As we have such trials and pain inflicted upon us in such a way. Dear God reach out and touch the soldiers in a very special way. As they are sent to serve our country so very far away. They have left their loved ones to carry heavy loads. Their hearts are often heavy, when they go down the very strange roads. We pray and write and listen for a call, We hope that no one comes to tell them their soldier took a fall. We learn to be brave and pick up and carry on. But there are others who know he or she will never come back home. I was one of the lucky ones who never got a call. for I have had Gods love to help me stand tall. When we salute our veterans this time, let us not forget, that we are the lucky ones and he or she has no regrets. You can always count on Barb to run people around on errands, babysit the kids, pick up stuff, help plan parties and so on -- what she does for everyone is seemingly endless. A few months ago, she called me on a Tuesday afternoon. After the usual exchange of pleasantries, she asked me if we had any plans for the coming Friday evening. No, I told her, nothing going on. "How would you guys like to go to Disney On Ice?" she asked. One of the touring Disney ice skating productions was in town for that weekend only; going to it would be fun, but tickets were out of our budget. At first, I supposed Barb was inviting us to go with her and her husband; my first thought was, that would be nice, but we can't afford it. My second thought, well, of course she already knows that! And I'm not letting her or anyone else pay for our tickets!" Little did I know what she had up her sleeve. Well, I sputtered, that would be nice, but, "Good!", she interrupted. "Because I just won four tickets, and I'm giving them to you guys!" WHAT?! I gasped. "Oh yeah, I do silly stuff like this constantly. One of the radio stations was giving tickets to the ninth caller. I called, and won. I know you guys don't usually have money for things like this, so I want you to have them." Turns out Barb and calls in for other contests all the time. And this time, she won! "I'll bring the tickets to church Wednesday night, okay?" Wednesday night she brought the tickets in a cute envelope with stickers all over it. Not only had she gone down to the radio station to get them, but she also went to Ticketmaster, because the radio station was just handing out passes that had to be traded at Ticketmaster. She told the ticket lady to be sure to give the best seats she could, because they were for two special kids. For two kids aged 4 and 7, this was a special gift indeed. It was even cool for us grown-ups. Our kids especially had a blast watching beloved Disney stories come to life with real actors and awesome skating. Our kids now have two special memories to last them for a long time: the memory of an awesome show, and the memory of the kindness that made it possible. The best thank you would have been to be able to see our kids' eyes shining with delight that night, but since that wasn't possible, passing along this story will have to do. So, for all you do, and especially for being the ninth caller, thank you. By the way, Barb, they were great seats, too! =======HeroicStories======= >-->From SermondFodder: _ |_| | |_/ _ _ (_) _ | | | (` \) . | \ (` (` |) (_ (_) ,-.(_) | o o o / | `-' _ (_) * .|, * O -x- '|` \ \ |// | * ( %%%)%%%/%%% % -+- O _ %\%%%%%%%%(%%%%%/ | %%%%%%%%%%)%%%)%(%%\ _ %%/ __^_ _^__ \%%% (_) _|_ ) |"\=(((@))=((@)))=/"|% | ( %\_( ,`--'(_)`--'. )_/ % \ ) /%%( /______I______\ )% ) ) , _/%%%%\\\_|_|_|_|_|_///%%% ,----.-._ ( / %% %%\ `|_|_|_|_|' /%\%%\ / __ `.``. \( -%% %%%%`---.___,---'%%%% ) / / _`.__))))____` ( %% % %% \ ( @)__,._ :%## % % \ .' )`-----.%## / `' ,' Stef >In Sickness and In Health - The Amazing Vow Power Forty years ago, a study called the Hammond Report analyzed the smoking habits of half a million people. Its conclusion: Smoking is dangerous to one's health. It was a warning that ended up on every pack of cigarettes sold. Ten years later, a researcher took another look at the Hammond Report and found something that had been overlooked—something just as hazardous as a pack-a-day cigarette habit—that is, divorce. As Linda Waite and Maggie Gallagher write in their book, The Case for Marriage, an enterprising Surgeon General might wish to slap a warning label on divorce decrees, reading, "Not being married can be hazardous to your health." Research is proving that those who get—and stay—married can count on much better health than those who don't. How much better? Waite and Gallagher found that divorced, single, and widowed people are "far more likely to die from all causes," including heart disease, stroke, car accidents, murder, and suicide. As for cancer, being married dramatically increases the odds of survival. "Even sick people who marry live longer than their counterparts who don't," they write. This happens in part because when people get married, they typically adopt a healthier lifestyle. Men especially give up what Waite and Gallagher call "stupid bachelor tricks." They give up drinking and driving, fighting at bars, and abusing drugs, they say. Wives not only discourage such behavior, they also improve their husband's health by cooking them healthy meals, encouraging regular sleep, and scheduling doctor appointments for them. Nagging, of course, can be irritating, but it works an important benefit in marriage. Husbands can improve their wives' lives, for example, by encouraging them to give up smoking and to get regular exercise. The emotional support a spouse can supply means that spouses recover more quickly when illness strikes, and this emotional support boosts the immune system. Recent divorce, on