It was a job that I really enjoyed because there was a lot of diversity -- filling in for staff, meeting with physicians to help promote programs for their patients, ordering new equipment, and general day to day problem solving. I was a jack of all trades, as most nurses are. However, I was soon to have one extra job on my agenda that particular day, which was above and beyond any nurses's imagination. The day started out like any other. When I got to the office there was the usual routine of assuring that the doctors' schedules had been posted and that there was sufficient staff to work with each one. Our medical clinic shared space with the oncology outpatients from our hospital and there was sometimes a squeeze for exam rooms. On this particular day, I was faced with more than exam room issues. I noticed some unusual paraphernalia in the halls that resembled television cameras. As I was walking through this maze of equipment, I was stopped by the oncology nurse manager who said she had an urgent request. After settling the patient I was attending to, I went back to see what she wanted. She informed me that the hospital was filming a public service commercial to let everyone know about our outstanding oncology program. They decided that it would be easier if they shot the commercial at the clinic, rather than the hospital. I said, "Well, I guess we will do our best to work around this and still be able to promote patient safety." Besides, we did have an unusually light schedule that day. Then she told me that the nurse who was originally slated to be part of the production had backed out at the last minute. She asked me if I would be kind enough to STAR as the nurse in the commercial. I don't quite remember my initial reaction, but I must have been dumbfounded! I was in our church drama group, but filming a commercial for national television was beyond my acting ability. I was quickly assured by the director of this production that my lines would be very few, and that unlike my live drama performances, we could easily do retakes. Duty called! How could I say no? I suddenly realized what I had done. What did I look like today? Had I known I was being filmed I would have had my hair done or worn my best uniform. Oh well, I guess they would just get the real me. After my initial shock subsided, I was introduced to a lovely lady who was a cancer survivor -- the real star of the show. We were told our lines, and introduced to the lights, cameras, and action. It was quite an exciting experience and an honor once the ball got rolling. As the normal work hours started to wind down, a few more members of the staff were recruited for scenes that required hallway activity. It was a long day for just a 60-second commercial, but during the down time I was able to engage in conversation with this patient and her family. They were a tremendously fun group. It wasn't long before the commercial started to appear on television. It was great fun when I ran into a friend, who said she had been getting ready for work when she heard a familiar voice coming from her television. She couldn't believe who she saw when she looked at the screen. Or when my sister told me that my niece from California phoned her and said she saw a nurse on a commercial that looked and sounded just like her aunt. No, I never received fame or fortune, but did have an experience I will never forget. You just never know what may suddenly happen to you during an otherwise ordinary day. -- Annettee Budzban ___________________________________________ Annettee is a mother and grandmother and lives in Wildwood, Illinois. (By Kelly McFadden) "As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him" - Psalm 103:13 (NIV) "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" - Matthew 7:11 (NIV) Two years ago, my best friend's father unexpectedly passed away. I'll never forget the phone call I received that day. It was frantic and panicked, scared and distressed. The next few weeks became a journey traveling the road of loss with close friends. The most difficult part was hearing my friend expressing her wish to have another opportunity to make sure her dad knew how much she loved and appreciated him. This prompted my sister and I to sit together, brainstorm, and make a list for our dad of reasons not only why we appreciated him, but also memories from growing up. We typed it out and took the big guy to dinner where we shared everything we loved, respected and valued about him. We laughed through memories of times we played catch or had gone fishing. We reflected on bedtime prayers and the way our dad had demonstrated the value in serving and giving to others. We cried again about the cancer he had faced years before and told him how much we admired the way he found his strength in the Lord. The buzz words we typed on the page brought up an abundant supply of stories and memories that kept us talking and sharing for hours. Looking back on this wonderful time with my dad, I can't help but feel slightly convicted. For when have I shared this kind of a moment with my Heavenly Father? Maybe you are like me and your prayers often reflect more of what you want and less of how wonderful God is; or more of what you