>I WISH I KNEW
by Kelly Mieszek
I truly enjoy trivia.
The topic is irrelevant, for I will read any off-beat, odd-ball set
of facts or list assembled, be it arranged numerically, alphabetically,
by frequency of occurance, time sequence of events, or people polled.
I'm a trivia junkie. However, there are a few questions that seem
to elude every list I've ever perused. These questions bug me, popping
up in my thoughts with routine frequency. How I wish someone could
provide the answers so that I can file these questions away and clear
that space on my mental hard drive.
Who can help me?
1. If someone puts on a pair of shoes there's a 50/50 chance of getting
them on the correct feet. So why does my preschooler put them on the
wrong feet 95% of the time?
2. How come I don't feel the hundreds of red ants crawling on my feet
until they are all assembled and give the "all bite" signal?
3. Did the person who invented playdough have carpet?
4. If blinking only takes a fraction of a second, how are the majority
of people able to capture someone doing it at least twice on a 24
picture roll of film?
5. Why do stores put in 25 check-out lanes, and then only open two?
6. How are children able to distinguish and distain the taste of liver
and spinach, but have no problem consuming soap, crayons, paste and
playdough?
7. If we can see the moon during the day, can the people in China see
it, since it is nighttime there?
8. Why does my local library only have one copy of Raggedy Ann, which
is always in use, but always has 45 copies of various Harry Potter books
on the shelves?
9. Why is it so easy for me to fall asleep in front of the television
with noise galore, but then be wide awake when I try to go to bed?
10. If my skin is constantly shedding, why won't my various scars and
moles fall off?
11. If my windows and doors are closed, where does all the dust come
from?
12. Why are men put in charge of ships in an ocean, satellites in
outerspace, and tanks in the desert, but they can't seem to find the
ketchup bottle in the refrigerator?
13. Have you noticed that a good haircut grows out twice as fast as a
bad one?
14. If spiderwebs are made by spiders, what makes cobwebs -- cobs?
15. Why does the day have fewer hours since I became a mother? What
did I do with all the free time I had before?
If you can answer any of these questions, please let me know.

>Tips:
Smelly hands from cooking ...yuck!
Garlic, onions and fish can leave a strong smell on your hands that
can't always be removed with soap and hot water. To get rid of stubborn
odors, apply mouthwash to your hands using a cotton ball, let dry, then
rinse. The oxidizers and zinc in the mouthwash neutralize the sulfur
compounds that cause the strong smells.
Plastic containers - It's unsafe to reuse plastic water bottles:
Once saliva, sweat, and bacteria get inside the bottle, there's no way
to completely clean or sanitize it. Also, after extended use and re-
washing, the plastic starts to break down. That's why commercial bottled
water is stamped with a two-year (or less) expiration date. Although the
water doesn't really "expire," it acquires an off taste.

>TURNING POINT
I heard a quote from a body builder once that went something like the
following: "Each day you either become a little bit stronger or a
little bit weaker, but you never stay the same."
My interpretation of this is that every day we should strive to be the
best that we can be in all areas of life. Even on days when you are
struggling, it is important to remember that it just takes a positive
attitude to turn things around for the better.
My dad took me to my first Green Bay Packers game when I was eight years
old. At the time, I really did not know much about football other than
it was a tough guy's sport. All I knew was that the Packers were playing
the Cincinnati Bengals and that the Packers were not a very good team.
They had lost all previous games in that season and it had been years
since the Packers had a winning season. The year was 1992 and I was
astonished at the atmosphere and crowd of being at a football game. I
thought that it was the coolest thing.
On one particular play, the packers quarterback Don Majowski hurt his
ankle and had to leave the game. I remember a negative comment from a
nearby fan who stated that the Packers had no chance of winning now.
Out stepped the Packers back up quarterback Brett Favre. The beginning
of the game did not go well for Favre and he ended up fumbling the ball
four times and getting sacked often. Despite the fact the he was
struggling, Favre kept the team in the game and they were down by six
points with less than a minute to go in the game.
Favre had the ball and threw a long pass to Sterling Sharpe. Then, with
eight seconds to go, Favre threw the winning touchdown to wide receiver
Kitrick Taylor. The crowd went wild! Favre ran around the field
celebrating, and first year coach Mike Holmgren was as happy as could
be.
The Packers carried on that momentum for the rest of the season and just
missed the playoffs at 9-7. Even though they missed the playoffs that
year, the 1992 season was a special season for the Green Bay Packers. It
marked the beginning of the Brett Favre era and also the start of a
dynasty in which the team would win the Super Bowl in 1996. From that
1992 game forward, Favre began the longest consecutive starts streak for
a quarterback in NFL history.
As a Packers fan, I have witnessed many up and down seasons since then,
but this game helps instill a special memory -- a memory so powerful
that I feel like a turn for the better can happen anytime.
Who would have ever thought that game would have ended the way that it
did? And who would have thought that a great NFL quarterback and team
would have been born on that day?
-- Ben Mueller

