The topic is irrelevant, for I will read any off-beat, odd-ball set of facts or list assembled, be it arranged numerically, alphabetically, by frequency of occurance, time sequence of events, or people polled. I'm a trivia junkie. However, there are a few questions that seem to elude every list I've ever perused. These questions bug me, popping up in my thoughts with routine frequency. How I wish someone could provide the answers so that I can file these questions away and clear that space on my mental hard drive. Who can help me? 1. If someone puts on a pair of shoes there's a 50/50 chance of getting them on the correct feet. So why does my preschooler put them on the wrong feet 95% of the time? 2. How come I don't feel the hundreds of red ants crawling on my feet until they are all assembled and give the "all bite" signal? 3. Did the person who invented playdough have carpet? 4. If blinking only takes a fraction of a second, how are the majority of people able to capture someone doing it at least twice on a 24 picture roll of film? 5. Why do stores put in 25 check-out lanes, and then only open two? 6. How are children able to distinguish and distain the taste of liver and spinach, but have no problem consuming soap, crayons, paste and playdough? 7. If we can see the moon during the day, can the people in China see it, since it is nighttime there? 8. Why does my local library only have one copy of Raggedy Ann, which is always in use, but always has 45 copies of various Harry Potter books on the shelves? 9. Why is it so easy for me to fall asleep in front of the television with noise galore, but then be wide awake when I try to go to bed? 10. If my skin is constantly shedding, why won't my various scars and moles fall off? 11. If my windows and doors are closed, where does all the dust come from? 12. Why are men put in charge of ships in an ocean, satellites in outerspace, and tanks in the desert, but they can't seem to find the ketchup bottle in the refrigerator? 13. Have you noticed that a good haircut grows out twice as fast as a bad one? 14. If spiderwebs are made by spiders, what makes cobwebs -- cobs? 15. Why does the day have fewer hours since I became a mother? What did I do with all the free time I had before? -- Kelly Mieszek ___________________________________________ Kelly lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with her husband and three home schooled children. At least Facebook hopes you'll like these changes. They're big and will completely transform the way many of its 1.6 billion users use social media. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is in Los Angeles today to make the big announcement and we already know most of the changes he'll reveal. Here's what we know. 1. Live in Groups All the changes today make it easier for you to video chat with family and friends, and watch live events from around the world, using Facebook Live. That's its real-time video app that celebrities tested about a year ago, and which Facebook has been gradually rolling out to Android and iOS devices. One new feature is Live in Groups. Instead of just posting live videos on News Feed, so everyone can see it, you can post live videos that only certain people can see. Say you're posting a video of your son's or daughter's wedding, you can share that in a Group for your extended family. Or, if you're posting a live demonstration of a new product at work, you can post it in a Group for customers and coworkers. 2. Live in Events If your family is scattered all over the country, and whose isn't, you can now invite them to birthday parties, graduations, and other events with Live in Events. If they RSVP to an event, they'll be able to watch it live as you post it. Note: A side benefit is your favorite actor, musician, or radio host might give exclusive performances to super fans. 3. Live Reactions You've been seeing and using Facebook's new Reactions. In addition to the long-used "Like" button, you can express yourself with emojis Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, and Angry. Now, you can use them in Facebook Live videos. As Facebook explains in a statement: "People comment more than 10 times more on Facebook Live videos than on regular videos." 4. Live Filters You can now add filters to change the look of your Facebook Live videos. And, soon, you'll be able to scribble notes and doodle on them, too, much like on Instagram and Snapchat. Facebook Live Filters 5. Invite If you want a family member or friend to enjoy a Live video with you as you're watching it, tap the Invite icon. 6. A dedicated place Tap on the new video icon to find live and recorded videos on topics that interest you, and from people, celebrities, and companies you like. 7. Facebook Live Map Check out Facebook Live Map to see where people are posting Live videos around the world. Click on the one you want to watch. Facebook Live Map Keep reading Happening Now http://www.komando.com/happening-now for updates on Facebook's Live Video updates. And watch this Facebook Live video to find out more about its new features. https://vimeo.com/161529744?from=outro-embed Source: Forbes -<>- _ \`\ |= | /- ;.---. _ __.' (____) ` (_____) _' ._ .' (____) ` (___) jgs --`'------'` >Where Did That Come From? SHOT OF WHISKEY In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a "shot" of whiskey. BUYING THE FARM This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if you died you "bought the farm" for your survivors. IRON CLAD CONTRACT This came about from the ironclad ships of the Civil War. It meant something so strong it could not be broken. Riff Raff The Mississippi River was the main way of traveling from north to south. Riverboats carried passengers and freight but they were expensive so most people used rafts. Everything had the right of way over rafts which were considered cheap. The steering oar on the rafts was called a "riff" and this transposed into riff-raff, meaning low class. COBWEB The Old English word for “spider" was "cob". SHIP STATE ROOMS Traveling by steamboat was considered the height of comfort. Passenger cabins on the boats were not numbered. Instead they were named after states. To this day cabins on ships are called