I had just moved back to Jacksonville, Florida, with my three young daughters after many years away. We were struggling, and I wondered what kind of a Thanksgiving I was going to be able to have for my children. We were living in a small trailer, and I was looking for a job while trying to convince my girls, and myself, that this was all an adventure. My youngest child, Helen, was barely three years old. But from the beginning of her first lisped words, Helen seemed to have a sense of decency and wisdom way beyond her years. The children were all excited about Thanksgiving. The anticipated feast was all the girls talked about. Two days before Thanksgiving, there was a flash fire in a nearby home, and a young family lost everything. The entire community became involved in the rescue of the couple and their young daughter. Shelter was donated by a church, and it seemed that everyone was involved in the collection of food, household items, bedding and clothes. I was thankful that even I was able to spare a few things. Brigades of busy people willingly donated their time, as well as money. I was certain the tragedy was especially hard for the family this close to Thanksgiving, and I was grateful that someone was available to come to our house and pick up our donated items. Helen was very thoughtful for one so young, and I made myself a little crazy imagining what she must be thinking about the fire. Finally, on the afternoon before Thanksgiving, two lovely women came to our house to collect our donations. How I wished I had more to give, I said, as I helped carry the donations out. They reassured me that the family would be well provided for. The girls and I stood outside chatting, as the ladies climbed back into their station wagon. All of a sudden Helen shrieked, "WAIT! Don't anybody move!" She streaked into the trailer door, crying aloud, "WE FORGOT SOMETHING!" I looked apologetically at the ladies, but before I could follow her, Helen was back outside, holding onto her favorite teddy bear -- the bear that I had made for her birthday, just two months before. Helen held out the bear, her green eyes searching my face. "Mommy," Helen implored, "the little girl doesn't have any toys. She needs this bear! I have to give it to her." My heart quaked. I thought about the few toys Helen had and how many hours I had spent sewing that little bear. Now she wanted to give it away. We stood in stunned silence, the ladies staring at me. I struggled with my feelings. All the love I'd put into that bear. All the things we needed and didn't have. Surely Helen could find another toy. Then I stooped down to face Helen, who was still holding out the bear -- worry lines creasing her little forehead. I searched her little heart shaped face, my fingers brushing aside her red-gold hair. My eyes filled as I realized that my heart would never be as big as the heart pounding in that little chest. My voice broke, as I said, "Of course, Helen, you're right. We forgot the toy. How thoughtful of you to remember." Helen, grinning, handed over the beautiful bear. When the ladies drove away, I took my little girl and held her close. It was a warm, sunny, Saturday afternoon some fifteen or sixteen years ago. I had volunteered to take my two older kids to the local playground while my wife put the youngest down for a nap. As soon as we got there my daughter headed for the swings and asked for a push. As I was helping my daughter to go higher and higher, I noticed another little girl 3 swings down trying in vain to get her own swing going. Her elderly grandmother was sitting quietly on a nearby bench and smiled at me. I gave my daughter one last big push and then walked over to the little girl and asked if she could use a push too. She smiled and said "Yes!" I soon had her feet soaring towards the clouds while she laughed happily. For the next two hours I found myself pushing swings and playing tag with my son, daughter, and the other little girl. By the time we headed home I was physically exhausted but my spirit was still flying higher than those swings. Two years later I was exhausted again after a long day's work. Still, I needed to pick up my kids from the local grade school before heading home. I stood wearily in the parents' waiting area watching for my children. Suddenly, I felt two tiny arms wrap around my stomach. I looked down and there was the little girl from the playground smiling up at me. She gave me one more big hug before heading off to catch her bus. As I watched her go I didn't feel quite so tired anymore and my spirit was once again soaring in the Heavens. In this life every single bit of love we share finds its way back to us again. It may travel from heart to heart or it may blossom in the soul where it was planted. It may take seconds or it may take years. God's law of love, though, is never broken. What we give, we get back. What we sow, we reap. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength."1 In Congress on July 4, 1776, fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence declaring the then Thirteen Colonies (now states) in North America independent from Great Britain. Central to the Declaration of Independence are the following words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." While there are conflicting stories2 as to what happened to all of the fifty-six original signers, we can be certain that when they signed this declaration, they knew full well that they were putting their lives at risk. Please be advised the following notes are to help you arrive fully prepared. 