Baker After many years of trying to brighten the season for needy children, my husband and I happened upon an Angel Tree for nursing home residents -- the often forgotten fragile, lonely ones in our society. Some have outlived their children, others have children not willing to travel across the country, while some have no family or friends whatsoever. They are left to languish alone on our holiest holiday. These are ones we owe so much -- they are survivors of wars that kept our country free. Many suffered during the Great Depression simply trying to put food on the table for their families. They are all strong folks that could teach us much and deserve our absolute respect! Most of them did not have easy lives and in their final years. Many are the "forgotten ones." In my eyes, nothing could be more shameful! My husband, Jerry, instantly grabbed a card for a gentleman from that very special Angel Tree, while I selected the name of an older lady. Then we launched into an all-out shopping spree. The only information we had was first names, ages, and two wish lists. Never have I given such thought to each and every purchase. Making Christmas special for these two older kids became an obsession for both of us on a cold winter's afternoon. The gentleman had simply asked for music CDs. There was no mention of what type of music or any particular singer he enjoyed. We were both perplexed and then it hit us like a rock! Doing a little math we figured out what years he'd have been a teenager and took it from there. We purchased several CD's of hits from that time, as well as hits on into his twenties and thirties. The dear lady had requested only a robe. After some thought, I knew it must be washable, warm and of durable fabric to withstand being washed at the nursing facility. I located a lovely, plush, terry cloth robe with a bit of pink "girly" embellishment down the front -- the tag even said it could be bleached. But, what woman wouldn't enjoy new house slippers to match her robe? I tracked those down as well! Jerry and I were so wound up at that stage of the game that we couldn't stop with simply the items that had been requested. "What's Christmas without a box of fine assorted chocolates?" Jerry asked. I giggled and agreed, but as we headed to the candy department I realized one of them could possibly be diabetic. We found wonderful sugar-free assortments of chocolates that could satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth. Still, it seemed something was lacking. "I wonder how long it's been since this little gal enjoyed a bottle of nice perfume!" I wondered. We sprayed and sniffed until we found a mild scent that seemed suitable, and so hoped she wouldn't be allergic. I also included hand and body lotion. In my heart I knew she'd once again feel spry and beautiful as she pampered herself with the delicious aroma. Then, Jerry piped up, "Boys are never too old for toys!" After studying every small-scale model car and truck in the store, he chose several that would have been popular when the older gentleman likely purchased his first "set of wheels," and possibly his first family auto as a young married man. They would be nice remembrances placed on his bedside table or dresser to remind him of "the good old days." I took great care in wrapping all items. The packages had to be beautiful. All the while I envisioned the sparkle in their aged eyes when opening each gift, and prayed our efforts would create a very blessed and Merry Christmas for two genuinely deserving people. No, that year they were not forgotten! In fact, they are never forgotten in our home. Each holiday season we discuss the joy that filled our hearts that year as we attempted to sprinkle the Christmas season with a bit of bliss for two aged, forgotten, souls. In remembrance of two nursing home residents who, every year, remind us of the reason for the season. -- Kathleene S. '.___/ >NEVER TOO OLD It didn't look much like Christmas that December 23, 1969. The trees were lush, the countryside awash in green. There was no hint of snow in the sweltering heat. In fact, I was the only thing that looked like Christmas. I was perched in the open door of a helicopter hovering about fifty feet over the center of a dusty village in the III Tactical Corps area of Vietnam. Instead of the ubiquitous olive drab the cloaked everything military, I was clad in a bright red Santa suit, complete with hat and white beard. I had a sack of toys slung over my shoulder replacing the M-16 I usually carried. I wanted to make the entrance into the village square as quickly as possible before the beard turned gray with sweat and dust. I checked the harness of my rappelling gear, gave a thumbs-up to the chopper crew, and jumped out into space. I slid down the rope and made a soft landing in the center of the square. The helicopter departed in a final cloud of dust while I looked around the square. Dozens of kids were arrayed around me. Interpreters and Vietnamese- language slingers informing them that something joyful and wonderful would happen had summoned them. I could tell from the puzzled looks on their faces though that these kids still weren't too sure that my arrival was the "something joyful and wonderful." My silly "ho-ho-ho" didn't help much either. The kids kept shrinking farther away from this stranger in red, and I thought my Santa Claus routine would be just another failed attempt to impose western ideas on an eastern culture. I sat down in the middle of the square, wondering how I could let these kids know that Santa was one of the good guys. My mouth was still fuzzy with dust from my landing in the village, so I opened a butterscotch drop and popped it into my mouth to chase away the cobwebs. Instantly, the kids started inching closer. It took me a minute to realize they were drawn by the sight of food. I peeled the wrapper off another and held it out in my hand. Slowly, one little girl allowed the allure of the candy to