, 33, 64, 66, 68, 108, 124, 135, 171 Psalms 143:10 After reading so many of these I realized David had a real heart to learn from God. He was passionate about it. Now I can really grasp even better why the Bible tells us David was a man after God’s own heart. He would be my kind of guy too. Today, in Christianity in America, you don’t see lots of teachable people. They want to do everything themselves like the little red hen and you know what? That is from our sin nature. We are rebels and don’t want to trust any authority to teach us what is right or wrong, good or bad, even in many of our churches. No, instead we just want to give our opinions in a Bible Study, and treat the Word of God as something we can take as an option. This is part of what is wrong with America and must be repented of if this country is to survive as a God blessed country. It is pride to put it bluntly. And it is the pride of the folks in this country, even of the Christians, that has brought us to where we are now politically, economically, morally, and spiritually. More and more I see evidence of these days being like Noah’s time. Are you asking God to teach you and are you letting Him do so? Are you letting Him teach you in the way you need to be taught or are you refusing to accept His disciplines. God knows what we need to learn more than we do. The dark days that seem ahead –this country has asked for it just as much as every other country on this planet has. Ask God what you need to learn and be a willing student/disciple. Times are tough, especially in small areas. I drove to a blighted part of the city with boarded-up homes. We were five months behind on electric payments and I'd been calling to delay the shut-off for one more week. Twice they delayed payment. At the zeroth hour I pulled up to the building, preceded by a black woman driving a rusted, crumbling beater that shuddered to a stop. I walked in behind her, cash in hand, and waited in line. My children bounced on chairs nearby. Two women behind bulletproof acrylic windows took money. But only one line moved. Delaying the other was a long conversation from a young white mother with a baby on her hip. She wore pajamas and a sweater, was good-natured and laughing. "Well, so..." she said, "you know how it is. I mean, they just sit there in a pile, right? I don't know where they go. I don't know, I probably lost it." The woman behind the two-inch thick bulletproof Plexiglas nodded, unspeaking. Her nameplate said "Ella". The young patron continued," I mean, I GUESS the payment plan is good. But that's... how much again??" "Fifty dollars," the woman behind the Plexiglas prompted. The young mother said, "Yeah... fifty. Dollars, I mean. And if we miss that today then what? Fifty?" Ella confirmed, "Yes, fifty. The payment plan we arranged." "Boy, how could it be so much?" A long pause. "So what happens if we don't have the...?" Ella: "Fifty dollars. Well, that's when the account needs to be discontinued." The woman with the baby on her hip looked at the floor during the whole conversation. Talking in a low voice, but in a silent room of people waiting. She talked as though every second she talked was another second the power stayed on. As though somehow in this circular conversation the situation would resolve itself. Momentarily irritated one woman was taking so much time, I then felt some shame. I'd just wait calmly. Clearly the young woman with the baby was just buying time. Seconds. Moments. Avoiding the inevitable: her power would be shut off in the morning. Slowly the line crawled. My children became more animated and impatient. The woman with the baby kept talking. Then the woman in front of me went up to the counter -- the woman who drove the rusted beater. She handed the teller a check. "This is for her," and pointed at the young mother with the baby. The woman who wrote the check left. She bee-lined to her beater and drove off. The two tellers looked at one another confused. One said to the young mother, "Well, I guess, Merry Christmas." The woman with the baby looked at the floor, "I don't think she pointed at me. I don't know her." "She paid your electric bill," said a teller. "Next!" And the people in line who'd been staring blankly burst out in a joyous murmur. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .---. .---. : : o : me want cookie! _..-: o : :-.._ / .-'' ' `---' `---' " ``-. .' One day when cat food was on sale Susan brought home what she had bought and used it as a way to teach Nathanael, 5, about value -- comparing price, ingredients, weight, etc. Susan went to the bathroom to do her hair. Nathanael came in and she could see he had been eating something. "It doesn't taste any different," Nathanael said. "Did you taste the cat food?" Susan asked in amazement. "Yup -- and you got taken! -- Susan Oswalt (aunt of Jacob Werling, 8, and Nathanael Werling, 5) of Poneto, Indiana Here is another story from Susan. Jacob, 8, was discussing with family members where they would go on vacation. "What about Oklahoma?" he was asked. It was mentioned he could learn about Indians. Jacob indicated he didn't think Indians exist any more. He was told his Pampa (grandpa) has eaten with an Indian. "Do you mean Pampa was a Pilgrim?" Jacob asked. Marissa, 3, was eating "p'spaghetti" with her mother and sisters. Her mother began making a plate for her daddy for work the