I was amazed at the education I received just from listening to her share special accounts of her life. They often became treasured bedtime stories. My grandmother's name was Irene, and Pearl was one of her older sisters. Irene lived on a farm with her parents and siblings. There was a tall windmill that stood next to the machine shed near the barn. As a little girl, Irene watched the men climb to the top of the windmill to oil the wheel. One fall morning, Irene waved goodbye to her parents who had hitched old Jip to the buggy to attend an auction sale a few miles away. Her sister Pearl was in charge of the girls and decided to teach Irene how to tie her shoelaces that morning outside on the leaves. After a bit of practice, Irene decided to tie a ribbon on her rag doll. She put the doll on the bench in front of the machine shed and worked at tying the ribbon around the doll's neck. After accomplishing that task she looked around for something else to do. She spotted the old windmill and remembered watching the men climb it. That seemed like something she would enjoy doing. So with her rag doll under her arm she started to climb the small galvanized rungs which formed the ladder to reach the top. Her legs were short and the rungs were far apart but she managed to get to the top. She placed her doll on the platform and somehow pulled herself up next to her. She could see for miles and pointed out neighboring farms and the many fall colors to her doll. Uncle John, and his wife Bertha, lived across the road. When Bertha saw Irene climbing she called her husband in from the barn to quickly rescue her. However, after talking it over, they decided that might frighten her to see Uncle John coming. So, they telephoned across the road and told Pearl where Irene was and how to get her down. Pearl came out to the windmill alone and told Irene to stay seated where she was. She said she would climb up and help her come down. The first thing she did when she reached the top was throw the rag doll down to the ground. Pearl was able to get Irene off the platform and her feet on the rung and slowly they came down together. When the girls were safely on the ground, Uncle John was there to praise Pearl for bringing Irene down safely. Irene didn't recall what he said to her, but she was afraid it wasn't good. And she got a scolding for disobeying and climbing the old windmill. Irene said the good thing that came from climbing was being able to see the countryside and the colorful leaves while sitting on the top of the windmill, and not falling. And she also learned to tie a bow that day! Years later, when we visited Grandma, we occasionally drove out to the country just to see the farmhouse where she was born and lived as a child. Quite often it was autumn, and the leaves were colorful and the apple trees continued to produce, so we'd pick a few and Grandma would tell us about living on the farm. But nobody would climb that windmill! It was still standing, but we just enjoyed looking at it, knowing it was part of Grandma's past. -- Diane Dean White ___________________________________________ You can see a review of Diane's new book Beach Walks here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1403366888/heart/ref=nosim She also has an outreach for women called Seeds of Encouragement at: http://www.heartwarmers4u.com/members/?thelamb212 Diane and her husband Stephen reside on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where she continues her love for writing. (Author Unknown) 1) THE GIFT OF LISTENING... But you must REALLY listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning your response. Just listening. 2) THE GIFT OF AFFECTION... Be generous with appropriate hugs, kisses, pats on the back and handholds. Let these small actions demonstrate the love you have for family and friends. 3) THE GIFT OF LAUGHTER... Clip cartoons. Share articles and funny stories. Your gift will say, "I love to laugh with you." 4) THE GIFT OF A WRITTEN NOTE... It can be a simple "Thanks for the help" note or a full sonnet. A handwritten note may be remembered for a lifetime, and may even change a life. 5) THE GIFT OF A COMPLIMENT... A simple and sincere, "You look great in red," "You did a super job" or "That was a wonderful meal" can make someone's day. 6) THE GIFT OF TIME... Often what most says "I love you" is your presence both physically and emotionally to nourish the relationships in your life. 7) THE GIFT OF SOLITUDE... There are times when we want nothing better, than to be left alone. Be sensitive to those times and give the gift of solitude to others. 8) THE GIFT OF A CHEERFUL DISPOSITION... The easiest way to feel good is to extend a kind word to someone, really it's not that hard to say, Hello or Thank You. 9) THE GIFT OF PRAYER... Since God can help others where we cannot, sincerely praying for someone is a tremendous gift (and responsibility). 