1. Our sidewalk will not be lined with homemade, paper bag luminaries. After a trial run, it was decided that no matter how cleverly done, rows of flaming lunch sacks do not have the desired welcoming effect. 2. Once inside, our guests will note that the entry hall is not decorated with the swags of Indian corn and fall foliage I had planned to make. Instead, I've gotten the kids involved in the decorating by having them track in colorful autumn leaves from the front yard. The mud was their idea. 3. The dining table will not be covered with expensive linens, fancy china, or crystal goblets. If possible, we will use dishes that match and everyone will get a fork. Since this IS Thanksgiving, we will refrain from using the plastic Peter Rabbit plate and the Santa napkins from last Christmas. 4. Our centerpiece will not be the tower of fresh fruit and flowers that I promised. Instead we will be displaying a hedgehog-like decoration hand-crafted from the finest construction paper. The artist assures me it is a turkey. 5. We will be dining fashionably late. The children will entertain you while you wait. I'm sure they will be happy to share every choice comment I have made regarding Thanksgiving, pilgrims and the turkey hotline. Please remember that most of these comments were made at 5:00 AM upon discovering that the turkey was still hard enough to cut diamonds. As accompaniment to the children's recital, I will play a recording of tribal drumming. If the children should mention that I don't own a recording of tribal drumming, or that tribal drumming sounds suspiciously like a frozen turkey in a clothes dryer, ignore them. They are dramatizing too much. 6. We toyed with the idea of ringing a dainty silver bell to announce the start of our feast. In the end, we chose to keep our traditional method. We've also decided against a formal seating arrangement. When the smoke alarm sounds, please gather around the table and sit where you like. In the spirit of harmony, we will ask the children to sit at a separate table... in a separate room... next door. 7. Now, I know you have all seen pictures of one person carving a turkey in front of a crowd of appreciative onlookers. This will not be happening at our dinner. For safety reasons, the turkey will be carved in a private ceremony. I stress "private" meaning: Do not, under any circumstances, enter the kitchen to laugh at me. Do not send small, unsuspecting children to check on my progress. I have an electric knife. The turkey is unarmed. It stands to reason that I will eventually win. When I do, we will eat. 8. I would like to take this opportunity to remind my young diners that "passing the rolls" is not a football play. Nor is it a request to bean your sister in the head with warm tasty bread. 9. Oh, and one reminder for the adults: For the duration of the meal, and especially while in the presence of you diners, we will refer to the giblet gravy by its lesser-known name: Cheese Sauce. If a young diner questions you regarding the origins or type of Cheese Sauce, plead ignorance. Cheese Sauce stains. 10. Before I forget, there is one last change. Instead of offering a choice among 12 different scrumptious desserts, we will be serving the traditional pumpkin pie, garnished with whipped cream and small fingerprints. In an interview with Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing Danziger said, "People are spending more money on holiday decorations this year than they did in 2006: Nearly $8 billion will be spent on holiday decorations, this represents a 4.5 percent gain over last year". According to Danziger, 90 percent of consumers decorate their homes for Christmas or Hanukkah. And the average household will spend about $119 on winter- season decorations this year". Wow! 8 billion dollars for Christmas decorations! I really can't picture in my mind how much money that is, but it is a larger pile of money than I have ever seen. What if no one bought Christmas decorations and instead spending their $119 (average per family) to help those less fortunate? Yes, I know that some of the department stores would go under because they are counting on the money from your Christmas decoration purchase, but just what if you did something different with the money? People all over the country are crying about the needs of the homeless, the poor, those without health care, the national debt, the cost of the war. There are many who are crying about the fact that the Social Security system is in shaky shape or that unemployment is the highest it's been in years. We all cry at one time or another about not having enough money and tend to blame others or the government, yet we as a nation spend $8 billion on Christmas decorations! Something just seems wrong about that to me! Let me say that I am not criticizing Christmas decorations! I love Christmas and love to decorate as can be seen by the 8 rubber maid containers of decorations we store each year. I also understand the fact that it is not a biblically based or authorized holiday. We celebrate it as a national and traditional holiday. But getting past that, what if for each dollar we spend on decorations we match it in giving to our churches, someone less fortunate, or a charity. Can you imagine all of the good that would be done in our world if we did that? Can you imagine all of the missionaries we could support with that money? Someone once said, "The church has the money to do anything we want to do, the problem is that it is still