My boss' wife suggested her painter, so we gave him a call. We were so happy with his work we used him for other painting projects. We then discovered he was not only a painter, but a contractor as well. Sharon, my wife, and I used him for everything -- from painting, to sheetrocking, to putting in lights, to building closets... You name it, David Jones could do it. Through the years, we developed a relationship with David -- not only as our "super handyman," but more importantly as our friend. Soon, he had a key to our home. We trusted him and highly recommended him to our family and friends. One day, as I was about to call David to wish him a happy birthday, our phone rang. It was David and something was wrong -- terribly wrong. David was frantic, explaining that his son Sean had been in an accident. "He and his friend were testing a motorcycle and Sean ran into a tree." The injury to his spinal cord was bad and David said "he might not make it." For a while, it was touch and go. However, miraculously, his condition changed from critical to stable. Sean was eventually transferred from his acute hospital to a rehabilitation hospital. My father taught me a long time ago, a corny but true quote: Mile by mile is a trial. Yard by yard is hard. But inch by inch is a cinch! True, Sean still has a long way to go, as he is a quadriplegic. However, I told David to look at how far he had come, as Sean was inches from death. One time I saw Sean feeling sorry for himself. I said, "Sean, you have experienced a severe loss. However, I hope in time, you will be able to look at the gains you've reached and not dwell on your losses." I visited Sean in the hospital quite often and from that day on, I only saw him with a smile and trying to achieve new gains. What about David, his father? Even though David put on a good front, he was constantly worried about Sean. Then, approximately one month after the motorcycle accident, we got another frantic phone call. David stated he did not know what to do, he was in the hospital with his wife who suffered a severe heart attack. We quickly went to the hospital, to offer any kind of help we could. Unfortunately, it was too late. Judy was in critical condition and she soon passed away. Still in a state of shock, David asked me if I could deliver his wife's eulogy. I felt very honored, and yet I was very sad. David is my painter, but more importantly, he is my friend. Anything I could do for him, I would. After the eulogy, we said some prayers. The funeral was a nice one and hopefully the eulogy honored David's wife. Now, David had suffered two huge losses -- his son's accident and his wife's death. On the surface, David tried to act like things were going okay. However, they weren't. I know it, my family knew it, and, most importantly, David knew it. He started making excuses for not showing up for work. I tried to talk to him, but in the beginning, he would not "let me in." Gradually, he did is doing better. The losses he has experienced are huge, but David is a fighter. He was "knocked down," but David will never allow himself to be "knocked out." True, David Jones is a great painter, but, more importantly, he is a great man. I feel honored to be able to call him my friend. -- Michael Segal __________________________________________________ Michael Jordan Segal is a husband, father, social worker, freelance author, and inspirational speaker. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and start to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions Things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.. The sand is everything else -- The small stuff. 'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, You will never have room for the things that are important to you. So... Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. 'Take care of the golf balls first -- The things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.' One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. 'I'm glad you asked'. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.' --- ...Such a sweet Classic! Answers called out ranged from 8oz. To 20oz. The lecturer replied, 'The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.' 'If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.' 'In each case it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.' He continued, 'And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on.' 'As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. ' 'So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work/life down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.' 'Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you've rested. Life is short. Enjoy!' And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life: 1 * Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue. 2 * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. 3 * Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. 4 * Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their Maker. 5 * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. 6 * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. 7 * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. 8 * Never buy a car you can't push. 9 * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't have a leg to stand on.. 10 * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. 