The topic is irrelevant, for I will read any off-beat, odd-ball set of facts or list assembled, be it arranged numerically, alphabetically, by frequency of occurance, time sequence of events, or people polled. I'm a trivia junkie. However, there are a few questions that seem to elude every list I've ever perused. These questions bug me, popping up in my thoughts with routine frequency. How I wish someone could provide the answers so that I can file these questions away and clear that space on my mental hard drive. Who can help me? 1. If someone puts on a pair of shoes there's a 50/50 chance of getting them on the correct feet. So why does my preschooler put them on the wrong feet 95% of the time? 2. How come I don't feel the hundreds of red ants crawling on my feet until they are all assembled and give the "all bite" signal? 3. Did the person who invented playdough have carpet? 4. If blinking only takes a fraction of a second, how are the majority of people able to capture someone doing it at least twice on a 24 picture roll of film? 5. Why do stores put in 25 check-out lanes, and then only open two? 6. How are children able to distinguish and distain the taste of liver and spinach, but have no problem consuming soap, crayons, paste and playdough? 7. If we can see the moon during the day, can the people in China see it, since it is nighttime there? 8. Why does my local library only have one copy of Raggedy Ann, which is always in use, but always has 45 copies of various Harry Potter books on the shelves? 9. Why is it so easy for me to fall asleep in front of the television with noise galore, but then be wide awake when I try to go to bed? 10. If my skin is constantly shedding, why won't my various scars and moles fall off? 11. If my windows and doors are closed, where does all the dust come from? 12. Why are men put in charge of ships in an ocean, satellites in outerspace, and tanks in the desert, but they can't seem to find the ketchup bottle in the refrigerator? 13. Have you noticed that a good haircut grows out twice as fast as a bad one? 14. If spiderwebs are made by spiders, what makes cobwebs -- cobs? 15. Why does the day have fewer hours since I became a mother? What did I do with all the free time I had before? If you can answer any of these questions, please let me know. -- Kelly Mieszek ___________________________________________ Kelly lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with her husband and three homsechooled children. I'm old enough to admit that I often used one in college rather than a calculator. Of course, I also typed my term papers on a portable typewriter, and was thrilled when "Pong" was invented! (you younger readers may need to talk to your parents to fully understand today's message). Every year, more and more items become obsolete (or close to it). The current list of vanishing items includes dial-up Internet, photographs that you get developed, maps, landline phones, VCRs, and phone books. Things have changed. There isn't much use for a slide rule anymore, any more than we need an abacus to count. Some things don't change, though. Numbers are the same, whether they are calculated on a slide rule or a scientific calculator. It's much the same way in religion. Our methods of teaching people may change. We may use television or radio or e-mail or podcasts - methods that were unheard of 100 years ago. But the message cannot change. It must be God's Word. "Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because 'All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever.' " (I Peter 1:22-25a) --- ...Absolutely! Thanks LouiseA! The reason why is a simple one to keep in mind. It's because truth never changes. What was true yesterday will be true today and will also be true tomorrow. Truth just doesn't change. =========================================================== >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: _________________________________________________________ ||-------------------------------------------------------|| ||.--. .-._ .----. || |||==|____| |H|___ .---.___|""""|_____.--.___ || ||| |====| | |xxx|_ |+++|=-=|_ _|-=+=-|==|---||| |||==| | | | | \ | | |_\/_|Black| | ^ ||| ||| | | | | |\ \ .--. | |=-=|_/\_|-=+=-| | ^ ||| ||| | | | | |_\ \_( oo )| | | |Magus| | ^ ||| |||==|====| |H|xxx| \ \ |''| |+++|=-=|""""|-=+=-|==|---||| ||`--^----'-^-^---' `-' "" '---^---^----^-----^--^---^|| ||-------------------------------------------------------|| ||-------------------------------------------------------|| || ___ .-.__.-----. .---.|| || |===| .---. __ .