>Use It Or Lose It - I like this part...
I heard a quote from a body builder once that went something like the

My son works as a Occupational Therapist and knows this is true. He
mostly works with the elderly because they are ones that often need
extra therapy work. This hadn't hit home for me so much until I read
that the reason so many people tend to fall more frequently as they
get older is not because they have loss of equilibrium as I had once
thought but mostly they tend to be less stable because they lose the
muscles that help steady them. Physically inactive people can lose
as much as 3% to 5% of their muscle mass each decade after age 30.
Most men will lose about 30% of their muscle mass during their
lifetimes. It takes work, dedication, and a plan, but it is never too
late to rebuild muscle and maintain it.
The old 'use it or lose it' definitely applies here!
This not only applies for our muscles, but for our brain. Just
reading isn't going to stop age related brain loss, however, this
study from Harvard just might be of some assistance to you...

On Thursday, May 27, 1999, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a
victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado,
was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's sub-committee.
What he said to our national leaders during this special session of
Congress was painfully truthful. They were not prepared for what he was
to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent,
every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist,
and every so-called expert!
These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful,
penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this
man as a voice crying in the wilderness.
The following is a portion of the transcript:
"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the
hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the
seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott,
and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who
died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers."
"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel
out in the field. The villain was not the club he used. Neither was it
the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and
the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart."
"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how
quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not
a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am
not here to represent or defend the NRA -because I don't believe that
they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe
that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do
with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent."
"I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy--it
was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the
real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the
blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves."
"I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.
This was written way before I knew I would be speaking here today:"
Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, soul, and
spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we
create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and
wreak havoc. Spiritual influences were present within our educational
systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges
began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has
happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so
doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as
terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs--politicians immediately look for
a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more
restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private
liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws."
"Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No
amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type
of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts. Political
posturing and restrictive legislation are not the answers. The young
people of our nation hold the key. There is a spiritual awakening taking
place that will not be squelched! We do not need more religion. We do
not need more gaudy television evangelists spewing out verbal religious
garbage. We do not need more million dollar church buildings built while
people with basic needs are being ignored. We do need a change of heart
and a humble acknowledgment that this nation was founded on the
principle of simple trust in God!"
"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his
two friends murdered before his very eyes -- he did not hesitate to pray
in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I
challenge every young person in America, and around the world, to
realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was
brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by
those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a
sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to
communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the
NRA I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine your own heart
before casting the first stone!
My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this
country will not allow that to happen!"