11 * Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late. 12 * The second mouse gets the cheese. 13 * When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane. 14 * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. 15 * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. 16 * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. 17 * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull.. Some have weird names and all are different colors, but they all have tolive in the same box. 18 * A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. * * * * Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today ! ! ! Because of my years of service with the organization, and because I'd held another position that wasn't being eliminated, I had "bumping rights." I looked at all my options, including the job market, and all my responsibilities, including my son, then made the difficult decision to stay employed. This meant I would bump another person out of their job. Although I could narrow the list down to people who held my former position, I had no way of knowing whether they could also "bump" or if they would end up in the unemployment line. My son and I adjusted for my new income by moving in with my mother. As mental preparation, I assumed that the person whose job I would take was a hard worker, well respected and loved by co-workers. I had no idea how true those assumptions would prove. Evie, the person I bumped, is one of those people who mothers everybody and whose love is returned -- along with admiration and respect for the work she does. Evie showed her style in the way she counseled those around her to accept and assist me. She felt the changes meant that she was needed somewhere else. However, one employee was affected more than the others were. Nancy was not only Evie's partner at work; she and Evie are best friends. Nancy's personal struggle was made all the more difficult because she would be responsible to train me. And we would have to work closely even once I got a handle on the job. Nancy and I met at a kickoff event for the new school year. She sat directly across from me. We didn't speak much, but kept an eye on each other. I think the ice started to melt when she (approvingly) caught my reaction to one of the events that day. Things continued to improve over the next few weeks as we got to know one another better and talked about our thoughts and feelings. Nancy must have done a lot of thinking and praying, because over time it became clear that she had appointed herself to be my protector. Once the school year began and we were meeting with teaching staff, students and employers, Nancy made sure we presented a united front. When people seemed upset about losing Evie, Nancy told them that Evie was doing well and was obviously needed at her new job. Evie could have resented my part in forcing her to change jobs, but she accepted the shift with dignity and grace. And Nancy could have remained hurt and angry, and treated me accordingly, but instead put her feelings aside to help me. Now Nancy is not only my partner, she is my friend. I'm so lucky, because each woman's reaction was an authentic testament to her character. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From Archives InspiredBuffalo: %%%% %%%%-( _%%%%%_/ \ ' / _%%%%%%%% - (_) - _%%%%%%%/ \% / , \ %%%%%%%%%\\ \_ %%%%%% \ \\ ) /\_/ /(___. \ '----' ( / ) ---....____/ (_____ __ _ ___ ___ __ _ _ _____ _ _ ___ / )---...___ =-= = -_= -=_= _-=_-_ -=- =-_ ,' ( ```--.._= -_= -_= _-=- -_= _=- ,-' ) ``--._=-_ =-=_-= _-= _ '-._ '-..___( ``-._=_-=_- =_-= ``---....__) `-._-=_-_=- )|)| `-._=-_ gnv '-'-.\_ `-. >Pleasures The waves are'nt always gentel and water is rarely free. Let's just say that Anita and I disagreed on the subject -- good-naturedly, of course. And both of us would have rather eaten road kill than admit that the other was right. It had to do with our last-born. Don't get me wrong -- we were both excited for our fifth child to arrive nearly 10 years ago. We were thrilled that the baby would be our second son (thanks to the wonders of modern technology we knew that he was a he before he was born -- although it felt like unwrapping a Christmas present the day after Thanksgiving). And we both felt good about the name we had chosen for him. Except for one letter. That's where the controversy started. One of us (I won't say who) seemed to be suffering from the delusion that his name should be spelled "Jonathon" even though there wasn't one shred of supporting evidence to make the claim. The other proudly (and yet somehow humbly) cited the Holy Bible, Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary and "Highway to Heaven" as examples of why the name should correctly be spelled "Jonathan." So what do you think? Who was right? (I know -- easy call. But pretend it isn't so Anita won't have to feel completely humiliated.) OK, so maybe we made too big of a deal out of this. Our Jon would have been our Jon whether his name was Matthew, Mark, Luke or Jonathan -- or even (shudder!) Jonathon. As Shakespeare's Juliet said, "That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet." Still, there's something special for each of us about our name, no matter what it is or how it happens to be