10) THE GIFT OF YOURSELF... There are countless ways you can do favors for others by giving of yourself. Offer to babysit for someone you know that needs time to themselves, shovel off the neighbor's driveway while shoveling off your own, etc. You get the idea. A boy was sitting on a park bench with one hand resting on an open Bible. He was loudly exclaiming his praise to God. "Hallelujah! Hallelujah! God is great!" he yelled without worrying whether anyone heard him or not. Shortly after, along came a man who had recently completed some studies at a local university. Feeling himself very enlightened in the ways of truth and very eager to show this enlightenment, he asked the boy about the source of his joy. "Hey" asked the boy in return with a bright laugh, "Don't you have any idea what God is able to do? I just read that God opened up the waves of the Red Sea and led the whole nation of Israel right through the middle." The enlightened man laughed lightly, sat down next to the boy and began to try to open his eyes to the "realities" of the miracles of the Bible. "That can all be very easily explained. Modern scholarship has shown that the Red Sea in that area was only 10-inches deep at that time. It was no problem for the Israelites to wade across." The boy was stumped. His eyes wandered from the man back to the Bible laying open in his lap. The man, content that he had enlightened a poor, naive young person to the finer points of scientific insight, turned to go. Scarcely had he taken two steps when the boy began to rejoice and praise louder than before. The man turned to ask the reason for this resumed jubilation. "Wow!" exclaimed the boy happily, "God is greater than I thought! Not only did He lead the whole nation of Israel through the Red Sea, He topped it off by drowning the whole Egyptian army in 10-inches of water!" --- ...TeeHee! Still love this classic! Thanks LouiseAu! Actually I don't take much credence to 'modern scientist'. If you have noticed over the years they keep changing their stories. An easy example is our latest Pluto fiasco. They came out saying it wasn't a planet after all these years of us thinking that it was a planet. So people changed their science books and way of talking about Pluto. Then a couple years later they came out saying oh wait a minute, Pluto really is a planet. Wait, what? Pluto a planet again? http://tinyurl.com/kzup34m Of course this is just a joke but really? That's what secularists would have you believe. Ten inches of water was how deep the Red Sea at that time in that area was. Not giving the facts. But they don't want you to actually know the facts, they want you to believe this joke. Here's the real facts - Moses and The Red Sea http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/mosesredsea.html I think people need to get an education. Prov.22: [6] Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. This is the main reason I tell parents to be the ones to teach their children the Word Of God. Don't leave it up to the church to do. How can you trust your child's future to someone else? Children are like parrots and mimic their most admired mom and/or dad. If you are the one to train them up in God's Word, then it will stay with them much more than if they are taught the Word of God only one or two days a week by someone they barely know. Grandparents can reinforce a parent's bible teaching with the children but unless they are the primary care giver, won't be able to replace the parents training. The child will always look to their primary care giver to be just like them and parrot them. They desire to please those that give them the most love and care in their life. If parents do this, then they don't have to worry that their child will turn into the person that they are ashamed of. Without the proper influence as a child, you don't know how they will grow up to be. Maybe OK, maybe not. At least if you do as God instructs you to do, then you know you are on the right track with your child. Father ALWAYS knows best! Check out this page... ,"=-. / _),`'". Rules For Raising Children http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/rulesforchildren.html You can generally tell the people who had good instruction as children at home and the ones who didn't by the way they behave as adults. That is why it is MOST important for both parents to be in their children's lives while they are growing up. As I said, children will mimic the parent they most admire while growing up. If the dad is not around and the child blames the mom for not being able to be with his dad, then his mimicking may go to some unruly friend or heaven forbid a gang member. Whoever he/she gets the most love and attention from. Why we see so much violence today as our broken homes reflect the 'training' given to our children. 'Marriage and divorce are both common experiences. In Western cultures, more than 90 percent of people marry by age 50. Healthy marriages are good for couples’ mental and physical health. They are also good for children; Growing up in a happy home protects children from mental, physical, educational and social problems. However, about 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce. The divorce rate for subsequent marriages is even higher.' When the big day arrived, there was a large gathering in the palace courtyard. Four finalists were brought forward, and from these four, the king would select the winner. The first person presented was a wealthy philanthropist. The king was told that this man was highly deserving of the honor because of his humanitarian efforts. He had given much of his wealth to the poor. The second person