The power of the Lord was with them, and a large number of these Gentiles believed and turned to the Lord. When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord. Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord."1 I am sure we have all been given a nickname at one time or another. Many times, these names have to do with a characteristic that we display. This was the case with Barnabas whom we see in today’s passage. At birth, his name was Joseph, but the apostles called him Barnabas, which literally means “Son of encouragement". What an amazing man he must have been for others to detect this evident gift that he possessed. Barnabas not only possessed this gift, but he put it to good use. We see him throughout Paul’s ministry going from one place to another encouraging others to keep going, giving hope where needed, and always trying to see the best in others. There is something about praise and encouragement that, although we may find hard to believe or accept, never leaves our hearts or minds. I speak from experience when I say that we could all use a Barnabas in our lives, but sometimes in order to have a Barnabas, we first need to be a Barnabas. Today I want to encourage you to be an encourager. To be one of those people who encourage others on to greater things in the kingdom of God. The Duke of Wellington, a famous military leader who defeated Napoleon was asked at the end of his life if he had any regrets. He said that if he had a regret it was that he did not give more praise. Someone once said, “flatter me and I may not believe you, criticize me and I may not like you, ignore me and I may not forgive you, praise me and I will not forget you." This should definitely be a goal for all of us this year. Find ways to daily encourage others to stay true to the Lord, to keep moving forward, to see their strengths instead of weaknesses, and in so doing that they may also be an encourager to others. Suggested prayer: “Dear Heavenly Father, help me be like Barnabas. Life is so hard as it is, and many people struggle on a daily basis just to find the hope they need to keep going. I pray that you would lead me and give me the words to be an encourager to everyone I meet. I also pray that at times when I need encouragement, that you would also allow me to surround myself with “Barnabas’" who will motivate me to stay true to You. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus Christ’s name, amen." 1. Acts 11:19-24 (NLT). <:))))>< .---. .---. ,';' `.';' `.. f :Bo. ` d88: `\ /d88P' `\ ; /d888P' `. I read that if we were to put the entire world's knowledge from the beginning of time until 1845 on a graph it would measure only 1 inch tall. From 1845 to 1945--just 100 years--the graph would measure 3 inches tall. But from 1945 until today the graph would be as tall as or even taller than the Washington monument. Change, rapid change--some for good and some for bad--has become the order of the day. They say that today's average worker will need to be retrained at least three times during his working career to keep up with all the changes. Changes in technology, our manner of living, relationships, beliefs, philosophy, morals, and so on are happening so fast it is difficult to keep up with it all. It can leave us reeling and stressed to the max. And while we have learned how to put a man on the moon and talk to him while he is there, we hardly know how to communicate to one another in a meaningful manner when we are in the same room! Much of our modern education (with access to almost unlimited knowledge) has taught us how to make a living but has failed miserably in teaching us how to live. And without an anchor for the soul we can be left floating on a restless changing sea of uncertainty and insecurity. But for those who have faith in God, of this one thing we can be absolutely sure: God changes not! His love is from everlasting to everlasting and he is still in control of the world and universe no matter what. "Suggested prayer: "Dear God, thank you for your faithfulness and unchanging nature. Help me to trust in you no matter what, knowing that you are in control and hold the world in your hands. Please hold my life in your hands, too, as I yield the control of it to you. Gratefully in Jesus Christ's name. Amen." 1. He then noticed There was a jackass lying dead in the middle of his Front lawn..He promptly called the US House of Representatives for assistance. The conversation went Like this: "Good morning. This is speaker Pelosi. How might I help you?" "And the best of the day te yerself. This is Father O'Malley at St.Brigid's. There's a jackass Lying dead in me front lawn. Would ye be so kind as to Send a couple o' yer lads to take care of the matter?" Speaker Pelosi, considering herself to be quite a wit, Replied with a smirk, "Well now father, it was always my Impression that you people took care of last rites!" There was dead silence on the line for a long moment. Father O'Malley then replied: "Aye, that's certainly true, But we are also obliged to first notify the next of kin." -<>- _____ / \/_ //\__(\_\ |\ ^ ^ | .