spelled. Take my name, for example. Since both of my grandfathers were named Joseph, it's no surprise that my parents named a son Joseph. But it is somewhat surprising that it took them four sons to finally get around to doing it. When I finally asked Dad about that, the best explanation he could come up with was, "We were saving the name for you." Which is fine except for one thing: none of my three older brothers had to live with the gnawing suspicion that someday, somewhere, they were going to have to face our ancestral Josephs and justify what they did with their name. Of course, Anita and I inflicted the same curse upon our first son. At this point, Joe doesn't seem to mind sharing his name with the Old Man. But he does seem intent upon establishing his own definition of the word, and making my name his. Which is just as it should be. Our names are labels that don't mean anything in and of themselves. They may reflect tradition and heritage, and they may give us a leg up on life -- or a leg down, as the case may be. But ultimately they are empty words until we fill them with meaning by the way we choose to live our lives. Well used, a name can open doors, establish credibility and become an instant testimonial to an honorable reputation -- "the immortal part of myself," according, once again, to Shakespeare. Poorly used, however, a name can live forever in infamy. How many Adolphs do you know? Or Judases? Any little Saddams running around your cul-de-sac? Probably not. "Who steals my purse steals trash," wrote (who else?) Shakespeare. "'Tis something, nothing; 'twas mine, 'tis his . . . But he that filches from me my good name robs me of that which not enriches him, and makes me poor indeed." No matter how it's spelled. In 1934, the Michigan Legislature created the Mackinac Straits Bridge Authority to study the feasibility of the bridge and authorized it to sell bonds for the project. Preliminary plans for the bridge featured a three-lane roadway, a railroad crossing on the under deck of the span, and a center-anchorage double-suspension bridge configuration similar to the design of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. From 1939 to 1941, a cause-way of approximately 4,000 feet in length was constructed with concrete road fragments extending from the northern shore. With uncertainty in funding and the initiation of World War II, further building was delayed. In 1950, engineers resumed construction and the state legislature authorized the sale of $85 million in construction bonds on April 30, 1952. David B. Steinman was appointed the design engineer in January 1953, and the American Bridge Division of United States Steel Corporation was awarded a contract of over $44 million to build the steel superstructure. On November 1, 1957, after two-and-a-half years of construction and the loss of five lives, the bridge finally opened to traffic. It was officially dedicated on June 25, 1958. The bridge is approxi- mately five miles long, the third longest in the United States. Forty years after the dedication, the 100-millionth crossing was celebrated. Most of us probably look at the construction of this bridge as a feat of modern engineering. True enough, it is. But behind the construction was the need: the need to connect two cultures and two land masses, to expand and improve economic prosperity by bringing people together. Did the bridge spring up immediately? No. How did it start? With a vision, a picture in the minds of visionaries of what it might resemble and how it might change the lives of all affected by its construction. When it became clear that ferries were too expensive and too inefficient to accomplish the goals of connecting the two sides, the bridge came to the forefront of everyone's mind. The old ways of transportation just were not working. Something new had to be put into place. Was it cheap? No. Was it easy to build? No. Were human lives put in danger? Yes. Was it worth the cost, the hardship, the lives lost, the requirements of years of work and commitment to make this bridge happen? For most people connected with the bridge, the answer was an overwhelming yes. THOUGHT: Like suspension bridges built across bodies of water, it takes time, money and risk for bridges of healing to be built between estranged people. Many may feel that the cost is too high to achieve the bridge. It might cost me time or pride. I might have to say I'm sorry. What if the person to whom I am trying to direct my bride laughs at me, scorns me or refuses my overture--or worse yet, just plain ignores me? Jesus said that we must count the cost of discipleship (cf. Luke 14:28). Building bridges that result in restored relationships is probably one of the most important costs of being a disciple of Jesus. Christ taught that reconciled relationships are more important to God than any offering we could bring before Him. Why? Because for God, how we treat others is synonymous with how we treat Him (cf. 1 John 4:20). (H. Norman Wright, Larry Renetzky) KneEmail: "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. (Commenting on Matthew 8:23-27) Having left everything with His Father, our Lord did the very wisest thing possible. He did just what the hour demanded. “Why,” you say, “He went to sleep!” That was the best thing Jesus could