the other hand, is known to lower immune functioning. Even monogamous marital sex can help couples ward off illness. These health benefits come about because marriage seems "to provide individuals with a sense of meaning in their lives," according to Waite and Gallagher. A wife feels licensed to nag in a way that a girlfriend doesn't, precisely because both husband and wife know their lives are intertwined. These health benefits are one more reason Americans must do all they can to preserve traditional marriage as the union of a man and a woman. It's become clear that several Supreme Court justices are determined to impose same-sex "marriage," so-called, on America whether we want it or not. Legal scholars warn that the only means we have left to preserve marriage is to amend the Constitution. A Federal Marriage Amendment has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. Luke 19:38 After going through the buffet line, Beverley and I chose seats at a vacant table and shortly others joined us. One was a very handsome young man. He spoke flawless English, but with enough of an accent that I knew he was from a foreign land. We exchanged the usual pleasantries, but nothing in depth. After breakfast, I asked where he was from and when he told me, I proceeded to tell him how much Beverley and I enjoyed out visit to his homeland and then I launched into my political analysis of his country, expressing my own views. When I finished, he very politely said, "Your really understand my country," and then we went on our separate way. Shortly thereafter, when I heard someone refer to him as "Your Majesty," I wanted to melt into the carpet, realizing I had just told a royal prince how to run his own country. I guess that's why I never ended up in the diplomatic corps! It turns out he is Prince Misu Zulu Zula, Crown Prince of the Zulu nation and heir to the throne of the second largest monarchy in the world. In the course of the week end, we actually got to be pretty good friends and agreed to meet again in Florida. I invited him to stay in our home and go to church with us. When I saw his aide checking out of the hotel on Sunday and experiencing some difficulty with the billing, I whipped out my Amex card and paid the bill. It was worth it to have a receipt to show my grandchildren and tell them about when I covered lodging for a real prince. The prince is in line for the crown, following centuries of his ruling family over the "Warrior Tribe." But, this prince is a different kind of prince. His life was changed when at age fourteen, he gave his heart to Christ at a youth rally and nothing has been the same since. His heart is filled with compassion and love for his people. He hurts where they hurt. One in three are dying of HIV/AIDS. He asked the question, "Who am I going to rule tomorrow?" He is trying to bring a message of hope to his people and it isn't easy going against culture, tradition and the local religion of Witchcraft. He tells his people that if they have a choice between gold and diamonds in one hand and a book in the other, take the book, because the book is the Bible. He gives thanks for missionaries who came to his country not to condemn but to offer new hope through a spiritual alternative and he ends his message with the assurance that "through God, we can do it." Yes we can, Your Majesty, yes we can. Question: What do you consider to be, or how do you define, "greatness"? They certainly kept it quiet, This is long, but very good...save it for when you can read it (about 3 minutes) Subject: Fw: Terrorist Remember the guy who got on a plane with a bomb built into his shoe and tried to light it? His trial is over. How much of this Judge's comments did you hear on TV? Everyone should hear what the judge had to say. This is worthy of your time. The real eye opener is that the News did not report anything on it. US District Court Judge William Young statement in sentencing "shoe bomber" Richard Reid --------------------- JUDGE WILLIAM YOUNG, SENTENCES THE SHOE BOMBER US District Court Judge William Young made the following statement in sentencing "shoe bomber" Richard Reid to prison. It is noteworthy, and deserves to be remembered far longer than he predicts. I commend it to you and anyone you might wish to forward it to. (I hope you will read every word! Pray for more judges like this one.) "January 30, 2003, United States vs.. Reid. Judge Young: "Mr. Richard C. Reid, hearken now to the sentence the Court imposes upon you. "On counts 1, 5 and 6 the Court sentences you to life in prison in the custody of the United States Attorney General. "On counts 2, 3, 4 and 7, the Court sentences you to 20 years in prison on each count, the sentence on each count to run consecutive with the other. "That's 80 years. "On count 8 the Court sentences you to the mandatory 30 years consecutive to the 80 years just imposed. The Court imposes upon you each of the eight counts a fine of $250,000 for the aggregate fine of $2 million. "The Court accepts the government's recommendation with respect to restitution and orders restitution in the amount of $298.17 to Andre Bousquet and $5,784 to American Airlines. "The Court imposes upon you the $800 special assessment. "The Court imposes upon you five years supervised release simply because the law requires it. But the life sentences are real life sentences so I need go no further. "This is the sentence that is provided for by our statutes. It is a fair and just sentence. It is a righteous sentence. "Let me explain this to you: We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. "There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect. Here in this