was a celebrated physician. The king was told that this doctor was highly deserving of the honor because he had rendered faithful and dedicated service to the sick for many years. The third person was a distinguished judge. The king was told that the judge was worthy because he was noted for his wisdom, his fairness, and his brilliant decisions. The fourth person presented was an elderly woman. Everyone was quite surprised to see her there, because her manner was quite humble, as was her dress. She hardly looked the part of someone who would be honored as the greatest subject in the kingdom. What chance could she possibly have, when compared to the other three, who had accomplished so much? Even so, there was something about her the look of love in her face, the understanding in her eyes, her quiet confidence. The king was intrigued, to say the least, and somewhat puzzled by her presence. He asked who she was. The answer came: "You see the philanthropist, the doctor, and the judge? Well, she was their teacher!" -<>- ____ (\ __ /) ( \(__)/ ) ( /<>\ ) (\/\/) Marilyn / \ Cox ( ) ~~~~ >Guardian Angel Last night I had a dream It had a tale to tell. On one such journey, stopped by a highwayman who shouted, "Halt, your money or your life." Wesley got down from his horse, emptied his pockets to reveal only a handful of coins. He even invited the robber to search his saddlebags—which only carried his books. In disgust, the thief was turning away when John Wesley cried "Stop, I have something more to give you." Puzzled, the robber turned back. Wesley then leaned towards him and said "My friend, you may live to regret this sort of life in which you are engaged. If you ever do, I beseech you to remember this: 'The blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin.'" The robber hurried silently away, but Wesley got back on his horse and rode on his way, praying in his heart that the Word might be fixed in the robber's conscience. Years later, at the close of a Sunday evening service, a stranger stepped forward and earnestly begged to speak with John Wesley. Wesley recognized him as the robber who had stolen from him so long before, but now he was a well-to-do tradesman and, better still, a child of God. Raising Wesley's hand to his lips, he affectionately kissed it and said with deep emotion, "To you, dear sir, I owe it all." Wesley replied softly, "Nay, nay, my friend, not to me, but to the precious blood of Christ which cleanses us from all sin." -<>- .-=":-=") |_.'|_.' /" /" : / / / .' .' : .-'-.---. / .--"""""--.. : .((((__ .\ ___.:-//\\\\\\-._ -. __..--'"` [.]-[.] \\_. ` `""--..__ ..---\ ___(/_ | /___ /---.. Mazzella When I was a freshman in college I received a letter that forever opened a window in my soul. I had just started writing and the editor of my local county newspaper had been kind enough to publish some of my work. About a month later the letter arrived. Sadly, I lost it in the many moves I have made since then, but it’s essence still lives in my heart. Here is what it said. "You may not remember me. We last saw each other in kindergarten and my family moved the next year. We still get the county paper in the mail, though, and when I saw your name I had to write you. You see that first year in school was very difficult for me. I was a tiny, sickly, and homely girl that the other children teased everyday. The thing I remember about you is that you never did. You were always kind to me. When we lined up to go out the teacher always put me beside you and you would hold my hand as we crossed the street. You talked to me and played with me. When you were around too the other kids didn’t tease me. You saw me as a person, not someone different and I will be forever grateful for that. My whole life was better because of how you treated me all those years ago." I quickly wrote back to my kindergarten friend and we corresponded happily for several years before the illness that she had struggled with since childhood finally took her life. I will never forget, however, just how much that simple kindness I had shared meant to her. It made me see that kindness, goodness, love, and joy truly are the most important things in the world. Every act of kindness we do touches another’s heart. Every bit of goodness we share makes the world a better place. Every choice for love we make brings us and those around us closer to God. God blessed us with the power to help, heal, love, and change this world forever. Let’s use that power and make both Earth and Heaven smile. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment: Yes, I'm a Nationalist - like Trump is! Joyce Schowalter New Jersey, USA It was about 1984, when cell phones weren't in common use, and truckers were renowned for helping travelers in need. My brother was heading home from Connecticut in the wee hours of the morning. He was very tired and fell asleep at the wheel on the Merritt Parkway. The old style guardrail ripped his car in two, folding the car in half just behind the front seats. The front wheels/axles were literally in line with the rear wheels and axles. The accident was witnessed by a trucker, who used his CB radio to call for aid. My brother seemed pretty banged up. Police and emergency vehicles all arrived at the scene and my brother was taken to the hospital. After being x-rayed and examined at the emergency room, my brother was ready to leave. He had miraculously only sustained bruises and cuts; very minor injuries considering the accident. My brother was looking for a phone to call home, when to his amazement he saw the trucker who had seen it all happen in the lobby waiting for him. The trucker asked him about the injuries and then asked where he lived and how he planned to get home. My brother told the trucker he lived in New Jersey and didn't yet know how he'd get home. He needed to find a payphone. The trucker replied, "I'll take you home." Over 100 miles later, a full size tractor-trailer rumbled into a quiet neighborhood, and the trucker made good on his word. My brother was home. My brother offered to reward the trucker for his incredible support. Our parents' house was very large so it was evident my father was well to do. I'm sure the trucker must have known he could get a very decent reward... if he accepted. He did not. He refused to even be compensated for the fuel he had used. My brother headed to the house as the trucker pulled away, never to be seen or heard from again. The incredibly kind and unselfish actions of this man have stayed with both my brother and me all these years. My brother and I have had good lives and we routinely perform random acts of kindness to this day. I was not even there and was forever moved by this man's actions. One day, if an opportunity arises, I will give of myself as the trucker gave of himself. I wish I had met him. I'd love to see him face to face today and tell him of the way he affected me. My deepest thanks and appreciation go to this unknown man for the help he gave my brother -- and the men he helped us become. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Our Friend Linda :) __ / _,\ \_\ ,,,, _,_) # /) (= =)D__/ __/ // C/^__)/ _( ___// \_,/ -. He became so attached to them, that he didn't even notice his hunger at first. A fruit tree reminded him, but he felt the apples in his hands. He couldn't bear to set them down to reach for the fruit. In fact, he couldn't relax, either, if he was to defend his apples. A proud, but less happy monkey continued to walk along the forest trails. The apples became heavier, and the poor little monkey thought about leaving them behind. He was tired, hungry, and he couldn't climb trees or collect fruit with his hands full. What if he just let go? Letting go of such valuable things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so tired. Seeing the next fruit tree, and smelling it's fruit was enough. He dropped the wooden apples and reached up for his meal. He was happy again. Like that little monkey, we sometimes carry things that seem too valuable to let go. A man carries an image of himself as "productive" - carries it like a shiny wooden apple. But in reality, his business leaves him tired, and hungry for a better life. Still, letting go seems crazy. Even his worries are sacred apples - they prove he's "doing everything he can." He holds onto them compulsively. --- ..Awww, yes. The chaff of life! Thanks Linda! , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' We do this. If we are not letting go of our worries then we are hoarding things around our house that are just as destructive to us. Maybe we are doing both? Hoarding is a problem too you know. Besides our worries, people hoard things. We may need it later. Ever notice how much better you feel after that clutter is cleaned away from around you? Even our pets seem to enjoy nice clutter free areas better than living in a pig pen full of junk. If it is not serving any good purpose to you then by all means get rid of it. Give it to Welfare if it is still usable. If not it will just weigh you down and oppress you. Check out this awesome teaching... The Importance of BURNING THE CHAFF http://tinyurl.com/zxd8u5y That's what worrying about things does too. Weighs you down and oppresses you. Doesn't do you any good. Certainly isn't going to change things. It is best to get rid of those worries by giving them to God through Jesus Christ our Lord... 1 Pet.5: [7] Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. That's what our Father wants for us to do. Time to renew your mind and do as God's Word says to do. One day she was riding around looking at different parks, community centers, etc. Patsy's son, Dean, 4, was riding with her. After awhile he asked her what she was looking for. She told him she was looking for just the right place for the "Goostree" reunion (Goostree is her maiden name). They rode for another minute or two and Dean said, "There Granny, there's some 'goose-trees.'" He was pointing at a wooded area off the road. She had to pull over she was laughing so hard. - Patsy Campbell of Portland, Tennessee Faith Jean-Ann and Grammy are best friends. One night during a great-room "camp out" they were looking at family pictures around the room. Faith, 4 at the time, was curious. "Where is your mom?" Faith asked. Grammy told her, "In heaven with Jesus." Faith then asked if (Grammy) was going to go to heaven to be with Jesus and if she could go with Grammy when she went to see Jesus. This was delicate, so Grammy took her time answering. Before she could reply, Faith added, "then we can go get our hair done by Kay and have lunch at Bob Evans!" - Margo and Dan Phillips (Grammy and PawPaw) of Big Long Lake, Wolcottville, Indiana One Good Friday, when he was 2, Christian, Faith's brother, accompanied Grammy and PawPaw to afternoon services at St. Mary of the Angels Church. The time came to pay reverence to the cross as it was placed on the floor near the altar. Christian was squatted down looking very closely at the cross. He put his little hand first on Christ's feet, then on the side and finally along the face of Christ's image on the cross. With the saddest face, he said, "Oh, Grammy, OW." _._ _/:|: /||||||. ||||||||. /|||||||||: /||||||||||| .