What if someone told you that your dreams were attainable goals, waiting to be caught and tethered? On Thursday, I opened an e-newsletter called, Create Your Own Luck. The author's mission statement is very clear -- dedicated to helping you to attract more good fortune and blessings, with God's help, into your life, love, and work. This particular issue's favorite luck-building quote was from Jean de La Fontaine, "Help yourself and heaven will help you." Her story emphasized that our dreams and desires are very possible. You are not to give up, but to pursue with great faith that which you truly desire. Once the plan is in action, if it is in accordance with His will, you will be surprised how miraculously the pieces come together. Within two days another message came to me. This time, from the pages of the Daily Guideposts 2003 Devotional. In a memorial tribute, Fred Bauer quoted from a piece Arthur Gordon, the former editorial director, had once published. Gordon's article entitled, Be Bold and Mighty Forces Will Come to Your Aid, urged readers to step out in faith and take chances. I sat up and took notice because I believe that when I am confronted by an outpouring of messages of a similar nature, I am being nudged to move. I try to follow those leadings as best I can -- right after I dig my heels OUT of the dirt. This time I can clearly sort out the personal application of these messages. You see, I am afraid to attempt the national market with my writing. I have been encouraged to submit my articles and poems to major publications by my fellow writers, spiritual leaders and my mentor. But, I assumed seeing my work in print on the national level is an impossible goal. What are the odds? How many writers -- fair, good or brilliant, actually make it to the top? As these thoughts take form in my mind, I recall another nudge that perhaps was the precursor of all these messages. Hindsight -- the perfect vision -- clearly shows the path was being paved even before I realized. The cover of the January 2003 issue of Writer's Magazine arrived in December stating, "2003 -- This is YOUR year." The bold title jumped out at me, like it was speaking to me alone. The words were hammered home by the cover artwork -- an artistic outline of a human displayed with his body filled with blue skies and puffy clouds. Its arms are stretched high toward heaven and its face turned upward toward the sun. Blue skies and puffy clouds have always appeared as a sign of blessings in my meditations. Like a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, they have signaled the approaching of abundance and joy. I cannot ignore the signs and messages. So, with equal parts of excitement and fear, I will forge ahead. I will be bold and push past my anxiety and I will stop the negative, undermining assumptions. Watch out New York Times, heads up O Magazine -- you are in for a treat! You may be saying, "Nice for her, but what does this mean for me?" My messages came one at a time, in perfectly timed intervals. The Creator knew what I needed to move forward -- a barrage of hints. Take heart, friends, here is your first spark. Or perhaps you only need this one -- a neatly packaged message to rev you up. Still, the message is the same -- Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid. Think about it. No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more "just one minute." Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used up and goes away, never to return before we can say good-bye, say "I love you." So while we have it, it's best we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage.....And old cars... And children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a sister- in-law after divorce. There are just some things that make us happy, no matter what. Life is important, like people we know who are special.. And so, we keep them close! I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'! Then I sent it to the people I think of in the same way... Now it's your turn to send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including the person who sent it, if you feel that way. Suppose one morning you never wake up, do all your friends know you love them? I was thinking...I could die today, tomorrow or next week, and I wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that needed rekindling or three words needing to be said. Let every one of your friends know you love them. Even if you think they don't love you back, you would be amazed at what those three little words and a smile J can do. And just in case I'm gone tomorrow. I LOVE YA!!! Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:5-6 “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” Proverbs 12:25 “A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.” Proverbs 15:30 Jay is a Taco Bell restaurant manager in Tennessee. This is his story. It is a beautiful example of the difference we can make in people’s lives. We have a long-time regular customer as many restaurants do. I have noticed her here two or three times a week for about the last fifteen months. In the past, she was routinely not very happy. “Food is too hot, food is too cold, prices are too high, not enough cheese, and the table she wanted was not clean….” You get the picture. One day about a year ago, as I was coming in to work, I walked in the door of the restaurant, and I noticed her eating in the lobby. I wondered why she was unhappy. I sat my briefcase down, took a cinnamon twist from the line and headed to her table. We had a brief pleasant conversation. During the months since, I have not known her to complain about anything. Doris and I have become casual friends and enjoy sharing with each other about our faith, our family and other activities. Most of all, our team enjoys seeing her now as well. The timing of my decision to share this with you is this. Over the past few months I have learned that Doris is in need of a kidney transplant and her husband suffers from terminal cancer. Yesterday she came in very excited, her doctor had just called her with the news that a match had been found. Doris had her kidney transplant last night. She told me the first place she wanted to go was here to tell us the good news. This means more to me than any other form of recognition or compensation. You see, I could have thought of her as just another person that you can’t make happy and she could have thought of us as just another place wanting her money, but I saw her as an opportunity to show God’s love for people. We are far from being the perfect operation, nor do we make everyone happy, but our number one goal is to show people love. If we can offer them a warm smile of encour- agement or a kind word to lift their spirits along with their meal, maybe they will leave, as Doris did that first day, feeling better than they did before they came in. Everyday we get to choose how we will respond to people. We can return hurt for hurt, or we can be the voice of grace, reflecting the love of God to all those we meet along the way. as seen in The Bread -<>- . !__________! . _______ /_\ |____ ____| /_\ |__*__| __|__ {____}{____} __|__ |__*__| __|_*_|__%%%%%%%%%%%%__|_*_|__|__*__|__ | | %%%%%%%%%%%%%% | | |/ \| %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% /||||||||||||||||||||\ ||||||||||||||||||lc|| >LISTENING IN THE DARK (By Kenneth L. Pierpont) [Edited] Years ago in my room at Moody I would pray at night with my roommate Paul Davidheizer. We would get in our beds and turn off the light, then we would each pray. After we prayed we would usually talk for a while. Often I would still be talking after I discovered that Paul was asleep. He was a great guy but I could just talk longer than he could listen. I am almost always the first one up in the morning around our place. So when bedtime comes for my daughter Hope, who is four and enjoys the luxury of sleeping in, she usually has another good half hour of energy left in her day. She doesn't wind down slowly at the end of the day. She finishes her day like a runner straining for the tape. She always has a little burst, a little sprint to the finish. I know in a perfect world parents put their children to sleep at night. That's not always the way it works at our house. The other night I was exhausted and eager to sleep. I had an early start the next day and a full agenda. I got into bed. But Hope was in no mood to sleep. She had a place of her own but she came in our room and jumped in bed with us and refused to lie down. For a few minutes she used the bed for a trampoline until I made her stop. "Lie down right now and go to sleep Hope." I warned her, and I turned off the light. She lay down but my warning and the darkness had no effect on her whatever. She jabbered on about her day, her dolls, her diet and her general philosophy of life unabated. She punctuated her stories with pointed questions demanding a response. One of us would mumble a barely coherent answer and she would chatter on. Finally she interrupted her own energetic soliloquy with a question, "Am I talking too much?" With that we were both awake and chuckling. We both quickly assured her that she was not at all talking too much. When heavy eyes ended my day she still had stories to tell. As I drifted off to sleep I took comfort in the thought of my unsleeping Heavenly Father who never tires of hearing me talk. He wants to know when I have something to celebrate. He likes it when I tell him my fears and unburden my guilty heart to Him. He listens when I chatter excitedly about plans. He cares about what I think. He even stays awake at night and listens when I am talking in the dark. He can listen longer than I can talk. The shoemaker knew that because of his failing eyesight and slow hands that he was losing customers to his little shop. Soon they will have no money to buy any leather. Without any leather he couldn't make any more shoes. And if he couldn't make any more shoes then his wife and he would lose their shop and home and have no money for food. He spent all day working on a pair of shoes. He looked around and spotted the last piece of leather on a nearby table. He stood up and cried in despair. He looked outside a window and saw a rainbow. He whispered in a trembling voice to the rainbow, "Please, oh please, can someone help me tonight?" He left his workshop and went to his bed hungry. He and his wife had no more food since the day before he had spent their last coins on a piece of leather. In the morning the shoemaker cleaned his glasses and threaded his needle and looked around for that piece of leather. But something amazing had happened. A finished pair of shoes stood in the center of the table. The shoes were perfect to the last shiny buckle. Someone had made