staterooms. SLEEP TIGHT Early beds were made with a wooden frame. Ropes were tied across the frame in a cress-cross pattern. A straw mattress was then put on top of the ropes. Over time the ropes stretched, causing the bed to sag. The owner would then tighten the ropes to get a better night's sleep. SHOWBOAT These were floating theaters built on a barge that was pushed by a steamboat. These played small town along the Mississippi River. Unlike the boat shown in the movie "Showboat", these did not have an engine. They were gaudy and attention grabbing which is why we say someone who is being the life of the party is “showboating". OVER A BARREL In the days before CPR, a drowning victim would be placed face down over a barrel and the barrel would be rolled back and forth in an effort to empty the lungs of water. It was rarely effective. If you are over a barrel you are in deep trouble. BARGE IN Heavy freight was moved along the Mississippi in large barges pushed by steamboats. These were hard to control and would sometimes swing into piers or other boats. People would say they were "barged in". HOGWASH Steamboats carried both people and animals. Since pigs smelled so bad they would be washed before being put on board. The mud and other filth that was washed off was considered useless “hog wash". CURFEW The word "curfew" comes from the French phrase "couvre-feu", which means "cover the fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing out all lamps and candles. It was later adopted into Middle English as “curfeu" which later became the modern "curfew". In the early American colonies homes had no real fireplaces so a fire was built in the center of the room. In order to make sure a fire did not get out of control during the night it was required that, by an agreed upon time, all fires would be covered with a clay pot called-a “curfew". BARRELS OF OIL When the first oil wells were drilled, they had made no provision for storing the liquid so they used water barrels. That is why, to this day, we speak of barrels of oil rather than gallons. HOT OFF THE PRESS As the paper goes through the rotary printing press, friction causes it to heat up. Therefore, if you grab the paper right off the press it’s hot. The expression means to get immediate information. There, don't you feel smarter now? --- ...Love these! He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to the finest of delicacies He gave her nothing but the best. He also loved the 3rd wife very much and was always showing her off to neighboring kingdoms. However, he feared that one day she would leave Him for another. He also loved his 2nd wife. She was his confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with him. Whenever the King faced a problem, he could confide in her, and she would help him get through the difficult times. The King's 1st wife was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and kingdom. However, he did not love the first wife. Although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her! One day, the King fell ill and he knew his time was short. He thought of His luxurious life and wondered, I now have four wives with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone." Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?" "No way! replied the 4th wife, and she walked away without another word. Her answer cut like a sharp knife right into his heart. The sad King then asked the 3rd wife, "I loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying; will you follow me and keep me company?" "No! replied the 3rd wife. "Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to remarry!" His heart sank and turned cold. He then asked the 2nd wife, "I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?" "I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time! replied the 2nd wife. "At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave." Her answer struck him like a bolt of lightning, and the King was devastated. Then a voice called out: "I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter Where you go." The King looked up, and there was his first wife. She was very skinny as she suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the King said, "I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!" In truth, we all have the 4 wives in our lives: Our 4th wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it will leave us when we die. Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, it will all go to others. Our 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for us, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave. And our 1st wife is our Soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, our Soul is the only thing that will follow us where ever we go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of us that will follow us to the throne of God, stand with us during our judgement time and if God through Jesus Christ be willing, shall continue to be with us throughout eternity. -<>- , _/ \_ _,--. < , > .-'.' /(/.\ .' .' .""". `/ ` / / / \ /) ; ; ,_.;._ _;-'}/ | | '. )( /' | | /'-._/\_.-' ; ; \_.' \ , \ \ / | _.'/ '. `'-\ /.-/.;,\ '-._ `"""""`_.|`"""`| jgs `"("\/")` |# | \(_/ `-...-' >Jesus Loves Me He was 92 at that time and I wondered why the Church even bothered to ask the old gentleman to preach at that age. After a warm welcome, introduction of this speaker, and as the applause quieted down he rose from his high back chair and walked slowly, with great effort and a sliding gate to the podium. Without a note or written paper of any kind, he placed both hands on the pulpit to steady himself and then quietly and slowly he began to speak.... "When I was asked to come here today and talk to you, your pastor asked me to tell you what was the greatest lesson ever learned in my 50 odd years of preaching. I thought about it for a few days and boiled it down to just one thing that made the most difference in my life and sustained me through all my trials. The one thing that I could always rely on when tears and heart break and pain and fear and sorrow paralyzed me ...the only thing that would comfort was this verse: "Jesus loves me this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong, we are weak but he is strong..... Yes, Jesus loves me... The Bible tells me so." When he finished, the church was quiet. You actually could hear his foot steps as he shuffled back to his chair. I don't believe I will ever forget it. A pastor once stated, "I always noticed that its was the adults who chose the children's hymn 'Jesus Loves Me' (for the children of course) during a hymn sing, and it was the adults who sang the loudest because I could see they knew it the best." Here is a new version of the song just for us who have white hair, or no hair at all. If going wrong, don't worry, they won't last long either. 