I think of all that he had to go through and suffer for us. Today we have an excellent teaching from CES that helps define this Sacrifice of our Lord so we can better understand and appreciate it: >From TruthOrTradition: >The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ By John Lynn In this article, I want to focus on the definition of a “sacrifice.” We will examine what it was that Jesus sacrificed, what were the benefits to him (and thereby to us) for his doing so, and what it will look like for us to follow in his steps. I think it will become clear that we too should be making sacrifices in our own lives for the good of others. 1 Corinthians 5:7 and 8 (NKJV) [1] (7) Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. (8) Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. There is much figurative language in the above verses, but the point I want us to notice here is that the truth in verse 7—that Jesus gave his life for our sins—is the basis for the action that verse 8 encourages us to take—to live our lives with sincerity and truth. As Scripture says, Jesus Christ is the example for each of us, and we are therefore to walk in his steps (1 Pet. 2:21). Let us look at a contemporary dictionary definition of sacrifice: “The surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.” Now that is provocative. Think about it—this connotes a value system in which one thing, while deemed valuable and thus not easily let go of, is not considered as valuable as another thing in one’s overall estimation. This involves the exercise of one’s free will and the power we each have to make choices. What was Jesus called to sacrifice? His very life. When asked how it was that she has lived so long, one 91-year-old woman replied, "I think God is testing the patience of my relatives." When is "too old"? At what age do we give up? At 91, Eamon de Valera served as president of Ireland. At 90, Pablo Picasso still drew and engraved. At 89, Arthur Rubinstein gave one of his greatest recitals in New York's Carnegie Hall, and Pablo Casals, at 88, still performed cello concerts. Mazzella I was in a local grocery store the other day when suddenly I heard the sound of breaking glass behind me. I turned around to see what had happened. A young mother had turned away from her shopping cart for a second to look in one of the freezers. That second was all it took for her growing, baby boy to test out his new found ability to grab and lift things from his seat in the cart. Unfortunately, the big jar of spaghetti sauce was more than he could handle. I smiled when I walked back to help and saw the look of utter surprise on his face. His arms were still outstretched where the jar had been a few seconds before. On the floor below the puddle of red was slowly oozing across the aisle. After making sure that both Mom and baby were alright I headed down the aisle to get help from a store employee. As I glanced back at them, though, I saw something that truly warmed my heart. The baby had finally taken his eyes off the shattered jar and looked up at his Mom. Instead of scolding him or even giving him an angry look she smiled down at him with eyes full of gentle understanding and unconditional love. Her tender gaze and kind smile never changed either not even when a friend gave her some good natured teasing about the mess. I knew then that this Mom was going to give her son a lifetime full of laughter and love. I think that God must smile down on us with that same look at times. We are His beloved Children and yet as hard as we try we often make a mess of things too. We want to learn to love. Still, we stumble, fall, let important things slip through our fingers, and even break a few hearts along the way. God never gives up on us, however. He forgives us and fills our hearts, souls, and lives with His gentle understanding and unconditional love. May we all learn to love each other as He loves us. May we all learn to live our lives in joy, laughter, love, and understanding. -<>- ,__ / \ | '. | ; \ \| | '.__\ _/ .' These blooms have lasted so long this year," my wife said. "I hadn't really thought about it, but you are right. As much as I love Lilacs, they come and go so fast," I said. It has been incredibly exciting this year here in my back yard. Our Lilac tree has produced the most blooms I have ever seen. The scent is so wonderful that I spend a lot of time just standing on our small deck breathing it all in. Many of the branches are hollow and cracked leaving me to believe it has seen many Springs. A few winters ago one of the biggest branches crashed to the ground under the weight of melting snow. It broke my heart. I guess I wasn't expecting much from the old thing this year. But it is magnificent! Since we have been experiencing so much rain lately the flowers have become heavier. The once tall bush seems to be under a lot of pressure. I can relate to that. There are big gaps because the branches are lower. Sadly, today I noticed the first bunch of flowers turning brown. It