>Keep on Singing
Like any good mother, when Karen found out that another baby was on
the way, she did what she could to help her 3-year-old son, Michael,
prepare for a new sibling. They find out that the new baby is going to
be a girl, and day after day, night after night, Michael sings to his
sister in Mommy's tummy.
The pregnancy progresses normally for Karen, an active member of the
Panther Creek United Methodist Church in Morristown, Tennessee. Then the
labor pains come. Every five minutes ... every minute. But complications
arise during delivery. Hours of labor. Would a C-section be required?
Finally, Michael's little sister is born. But she is in serious
condition. With siren howling in the night, the ambulance rushes the
infant to the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Mary's Hospital,
Knoxville, Tennessee.
The days inch by. The little girl gets worse. The pediatric tells the
parents, "There is very little hope. Be prepared for the worst."
Karen and her husband contact a local cemetery about a burial plot. They
have fixed up a special room in their home for the new baby - now they
plan a funeral.
Michael, keeps begging his parents to let him see his sister, "I want
to sing to her," he says.
Week two in intensive care. It looks as if a funeral will come before
the week is over. Michael keeps nagging about singing to his sister, but
kids are never allowed in Intensive Care. But Karen makes up her mind.
She will take Michael whether they like it or not. If he doesn't see his
sister now, he may never see her alive.
She dresses him in an oversized scrub suit and marches him into ICU.
He looks like a walking laundry basket, but the head nurse recognizes
him as a child and bellows, "Get that kid out of here now! No children
are allowed.
The mother rises up strong in Karen, and the usually mild-mannered
lady glares steel-eyed into the head nurse's face, her lips a firm
line. "He is not leaving until he sings to his sister!"
Karen tows Michael to his sister's bedside. He gazes at the tiny
infant losing the battle to live. And he begins to sing. In the pure
hearted voice of a 3-year-old, Michael sings:
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine,
you make me happy when skies are gray --- "
Instantly the baby girl responds. The pulse rate becomes calm and
steady.
Keep on singing, Michael.
"You never know, dear, how much I love
you, Please don't take my sunshine away---"
The ragged, strained breathing becomes as smooth as a kitten's purr.
Keep on singing, Michael.
"The other night, dear,
as I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you
in my arms..."
Michael's little sister relaxes as rest, healing rest, seems to sweep
over her.
Keep on singing, Michael.
Tears conquer the face of the bossy head nurse. Karen glows.
"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
Please don't, take my
sunshine away.
Funeral plans are scrapped. The next, day-the very next day -- the
little girl is well enough to go home!
Woman's Day magazine called it "the miracle of a brother's song." The
medical staff just called it a miracle. Karen called it a miracle of
God's love!
NEVER GIVE UP ON THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE
Sometimes you read something so beautiful it just makes your day so
special and all the bad stuff goes away. Hope your day is great!

>Beautiful words
Someone has written these beautiful words. One must read and try to
understand the deep meanings in them. They are like the Ten Commandments
to follow in life all the time.
1] Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble; it
is a "steering wheel" that directs us in the right path throughout life.
2] Do you know why a car's WINDSHIELD is so large & the rear view mirror
is so small? Because our PAST is not as important as our FUTURE. So,
look ahead and move on.
3] Friendship is like a BOOK. It takes few seconds to burn, but it takes
years to write.
4] All things in life are temporary. If going well enjoy it, they will
not last forever. If going wrong don't worry, they can't last long
either.
5] Old friends are like Gold! New friends are Diamonds! If you get a
Diamond, don't forget the Gold! Because to hold a Diamond, you always
need a base of Gold!
6] Often when we lose hope and think this is the end, GOD smiles from
above and says, "Relax, sweetheart, it's just a bend, not the end!
7] When GOD solves your problems, you have faith in HIS abilities; when
GOD doesn't solve your problems HE has faith in your abilities.
8] A blind person asked St. Anthony: "Can there be anything worse than
losing eye sight?" He replied: "Yes, losing your vision."
9] When you pray for others, God listens to you and blesses them; and
sometimes, when you are safe and happy, remember that someone has prayed
for you.
10] WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES; it takes away
today's PEACE.
If you really enjoy this, PLEASE pass to others. It may brighten
someone's day... Praying for love and peace to fill the coming year.

...So True and beautiful! Thanks GloriaB!