||||||||||||| | ||||||||||||: _/| |||||||||||||:_=---.._ | | |||||:'''':|| '~-._ '-. _/| | ||' '-._ _: ; | | | ' '~~ _; | ' _.=._ _-~ _.~ { '-_' _.--=.-~ _.._ {_ } _.-~ @-, { '-._ _. When asked where he wanted his fourth birthday party, he said Pizza Hut with Gina. They stopped at a Fort Wayne Bob Evans one day and Lucas gave the waitress his order. She commented what a good job he did. Lucas replied, "I know. I have my own girl at Pizza Hut." On a trip to see family, Janis decided to take some homemade potato soup to share. As they were eating Paw Paw was trying to get little Kayla to eat. He said to her, "This soup is so good that I ate all mine up. See how big my tummy got." Without blinking, Kayla said, "Paw Paw, your tummy was already big." - Janis Sproat (grandmother of Kayla) of Butler, Indiana On the way to daycare, Janis' daughter discovered she had forgotten the youngest one's bag. Ryne spoke up and said, "That's OK, we can go back and get it. We did that when Grandpa forgot his teeth. Lisa's son Stephen, 9, took it upon himself to amuse the little girl. After a while, he told Lisa's friend, "Could you watch her for a little while? In one version of the game, Julia pretended to be a bird who ventured too far away from her laundry basket "nest" while watching the sky for chicken hawks. She giggled with glee when she dashed back to her "nest" and escaped danger. Apparently Julia has heard about the nation's current economic situation because she told her baby bird to "hide in the nest to get away from the creditors!" She meant "predators." - Donna Moller (Grammy) of Katy, Texas Jessie was busy and distracted when Lydia, 3, walked into the room, saying, "Adam (her 9-year-old brother) has a lot of blood." Mom responded with "Yes, everyone has a lot of blood in their body." Lydia turned and raced upstairs, calling, "It's OK, Adam, just put it back in." That certainly got Mom's attention. Fortunately, Adam only had a minor wound. -Great-grandma Shirley in Illinois Back in June, one of the Vacation Bible School students, Victoria, 8, fell down and hit her head. She wasn't badly hurt. She started saying that she needed a CAT scan because she could feel her brain being bruised. She said she could feel herself going into a coma! Her brother Brent and all the other onlookers were suppressing their laughter. Brent asked Victoria some math questions, which of course she got right. Then Brent said, "See Victoria, your brain is OK. It's not injured." Then, shaking his head he laughingly told her to quit acting like a drama queen. Victoria replied, "This has NEVER happened to me before so I DON'T KNOW HOW TO ACT!" Her great-nephew, Alton, 2, was about to start his potty-training. One day he was at Kelly's mom's house. He walked up to her with a folded diaper in his hand for her to throw away. He told her, "Alton changed Alton's diaper." Thank goodness it was just a wet one. Needless to say, it didn't take long to get him potty trained. Cora, 4, was quietly watching the Emmy awards with her parents. An actress appeared in a very elaborate, brightly colored blue dress. Cora quietly said, "She looks like a peacock." - Susan Meadors (Cora's granny) of Georgetown, Kentucky Wyatt, 5, has just started kindergarten. One morning he woke up with a stuffy nose and informed his mom, Jill, that he was sick and couldn't go to school. Mom told Wyatt that his teacher had said he needed to be in school unless he was throwing up or had a high temperature. She encouraged Wyatt to get his teeth brushed while she got his school clothes ready. When Wyatt didn't come out of the bathroom for quite some time, Jill went to the door to ask what he was doing and found Wyatt looking at her sheepishly with the thermometer under his arm. - Bunni (Wyatt's Memaw) of Hillsboro, Illinois <\ _ \\ _/{ _ \\ _- -_ /{ / `\ _- - -_ _~ = ( @ \ - - -_ _- - ~-_ \( =\ \ - -_ _~ - ~_ | 1 :\ \ _-~-_ - -_ _- - ~ |V: \ \ _-~ ~-_- -_ _-~ - / | : \ \ ~-_- -_ _-~ - _.._ { | : _-`` ~- _-_ _-~ -__..--~ ~-_ { : \:} =~__.--~~ ~-_\ : / \ : /__ //`Y'--\\ <+ \\ \\ WWW "Pterodactyl" ' Lark, 3, was visiting Nanna and PawPaw when she began to cry and call for help. As beautiful butterflies flutter by They never fail to catch my eye With wings of pink and blue Some are black and yellow, too. Beautiful butterflies soar high in the air Over mountain tops and desert sand They can make their home anywhere God cares for them wherever they land. When the weather begins to turn cold Flying south the beautiful butterflies go God will protect them there until spring Returning them to my garden once again. Verse © 2005 Glenna M.