---| |XX|<(*)>|_|^^^||| || , /(| |_|III|__|''|__|:x:|=| | |=| Q ||| || _a'{ / (|===|+| |++| |==| | | |Illum| | R ||| || '/\\/ _(|===|-| | |''| |:x:|=| |inati| | Y ||| ||_____ -\{___(| |-| | | | | | | | | | Z ||| || _(____)|===|+|[I]|DK|''|==|:x:|=|XX|<(*)>|=|^^^||| || `---^-^---^--^--'--^---^-^--^-----^-^---^|| ||-------------------------------------------------------|| ||_______________________________________________________|| Qryz >To Value Such a Simple Thing We take for granted such simple tasks. I saw a Cashier hand this little boy his money back saying "I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll." Then the little boy turned to the old woman Next to him: ''Granny, are you sure I don't have enough money?'' The old lady replied: ''You know that you don’t have enough money to buy this doll, my dear.'' Then she asked him to stay there for 5 Minutes while she went to look around. She left quickly. The little boy was still holding the doll in His hand. Finally, I walked toward him and I asked him who he wished to give this doll to. "It's the doll that my sister loved most and wanted so much for this Christmas. She was so sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her." I replied to him that maybe Santa Claus will bring it to her after all, and not to worry. But he replied to me sadly. "No, Santa Claus can’t bring it to her where she is now. I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there." His eyes were so sad while saying this. "My Sister has gone to be with God. Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I Thought that she could take the doll with her to Give it to my sister.'' My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and said: "I Told daddy to tell mommy not to go yet. I need her to wait until I come back from the mall." Then he showed me a very nice photo of him where he was laughing. He then told me "I want mommy to take my picture with her so she won't forget me." "I love my mommy and I wish she doesn't have to leave me, but daddy says that she has to go to be with my little sister." Then he looked again at the doll with sad eyes, very quietly. I quickly reached for my wallet and said to the boy. "What if we checked again, just in case you do have enough money?'' "OK" he said "I hope that I have enough." I added some of my money to his without him seeing and we started to count it. There was enough for the Doll and even some spare money. The little boy said: "Thank you God for giving me enough money!" Then he looked at me and added "I asked Yesterday before I slept for God to make sure I have enough money to buy this doll so that mommy can give it to my sister. He heard me!'' "I also wanted to have enough money to buy a White rose for my mommy, but I didn't dare to ask God for too much. But He gave me enough to buy the Doll and a white rose.'' "My mommy loves white roses." A few minutes later, the old lady came again and I left with my basket. I finished my shopping in a totally different state from when I started. I couldn't get the little boy Out of my mind. Then I remembered a local newspaper article 2 days ago, which mentioned of a drunk man in a truck, who hit A car, where there was one young lady and a little Girl. The little girl died right away, and the Mother was left in a critical state. The family had to decide whether to pull the plug on the Life-assisting machine, because the young lady would not be able to recover from the coma. Was this the family of the little boy? Two days after this encounter with the little boy, I read in the newspaper that the young Lady had passed away. I couldn't stop myself as I bought a bunch of white roses and I went to the funeral home where the body of the young woman was exposed for people to see and make last wishes before burial. She was there, in her coffin, holding a Beautiful white rose in her hand with the photo of the little boy and the doll placed over her chest. I left the place, teary-eyed, feeling that my life had been changed forever. The love that this little boy had for his mother and his sister is still, to this day, hard to imagine. And in a Fraction of a second, a drunk driver had taken all This away from him. By Bob Perks ~~~Used by permission by Andychap for "The Funnies" an "Extra".~~~ Hello, my friend! While writing this story today, I happened to stop for a second and look out my window. There, walking the down the road, I saw a young girl carrying a dog leash. The rain was pouring down and she had no umbrella. I ran downstairs, grabbed my umbrella and went outside. "Are you looking for your dog?" I asked. "Yes, I am. His name is Banjo, he's a brown Chesapeake." she replied. She had this innocent, Howdy Doodie, freckled face that didn't hold sadness too well. I gave her my umbrella and told her to keep it. I came up to finish this story. It only took a minute to help that child. It only took a minute for me to know I had to do more. I jumped in my car and drove around the neighborhood. I didn't find him. But it only took a minute to say a prayer that she did. =================================================== Perks Pearl of Wisdom "It takes so little to make a big difference." I've used it myself. When you think about it, it's not much of a request and yet, we often fail to respond to it. I'll admit it. I've probably even groaned or moaned when someone asked it of me. "When you have a minute, will you read this for me?" "When you have a minute, call your Dad just to check on him." "When you have a minute, spend some time with the kids. They've been asking for you." "When you have a minute, call your doctor for the results of those tests." A minute. That's all they are asking for and yet, we think our lives are so busy and out of control that they might as well ask for a day, a week or a year of your time. None of it is possible. Or we think everything