those shoes for him that night. He rapidly sold those shoes at twice the usual price. And with that money got a bit of food and some pieces of leather. The next morning he had twenty shoes which he sold in less than an hour. He then purchased several pieces of fine leather. As he laid all those pieces of leather on the table he was deter- mined to see who was making all those shoes. He and his wife stood in the next room and spied through a little hole in the wall. round midnight they saw six naked leprechauns sneak into the shoemaker's shop. It was winter and the leprechauns shivered while they busily made two hundred shoes. "Poor fellows! They must be very cold" the shoemaker's wife whispered to her husband. "Tomorrow I will make them some beautiful clothes to thank them for helping us." The shoemaker's wife search for the best material to make their clothes. All she could find were green colored silks, green tweeds and green wools. She spend almost all the money they had left Buying the most expensive fabrics. She worked all day making the clothes for the six little leprechauns. She hoped that they wouldn't be too disappointed that all their clothes were green in color. That night the leprechaun found a large pile of leather. They magically created thousands of pairs of beautiful shoes. The shoemaker and his wife wouldn't need to worry about money any more since they had now more shoes in the shop that they could sell in a hundred years. After finishing their job one leprechaun spotted a large thank you note and a pile of very small clothes. He called his friends over and they found six elegant green jackets with gold buttons, green tweed pants, green woolen socks, silk green vests, some green underwear and silken green top hats. hen the leprechaun saw the clothes they jumped with joy and danced a jig. They shouted as they got dressed, "What a beautiful color for these fine clothes and we'll never be cold again." They suddenly vanished and reappeared in front of the shoemaker and his wife. The head leprechaun smiled as them and said, "We give thanks for such beautiful clothes. We heard your cries for help and came. But we are rarely if never given any thanks for our efforts. Because of your gift we promise not only to help you when you are in need but to help every shoemaker in need in this land of Ireland." Then a wondrous rainbow appeared and the leprechauns leaped on it and disappeared. And this is why leprechauns always wear green and the shoemakers in Ireland are the luckiest people in the world. ~William Slaght~ -<>- To SUBSCRIBE: Send an e-mail with SUBSCRIBE CUP O'CHEER in the subject line to cheer316@sc.rr.com. =============================================================== ,-`"-=') =/////// ,== _,_(((((-`6\ ==.| /,,...\\\C _| .--. I was 6 years old, and my father was, like most fathers are to their sons, a superhero to me. It never occurred to me that he had a reason to fear anything, because he never showed any fear. My sister came running into the house, hollering that a bunch of men with guns were outside. My dad took a look outside and his face darkened a bit. He stuffed his revolver in his back pocket and, as he went out the door, told us to go to the kitchen and stay there. My mom and my sister looked scared, and kept pulling me back as I tried to get to the window to watch. Although I never got a very good look, I remember seeing a lot of men, with rifles, shotguns and torches, some of them wearing white robes with hoods. There was a lot of shouting and a fair amount of cussing. Since my dad was a sailor, I recognized some of that. Finally I heard my dad tell them that if they didn't get off his property right then, and never come back, he'd guarantee that at least six of them would never see their families again. This had started when my father intervened when a group of young bullies were roughing up a much younger black kid from down the road. These men were telling my dad that he was forgetting his place, and he'd better remember the way things were. My dad was white, raised in Meridian, Mississippi, during the depression, and he knew very well "how things were". But he had also shared foxholes in Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Korea, with other soldiers, who were scared just like him, missing their families like him, and sick of killing like him. Some of them were white like him, and some of them were black, brown or yellow. But they all bled red just like him. And they all got cold, hungry, sick and sad -- just like him. My father never took his gun out of his pocket that day. But apparently, the men believed him because they left, grumbling and waving their guns. And they never came back. I wasn't old enough to know how dangerous the situation was that day. My father always taught me that all you really had to do was what yousen knew was right -- and then things would pretty much take care of themselves. He proved it that day, and on many other occasions. Dad was raised in a bigoted culture, by bigots, and taught how to act like a bigot. Everything about Mississippi in the Depression years screamed of racism. He was taught to believe in only one race. I guess all those foxhole buddies of his helped confirm that, because to the day he died, he only believed in one race: the Human Race. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .^._.^. | . . | ( --- ) .'
