She didn't have to say a word. Just being there was proof enough that she loved him. They had both lost someone they loved. So this day, of all days, was a difficult one. She wanted to make this work. She was hurt, lonely and afraid. It wasn't supposed to be this way. But the fact was he knew how she felt. There was an obvious pain in his heart, too. So the one thing that strengthened their love for each other was heartache -- the most sorrowful kind. Their eyes locked. He smiled and she responded. He had a special way of bringing a smile to her face. It was the little things he would do that would touch her heart. But we all know that the essence of true love and commitment is in the little things. She stood there in the doorway and he motioned to her to sit next to him. Not trusting the childish grin he now had on his face, she hesitated for a moment, but gave in. She always did. She sat at the far end of the couch teasing him, he quickly responded by sliding right next to her. She laughed and he knew it was alright. He seemed to be stumbling for just the right words. There was an awkward moment of silence between them. In an effort to calm his nerves she reached over and held his hand. He looked at her with a grateful smile and returned the favor by placing his hand on hers. They looked at each other again, somehow knowing that this was a difficult time for both of them. Then suddenly he reached behind the pillow placed strategically nearby. He pulled out a large red envelope and nervously handed it to her. She snapped back with a look of surprise because she really hadn't expected this. "Wait, this goes with it," he said. Then he handed her a small box, wrapped perfectly in white tissue paper of hearts and flowers. She couldn't believe what was happening. How could he have pulled this off? And why? "Now," he said, "read the card." In great anticipation she ripped the envelope without hesitating. She wanted desperately to see what he had to say to her. She hung on every word. It read as follows: I know that this isn't easy for you. It has been a tough year for both of us. I know that Valentine's Day is a special day for people in love. I am sure that you would rather be out at a fancy dinner, I'm sorry. But I want you to know that... I love you. I know that Valentines are supposed to get chocolate. I went to the store today to buy some for you. I got the last piece. I told the clerk it was just perfect. She stopped for a moment and looked at him. Her eyes sparkled in the light as tears formed in each corner. He knew he had done the right thing. Slowly she unwrapped the box, careful not to rip the paper for she was sure that this was a keeper, a moment she will never forget. Removing the lid she found a chocolate heart that was broken into pieces along with a note: The lady said all she had left was a broken heart. I told her so did we. I am so sorry that Dad left us, Mom. But I just wanted you to know we still have each other. Often we put them into ponytails with holders I call bobbles because of the clear round balls on each end. The ties have a small metal clip in the middle of the covered elastics to keep them together. Last evening while sitting with our oldest daughter she held two of them in her hands that both had red bobbles. Trying to be funny she asked me what colour they were, so I thought I would play her game and said "They're not both the same colour - one of them is red and the other is orange". After holding them up to her eye she held a strange look on her face and questioned, "Are you sure?" After several serious remarks I was quite surprised how little convincing she actually needed for her to believe that one was red and one was orange. Even more, by the end she could actually point out to me, which one was red and which one was orange. They WERE both red! It was a wonderful opportunity to explain to my daughter how easy it is for someone to convince us that not all things appear as they seem, and how easy it is for someone to convince us out of that which we already know to be. Even though we KNOW that God made the world as He has told us in the Bible, many will try to convince us of their theories of how the world began, to lead us astray. Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth." (KJV) If we believe the Bible to be true then there is nothing to add or take away. We must hold on to that belief with ALL our heart, mind and soul and hold fast to what we know and have learned from His word. To prevent others from being able to convince us of their theories it is not how we "see" things or how we think we should "see" things, but how God "sees" them and that we live accordingly. Gets you to question what you know is true as he did with Eve in the garden asking her: Gen.3 [1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? The fact that the devil got her to respond to him was the beginning of Eve's down fall. She should have ignored him or told him to leave her alone. She should Not have engaged in conversation with him. Eph.4: [27] Neither give place to the devil. Why? Because as Genesis 3:1 said 'the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field...' Subtil means - cunning, crafty. We are not to listen or give him any place in our lives because he can out think, out trick and out lie us. He is far more experienced - far more cunning and crafty. Gen.3 [2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: [3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. But here is what God Actually commanded... Gen.2: [16] And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: [17] But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. So making Eve think about it, she added to God's word saying that TOUCHING it would make her die too. Now the devil knows he has her because she doesn't know God's Word - her weapon (her sword - God's Word) iss not sharp. So the devil knows he can get away with telling her a big fat lie to make her completely doubt God's Word... Gen.3: [4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: [5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And that got her to question God and His Word and what was real and what was true. So then it was all over. The devil won. He had her. Gen.3: [6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. It all started with a little question and ended with the complete fall of both Adam and Eve. If you can do anything, do it. Have a heart and help us!" Jesus said, "If? There are no 'ifs' among believers. Anything can happen." No sooner were the words out of his mouth than the father cried, "Then I believe. Help me with my doubts!" Mark 9:22-24 (MSG) *** *** *** *** Is it possible to be filled with faith and doubt at the same time? Yes! You can have faith that God wants you to do something and still be scared to death. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is going ahead and doing what you're called to do in spite of your fear. You have to begin with the faith you already have: it may be just a little, but you start there. A beautiful example of this is the story of the man who brought his sick son to Jesus in Mark 9. Jesus looked at the man and said, "I can heal your son. If you will believe, I will heal him." The father then makes a classic statement: "Lord, I do believe. Help me overcome my unbelief." Have you ever felt like that? "Lord, I have some faith. But I also have some doubts." This man was filled with faith and doubt, yet despite his honest doubts, he went ahead and asked Jesus for a miracle. And he got his miracle – Jesus healed his son. Mustard seed faith moves mountains. No matter how weak or how frail you think your faith is, it's enough to get you through what you're facing because your "little faith" is in a big God. Matthew 17:20 says, "If you have faith as small as the mustard seed, nothing will be impossible to you." That's not a lot of faith; in fact, it's just a little faith. But what else does that verse teach? "If you have faith as the mustard seed, you can say to the mountain, 'Move' and it will be moved." Mustard seed faith moves mountains. Don't get this reversed; we tend to read this verse backward; we want it to say, "If you have faith like a mountain, you can move a mustard seed" – as if it takes enormous faith to do a very little task. Everybody has faith. You had faith this morning when you ate your cereal – faith that your spouse didn't put poison in your granola! You had faith when you sat down in your computer chair – faith that it wouldn't collapse. Everybody has faith; the difference is what you put your faith in. Sometimes people will tell me they don't want to surrender to Jesus until all their questions are answered; they don't want to make a commitment until every thing is understand. God wants you start with the faith you have; and based on the example of the mustard seed, you don't need a whole lot of faith to do great things for God. You just need a little. So here's a trustworthy equation: Little Faith + Big God = Huge Results! · You take your little faith; "Lord, I believe! Help me with my unbelief!" · And you place your faith in our big God, · And then he'll show you how he works out huge results. -<>- If you have hundred rupees in your hand, and you give away ten rupees to someone, there will be only ninety rupees left. The old man was looking at the engine. I put my groceries away in my car and continued to watch the old gentleman from about twenty five feet away. I saw a young man in his early twenties with a grocery bag in his arm, walking towards the old man. The old gentleman saw him coming too and took a few steps towards him. I saw the old gentleman point to his open hood and say something. The young man put his grocery bag into what looked like a brand new Cadillac Escalade and then turn back to the old man and I heard him yell at the old gentleman saying, 'You shouldn't even be allowed to drive a car at your age.' And then with a wave of his hand, he got in his car and peeled rubber out of the parking lot. I saw the old gentleman pull out his handkerchief and mop his brow as he went back to his car and again looked at the engine. He then went to his wife and spoke with her and appeared to tell her it would be okay. I had seen enough and I approached the old man. He saw me coming and stood straight and as I got near him I said, 'Looks like you're having a problem.' He smiled sheepishly and quietly nodded his head. I looked under the hood myself and knew that whatever the problem was, it was beyond me. Looking around I saw a gas station up the road and told the old man that I would be right back. I drove to the station and went inside and saw three attendants working on cars. I approached one of them and related the problem the old man had with his car and offered to pay them if they could follow me back down and help him. The old man had pushed the heavy car under the shade of a tree and appeared to be comforting his wife. When he saw us he straightened up and thanked me for my help. As the mechanics diagnosed the problem (overheated engine) I spoke with the old gentleman. When I shook hands with him earlier he had noticed my Marine Corps ring and had commented about it, telling me that he had been a Marine too. I nodded and asked the usual question, 'What outfit did you serve with?' He had mentioned that he served with the first Marine Division at Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal . He had hit all the big ones and retired from the Corps after the war was over. As we talked we heard the car engine come on and saw the mechanics lower the hood. They came over to us as the old man reached for his wallet, but was stopped by me and I told him I would just put the bill on my AAA card. He still reached for the wallet and handed me a card that I assumed had his name and address on it and I stuck it in my pocket. We all shook hands all around again and I said my goodbye's to his wife. I then told the two mechanics that I would follow them back up to the station. Once at the station I told