overcome her reluctance. She came forward to take the butterscotch from my hand. She put it in her mouth, and the half-frightened look on her face blossomed into a beautiful flower of a smile. Then the dam broke and all the kids from all corners of the square were ionized to the magnet of the sweet stuff. They sat on me and touched me and laughed and giggled and smiled. I couldn't peel wrappers off fast enough so I just started throwing the candy into the air. The kids scrambled frantically for it at first, but then returned to their better nature when they realized there would be enough for all of them. Having captured their attention with the candy, I then broke out some small spiral notebooks and pens. As they marveled over their collective treasures, I went into the crowd of adults in the periphery with my fellow GIs and started handing out food from c-ration packs and from the packages we'd received from home. My mother's chocolate chip cookies were a big hit. The Vietnamese bowed and gestured and spoke their rapid-fire reactions but what I understood best were the smiles. We handed out Coke and Dr. Pepper and Pepsi and whatever else we'd scrounged for our gift-giving and, after a short while, everyone in the village had been given something in celebration of the birth of a little baby none of them had ever heard of. We didn't have much peace to spread beyond that precious hour of sanity in the asylum of Vietnam, but we did have an abundance of good will to share. Yes, I've studied at some great colleges in my life and I've been taught by some of the greatest minds of our time, but I've never learned a lesson quite like the one I did in that tiny village square on that special Christmas in 1969. Those Vietnamese knew nothing of Christianity and cared even less about it. They never heard of Christmas before that day and certainly have never celebrated it since, however I know with utter certainty that they taught me more about the real meaning of Christmas than I ever thought I'd learn. Christmas is not complicated. It rests in the hearts of people everywhere, all the time. Christmas is pure and it is simple. We can find Christmas ever day, in so very many ways. Christmas is love and when we show it, we get it back. The child born that first Christmas was never too young to teach that, and I pray that none of us are ever too old to learn it. - Stephen T. He strung some twinkly lights And hung a sign up with a nail; "FRESH CHRISTMAS TREES" It said in red "FRESH CHRISTMAS TREES FOR SALE." He poured himself hot cocoa In a steaming thermos cup, And snowflakes started falling As a family car pulled up. A mom, a dad, and one small boy Who looked no more than three Jumped out and started searching For the perfect Christmas tree. The boy marched up and down the rows, His nose high in the air; "It smells like Christmas, mom! "It smells like Christmas everywhere!" "Let's get the biggest tree we can! "A tree that's ten miles high! "A tree to go right through our roof! "A tree to touch the sky!" "A tree SO big "That Santa Claus "Will stop and stare and say, "'Now, THAT'S the finest Christmas tree "'I've seen this Christmas Day!'" It seemed they looked at every tree At least three million times; Dad shook them, pinched them, turned them 'round To find the perfect pine. "I've found it, mom! "The Christmas tree I like the best of all! "It's got a little bare spot, "But we'll turn that to the wall!" "We'll put great-grandma's angel "On top the highest bough! "Oh, can we buy it? "Please, mom, PLEASE?! "Oh, can we buy it NOW?" "How 'bout some nice hot cocoa?" Asked the man who owned the lot. He twisted off the thermos top, "Now, THIS will hit the spot!" He poured the steaming chocolate In three tiny paper cups. They toasted, "Here's to Christmas!" And they drank the cocoa up. "Is this your choice?" The tree man asked, "This pine's the best one here!" The boy seemed sad--- "My daddy says "The price is just too dear." "Then, Merry Christmas!" Said the man, who wrapped the tree in twine, "It's yours for just one promise "You must keep at Christmas time!" "On Christmas Eve at bedtime "As you fold your hands to pray, "Promise in your heart "To keep the joy of Christmas Day!" "Now hurry home! This freezy wind "Is turning your cheeks pink! "And ask your dad "To trim that trunk and give that tree a drink!" And so it went on All that blustery eve As the tree man gave Tree upon tree upon tree To every last person Who came to the lot--- Who toasted with cocoa In small paper cups, Who promised the promise Of joy in their hearts--- And singing out carols, Drove off in the dark. And when it was over One tree stood alone; But no one was left there To give it a home. The tree man put on his Red parka and hood And dragged the last Christmas tree Out to the woods. He left the pine right by a stream In the cold, So the wood's homeless creatures Could make it their home. He smiled as he brushed off Some snow from his beard, When out of the thicket A reindeer appeared. He scratched that huge reindeer On top his huge head--- "It looks like we've "Started up Christmas again!" "There are miles more to travel, "And much more to do! "Let's go home, my friend, "And get started anew!" He looked to the sky And heard jingle bells sound--- And then, In a twinkling, That tree man was gone! The End ©1992 Howard D. The Civil War broke out that same year, and it seemed this was an additional punishment. Two years later, Longfellow was again saddened to hear that his own son had been seriously wounded as a lieutenant in the Army of the Potomac. Sitting down to his desk, one Christmas Day, he heard the church bells ringing, and ringing. It was in this setting he wrote: I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old familiar carols play And wild and sweet the words repeat Of peace on earth, good will to men. And in despair I bowed my head There is no peace on earth I said For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep, God