else is more important. How sad. It only takes a minute to read the following. Perhaps you'll realize how rushed your life has been and how easy it is to change it. When you have a minute, why not follow through on one of these: It only takes a minute to make a difference in the world. It only takes a minute to calm a fear. It only takes a minute to make a child feel loved. It only takes minute to hold a hand and make the pain go away. It only takes a minute to say, “I’m sorry” and prevent a lifetime of regret. It only takes a minute to stoop down to see the world through the eyes of a child and in doing so change how they see you. It only takes a minute to dial the phone and say, “I just called to say “I love you!” It only takes a minute to stop what you are doing and really listen to what someone is saying. It only takes a minute to smile and get one in return. It only takes a minute to forgive. It only takes a minute to ask to be forgiven. It only takes a minute to send an email to all the people in your address book and say, "I just wanted to take a minute to tell you how incredible you are. I am blessed to have you in my life." It only takes a minute to say a prayer. It only takes a minute to say, “Thank you, God” but a lifetime to list all the reasons. When you have a minute, visit my prayer page and read some the challenges others are facing. It will take about a minute to realized how blessed your life really is. http://www.iwishyouenough.com/PrayerRequests.htm "I believe in you!" Michigan. Times are tough, especially in small areas. I drove to a blighted part of the city with boarded-up homes. We were five months behind on electric payments and I'd been calling to delay the shut-off for one more week. Twice they delayed payment. At the zeroth hour I pulled up to the building, preceded by a black woman driving a rusted, crumbling beater that shuddered to a stop. I walked in behind her, cash in hand, and waited in line. My children bounced on chairs nearby. Two women behind bulletproof acrylic windows took money. But only one line moved. Delaying the other was a long conversation from a young white mother with a baby on her hip. She wore pajamas and a sweater, was good-natured and laughing. "Well, so..." she said, "you know how it is. I mean, they just sit there in a pile, right? I don't know where they go. I don't know, I probably lost it." The woman behind the two-inch thick bulletproof Plexiglas nodded, unspeaking. Her nameplate said "Ella". The young patron continued," I mean, I GUESS the payment plan is good. But that's... how much again??" "Fifty dollars," the woman behind the Plexiglas prompted. The young mother said, "Yeah... fifty. Dollars, I mean. And if we miss that today then what? Fifty?" Ella confirmed, "Yes, fifty. The payment plan we arranged." "Boy, how could it be so much?" A long pause. "So what happens if we don't have the...?" Ella: "Fifty dollars. Well, that's when the account needs to be discontinued." The woman with the baby on her hip looked at the floor during the whole conversation. Talking in a low voice, but in a silent room of people waiting. She talked as though every second she talked was another second the power stayed on. As though somehow in this circular conversation the situation would resolve itself. Momentarily irritated one woman was taking so much time, I then felt some shame. I'd just wait calmly. Clearly the young woman with the baby was just buying time. Seconds. Moments. Avoiding the inevitable: her power would be shut off in the morning. Slowly the line crawled. My children became more animated and impatient. The woman with the baby kept talking. Then the woman in front of me went up to the counter -- the woman who drove the rusted beater. She handed the teller a check. "This is for her," and pointed at the young mother with the baby. The woman who wrote the check left. She bee-lined to her beater and drove off. The two tellers looked at one another confused. One said to the young mother, "Well, I guess, Merry Christmas." The woman with the baby looked at the floor, "I don't think she pointed at me. This would be a great joy as they traveled to an exotic and romantic location for the ceremony. But there was one major problem—because the wedding party was very small, Jeff would have to perform three separate roles that could be in conflict. He would be the officiating minister, the father of the bride, and the wedding photographer! Have you ever felt as if you were wearing too many hats? Jethro thought his son-in-law Moses was (Ex. 18). Leading the Israelites, arbitrating personal disputes, and handing down legal judgments for a great multitude was taking its toll. Finally, Jethro approached Moses, telling him: “This thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself” (v.18). He wisely counseled Moses to delegate smaller disputes to other advisors and take the more challenging cases himself (v.22). Whether you’re a mother with small children, an overwhelmed business executive, or an overworked church volunteer, you too can take a lesson from Moses. Why not prayerfully discern if there may be tasks you can delegate to others or even discontinue—so that you don’t wear yourself