them that they had interrupted their own jobs to come along with me and help the old man. I said I wanted to pay for the help, but they refused to charge me. One of them pulled out a card from his pocket looking exactly like the card the old man had given to me. Both of the men told me then, that they were Marine Corps Reserves. Once again we shook hands all around and as I was leaving, one of them told me I should look at the card the old man had given to me. I said I would and drove off. For some reason I had gone about two blocks when I pulled over and took the card out of my pocket and looked at it for a long, long time. The name of the old gentleman was on the card in golden leaf and under his name. "Congressional Medal of Honor Society." I sat there motionless looking at the card and reading it over and over. I looked up from the card and smiled to no one but myself and marveled that on this day, four Marines had all come together, because one of us needed help. He was an old man all right, but it felt good to have stood next to greatness and courage and an honor to have been in his presence. Remember, old men like him gave us FREEDOM for America' America is not at war. The U.S. Military is at war. America is at the Mall. Although we visit our families in the U.S.A. once a year, we didn't really give much thought to the changes my husband's aging parents and aunts were going through. Suddenly there was only one person left: his mother. His mom is a diabetic in her mid-80s, a heart attack survivor with bad knees, and an independent lady whose English is an increasingly rusty second language now that she is alone. Her driving has become more erratic, and she falls more frequently. The house she loves and has lived in for over 40 years has become challenging for her. She is faced with making it safer or moving to senior housing. We made separate yearly visits to give her more company, but otherwise could only try to help from afar. Sometimes our help led to more problems, such as when I arranged to have my mother-in-law's many medications mailed to her. This eliminated the one-hour drive that she had been making for years to a military base pharmacy. As a result, she had to frequently hobble down her steep front steps and walk up an incline along an open drainage ditch to get to her street side mailbox. I applied for a nonprofit community development grant to install a ramp in place of her steps, but the slope of the lawn made the ramp too expensive. On other occasions, we couldn't get the resources my mother-in-law needed right away. On my last visit, she had trouble standing for more than 10 minutes because of a fall. On her limited income, she couldn't afford a helper, so I contacted the county senior services for light housekeeping services. However, there was a waiting list and it was months later when the housekeeping service became available. During the application process, to our surprise, my mother-in-law was assigned a social worker specializing in senior citizens. I assumed it this was just to verify that she needed the service. I didn't realize that Lori, the social worker, could and would do much more. Lori makes home visits and takes the time to patiently understand what my mother-in-law's needs are. She has gone with my mother-in-law to the doctor, arranged for a mailbox and mail delivery at the front door, and even pushed through a modified, affordable version of the stalled ramp project. Lori has even driven my mother-in-law to see several senior housing complexes. On top of all this, she emails me updates to let me know about options and resources. I know it's Lori's job to know what to do and who to go to in order to resolve issues common to senior citizens; however, Lori doesn't stop there. When there is something that would help my mother-in-law, Lori runs with it and sees it through -- as if my mother-in-law were her only case. Thank you, Lori, for making such a difference, both for my mother-in-law and for us. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Kidwarmers: .---. .---. ,';' `.';' `.. f :Bo. ` d88: `\ /d88P' `\ ; /d888P' `. It was quite an experience for Zack, 8, and Brooklyn, 6, and they especially liked helping to tip the maid, bartenders, tour guides, bus drivers, etc. On the way back home, once the plane had landed, Zack loudly asked his Dad, "Do we have to tip the pilot now, too?!" -- Jodi (mother of Zack and Brooklyn) of Ontario, Canada Peggy's neighbor had a truck cap sitting on his lawn with a "For Sale" sign on it. Peggy drove by the house a number of times with her 4-year-old granddaughter Kirsten. Peggy noticed that each time they drove by, Kirsten would get quiet, as though she were thinking about something. Finally, one day Kirsten turned to Peggy and asked, very seriously, "Grandma, how come they buried that truck?" -- Peggy Verburg of Angola, Indiana ,-""-. .-""-. / -. \/ -. \ ( ) \ / \ / `. ,' `. ,' hjw `.,' ,-"-,-"-. (By Christine Chipman) In your times of deep despair, Do you feel there is no hope? As the darkness closes in on you, Do you feel you cannot cope? As you struggle on through every trial, Do you say "When will it end"? As you cry yourself to sleep at night, Do you wish you had a friend? When your body's racked with aches and pains, Do you feel you are alone? When you think about the future, Do you fear the great unknown? There is someone who really cares, And He hears your every cry. His arms are reaching out to you, And on Him you can rely. When things close in around you, He sees your fear and doubt - He wants to hold you in His arms, And He will never cast you out. As you stumble through the darkness, He will be your guiding light. He wants to wipe away your tears, For you are precious in His sight. Reach out right now to Jesus, And let Him take complete control - He'll take that heavy burden, And He'll touch and make you whole. He's reaching out His arms to you, And He wants to be your friend. Let Him take you in His loving arms, For His love will never end. --- ...Amen!