won't be long until they are all gone. But here's what I've learned from it. Some people are like fragrant flowers. They come into our lives ever so briefly and leave behind a scent that remains embedded in our being. They brighten your day by just having had contact with them even if for a moment. If kindness would have scent it would remind you of them. Like when I smell pine, all the best Christmas memories rush through my mind. When I smell roses I think of romantic, moon filled evenings. Some people, having given so much to you, remain a part of who you are forever. You cannot possibly go through a day without thinking about them. Their beautiful spirit gently nudges your heart each time you hear their name. The very thought of them stirs within your soul like the sweet fragrance of a thousand roses. Loved ones who have passed on, having given their lives to you, having stayed in bloom through a life time of eternal Spring, are like these Lilacs. Although my heart is saddened having discovered that they are dying, I will not remember them that way. I will forever see a thousand blooms each time I think of them. In the coldest, darkest days of the winter of my life, the memory of them will get me through it all. Even the slightest fragrance, a wisp of "almost there again," will bring a smile to my face and my heart will pound remembering the love. Oh, God thank you not only for the beauty of the people you bring into my life, but for the lingering fragrance and everlasting memories of ever having loved them at all. Loving them and believing in You, means I will have "Spring Forever in my heart." Bob Perks, Copyright © -- from 'I Believe In You' (Bob@BobPerks.com) -<>- >The Broadcasting Station George Washington Carver observed, "I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in." But it is sometimes hard to hear the message when it is broadcast by equipment that is dirty, corroded and abused. Carver was born 150 years ago, before we used terms like toxic waste, air pollution, global warming and deforestation. Today, we have figured out that we need to take good care of the broadcasting station if we are to hear what the Divine is saying. This is a beautiful and fragile planet we live on. As much as we can fall in love with magnificent sunsets and pristine landscapes, few people have ever experienced its beauty as acutely as those who've seen it from afar. Senator Jake Garn was one of those privileged people. He observed earth aboard Discovery Space Shuttle and wrote of that experience in "Parade Magazine" (11-3-85). "I know now what if feels like to be out of this world," he said. "The experience is exhilarating, breathtaking, awesome. No. Those words aren't strong enough; space flight is indescribable." Listen to these words from his space diary: "I was overcome by the beauty of the earth below. I don't think the words exist to convey what it's like to see the earth from space. The curve of the earth, the swirling eddies, the patterns of clouds marbling the surface above the brilliantly blue color of the water and the blue-green of the land.the sheer beauty of the earth and the excitement of being in a position to see it made this the greatest experience of my life. Using binoculars, I once counted 22 discernible layers of blue in the band of sunrise color that would be seen from earth simply as blue." This is indeed a beautiful and fragile planet. But it's changing. And we humans are the cause of much of it. George Burns once quipped, "I can remember when the air was clean and sex was dirty." All right, he lived to be 100, but we can bring those days of clean air back. We can live simply and responsibly. We can walk gently upon the face of the earth. And with our broadcasting station once again in good order, I think I know what we'll hear God saying: "Thank you." ~ Steve Goodier ~ -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment Men Invented Everything http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3231.htm Miror http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3232.htm Monkey with a death wish http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3233.htm movie http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3234.htm muziek http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3235.htm NewMouse http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3236.htm plunge off the new river bridge http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3254.htm A Reporter Can Watch http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3255.htm Pool http://www.buffalosjokes.com/3256.htm To Subscribe send a blank email to: the-inspired-buffalo-subscribe@yahoogroups.com ==================================================================== \ / \\ // _______ )\-/( (M==M=M=)/e e\ .-'"-\=N==N/( =Y= ) .-'(___.