>I'll Take Half Story Editor:
by Donna Quist Joyce Schowalter
Virginia, USA
In 1979 I joined the Air Force, following the tradition of my family.
I sought a coveted slot in the Air Medical Evacuation Squadron.
After two years of hard work, I held orders to report to flight school
in 60 days. Seven days later, I was rear-ended at a stoplight by a car
going 55 m.p.h. I was shoved through the intersection -- the driver kept
going. I was hospitalized for three weeks with severe whiplash and two
torn back muscles. I knew the minute the flight surgeon was notified, my
dream job disappeared.
Friends pressed me to call an attorney. At first I was too depressed,
but I became angry, realizing this woman had destroyed my dreams. I
would sue.
Six weeks later, there was no word rescinding my orders. A few months
later, miraculously, I was living my dream job.
When my attorney asked about my condition, I told him honestly I was
usually in pain. My job required lots of lifting. Nonetheless, I
couldn't see the flight surgeon or be grounded.
My attorney said, "A guaranteed minimum $500,000 for loss of career."
With the idealism (or stupidity) of youth, I didn't want money, I wanted
to fly Med Evac. He had to settle the case.
Months later, he said he could only get $14,200. It sounded like a
fortune, but he explained that after the Air Force claimed for my
medical care and his fee, I'd get $3,500.
I had my dream job, so told him to settle.
When I signed the papers, he handed me a check for $8,200. My eyes
bulged, I knew that amount couldn't be right. That was a year's salary
for me, tax free!
My attorney explained that my injury was honest and probably permanent,
yet I would get less than anyone in the settlement. That bothered him.
He contacted the Air Force to convince them to lower their claim. They
agreed... on one condition. If he'd reduce his fee to me, the Air Force
would match it, up to 50 percent.
He called their bluff, dropping his fee 50 percent. He said he saw so
many people wanting to scam the system. While he understood my position,
he believed (accurately) my injuries would catch up with me. He wanted
to make sure I had as much compensation as I could under the
circumstances.
One year later the military forced me into another field. Five years
later, I was medically retired due to back problems from that accident.
I went home to family in northern Virginia a very scared young woman.
At age 30, with no transferable skills, my back injury limited me to a
non-physical profession. Cost of living in Virginia was high, but the
settlement money had been invested and allowed me to buy a home. With my
entry-level wages, I never could have saved enough to purchase a home.
I literally owe the roof over my children's heads to the generosity,
kindness and integrity of that attorney.

>Hope: Wishful Thinking or Something More?
In a Peanut's cartoon Lucy encourages Charlie Brown: "Look at it this
way, Charlie Brown," she consoles. "These are your bitter days. These
are the days of your hardship and struggle ..." The next frame goes on:
"... but if you just hold your head up high and keep on fighting, you'll
triumph!" "Gee, do you really think so, Lucy?" Charlie asks. As she
walks away Lucy says: "Frankly, no!"
Hope is like that. We speak of it more often than we believe in it. Hope
is not a strong word for us. It has more to do with "wishing" than
"expecting." It has the sound of resignation, an inability to bring
about, influence, or even believe that a desired event or goal might
ever come to be.

>THE BLESSINGS OF A STORM
I did not know His love before,
The way I know it now.
I could not see my need for Him,
My pride would not allow.
I had it all, without a care,
The "self-sufficient" lie.
My path was smooth, my sea was still,
Not a cloud was in my sky.
I thought I knew His love for me,
I thought I'd seen His grace,
I thought I did not need to grow,
I thought I'd found my place.
But when the way grew rough and dark,
The storm clouds quickly rolled;
The waves began to rock my ship,
My anchor would not hold.
The ship that I had built myself
Was made of foolish pride.
It fell apart and left me bare,
With nowhere else to hide.
I had no strength or faith to face
The trials that lay ahead,
And so I simply prayed to Him
And bowed my weary head.
His loving arms enveloped me,
And then He helped me stand.
He said, "You still must face this storm,
But I will hold your hand."
So through the dark and lonely night
He guided me through pain.
I could not see the light of day
Or when the storm might wane.
Yet through the aches and endless tears,
My faith began to grow.
I could not see it at the time,
But my light began to glow.
I saw God's love in brand new light,
His grace and mercy, too.
For only when all self was gone
Could Jesus' love shine through.
It was not easy in the storm,
I sometimes wondered, "Why?"
At times I thought, "I can't go on."
I'd hurt and doubt and cry.
But Jesus never left my side,
He guided me each day.
Through pain and strife,
Through fire and flood,
He helped me all the way.
And now I see as never before
How great His love can be.
How in my weakness He is strong,
How Jesus cares for me!
He worked it all out for my good,
Although the way was rough.
He only sent what I could bear,
And then He cried, "Enough!"
He raised His hand and said, "Be still!"
He made the storm clouds cease.
He opened up the gates of joy
And flooded me with peace.
I see His face now clearer still,
I felt His presence strong.
I found anew His faithfulness,
He never did me wrong.
Now I know more storms will come,
But only for my good,
For pain and tears have helped me grow
As naught else ever could.
I still have so much more to learn
As Jesus works in me;
If in the storm I'll love Him more,
That's where I want to be.
