We wanted to let you know that we have added our newest Teaching of the Month to iTunes and TruthOrTradition.com Title: Let's Get Together (January 2010) God tells us in the book of Hebrews that we should “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Heb. 10:24). Then in the immediate context He adds in verse 25, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.…” We believe you will be inspired by this teaching as Dan Gallagher spurs us to consider three fundamental aspects of why we should meet: to reach the lost of the world for Christ, to raise up to maturity those who come to him, and to develop greater relationships and connections with others in the Body of Christ. Dan also discusses various meeting models (the small home church setting and the larger congregational meetings), as well as provides insight into how to reach others through your various spheres of influence. This teaching is a great encouragement to get connected to others in the Body of Christ. First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were OK. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms. WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them! Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! We had the good fortune to grow up as kids in America, before the government regulated so much of our lives "for our own good." Give thanks, for such an age will never occur again. -- author unknown ===================================================================== >-->From CupO'Cheer: , ,nNN ,nNNNN' ,nNNNNNN; ;NNNNNNNN ;NNNNNNNN' ;NNNNNNNN; .NNNNNNNNN NNNNNNNNNb. ;NNNNNNNNNNNNn. ,NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNn. ;NNNNNNNNN' ""YNNNNNNn. Carolee Hazard, in line behind the distressed woman, graciously offers to cover the tab! Jenni goes home and sends Carolee a check for 300 dollars, and suggests that her benefactress treat herself to a massage with the leftover cash. Carolee turned to her online Facebook community for advice on what they thought she should do with the 93 dollar gift. The idea Carolee choose was to donate the surplus to a local food bank. Carolee not only sent in the money that Jenni had given her to Second Harvest Food Bank, but matched that amount herself. So did a Facebook friend. And another. And another. Kids have pitched in 93 cents. And since the story has been on Facebook’s own site, others are donating what they can. So far, over 10,000 dollars of donations have come in from Iran, Israel, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Australia, Hungary, Sri Lanka and beyond to feed the hungry through local food banks. Carolee has started the “93 Dollar Club” on Facebook, where people across the globe can easily read the story and comment on the good karma phenomenon. There are links on that page where people may donate to their own food banks close to them. Says Carolee: “It’s been incredible to see this grow and how excited people are getting. I have told the story to my friends and they say it gives them goose bumps.” Carolee and Jenni are no longer strangers. They’ve become Facebook friends and they’ve made a real-world connection that will likely stay with them the rest of their lives. Jenni remembers that she was at a “spiritual low” that day in the grocery store, and Carolee’s ‘tap on the shoulder’ reminded her of God and good people. “My faith in humanity is just huge,” Jenni said. “It’s just a reminder that there are these amazingly awesome people out there. And it also reminds me of how good I want to be.” Being kind to strangers isn’t new for Carolee. She sometimes pays strangers’ bridge tolls, just to see their surprised faces in her rearview mirror. as seen in http://www.helpothers.org/ -<>- >THE ROARING LION ,w. ,YWMMw ,M , _.---.._ __..---._.'MMMMMw,wMWmW, _.-"" """ YP"WMMMMMMMMMb, .-' __.' .' Shirley and I had been married just a few years when we had a minor fuss. It was no big deal but we were both pretty agitated at the time. I got in the car and drove around for about an hour to cool off. Then when I was on the way home, a very attractive girl drove up beside me in her car and smiled. She was obviously flirting with me. Then she slowed down, looked back, and turned onto a side street. I knew she was inviting me to follow her. I didn't take the bait. I just went on home and made up with Shirley. But I thought later about how vicious Satan had been to take advantage of the momentary conflict between us. The Scripture refers to the devil as "a roaring lion... seeking whom he might devour" (1 Peter 5:8 KJV). I can see how true that description really is. He knew his best oppor- tunity to damage our marriage was during the hour or two when we were irritated with each other. That is typical of his strategy. He'll lay a trap for you, too, and it'll probably come at a time of vulnerability. Beautiful, enticing, forbidden fruit will be offered to you when your "hunger" is greatest. If you are foolish enough to reach for it, your fingers will sink into the rotten mush on the back side. That's the way sin operates in our lives. It promises everything. It delivers nothing but disgust and heartache. Someone said it this way: All you need to grow the finest crop of weeds is a tiny crack in your sidewalk. as seen in Laugh & Lift at http://www.laughandlift.com -<>- (.,------...__ _.'" `. .' .' `, `. `. ` . .' .'/''--...__`. \ . .--.