do; and sometimes it is the best thing we can do. Christ was weary and worn; and when anyone is exhausted, it is his duty to go to sleep if he can. The Saviour must be up again in the morning, preaching and working miracles, and if He does not sleep, He will not be fit for His holy duty; it is incumbent upon Him to keep Himself in trim for His service. Knowing that the time to sleep has come, the Lord sleeps, and does well in sleeping. Often, when we have been fretting and worrying, we should have glorified God far more had we literally gone to sleep. To glorify God by sleep is not so difficult as some might think; at least, to our Lord it was natural. Here you are worried, sad, wearied; the doctor prescribes for you; his medicine does you no good; but oh! If you enter into full peace with God, and go to sleep, you will wake up infinitely more refreshed than by any drug. The sleep which the Lord giveth to His beloved is balmy indeed. Seek it as Jesus sought it. Go to bed, brother, and you will better imitate your Lord than by putting yourself into ill humour, and worrying other people. --Charles Spurgeon, in his sermon “Jesuss Asleep on a Pillow” (The Timothy Report, www.timothyreport.com) --- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' ...Sleep in God's arms... Sometimes when you are thinking way too much, sleep may elude you. When this happens to me, I find that praying to God to help give me perfect restful sleep in the name of Jesus Christ works every single time. I close my eyes and feel God's arms around me and I find I drift off in the most perfect sleep. By Bob Perks I don't know why I waited. My heart was heavy when I saw the bird just standing there drenched in oil. I don't know what, if any, emotions a bird can feel, but it looked humiliated and confused. My heart heard it say, "What did I do to deserve this?" I whispered, "I'm sorry!" It was then that I asked God, "What have we done?" He gave us a perfect place to live and we turned it into our play ground thinking only of ourselves. Move the wildlife, to hell with the environment. Our needs supersede all others. We need more oil to keep up with the demand so pollution is "collateral damage." A phrase I heard once spoken about innocent civilians killed in the war. We are screaming at BP, boycotting their company for mistakes they made when in the long run, in the reality of it all, you and I are to blame. We are the reason oil companies drill. We are the reason that, even in my own backyard, gas companies are leasing beautiful, natural land and farms, so that they can pump chemicals into the ground to release gas deposits. They call this "fracking." Already water systems have been polluted, and the earth changed in ways we will one day regret. "God, what have we done?" He gave us perfection and we are stealing away its wealth. He gave us clean and we dirtied it. He gave us beautiful skies and we polluted them. He gave us wildlife and we are killing them off through over consumption and chemical mis- management. He called it creation, we call it evolution. He called it natural and we call it "collateral damage." "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1 "Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." Genesis 1:26 "God, what have we done?" "I wish you enough!" Bob Perks I encourage you to share my stories but I do ask that you keep my name and contact information with my work. I wasn't going to post this one as I am not in agreement with it, but I decided it was something I should touch on for you. I disagree with this part in particular... "We are screaming at BP, boycotting their company for mistakes they made when in the long run, in the reality of it all, you and I are to blame." I am sorry. That is just not a fare statement. Just because I want to take advantage of the wonderful things God has made available to me... List Taken From Here: http://www.ranken-energy.com/Products%20from%20Petroleum.htm You can misuse anything and the devil can use every good gift from God against us. It is a fact of life because we are sharing this world with the devil and his host. One day our Lord will take us away from this spiritual war and we shall live a life free from hurt and pain. Until then, it is our obligation to put the blame where it belongs - in the hand of the devil like our Lord taught us to do (Luke 23:34) and do the best we can to be good overseers of what God has given us like the Word teaches us. EACH of us shall be held accountable to God for our bad doings. (Matt. 12:36, Rom.14:12) It was told on the news today that someone had the bells and whistles of this BP Oil rig alarm system turned to mute so people could sleep if a problem came up. Well it did and people lost their lives and all kinds of environmental problems have occurred. THESE people in charge who were to overseer this are therefore responsible to God for their actions or lack of actions. I am sure the devil as our adversary capitalized on their lack of good judgment. It is not for us to take blame for their actions just because we use the product that God has given us to bless us. These people have our Lord and Savior for that. Jesus Christ died so that all may live - even those who make very bad judgments in this life and hurt and kill many. Check out this teaching here...