out. —Dennis Fisher Father, we need help with our priorities. Teach us to understand what’s most important and needs to be accomplished, and to let go of what we can so that we are at our best for You. Amen. If we don’t come apart and rest awhile, we may just plain come apart! —Havner as seen in Our Daily Bread --- ...Sunday? Gen.2: [2] And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. [3] And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Luke 23: [56] And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment. The seventh day is blessed and sanctified by God. It is to be considered the day of rest. You need to take one day out of your week and simply take it easy. Just rest. Give yourself time to relax and get ready for the week ahead. You don't have to feel guilty because you decided to rest. God wants you to take care of yourself. "A dollar, a dollar"; then, "Two!" "Only two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three? Three dollars, once; three dollars twice, Going for three ---" But no, From the room, far back, a gray-haired man Came forward and picked up the bow; Then, wiping the dust from the old violin, And tightening the loose strings, He played a melody pure and sweet, As a caroling angel sings. The music ceased, and the auctioneer, With a voice that was quiet and low, Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow. "A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three? Three thousand, once, three thousand, twice, And going, and gone," said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, We do not quite understand What changed its worth." Swift came the reply: The touch of a master's hand." And many a man with life out of tune, And battered and scarred with sin, Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd Much like the old violin. A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine, A game -- and he travels on. He is "going" once, and "going" twice, He's "going" and almost "gone." But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd Never can quite understand The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought By the touch of the Master's hand. as seen in Laugh and Lift -<>- ,,,,, ////""\ . When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty. I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not turn to me,' declares the LORD. (Haggai 2:16-17 (NIV)) I received an email today that referenced an earlier part of Haggai 2. This is what the LORD Almighty says: `In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty. `The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty. (Haggai 2:6-8 (NIV)) Is it just me, or we facing the events in this world because we have turned away from God? Governments being overthrown. Economic uncertainty in the whole world and economic collapse in some countries. Public riots because of racial and religious tension. Looting and burning because they want to show the authorities that they can do what they want. Society treats the resources of this world as theirs. It is there only for them and not for anyone else, now or in the future. Society lives "high on the hog," yet forgets that the future relies on wisely managing so that the hog will be able to reproduce. Stewardship is long forgotten. "I want it now!" "I deserve it!" "I have a right to do it!" Selfishness has become the rule. It is a scary world that has been so rapidly transforming right before our eyes. Can we solve the problems that the world is facing if we turn to God? There is no other way! Everything is His. He is the Creator. He longs to bless us, but . . . He will not bless us if we are foolish. He will not bless us if we ignore Him. He will not bless us if we spit in His face. Think of a father who has lovingly purchased several toys for his children. He sits back and joyfully watches as his children play with the toys as they were designed. Slowly, the children begin to take these precious toys and do things that they shouldn't. He gently reminds them that if they take care of the toys, they will last a long time. They will give joy for many years. Some time later, the children forget these words and start to do things that will break the toys. As a father, he reminds them again and tells them that if they do not stop, he will have to take the toys from them. The father still loves the children, yet, he must do what is needed to reprimand and to teach. Only when the children return with a repentant heart does the father allow them to once again have the toys. We, as a society, as a world, have mistreated what God has given to us. We have turned our back on Him. We have even gone so far as to expel Him from public life. It sounds to me that we need to turn to God. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. Here are some of them: Jaden, 5 at the time, was up an hour past his usual bedtime. Kathy suggested they take a little "break" in his bed. He agreed. With night light on he lay down in his bed with Kathy. He remained a little lively but soon settled down. After relaxing for about a half hour, Kathy decided he had fallen asleep and she quietly tiptoed to the door. All of a sudden a little voice rang out: "What do you think YOU'RE doing?!"