is not dead, nor doth he sleep. The wrong shall fail, the right prevail With peace on earth, good will to men. At this Christmas time whether you are in sorrow or in joy you can know that God is not dead, not doth he sleep. He knows your every need and longs to comfort you and be that special friend you need. Seek Him this year instead of the outward manifestations of the season. He will give life real meaning and your heart real peace, the peace that passes all understanding. ------------------- I was just searching for reference to this song when Malladi sent me the above piece.. It helps show the changes that where made from the original poem. - Nancy ------------------ This poem was written on December 25th 1864 during the American Civil War by one of America's greatest writers, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The references to this war were removed when the poem was rearranged and set to music by John Baptiste Calkin in 1872. I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth," I said; "For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!" Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead; nor doth he sleep! '--' >Church Dog Sunday mornings are a leisurely time in many households, but they certainly weren't in our Ogilvie, Minnesota home back in the late 1920s. Church services began at nine-thirty in the morning. Mother was the organist, so she had to be there early. That meant all of us kids had to be washed and dressed with our hair neatly combed by the time mother left the house. As you'd expect, there was a lot of hurrying around to make sure everyone was ready on time. That was trouble enough, but one day we had another problem on our hands - our dog, Brownie. Every morning, Brownie was let out by the first person who got up. When we called him back in, he'd usually come running right away . . . but not on this particular Sunday. We called and coaxed for as long as we could, but Brownie was simply nowhere to be found. Unable to locate our disappearing dog, we gave up in despair and headed off to church, leaving Brownie outdoors somewhere. We arrived at church and got settled in, with Mother at the organ. After some hymns and prayers, the minister began his sermon. We kids tried to sit still, just as we had been told to do, and not fidget. But as the preacher began to warm to his subject, I thought I heard something unusual. No one else seemed to hear it though. But then it came again, louder. It sounded like something was scratching at the church door. We kids all exchanged silent glances and stifled our giggles. Then the scratching sound was followed by the plaintive sound of a lonely dog howling. All the grown-ups pretended not to hear anything, leaning forward in their pews so they could hear every word of the minister's oration. But we kids knew that howl. Only one dog in the neighborhood made that sound. The wailing continued and the minister paused for a moment, furrowing his brow in frustration. He didn't want to have to compete with a howling hound, so he signaled to the usher to open the door and shoo the dog away. But the usher was not quick enough for Brownie. As soon as he opened the door, in bounded our dog with a smug look on his face! He strolled up the aisle, cool as you please, as congregation and minister looked on aghast. When Brownie got to where Mother sat at the organ, he just plopped down and sat quietly. A murmur went around the church and there were some smiles and nodding of heads. The minister, determined to ignore this unusual canine caper, resumed his sermon. The following Sunday happened to be one of those rare Sundays when we didn't go to the morning service. However, no one had informed Brownie of the change in our schedule. After we attended the evening service, we heard the story: In the morning, Brownie had made a commotion at the church door until once again he was let in. Again, he sauntered down the aisle until he reached the organist, who was about to begin playing. Brownie stood stock-still for a moment, staring at the female organist. Then, when he had determined to his satisfaction that she was definitely not Mother, he returned to the church door and made it clear that he was not interested in attending this particular service. There were many Sundays when Brownie repeated his demonstrations of religious piety and family loyalty. As you can imagine, this was quite embarrassing for Mother. There were some people who weren't all that happy to see a dog in church. And each time we got a new preacher, Mother had to explain our unusual dog to him. Since Brownie lived to be nineteen years old, quite a few preachers got used to having that little brown dog interrupt their Sunday services. Shortly after Brownie passed away, our minister came to call. After consoling us over our loss, he said, "If there is a heaven for dogs, you can be assured Brownie will be scratching at the door - and when it is opened, he will be given a place right up front with the best of them." (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them at the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. -<>- >Links for Your Enjoyment :) Animal Friends 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/animalfriends3.html You Are The Only You God Has http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/onlyyougodhas.html When Was Jesus Christ Born? http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/whenjesusborn.html The Christmas Story http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/christmasstory.html Who Is Jesus Christ? http://www.ShangralaFamilyFun.com/BibleStudy/whoisjesus.html Pink the Pig-Puppy! http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/pigpuppy.html Jesus Laughing Art http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/Jesusart.html Angel Falls http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/angelfalls.html Christmas Around The World