5. Old Friends are Gold! New Friends are a Diamond! If you get a Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always need a Base of Gold! 6. Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end! 7. A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision!" 9. When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them, and sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone might have prayed for you. 10. If you're spiritually alive, you're going to love this! If you're spiritually dead, you won't want to read it. If you're spiritually curious, there is still hope! A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. "I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" When you are DOWN to nothing..... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment! "When Satan is knocking at your door, simply say, "Jesus, got here ahead of you" --- ...Excellent advice! '-.__ jgs |.' .' .'.'__;.--'--.-' `"-----'"` >A Generous Change of Plans Story Editor: by Linda Gavitt Joyce Schowalter Connecticut, USA In January 1999 planning for my daughter's wedding began with a phone call telling me she and John would marry in March -- leaving little time to plan! Fortunately Lauren wanted a small wedding with 20-30 close friends and relatives. She was in Orlando, Florida, John was stationed in Kentucky, and I was in Connecticut. Her finance's family generously offered their help to plan everything, and their Tampa area home for the reception. I obtained vacation time to attend, but I was my 84-year-old mother's primary caregiver. She had many health issues, and lived in a house near mine. I worried about leaving her alone for 11 or 12 days. I searched for people to check up on Mom or stay with her, but she was uncooperative and didn't want a stranger in her home. While I understood that, it left me with a major problem. I tried to put that aside as I helped with wedding plans as much as possible by phone. We didn't invite my family members to the wedding because of the short notice and the distant location. As the date for Lauren's wedding approached, I arranged for care for my cats, bought my airline ticket, arranged a rental car and bought a dress -- but still had no solution to the problem of my mother being alone. One evening my sister Joan, who lived in South Carolina, called to say she would come to the wedding. She wanted Lauren to have family members present at this significant event in her life. I was surprised and a little worried about adding more people, but gave her the details about dates, and locations. In addition, we'd had problems with finding a hotel because the men's college basketball playoffs were in town at the same time. Joan said she'd start making arrangements to fly or drive to Florida. We began talking about Mom, and I broke down and cried because I was so worried about her staying alone. Joan kept saying Mom would be OK, but I wasn't convinced, because this trip was so long. But we said goodnight and left it at that. About three days later Joan called to say she had a better idea. She would go to our mother's house and stay with her while I was at Lauren's wedding. Of course I cried with surprise and delight. She would arrive two days after I left Connecticut, and leave two days before I returned. Thus my mother would only be alone for a total of four days, and in just two-day increments. I went to Lauren's wedding with a free mind and heart, and enjoyed the days I spent with her in Florida. For that very important day in my and my daughter's life, I will never forget the gift of peace of mind my sister gave me. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >The Right Reason (By Greg Laurie) During His earthly ministry, Jesus faced the problem of people who would follow Him for the wrong reasons. He was constantly challenging them to count the cost and to make sure that their motives were right. He wants us all to follow Him, but He wants us to do it for the right reasons. To truly come to know God, I must come on His terms and not my own. I must do it His way and not mine. It is not for me to pick and choose the commandments in the Bible that personally appeal to me or the attributes that I personally find interesting or appealing. It is for me to live life God's way or not to follow Him at all. It is clear that there are many today who do not follow Him for the right reasons. Jesus taught that there would be those on judgment day who thought they were believers but really were not. In Matthew 7:21, Jesus makes this radical statement, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." If you are primarily interested in what is cool or what is hip or what is socially acceptable, I need to tell you right now that following Jesus Christ probably won't work into your plans. But if you are interested in what is right and what is the best way to spend your life, and if you are interested in the hope of heaven and a life with meaning, then there are no other options to choose from. --- Copyright 2009 by Harvest Ministries. Ashton, 7, recently had a friend over to spend the night. As they were sitting at the dining room table waiting for dinner, Ashton's mother overheard them talking. Carlee mentioned that someone at school had gotten in trouble for saying the "F-word." Carlee told Ashton that at her house they get in big trouble for saying the "F-word, the D-word, and the S-word." Ashton's mother agreed that they don't allow those words to be spoken at their house either. But Ashton's mother found it hard to imagine that Carlee knew what those words were so she asked her to whisper them in her ear.