court, where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice, you are not an enemy combatant. "You are a terrorist. "You are not a soldier in any war. "You are a terrorist. "To give you that reference, to call you a soldier, gives you far too much stature. "Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, "You are a terrorist. And we do not negotiate with terrorists. "We do not sign documents with terrorists. "We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice. So war talk is way out of line in this court. "You are a big fellow. But you are not that big. You're no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. "A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders. "In a very real sense Trooper Santiago had it right when you first were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and where the TV crews were and he said you're no big deal. "You are no big deal. "What your able counsel and what the equally able United States attorneys have grappled with and what I have as honestly as I know how tried to grapple with, is why you did something so horrific. "What was it that led you here to this courtroom today? "I have listened respectfully to what you have to say. And I asked you to search your heart and ask yourself what sort of unfathomable hate led you to do what you are guilty, and admit you are guilty of doing. "And I have an answer for you.. "It may not satisfy you. But as I search this entire record it comes as close to understanding as I know. It seems to me you hate the one thing that is most precious: You hate our freedom. "Our individual freedom. Our individual freedom to live as we choose, to come and go as we choose, and to believe or not believe as we individually choose. "Here, in this society, the very winds carry freedom. They carry it everywhere from sea to shining sea. "It is because we prize individual freedom so much that you are here in this beautiful courtroom. So that everyone can see, truly see, that justice is administered fairly, individually, and discretely. "It is for freedom's sake that your lawyers are striving so vigorously on your behalf, have filed appeals, and will go on in their representation of you before other judges. "We are about it. Because we all know that the way we treat you, Mr. Reid, is the measure of our own liberties. "Make no mistake though: It is yet true that we will bear any burden, pay any price, to preserve our freedoms. "Look around this courtroom. Mark it well. "The world is not going to long remember what you or I say here. Day after tomorrow it will be forgotten. But this, however, will long endure. Here in this courtroom and courtrooms all across America, the American people will gather to see that justice, individual justice.. Justice, not war. Individual justice is in fact being done. "The very President of the United States through his officers will have to come into courtrooms and lay out evidence on which specific matters can be judged. And juries of citizens will gather to sit and judge that evidence democratically - to mold and shape and refine our sense of justice. "See that flag Mr. Reid? "That is the flag of the United States of America. "That flag will fly there long after this is all forgotten. That flag stands for freedom. It always will. "Custody, Mr. Officer. Stand him down." ** How much of this Judge's comments did you hear on our TV sets? ZERO! Please pass this around. I was destined to a zig-zag pattern of one good day, one off day. On the off days, I was a basketcase. I couldn't think, organize, follow through, work, direct children, or butter bread. The hot flashes were undeniable. While the doctor was regulating my hormone dosage, I had to deal with the ups and downs. Before long, the roller coaster ride swooped into Columbus Day, meaning the kids were home from school. My children, ages 1, 6 and 8, at the time, had no idea that this day off was falling on one of my "off days". Trying to make up for lost time from work and volunteer responsibilities, the housekeeping and children had taken everything out of me by 1 pm. At some point, between the bickering, the diaper changes, the lunch mess and the telephone ringing, I escaped onto the back deck for some peace. The deck was barren in preparation for winter. The woods facing me were stripped of their leaves as was the autumn sky of the sun. A hint of chill reminded me of the cold season yet to arrive. How fitting, I thought, to be on the same cycle as mother nature. Doom and gloom. Behind my observations and thoughts, I could hear the kids screaming and fighting, and I could see through the lighted windows at the mess they were making in the family room. I knew I needed to help them find something more constructive to do, but at that moment, all I could do was cry. I hadn't the energy to deal with three kids or anything else. I instinctively fell into prayer. "Dear God, I can't function today. Please give me a sign that you're listening, that you'll help me. I can't do this alone..." Interrupting my prayer, the sounds of a very focused flock of geese roared over the house. The glorious honking grew closer and louder by the second. Before long, the entire "V" appeared so close above me, I was sure if I stood on tip toes I could touch them. They were low and loud and had just missed the tips of the trees when one of them flew out of the formation, landing in the woods. Quickly, two others followed, and the rest filled in the empty spaces and flew on, rising higher and higher until they disappeared. I was in awe of the miraculous distraction, and suddenly felt my spirit lift with the geese. Just weeks earlier, I had read that geese fly in a "V" formation -- that it takes the whole team