need and less of how thankful you are for what you have. We have a Father in Heaven who loves us unconditionally and gives us wonderful gifts. He cares for our pains, trials, and triumphs. He tells us not to worry and takes care of our needs. He longs to hear from you, His child. There is no doubt in my mind that my dad knows how much my sister and I love him. On Father's Day make sure your father knows how much you care through a phone call, a letter or an invitation to walk down memory lane. Some of you may not have a pleasant memory of your father or you might not have any memories at all. This may be the time to start down the road to forgiveness or reconciliation, or it may be a chance to thank others in your life that have offered fatherly wisdom to you along the way. More importantly, don't miss your chance to do the very same thing for your Father in Heaven who loved you so much He sent his only begotten Son to die for you. --- ...Great advice! "Why, may I ask did you make me this way?" "What way is that? What are you trying to say" "My body, Dear Lord, My face, it's too square" They are the wrong color, My eyes and my hair. My hips are too wide, My belly too round. When I look at my feet, I can't see the ground. My thighs are so thick, My feet, they stick out. My fingers my toes they are as big as a trout. My eyes are too close, they're in the wrong place. I'm loud sometimes, and bossy to boot, Sometimes I wish I was just born a mute. The Lord, he just chuckled, as if it was funny, "Dear Child, you will learn, that's more than plenty." You're hair and your eyes, those things don't matter. It's the size of your heart, and not if you get fatter. You have the gifts that I've given to you. To cheer up your friends when they're feeling blue. You make people laugh and forget all their sorrows. Those are the things that make more tomorrows. Your children and family, I put in your care. Those are the reasons I put you there. You're smart and you're witty, people love you. Why can't you seem to love yourself too? I thought a minute not sure what to say, Then into my mind popped events of the day. "They laugh at me, you know, people who see me" they think it's funny, but it hurts, can't they see? I've tried everything, to be as they say small and thin, in a petite way. The Lord looked at me, with a curious grin. He said with a smirk "Who said thin was in?" I made you perfect the way that you are. Those magazines and models, they take it too far. I made you bigger, because that's who you are. There's nothing small about you my child. You are too grande to fit those things they call in. To say you are grande is still putting it mild. You have a big heart, so full of love. You have deep emotions, no one can deny. You do things largely, everything with pride, your thoughts, your ideas, even the tears you cry. I made you big. That is a fact. I made you like me. Don't forget that. You are too special to define and even harder to confine. ~ Author Unknown --- ...My two cents... __ ,_ : \ ; L_; ;. `.' ` ` \ ,' ; ; ", | .-' * | $ _ ;_ \ ; _.-' ) `+* .' -') [bug] .`._.-' / ,( .- : _.: ; -'.' `, /\--*" \/ .' ; ; / \ /-.-'"*. / \ ;__.-*"\.--*" ;:_..-+' \\ : _.-' ; \\ *.___.-' : .-\\ \ | : ;.-. \-*""*. ; : : ; ; _.-*" ; / Y: : '" ,___.-' Y' __...___.-*" `"' I asked God about this 'being fat' and the answer that I got back is that 'it is for protection'. Which made me wonder. So many speak of being over weight as being 'at risk health wise'. Often folks look down on bigger people like they are forever shoving food in their face or something. But I know many who it is just the way their body wants to be. Like some skinny people have to eat all day long to not be too skinny, some fat people have to not eat much at all to keep from being overly fat. Just different body types. So what is this 'protection' thing that God was telling me? I learned about that later as I began seeing people I knew and loved being hit by horrible cancer or other sicknesses. I saw my once large friends suffer through it and loose 50 or more pounds and achieve the ultimate goal of being cancer free or back to being healthy again and gaining their weight back. I also watched with great sadness my normal to thin friends loose their fight with sickness and turning into skeletal shells of their former selves and then having to go to their funeral. I now understood what God was saying to me. If you get really sick, you need the added protection of the extra weight to have it to loose. If a skinny person looses 50-100 pounds then they are done for, but a large person can do so and still recover from their sickness. So unless the person is horribly obese, if they are in shape, I don't see a problem. The main problem is that society makes the person feel like they are not as good as every one else simply because their body is bigger then what is considered a normal sized person. Our society just started with the 'Twiggy' idea of beauty in the late 60's. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0493341/bio Before that many beautiful people were not so bony. Many successful executives can remember the time their father failed to give affirmation to them as a child. The result was either over achievement to prove their worth, or under achievement to prove he was right. Many a wife had lost her ability to love because of a critical husband. Many a husband has left a marriage because of words of disrespect and ungratefulness. Stories abound regarding the power of words. There are just as many stories of those who have been encouraged, challenged, and comforted with words that made a difference in their lives. Jesus knew the power of words. He used parables to convey His principles of the Kingdom of God. He used words of forgiveness and mercy. He used words to challenge. He used words to inspire His disciples to miraculous faith. Do your words give life? Do they inspire and challenge others to greatness? Who does God want you to encourage through your words today? Affirm someone close to you today. - Today God Is First by Os Hillman; --- ...Rom.14: [19] Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. ========================================================== ,-----. I noticed an elderly gentleman with a small dog climb into his pickup truck and leave. Moments later an elderly woman approached the parking space with a confused expression. I asked if she was looking for the man in the white pickup. She confirmed and I explained I'd watched him drive onto the highway. It was her husband; she asked to use my cell phone. When she dialed his number his phone rang in her purse; she was unable to call him. For nearly an hour, I and several truck drivers patiently waited with her. Quite a crowd gathered. At times, she appeared angry and frustrated, other times more confused and worried. Finally, a truck driver and wife escorted her to their rig for coffee, while he used his CB to notify other drivers to be on the lookout. Then I saw the white truck pull back into the same parking spot. A frantic elderly man jumped out. I let him know where his wife was. I let his wife know her husband had returned. They both hurriedly approached each other from across the lot until only a few steps apart. Suddenly, they both stopped and just looked at each other. The standoff lasted several seconds, neither uttering a word. Then the man began to weep. He ran to her arms and sobbed uncontrollably. After several attempts of his unintelligible attempts at speech, she gently took her husband's cheeks into her hands, forcing him to look into her eyes. Over and over she said, "It's OK." I looked around through my blurring eyes to see numerous tears flowing in the nearby crowd. After a few moments of tears and hugging, he regained enough composure to explain he'd realized his error within seconds of merging onto the highway. However, there was no safe place to turn around on the divided highway until the next exit, 12 miles away. Needing to backtrack again, he'd driven 48 miles to return. The wife is the real hero in this story. When the couple both first saw each other, she had every right to unleash her anger for being forgotten. She had every right to chastise, and belittle until her heart was content. Most people would have vented anger on first seeing the perpetrator. But at that moment, even though she had every "right" to lash out, she hesitated. By delaying her tirade, she transformed a situation of anger and bitterness into one of unforgettable mercy and kindness. Even though only observers, those of us who witnessed this event were graced by her demonstration of forgiveness and genuine love. To this day, whenever I feel slighted and ready to lash out, I think of this experience and hesitate. Just because I have every right to be angry, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best choice. =======HeroicStories======= >-->From LaughAndLift: "When we speak about wisdom, we are speaking about Christ. In it, a seven-year-old first baseman, Tanner Munsey, fielded a ground ball and tried to tag a runner going from first to second base. The umpire, Laura Benson, called the runner out, but young Tanner immediately ran to her side and said, "Ma'am, I didn't tag the runner." Umpire Benson reversed herself, sent the runner to second base, and Tanner's coach gave him the game ball for his honesty. Two weeks later, Laura Benson was again the umpire and Tanner was playing shortstop when a similar play occurred. This time Benson ruled that Tanner had missed the tag on a runner going to third base, and she called the runner safe. Tanner looked at Benson and without saying a word, tossed the ball to the catcher and returned to his position. Benson sensed something was wrong. "Did you tag the runner?" She asked Tanner. His reply: "Yes." Benson then called the runner out. The opposing coaches protested until she explained what had happened two weeks earlier. "If a kid is that honest," she said, "I have to give it to him." --- It may be that no Christian characteristic has suffered more in our society than honesty. It's lacking in the workplace, it's lacking in many of our marriages, it's lacking in our government, and sometimes it's even lacking in our churches. Like Diogenes of ancient Greece, we sometimes feel the urge to take our lantern and begin our search for an honest man. There is something about Christians that should stand out like a neon sign on a dark night. Jesus wants