in our pockets". A couple of years ago Phil Ware wrote an article in which he said something like this, "Why don't you do something special for someone, without expecting to be patted on the back for it! Take food to someone and leave it on the doorstep with a note that simply says, 'from a friend of Jesus'." I thought about that suggestion and believe he is on to something we need to do far more than we do. My wife and I do practice this and it's one of the most rewarding things we do through the year. You see, it's almost impossible for us to not know or know of someone who is less fortunate than us! They may not necessarily be even really poor, but maybe just having a hard time at the moment and could use a little extra help, financially or spiritually. Eight billion dollars, $119 per family, are we really as hard up as we say as a country and as individuals, if we can spend money on lights, ribbon, Christmas trees, yard sculptures and all of that other stuff we put in boxes for most of the year? I wonder what the one that our nation is remembering at this time of year thinks when he sees what we do and how we spend our money? Understand that I am not telling you stop buying Christmas decorations, but rather to think seriously about at least matching that money you spend on that new string of lights with money you give to help others when and wherever you can. The apostle Paul had this to say about helping others in Galatians 6:9-10, "So don't get tired of doing what is good. Don't get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time. Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters." What about it? How about matching your purchases with an equal contribution either through your church, some organization or just get involved personally with someone else in need! "The Summer of Love" was gone, hippies were a rare sight, but there were still large pockets of narrow minds, filled with distrust, in rural America. More than once we met with proof of that in our travels across "the heartland of America." Our only home was our tent, our only "real furniture" the baby's crib, all piled atop the TravelAll. My husband and I were down on our luck, moving from one temporary job to another. Driving through Nebraska, a wheel bearing started to squeal. With no traffic, no sign of humanity, and fingers crossed, I drove 20 miles before I finally saw an exit. Barely slowing down, I took the offramp and saw a gas station ahead. There were no lights on, but I turned in anyway; there might at least be a pay phone. The owner was there, with his wife and kids. It was about 8:00 on a Saturday evening, and he was obviously homeward bound. But he walked up to my window and asked if he could help. I told him the problem, asked if there was a pay phone, and if we could use his station to do the repairs. He said he wasn't a mechanic, and had no tools. I assured him that, if I could only get the parts, I could do the repair work myself. "Well, if that's all you need ..." It was unbelievable! My truck went into the service bay, and he went off to get the parts I needed. Being farm country, that meant the International Harvester service and parts department was open even at night. By the time he came back with the bearing, I had the wheel and old bearing off, despite having few tools to work with. But there was a problem. Because it was harvest time, the IH dealer had sold the last race for the bearing, and a bearing without a race is worthless! My panic must have shown on my face, because he quickly told me that he knew another place to look for the race. He made a number of phone calls, then came to tell me the owner of the parts store would meet him there. All he needed was the race so they could be certain they were getting the right part. I quickly handed it to him, then went to work installing the bearing. It was close to 11 p.m. before the race had been pressed into the wheel, and everything put back into working order. When I asked how much we owed, he refused to take even a penny more than the original $20 I'd given him for parts. For a man who "had no tools," he accomplished a lot that night: He called in favors from people all over town, played "go-fer" for hours, found the parts, gave me a safe place to work, and even fed us. Can you imagine what the disciples must have been feeling in that moment. Imagine being Peter. Jesus comes to you to wash your feet. What!?!? Wash my feet??? This is Jesus! You have followed Him for three years. You have soaked three years in the most revolutionary teachings. You have witnessed Him heal blind, crippled, paralyzed, diseased people. You've seen broken people's lives changed. Demons cast out. 5000 men fed with a boy's lunch - two fish and five barley loaves. At the command, "Come," from Jesus...you walked on water...think about that. Come-on Jesus! Wash my feet!??? You were there with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. You heard the actual voice of God, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Wash my feet! How crazy does that sound? Jesus assuming the role of a slave...a servant...washing my nasty, sandal wearing, dirt road covered feet. Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me." John 13:8. Wow! "No part with Me." That will stop you cold and make you think. We all need Jesus to clean us. Back up to verse 6. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord are You washing my feet?" Verse 7, Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." How many times do we find ourselves in this very place. Things look wrong, out of place...this isn't the way it is supposed to be. It's out of the natural order. "Lord are You washing my feet?".....Are You working in this area of my life? This trial, these circumstances ...are You washing me? If only Jesus would come with a towel and a basin of water and wash me. But to mess with my life. I don't really want this. I just want to do my thing. It's not that big a deal... not really. I'm with You, Lord, but let me alone in this area or that. Not my feet Lord. It won't be a towel, nor a basin of water. What is the Lord using to cleanse you? Take a deep look at the things in your life. Ask Jesus to show you the towel and basin He is using for you. It will be people, circumstances, issues...the things of life. Jesus' goal is not to take these things and use against you; but to release you from what you don't see as binding, into what He knows is for your best. Psalm 138:8 puts it so wonderfully, "The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands." Sometimes things don't look right, they look crazy. But, trust the Lord. He knows the plans He has for you. "Plans of good and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." Put your faith and trust in Jesus and follow His leading. Open and closed doors. "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this." After what? After you stop surrendering to the circumstances and surrender to the Lord of them. To cover the awkward moment Dr. Mayfield started asking questions, "How long have you worked here?" "I've worked here almost since the place opened," the maid replied. "What can you tell me about the history of this place?" he asked. "I don't think I can tell you anything, but I could show you something." With that, she took his hand and led him down to the basement under the oldest section of the building. She pointed to one of what looked like small prison cells, their iron bars rusted with age, and said, "That's the cage where they used to keep Annie." "Who's Annie?" the doctor asked. "Annie was a young girl who was brought in here because she was incorrigible - which means nobody could do anything with her. She'd bite and scream and throw her food at people. The doctors and nurses couldn't even examine her or anything. I'd see them trying with her spitting and scratching at them. I was only a few years younger than her myself and I used to think, 'I sure would hate to be locked up in a cage like that.' I wanted to help her, but I didn't have any idea what I could do. I mean, if the doctors and nurses couldn't help her, what could someone like me do? "I didn't know what else to do, so I just baked her some brownies one night after work. The next day I brought them in. I walked carefully to her cage and said, 'Annie I baked these brownies just for you. I'll put them right here on the floor and you can come and get them if you want.' Then I got out of there just as fast as I could because I was afraid she might throw them at me. But she didn't. She actually took the brownies and ate them. "After that, she was just a little bit nicer to me when I was around. And sometimes I'd talk to her. Once, I even got her laughing. One of the nurses noticed this and she told the doctor. They asked me if I'd help them with Annie. I said I would if I could. So that's how it came about that every time they wanted to see Annie or examine her, I went into the cage first and explained and calmed her down and held her hand. Which is how they discovered that Annie was almost blind." After they'd been working with her for about a year - and it was tough sledding with Annie - the Perkins institute for the Blind opened its doors. They were able to help her and she went on to study and became a teacher herself. Annie came back to the Tewksbury Institute to visit, and to see what she could do to help out. At first, the Director didn't say anything and then he thought about a letter he'd just received. A man had written to him about his daughter. She was absolutely unruly - almost like an animal. He'd been told she was blind and deaf as well as 'deranged.' He was at his wit's end, but he didn't want to put her in an asylum. So he wrote here to ask if we knew of anyone - any teacher - who would come to his house and work with his daughter. And that is how Annie Sullivan became the lifelong companion of Helen Keller. When Helen Keller received the Nobel Prize, she was asked who had the greatest impact on her life and she said, "Annie Sullivan." But Annie said, "No Helen. Tiffany (Pfafman) Parks gave birth to her fifth son, Sawyer, on Oct. 29. Sawyer's older brothers were excited about making phone calls to tell family and friends the good news. With their father and grandmother they divided up the list. Wade, 6, said enthusiastically, "I want to call Mom!" After a second of thought he added, "I guess she already knows!" Jennie's 3-year-old niece, Lauren, came into Jennie's room to wake her up. As Jennie was struggling for consciousness, she told Lauren what a cute face she has. Lauren giggled. "Can I have your face?" Jennie asked. Lauren replied, "Noooo." Jennie continued, "But it's such a cute face, and I'd like to have it. We can switch faces!" Lauren said, "NO!" Jennie asked why not. While getting dressed for school, Breann told her mother she was cold. Breann said, "I have birdie bumps all over my arm." (She meant goose bumps!) His grandmother told him that since he now has two missing teeth, he needs to tell Santa