//_O \O_ \ \_ (_) / \ \_/ / __/\ /\__ / \ \ / / \ / \/\/\/ \ / | . | \ / | . | \ JRO >A Formula For A Successful Life I have a friend who prepares taxes. He lamented with me once about some of his wealthier clients - those with six and seven figure incomes. Some of these people, he said, even despite the obvious tax benefits, refused to give any of their money away. Some are spending more money on grooming their pets than on feeding hungry children. They simply have not discovered the importance and power of giving. And sadly, these wealthier clients are in a position to do something significant, but they choose to do nothing at all. Author Kent Nerburn wrote a book titled LETTERS TO MY SON: A Father's Wisdom on Manhood, Life, and Love. In one letter, he teaches his son the value of generosity: "Remember to be gentle with yourself and others. We are all children of chance, and none can say why some fields will blossom and others lay brown beneath the August sun. Care for those around you. Look past your differences. Their dreams are no less than yours, their choices in life no more easily made. And give. Give in any way that you can, of whatever you possess. To give is to love. To withhold is to wither. Care less for your harvest than how it is shared, and your life will have meaning and your heart will have peace." How fortunate for one boy that his father is showing him how to truly live! People who live well are experts at giving. They give their money; they give their time. They share their wisdom and their skills. They quickly say yes when asked to help. For them, the formula is simple: to give is to love and to love is to live. It's a formula for a successful life. ~ Steve Goodier ~ -<>- / / .' / .' / ______. .' / / __/_// ' / / / c c / \ G > _.-' / \/. - _.-' / .---\ / --. _.-' / / \( \ _.-' / / \ \ (. ) ' / / /\ \ / / \ | \ \ __..--'' / .' \_\ ) )\\ __..--'' / .' ) \ | / \ -'' / .' _ '///` ( /\ \ /.' _.-' __ / ) ) ) '.-'..--'' / ,' / / .__---------- /__./ / / --------------------a:f ``--.. __// / ) / / _J) /)`-\ `-__/-' ` \\ |( `\ \ -..__ `--' ``--..__ ``-- >The Echo [edited] You hear so much about memories at this time of year. From Thanksgiving Day on we are bombarded with the idea that we are not only making memories but somehow building upon them. It is the sites, sounds and smells of the holidays that trigger vivid flashbacks for me. The turkey taking center stage, the cranberries and sweet potatoes all make me think of mom. The first Christmas bell, carol, or even laughter I hear, readies my mind for a long journey home and the loving sounds only family can provide. But, oh how a whiff of chocolate, peanut butter cookies or pumpkin pie can set my soul a dancin' down memory lane! It's easy for me to venture back to things I hold close to my heart. It takes very little to find myself remembering people, places and things which somehow mixed in with the very essence of who I am today. I swear if they checked my DNA, they'd come up with elements of chocolate chip cookie mixed with genetic traits of dancing when the spirit moved me and smiling when I hear my wife's voice. Memories are as much a part of who I am as today's choices become a part of all I will become. But what about this new years eve thing? Just below the sound of horns tooting and bubbly bubbling, lies the stark reality of the passing of another year. Many struggle with all they wanted to do and didn't. Some struggle with all they think they can never accomplish and still others bask in the glow of success beyond measure. For the first time in my 57 new year celebrations I have discovered the real truth about time. "The Echo." If I take away all the fond, sweet feelings of the past and remove the element of regret from things I wanted to do right or things I did wrong, I am left with the facts. Everything I do this year will be reflected in how I see my life on new years eve that year. Thus, my theory of "The Echo." If you stand in a canyon and shout, "Hello!" "Hello" comes back to you. You can't yell, "How are you?" and get a reply, "Fine. Thanks for asking!" The year is like a canyon. You stand on the edge on new years eve and what you put into it will come back to you. The more you put in, the more will come back. If you love more, you will get more love back. If you fear more, more fear will come back. So, this new years eve when you find yourself reflecting on the year remember, it has nothing at all to do with memories. It's "The Echo." What will you get back next year? I was speaking to a small group recently, sharing my thoughts and ideas for the new year. I went on to urge everyone to look for the opportunity to see life in the details. "For having spent this time together today, we are now a little bit more than we were yesterday," I concluded. "You are now a part of me wherever I go." As it happens after every talk I share, people come up to offer their kind words, general comments and ask a few questions. From experience, I know that some will be brief and some, well they will dominate the little time I have until the next speaker takes the podium. I will make every attempt to speak to each person waiting even if I must take them out to the hallway in order to permit the meeting to go on. Eye contact is key. I don't pretend to listen, I try to "see what they are saying." At times I will also use my eyes to indicate that we need to wrap up so I can greet the next person. I look away and past the person speaking with me a few times. I make eye contact with the people still patiently waiting and if necessary, I will hand signal an individual I see edging away, giving up the wait. "Don't go!" I tell them. "I do want to speak with you!" is my last effort to politely end a conversation. Keeping a promise I made to myself, I did speak with about a dozen people that day. As I was gathering my notes and adjusting my tie, I heard someone say, "It's also what you didn't see." I looked around and saw no one. Shrugging it off, I continued my effort to collect myself. I picked up my belongings and turned quickly, nearly running into a man standing directly behind me. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were there, my friend," I said. "I didn't mean to startle you," he said. "I heard your talk." "Oh, thanks for being there." "It's also what you didn't see," he said. Not having any idea what that meant, I looked over my glasses and paused for a second before asking, "What didn't I see?" "You said, "You are a total summation of everything you believe and see in the world," he explained. "Yes, I did." "I believe it's more about what you don't see." I shook my head affirming the notion and asked him to explain. "Yes, it's easy to say that we need to see life in the details, but we must also learn what to look for." He was right. "So, we are what we choose to see," I said. "Your job is to teach us what to look for," he added. He then shook my hand, placed his hand on my shoulder, smiled and walked away. I sat down and thought about what he said. It's easy to see the light but we need to value the darkness, too. There you will find the lost and lonely who are always left behind. Anyone can find a rose in a field of dandelions, praise its beauty and bathe in its perfume but who will see the value in what appears to be weeds? We can celebrate the first one to cross the finish line, but who will see the magnificent effort of the one who finished last? You can stand in awe of the master architects who built the Taj Mahal but who is moved by the maintenance workers who clean and shine it daily? You can climb to the top of a mountain and pound your chest for having accomplished the feat. But who sees the miracle in the creation of both you and the mountain? Yes, you are a total summation of all you believe, all you choose to see and all you don't. Maybe God really gives us just one day to live, but many chances to see it differently. Beautiful story. I arrived in my cab at the address and honked the horn. After waiting a few minutes I honked again. Since this was going to be my last ride of my shift I thought about just driving away, but instead I put the car in park and walked up to the door and knocked. 'Just a minute', answered a frail, elderly voice. I could hear something being dragged across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 90's stood before me. She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940's movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase. The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. All the furniture was covered with sheets. There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware. 'Would you carry my bag out to the car?' she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman. She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb. She kept thanking me for my kindness. 'It's nothing', I told her. 'I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.' 'Oh, you're such a good boy, she said. When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, 'Could you drive through downtown?' 'It's not the shortest way,' I answered quickly.. 'Oh, I don't mind,' she said. 'I'm in no hurry. I'm on my way to a hospice. I looked in the rear-view mirror. Her eyes were glistening. 'I don't have any family left,' she continued in a soft voice. 'The doctor says I don't have very long.' I quietly reached over and shut off the meter. 'What route would you like me to take?' I asked. For the next two hours, we drove through the city. She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator. We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she'd ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying nothing. As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, 'I'm tired. Let's go now'. We drove in silence to the address she had given me. It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico. Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. They must have been expecting her. I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. The woman was already seated in a wheelchair. 'How much do I owe you?' She asked, reaching into her purse. 'Nothing,' I said 'You have to make a living,' she answered. 'There are other passengers,' I responded. Almost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug. She held onto me tightly. 'You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,' she said. 'Thank you.' I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light. Behind me, a door shut. It was the sound of the closing of a life. I didn't pick up any more passengers that shift. I drove aimlessly lost in thought. For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had refused to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away? On a quick review, I don't think that I have done anything more important in my life. We're conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments. But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one. PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT~THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL. At the bottom of this great story was a request to forward this - I deleted that request because if you have read to this point, you won't have to be asked to pass it along you just will... Thank you, my friend... Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance. --- ...Aww, a heartwarming classic. When you are at your saddest or experiencing your most horrible day - Stop. Look around you. You will notice that the birds have not all stopped singing, the sky is still blue, the wind gently blows and the sun has not ceased to shine. Life Goes On. You might as well join in and live it the best you can! You only have ONE life to live and to give to God. Do your best because life doesn't care if you do or you don't. Life Goes On - with or without you. Only God cares. Will you be unashamed that you did your best and lived your life to the fullest for Him or will you bow your head in shame that you gave up the precious time He had given you to do amazing things all to His Glory? 2 Cor.4: [15] For all things are for your sakes, that the abundant grace might through the thanksgiving of many redound to the glory of God. 1 Cor.10: [31] Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. If you give up, mope or want to revel in yourself and have a pity party about how sad and bad things are for you, you are not doing anyone any good. Not God, Not Jesus And Especially not yourself. Remember, negatives are beliefs just as positives are. Being negative is just believing negatively. Instead of getting positive results, your believing will give you more negative results. You hurt yourself by being negative. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' Check out these teachings: The Law Of Believing http://www.absolutebiblestudy.com/Believing/Believing.htm , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' I often remember what Jesus had said we should do... John 14: [13] And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Jesus wanted us to end our petitions of prayers by using His name so that He (Jesus) could fulfill our requests so that HE (Jesus through His answering our prayers) could Glorify God. Well, here, we have God saying He will be glorified by US confessing (truthfully proclaiming) that Jesus Christ is Lord. So we can, like Jesus Christ, glorify God the Father. Phil.2: [11] And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Isn't that sweet? :) ========================================================== >-->From LaughAndLift: Feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death. , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' >Perfect and Complete (By Bayless Conley) Your faith in God has incredible potential to make your life complete. To take you from the place of deficiency, to the place of being perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James puts it this way in James 1:2-4: "My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." Faith in God can make you complete, but your faith will be contested. It will be opposed, even as we read here. Your faith will go through the fire of trial. If you lack spiritually in your life, you can get to the place of holiness. If you are lacking materially, you can get to a place where your needs are met. Whatever your lack, your faith in God has the potential to take you from where you are, and where you are lacking, to this place that the Bible speaks of...being perfect and complete, lacking nothing. But, the path to that completeness is one of trial. Your faith will not get you there until it first goes through testing. You do have an adversary. You will be opposed. The Bible says, Your adversary, the devil, walks about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. The devil knows what is at stake, and he will do all he can to keep you from trusting God. So as your faith encounters the turbulence of trials, do what James says, and count it all joy. You are on your way to becoming perfect and complete in Christ. --- , , /////| ///// | ///// | |~~~| | | |===| |/| | B |/| | | I | | | | B | | | | L | / | E | / |===|/ jgs '---' ...See these inspiring teachings... He had worked in a shoe factory and was working in a grocery store when his brother-in-law said, "Cookie, why don't you work with me in my barber shop?" So, off to barber school he went, for two weeks or so, and came back with his license. After just a couple of years together, his brother-in-law suddenly dropped dead, and the local landmark known as "Cookie's Barber Shop" was launched. That I knew, but this part I didn't know until this week. During the great depression jobs were extremely hard to find and my grandfather kept an area in the back of his barber shop for the shoe shine boys. Young men could shine shoes and Cookie would pay them a quarter a day (the price of a full-blown haircut back then) to sweep out his shop at the end of the day. By doing that many young men made some money until they could get a good job. In the early 1970's, my grandfather got his final promotion and went home to be with God at the ripe old age of 85. I didn't get to attend his funeral which is why I didn't know this story until this week. You see, at his funeral there was a row of chairs taken up by some wonderful men who had once been shoe shine boys in Cookie's barber shop. Quite a tribute to a wonderful Christian man who never completed the third grade. It is also quite a challenge to us that are still here. Degrees and titles mean nothing in the end. Yet, the simple love of Christ, demonstrated and lived - even by an "accidental barber" in a barbershop - can produce fruit that lasts for all eternity. A simple faith, loving Jesus, loving others....that's what matters. SUBSCRIBE INFO Want to receive a Christian inspirational item AND great clean humor in an email to you each day of the week?