his people to be known as a people of truth. We should establish a reputation, like Tanner, for speaking the truth even when it would benefit us to do otherwise. Then, and only then, will those around us trust what we say without hesitation, without wondering whether we really mean what we say or not. "Therefore, putting away lying, each one speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another." (Ephesians 4:25). May God help you to be that person of truth that Diogenes was looking for (and God still is, too). Breann was spending the night with Zelma. She said, "Grandma, my dream is to be a fashion model when I grow up... There is one problem. I will have to get fake teeth because my teeth aren't as white as the models on TV." Anne heard this from her niece, Beth Jackson, about Trey, 3, who said, "I want to marry you, Mom." She told him that he can't marry her, he has to pick another girl. He replied, "Well, I do have a girlfriend but we can't get married because we can't drive yet." - Anne Streit of Cherry Valley, Illinois Zach was in Walmart with his mom and sister, Cali looking at the car radios. She is extremely talkative and bright, and Donna loves to go to work because she is such a joy. Recently she said, "Donna? Do you think I'd be able to split my toothbrush in half?" Donna said, "Well, Honey, I don't think so. The plastic handle is very hard material, and I don't think your muscles are quite strong enough to snap it in half. Why would you want to do that, anyway?" Her totally serious answer was, "I just wanted to share it with one of my friends." - Donna Henry, RN, of Medway, Massachusetts Stella, 3, lives with her mom, Nana and Grandma. Grandpa passed away last month after being ill for some time. Stella was very close to him and is trying to understand why he can't be with them anymore. Each person she asked about Grandpa being gone gave her a little different answer than the one before. Her cousin told her that Grandpa was now an angel living in heaven. When Stella saw Grandpa in his casket, she turned and said, "Grandpa can't be an angel; he doesn't have wings!" - Suzy Payne (Nana) of Springfield, Oregon Here are more stories from Suzy. During Stella's first thunderstorm, Nana told her that it was the angels playing their drums. She has always told them to be a little quieter because they are too noisy. Nana told her that Grandpa was now with them and he would be playing the drums too. Stella said, "Good! He knows they are too noisy and he'll make them be more quiet!" Stella asked her mom why they didn't need to water their flowers any more. Mom told her that they were being watered by the angels. After Grandpa passed away, her mom told her that Grandpa was now helping to water the flowers. To which Stella said, "No he's not! He never waters the flowers!" ___-------___ _-~~ ~~-_ _-~ /~-_ /^\__/^\ /~ \ / \ /| O|| O| / \_______________/ \ | |___||__| / / \ \ | \ / / \ \ | (_______) /______/ \_________ \ | / / \ / \ \ \^\\ \ / \ / \ || \______________/ _-_ //\__// \ ||------_-~~-_ ------------- \ --/~ ~\ || __/ ~-----||====/~ |==================| |/~~~~~ (_(__/ ./ / \_\ \. When Mom and Nana were putting together a car that Stella got for her birthday, Mom was having a hard time getting a screw into a tight spot and keeping it there while trying to screw it in. Stella said, "I'll just go get a hammer and take care of it!" Lily, 4, had gone to the pet store with her dad, Chris. When her mother got home Chris told Lily to tell Mom what she saw at the pet store. Lily said, "We saw this huge fish, Mom. Now I'm not saying it looked like Dad, but it was big!" - Linda Stewart (grandmother of Lily and Tucker) of Otto, North Carolina Another time Lily's father took her to a pottery store. There was a sign outside that read "Do not touch." Lily was walking behind her dad when he turned just in time to see her put her hand out to touch something. He ran back to her and said, "Lily, did you not see that sign outside that says '~Do not touch'?" Life can pull at your heartstrings and play with your mind... Life can be blissful and happy and free... Life can put beauty in the things that you see ... Life can place challenges right at your feet... Life can make good of the hardships we meet... Life can overwhelm you and make your head spin... Life can reward those determined to win... Life can be hurtful and not always fair... Life can surround you with people who care ... Life clearly does offer its ups and its downs... Life's days can bring you both smiles and frowns... Life teaches us to take the good with the bad... Life is a mixture of happy and sad... SO... Take the life that you have and give it your best... Think positive be happy let God do the rest... Take the challenges that life has laid at your feet... Take pride and be thankful for each one you meet... To yourself give forgiveness if you stumble and fall... Take each day that is dealt you and give it your all... Take the love that you're given and return it with care... Have faith that when needed it will always be there... Take time to find the beauty in the things that you see... Take life's simple pleasures let them set your heart free... The idea here is simply to even the score...