Claus, "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!" Max's reply? "But what I really, truly want are some Legos!" -- Sandi Pound (maternal grandmother) of Lehigh, Florida Kenzie, 5, has been around hunting and fishing all her life because her dad Thomas is an avid sportsman. It's not unusual for her to have her picture taken with his trophies when he bags a big buck or a prize bass. A few weeks ago Thomas was bow hunting and got a very nice buck and Kenzie wasn't there when he got home so he got it ready to take to the taxidermist without her picture being made (with the body attached). When she got home all that was there was the head without the neck even attached. She still insisted on having her picture made like always. Fortunately Wendy hears that quite often! -- Wendy Fenner of Las Vegas Dennis, his wife, their son and two grandsons went to a local airport to see a World War II bomber that was on display. They explained to the boys that the plane was over 60 years old. On the way back Dalton, the youngest son, asked, "PawPaw, how old are you?" Dennis replied that he was 63. Dalton responded, "Wow, PawPaw, you are really old!" Dylan, the older grandson, quickly came to his grandfather's defense. "PawPaw's not old," he said. Judy's daughter told her three girls, who are adopted (bi-racial) sisters, that Great-Grandma was coming over with Grandma this time. Angela asked, "Is she the one with the white Afro who fell asleep last time?" Laci remarked that was the school where her cousin Vicki went. Joyce said, "Yes, that's right." Laci thoughtfully replied, "That's the school for grown up kids." Nana asked Cathy how she was liking having a double bed as she has a bigger bed at home. Cali, 6, was listening in on the conversation and said, "It's not a double bed, it's a whole bed." -- Cathy of Dillard, Georgia On Oct. 16 when Sharen Ramsey was substitute teaching in Teresa Kloeper's kindergarten class at South Side School, Sharen asked them to name their favorite food made with apples. One student said apple pie was his favorite. Sharen agreed that it was one of her favorites, too, and she said that she likes to warm it in the microwave and put something on top of it. "Can you guess what I put on it?" Sharen asked. One student said, "Cool Whip?" Sharen said, "That would be good, but this is something you get out of the freezer." A little boy in the back waved his hand fervently and said, "I know, I know! AN ICEPACK!" -- Sharen Ramsey of Kendallville, Indiana Josh's mother was hospitalized. Because of all the illness going around, the 5-year-old had to have gloves and a mask to visit her. ' Bailey, 9, spent the night at his great Aunt Sandy's house with his cousin Matthew. At dinner, Bailey choked on a rather big bite of steak. Aunt Sandy, a registered nurse, grabbed him and gave him the Heimlich. When Bailey came home on Sunday he told Mom about choking. He said it was awesome how Aunt Sandy grabbed and gave him the hind -leg maneuver. When his mom corrected him and asked, "You mean the Heimlich maneuver?" he was adamant that it was called the hind-leg because Aunt Sandy's leg was kicking out beHIND her when she squeezed him. -- Ann McLain (aunt of Bailey) of Wisconsin Here is another story from Ann. When her nephew Elias was 7 his family moved to Menasha from Milwaukee. Ann had moved several days before that from Oshkosh to Menasha. When she stopped over to say hi, he and his sister Imani asked if they could sleepover at Ann's house. She tried to explain to them that she needed time to unpack. Ann concluded, "You guys can sleep over in the future." Elias replied, "Wow, Aunty Ann, you live in the future?" It's something that we do each year for all to benefit, Everyone has placed a little note inside of it. We all named it our "thankful box" and what the notes will say, Are all the things we're thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day. One of us will read the notes as we all sit around, And slowly read what each note says and what we've written down. We do not sign the little notes or put our names on it, But as the little notes are read we know just who they fit. Sometimes the notes are thankful for a loving mom and dad, Sometimes the notes are thankful for a victory that they had. Sometimes the notes are thankful for a husband or a wife, Sometimes the notes are thankful for a new start with their life. A new one in the family will draw a note or two, Especially if the stork has brought it to our family new. Each year we read the little notes and then we laugh and cry, Realizing that this year has almost passed us by. The year is drawing to a close and there has been some change, Some thankful things are near to us but some are out of range. This year as we read the notes they seemed to ring out clear, We didn't take for granted many things we had this year. Some things that were read from the notes we never heard before, It seemed we took them all for granted until this new war. Thankful for our freedom... yes, the words now come alive. Thankful for our way of life and not just to survive. Thankful that we have a home with friends and family, Living free and just enjoying all that we can see. Having laws and government that still protect our rights, Having those in charge so we sleep peaceful through our nights. Yes, this year has made our thankful box more meaningful, But the last note found inside our box made life seem beautiful. Scribbled in a crayon were some printed words in blue, We knew one of the kids had done it, which one, no one knew.