`. Mike had been in Florida for five months working for an Internet start-up company. We were excited about the trip because we had seen him only five times in five months, and Kallie missed her dad terribly. As usual on the Charlotte-to-Miami flight, the plane was totally full. I had noticed a troop of Boy Scouts at the gate and commented to my daughter that if anything happened, we would be OK with all those Scouts on our flight! Little did I know.... Because we did not get our boarding passes until we arrived at the gate, Kallie and I could not get seats together and were separated by the aisle. That wasn't such a big deal, except that Kallie was nervous about the trip and had counted on my reading to her the whole way. Trying to read across the aisle would be a challenge. When the two passengers who shared my row boarded the plane, I asked if they would switch places with Kallie and me, so that we could be together and so that she could sit next to the window. They refused, saying they thought they should stay in their assigned seats. Meanwhile, a mother and her three children were in a panic several rows ahead of us. There had been a mistake in their boarding passes, the whole family had been split up. The passengers in her row also refused to move elsewhere. The mother could hold her baby, but her 6-year-old son and his older brother had been scattered around the plane. She was very concerned about the younger boy sitting with strangers. She was in tears, yet nobody offered to help her. Suddenly the Scout leader stood up and said, "Ma'am, I think we can help you." He then spent five minutes rearranging his group so that adequate space was available for the family. The boys followed his directions cheerfully and without complaint, and the mother's relief was obvious. Kallie, however, was beginning to panic at the thought of not being next to a window or her mother. I told her that there wasn't anything I could do; we would have to sit where we were. Amazingly, the man sitting next to the Scoutmaster (not a Scout himself), turned around to me and asked, "Would you and your daughter like our seats?" referring to himself and the Scoutmaster. He said he was cramped in the window seat and would really prefer the aisle. We traded seats and continued our trip, very much relieved to be together and watch the scenery from Kallie's window seat. Would that man have offered us his seat if the Scouts hadn't done so for the mom and her children? I don't know. But I do know that kindness is contagious, and good deeds beget good deeds! -<>- >Easy? Easy is to get a place in someone's address book. Difficult is to get a place in someone's heart. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath. Because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses, and they used less material. But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears and on occasion, was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron. -<>- / / / .--. / / / / / \ / / / | /a / / / / / \ |/ / / / .-. / ) | / / / / __) / / / `. .--. / / / \| @( / | \ \ / // / / / / / .' \-/ / |\ \_|_\__ / -' / / / / | \' / | \___/)--) / / / / / \ \ / | | \ \ .-' / / / / \/) | | \.-' \ / (____\ /U\ _.---------'| `------._____________________/ \ \\__)-------._____ -- '`--` VK >Bad Weather And Good Hearts It is amazing how even the worst times can be used by our loving God to bring out the best in us. I saw ample evidence of this recently when a fast moving Winter storm dumped an incredible two and a half feet of snow here. Cars were buried, businesses and schools were closed, roads were impassible, people were stranded, and tree limbs were snapped taking down power lines with them. A state of emergency was declared and it looked like the bad weather had beaten us all down forever. In the mist of all this misery, though, the best in everyone emerged. We slowly came out of our houses, grabbed our snow shovels, and went to work. We started by shoveling out our drives and cars. We greeted neighbors doing the same. Then we started helping each other whenever we could. Snow blowers were shared. Paths were dug out so little dogs could have a place to walk and relieve themselves. Anyone with an extra snow plow attached it to their truck and cleared side drives while the state workers cleared the main roads. People who still had electricity thanked God for it and then went out to help those who had lost theirs. Electric line workers were tireless in their efforts to restore as many homes power as quickly as possible and every person whose home was lit back up smiled with a new appreciation for the energy they once took for granted. Families gathered around stoves, hugged each other in blankets, and looked out on the majestic mountains covered in snow. Then when the warm sun returned after days of cold they greeted it like a long lost friend. They watched the beautiful sunrise too like it was for the very first time. All of this gave me a new respect for all the tough times and bad weather I have faced in my own life. I see now that God is always with us in our Winter nights as well as our Summer days. I see too that our love and joy sometimes grow warmest when life is at its coldest. ~ Joseph J. Bernal thought the kitten (believed to be about seven weeks old) was already dead when he spotted her in an alley, whilst going about his business as a service technician for Culligan. Because of the predicted persistence of cold weather Bernal was just finishing the job of insulating a customer's water filter system when he noticed the poor kitty in the middle of the alley. "I thought it was dead, really," Bernal said. "I picked her up and she was just stiff. Its eyes were all matted together. It looked like she was pretty well gone. I started rubbing it really quick. I had a toboggan on and put it in there and set it on the floorboard down by the heater," he said. Soon, the exhausted kitten started meowing. Bernal, thought about taking the kitten home, but decided he should take her to an expert to be on the safe side. Through the Plainview Humane Society, Bernal contacted Mrs. Phelps who has cared for dozens of injured and sick animals over the years. When she heard about the poor little kitten Mrs. Phelps quickly headed over. By the time she arrived they had managed to feed the kitten some milk, but although the signs were good the kitten's future was still far from certain, as Mrs. Phelps noted. "She was frozen stiff, her back legs couldn't move and she was struggling to catch her breath." Said Mrs. Phelps "I figured she would die before I got her home." Mrs. Phelps and her family persisted, keeping her warm, washing her face and giving her small amounts of milk though an eyedropper "She got real excited about the milk," Mrs. Phelps said. After a few hours and soon she was eating solid food and making good progress. The kitten continued her recovery, and within a few days seemed fine. She is now reportedly a regular cute and fluffy kitten and you wouldn't even know the circumstances under which Mrs. Phelps had acquired her. ==================================================================== >--->From Our Friend PatH :) _ ______ / `'. ,-"` '. / /'-.'. ___ .' \ \/ '.\.'