-'\M=M/ /`---'\ (______(____)=(_/ /___\ \_ (M==M=M==M=M==M'''M=M=```M) \=N=N==N=N==N=N==N=N==N=/ \M==M=M==M=M==M==M==M=/ \N=N==N=N==N=N==N=N=/ jgs \M==M==M=M==M=M==M/ `---------------' >Thanks for Your Inspiration Story Editor: by Ward Miller Joyce Schowalter New York, USA My mother was a remarkable woman. Born on a farm in Wisconsin in 1897, her high school graduation picture shows a beautiful young lady with long brown hair and blue eyes. She attended college in Milwaukee with Golda Meier (Israel's first premier). One of my earliest recollections, when I was about 3, is of a bitter cold day in 1932, the middle of the Great Depression. A man knocked on our back door, and asked my mother for something to eat, as he hadn't eaten in three days. Mom said she was cooking stew and would give him some. "But as my husband isn't here, you must eat on the back porch." She gave him a heaping plate of stew plus two slices of bread. Later he knocked again. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he handed Mom the fork and plate -- as clean as if washed -- saying, "God bless you, Madam." At that moment I learned what a compassionate person my mother was. At age 21, in 1918, my mother began employment with the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). She was assigned to a new facility in northern Georgia. She, a Yankee in the Deep South, was assigned alone to create YWCA programs for a doubting small community. She told stories about "those Y days", about wonderful people who welcomed her into the community. When my sister became a Girl Scout, Mom was the troop leader. Soon she was president of our school PTA. In her later years, my mother established Rossville, Georgia's Garden Club, the Professional Women's club, the town's first lending library (which she served for 50 years) and other "firsts". There was quite a turnout at her funeral in 1990, when she died at 93. At the wake my sister and I moved among her many friends, exchanging remembrances. At one point we saw a stranger turn away from the casket with tears on his face. We approached him and my sister asked, "Did you know my mother well?" He replied, "I guess so. I owe my life to her!" He told us that when he was a young child, in 1918, his family of seven all came down with the flu. The "new lady from the YWCA" heard about their illness and came to help. This 21-year-old shy girl, from almost a thousand miles away, stayed in their house with them, caring for each when they could not get out of bed or cook their own meals. He said, "We would never have made it without her loving care." Amazingly, the night before I had read a brief account of that very incident in one of my mother's diaries. Recently reading that a "bird" flu may have been responsible for the 40 to 50 million flu deaths worldwide in 1918 and 1919, I was reminded of my personal connection to that time. Today when I hear about the avian flu, I have a warm feeling about my wonderful mother. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From SermondFodder: _ \`\ _ \ \ /\ \ \ V /\/ ___ /. .\ .'__(>@<) =\_T_/= /.' /|\ / \ || || (( )) ||oO0oO|| {/\) (/\ |-=-=-=-| __\ /__ \=-=-=-=/ jgs (____/^\____) '=-=-=' Q. I thought it was a good question. After all, the appendix served no real purpose. I was never much of a science student, but I remember how it was described. It was an organ for which there was no apparent function. Unless you count needing something to burst so you could have emergency surgery. It was one of the trendy ways to mock the concept of God. Guess what? Scientists and doctors are now saying the appendix serves a useful function in immune protection. It is a place for gut bacteria to reside and helps prevent diarrhea. So much for my science teachers. It now seems perhaps science does not know everything. Of course, real scientists will tell you that up front. So why would anyone use science to try to disprove the existence of God? It appears that there is a reason why we humans have an appendix. I am not really surprised. I believe God made us and that He knew what He was doing. Am I simplistic? Maybe, but I think the appendix question is like many of the other things in my life. There are things that I do not understand. But I need to trust that someone does. This world, and my life, makes sense when I trust there is someone who knows me and who understands everything going in my life. For me, that someone is God. Most of you reading this have made that same decision. This just reinforces your conviction. But perhaps you know someone who wrestles with the concept of God. Maybe this will give you something to talk about with them. Or send them this article. Or send them to www.hopeforlife.org. Or have them write me. I would love to discuss where I have found hope, meaning, and purpose. It is not that I have all the answers … and not just about my appendix. I do believe I know who does have the answers. After all, he knew what he was doing with the appendix. I believe that God knew what he was doing when he created me. >From http://www.heartlight.org/articles/200803/20080312_Science.html =================================================================== ...THE FIRST EASTER BUNNY... by Francine M.