http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/christmasworld.html God's Night Lights http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/night.html Humor In Religion 3 http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/hreligion3.html Finger Monkeys http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/monkey.html Notes To God http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/cnotes.html Maxine On Holidays http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/maxineholidays.html For Angels, Candles, Doves http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs.html For Crosses, Hearts, God, And Jesus http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_f-j.html For Nativity Scenes and New Years http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_k-o.html For Prayers, Santa, Sledding, and Snow http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_p-t.html For Words:Merry (Christmas) and Xmas (all other Christmas related) http://www.shangralafamilyfun.com/agifs_u-z.html Full Christmas Index!- https://tinyurl.com/y4xyz2w8 -<>- From TruthOrTradition:Heart Matters https://tinyurl.com/rw2aq8d Classic Christmas Music - Perfect for wrapping those last minute gifts or Christmas baking :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybhsf0GJMCE How Great Thou Art - HD - Barbershop Multitrack - YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=dxCRIF0m79w&feature=related From MommyUnderground: Helpful Tips To Survive The Holiday Season With The Loss Of A Loved One https://tinyurl.com/uruxjby -<>- >In The News: Westwing News: Nancy Pelosi is Stalling on the Impeachment Trial Because She Knows Democrats Messed Up https://www.whitehouse.gov/westwingreads/ WhiteHouseNews: America spoke. At Carnegie Hall, gospel singer Wintley Phipps delivers perhaps the most powerful rendition of Amazing Grace ever recorded. He says, "A lot of people don't realize that just about all Negro spirituals are written on the black notes of the piano. Probably the most famous on this slave scale was written by John Newton, who used to be the captain of a slave ship, and many believe he heard this melody that sounds very much like a West African sorrow chant. And it has a haunting, haunting plaintive quality to it that reaches past your arrogance, past your pride, and it speaks to that part of you that's in bondage. We feel it. It's just one of the most amazing melodies in all of human history." After sharing the noteworthy history of the song, Mr. Phipps delivers a stirring performance that brings the audience to its feet! To which the widow replied, "I know, but you see, the stamp machine doesn't ask me about my arthritis." THOUGHT: This lady wasn't concerned about speed and efficiency. She was interested in a little human contact--someone who might show her a bit of personal interest. Our communities are filled with folks just like her. May I make a suggestion? In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (NIV) Christmas has always been a time for celebration and joy for our family. However, a few years ago we were consumed by grief over our nephew who was a troubled kid. Our sadness threatened to rob the sacred holiday of the usual awe and wonder we felt. I began to pray. "Please, God, don't let us miss Christmas." It is our tradition for family and friends to join us for Christmas dinner. This year was no different. The house was full of those who had come to celebrate. Our home glittered with lights and tinsel both inside and out. The presents were sorted into piles according to the nametags that were located a top each gift and tucked slightly under the bow. Aromas of holiday foods cooking in the kitchen made our mouths water with anticipation. Outwardly, all seemed right, yet for my family, no celebration or sweet treat could comfort our hearts. Again, I prayed. "Lord, please don't let us miss Christmas." As the evening drew to a close, Cody, a friend of our son, put on his coat. "Merry Christmas," he said, waving bye with his hand high in the air. Cody had joined the Marines and was due to report after graduation. He fiddled with his jacket as if he was hesitating. "Are you excited about the Marines?" I asked. "I wish I had never joined. I'm told the only way to get out of it is not to graduate. So I'm not going to finish school," Cody said as he shuffled his feet back and forth. I sighed and began sharing with Cody what I needed to hear myself. "Peace comes in impossible situations when we rely on God and trust Him with our future, whatever that may be." Stunned, Cody asked. "In order to trust and rely on God, don't I first have to ...what's the word, ah...get saved?" "You've never placed your trust in Christ to be your personal Lord and Savior?" I asked. "No, ma'am, I haven't," Cody said, shaking his head back and forth. "Well, we can fix that right now if you'd like," I replied. My niece and I escorted Cody into a quiet room where we explained about the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Cody accepted the peace of God, and his countenance changed right in front of our faces! With excitement, Cody announced to our guests, "Guess what everybody? I just gave my heart and life to Jesus!" Cheers filled the house and the true celebration of Christmas had finally begun! It was a Christmas miracle I'll never forget. God had heard my prayer. He hadn't let us miss Christmas at all. In fact, as we looked to Christ for Cody's sake, He was birthed anew in all our hearts. Isn't that why we celebrate Christmas each year? To refocus on the One who offers hope in this fallen world and fills us with lasting peace. Hope for the hurting, the sick, and the lost. Christmas reminds us to rejoice in the truth that no matter what we face on earth, Jesus has overcome the world! Gazing on Christ helps us to see, if we have Jesus, we have everything we need. "Dear Lord, Thank You for the Savior of the world who brings peace in our hearts all year long. In Jesus' Name, Amen."