to make it to their destination. When the "lead bird" tires out, it falls to the back of the formation and another takes over. When one falls ill or can no longer fly, it flutters to the ground. With it, two more leave the formation to sit by the sick one, protecting it while it heals or dies. Once able, the birds take flight again. Because they feel the strain of flying without the group, they often find a new group with which to fly. I remember reading that it's easier for them to get where they're going when they're traveling on the thrust of another. The geese flying out of formation feel the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone. I read, too, that geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. Then it hit me. Maybe they were honking for me. Maybe I need support right now and someone to watch over me until I can fly again. Maybe I need to fall out of formation and rest. Maybe I don't need to be so strong, so soon. Maybe I'm not ready for the long "flight". That's when things started to "look up". I knew it was time to go back inside, give my kids some attention, wait for my husband to get home from work to help, and rest. I knew all this because of a sign from above and a flock of geese reminding me that traveling on the thrust of another is easier than going it alone. -- Janice Boyles ___________________________________________ Janice is the mother of three and lives on the edge of the Catskill Mountains in New York. Yet the most effective involves the saying of just three words. When spoken or conveyed, these statements have the power to forge new friendships, deepen old ones and restore relationships that have cooled. The following three-word phrases can enrich every relationship. I'll Be There: If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase "I'll be there." Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give. When we are truly present for other people, important things happen to them and us. We are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored emotionally and spiritually. Being there is at the very core of civility. I Miss You: Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples simply and sincerely said to each other "I miss you." This powerful affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved. Consider how ecstatic you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you." I Respect You: Respect is another way of showing love. Respect conveys the feeling that another person is a true equal. If you talk to your children as if they were adults you will strengthen the bonds and become close friends. This applies to all interpersonal relationships. Maybe You're Right: This phrase is highly effective in diffusing an argument and restoring frayed emotions. The flip side to "maybe your right" is the humility of admitting, "Maybe I'm wrong". Let's face it. When you have a heated argument with someone, all you do is cement the other person's point of view. They, or you, will not change their stance and you run the risk of seriously damaging the relationship between you. Saying "maybe you're right" can open the door to further explore the subject, in which you may then have the opportunity to get your view across in a more rational manner. Please Forgive Me: Many broken relationships could be restored and healed if people would admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are vulnerable to faults, foibles and failures. A man should never be ashamed to own up that he has been in the wrong, which is saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. I Thank You: Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy. People who enjoy the companionship of good, close friends are those who don't take daily courtesies for granted. They are quick to thank their friends for their many expressions of kindness. On the other hand, people whose circle of friends is severely constricted often do not have the attitude of gratitude. Count On Me: A friend is one who walks in when others walk out. Loyalty is an essential ingredient for true friendship; it is the emotional glue that bonds people. Those that are rich in their relationships tend to be steady and true friends. When troubles come, a good friend is there indicating you can "count on me." Let Me Help: The best of friends see a need and try to fill it. When they spot a hurt they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they pitch in and help. I Understand You: People become closer and enjoy each other more if they feel the other person accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know in so many little ways that you understand them, is one of the most powerful tools for healing your relationship. This applies to any relationship. I Love You: Perhaps the most important three words that you can say. Telling someone that you truly love them satisfies a person's deepest emotional needs; the need to belong, to feel appreciated and to be wanted. Your family, your friends and you, all need to hear those three little words. "I love you." --- God Bless You! :) Shangy! ====================================================================== >-->Quotes: "Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place" (Psalm 51:6, NIV). A friend is someone who stays with you in the bad weather of life, guards you when you are off your guard, restrains your impetuosity, delights in your wholeness, forgives your failures, does not forsake you when others let you down. Truth does not become more true by virtue of the fact that the entire world agrees with it, nor less so even if the whole world disagrees with it. ~~-Maimonides Do not anticipate trouble, or worry about what may never happen.