following day. When Marissa saw her mother loading "p'spaghetti" on to the plate (Daddy is 6'5" and a big eater) she said with a red-stained face, "Mommy, you is a piggy!" She thought her mommy was taking a very generous second helping. -- Sherri (Marissa's mommy) of Ballwin, Missouri Here is another story from Marissa. Justin, 4, was given an assignment to bring in a picture of his favorite animal for show and tell. The teacher began going around the circle discussing the various pictures when she came to Justin. She asked, "What's your favorite animal?" He responded, "A-Frincken Elephant." The teacher was stunned and asked him to repeat what he'd said. Again he said, "A-Fricken Elephant." The teacher asked him to bring her his picture. Underneath the photo was labeled "African Elephant." -- Gaga and Poppy of Ballwin, Missouri __ __ .' Breann had a rash on her arm and Breann said it was red because she put lotion on it. Her mom said, "Breann, you didn't use that lotion I told you not to use, did you?" Breann replied, "Mom, that was about 10,000 weeks ago when I used that!" -- Grandparents Lloyd and Zelma Feltner of Kendallville, Indiana One morning Breann, 5, woke up and was just sitting on her bed. Her mother asked what was wrong. Breann replied, "Mom, my throat hurts I can't swallow, I can't burg, and I can't even yawn!" The mother who sent this story titled it, "My Daughter the Lawyer." Pnina, 6, was helping her big brother get ready for the holiday of Tu B'Shvat (the Jewish holiday of trees) by arranging platters of dried fruits and nuts, some of which she only gets to eat once a year. She asked if she could taste (try for the first time) one of the dried fruits and was told no. When she got to the raisins, she grabbed a few and ate them, explaining that it was OK because she knew what they tasted like! -- Brandel Falk (mother of Pnina) of Jerusalem, Israel Alexa, 2, had a lot happening in her little world. She was being potty trained and her aunt just had a baby. One day her teacher was helping her in the bathroom. The teacher, who had just had a baby herself, had Lexi on the potty and was kneeling in front of Lexi when Lexi said, "I know what those are!" referring to her teacher's ample chest. The teacher responded "What?" Lexi said, "Those are milk makers. My aunt has those too!" The teacher had to stiffle a laugh while pulling her shirt up a little. -- Marissa (Alexa's aunt) of St. Louis, Missouri , :. , ,__.`|\' , \,^|/|='._=-_. -.,\ \_) \/(^_)\/ (_/ / -:__ .-'~__)` ___-`~. ___ ~(_'-)-~` -^~\ ~-.' _ '. .' _ `.-._~/^~. _.=^<-.'| (@) | | (@) | ->.-^` ~-._>-'`. .'~'. .'`-<~.' .-~^'__^^--~`_...__`~--^^. _,^= `-^ __.;--~`( | )`~--;-~-._`: __...'~``.~ ^'-._\_/_.-'^~-.~-_...__ /. ~- `\-. ^.~ .`~` `.~-. ^.-/~.- ^,\ jgs |^'- .` ~|_`-.._:_._,_:_,_..-'|- ~ . When there was a pause in the music and everything got quiet, Mallory called out, "Good job, Grandma!" -- Mary Etta Blessing (great-grandmother) of Bluffton, Indiana Jamie picked Mikey up from preschool. On the drive home, Jamie asked Mikey what he learned that day. After thinking for a minute, Mikey asked Jamie if she knew an owl was not a turtle? And Mikey added, "Raccoons are not a turtle either." Jamie asked him why he thought that. Mikey replied they sleep during the day and hunt for food at night. Then Jamie realized the teacher must have said that owls and raccoons are nocturnal! -- Cheryl Barker (grandmother of Mikey) of Kendallville, Indiana Cameron was shopping last summer for back to school. When they entered a store, he looked up and asked, "Mom... what do they call mannequins?" His mother replied, "They are called mannequins, Son." She explained to her granddaughter who is six that she was going to limit the eating, drinking and definitely no smoking in the new car because she wanted to keep that "New Car Smell" as long as she could. TerryAnn picked her up from school the other day and could tell she was not feeling all that well. As she was buckling up in her car seat she accidently passed gas. Before TerryAnn could even correct her or get an "oops" or "sorry," she announced from the back seat, "Well, there goes the new car smell." -- TerryAnn Fielding (Maw Maw to Gabby Marie Fielding) of Brandon, Mississippi Bailea, 3, had been keeping an eye on some bunnies that had made a nest next to the Bortner family's garage. One day she looked into the nest and the bunnies were gone. To keep her from getting upset, her parents, Matt and Amy, told her the bunnies probably went to get something to eat. Recently Joyce had to take her granddaughter Laci, 4, to dancing school after Laci's mother dropped her off at Joyce's house. As they were driving, Joyce heard, "This road is very twisty. Are you sure you know the trail?" As Joyce pulled into the shopping center there was a shout of astonishment. "It's my dancing school!" Later on the way home Joyce's OnStar (no hands) phone rang in the car. Joyce answered. It was her daughter. Joyce made quick plans about where to meet her, and hung up. Then she heard, "What's Mommy doing in the mirror?" They met at a small luncheonette for lunch. Joyce had the teabag on a spoon in her right hand. There was a shout, "What is that thing in your tea?" Joyce looked in the cup and didn't see anything but tea. Again, at the top of her voice, "That thing, what is that thing?" Laci's mother quietly replied, "It's a teabag Laci."
