>Finding Your Seat
Returning to her seat after visiting the restroom, the woman asked a
man at the end of the row, "Pardon me, but did I step on your foot
before?"
Expecting an apology, the man said, "It so happens you did."
The woman nodded. "Good. Then this is my row."

>Late for Work
Being the office supervisor, I had to have a word with a new employee
who never arrived at work on time. I explained that her tardiness was
unacceptable and that other employees had noticed that she was walking
in late every day.
After listening to my complaints, she agreed that this was a problem
and even offered a solution. "Is there another door I could use?"
-<>-
>School Health Office
While I waited in our high school health office, I overheard another
student explain to the nurse how badly his eyes hurt. "My head is
spinning," he moaned. "and I can't see straight."
After listening to his ailments for ten minutes, even the often
skeptical nurse was convinced. "I am calling your mother to come pick
you up," she said, dialing the telephone.
"Oh that won't be necessary." the student instantly replied. "I can
drive myself home."

>Soup
My four-year-old grandson stood on a chair by the kitchen counter,
watching me throw bones into a pot as I de-boned a turkey.
"Why are you putting the bones in the pot, Grandma?" he asked.
"I'm going to make soup," I replied.
He thought awhile, then asked, "Do I like bone soup?"

>Speech Therapy
My grandfather had a stroke a few years ago, and since then he hasn't
been able to speak much.
Hospitalized after a recent heart attack, he was visited by his speech
therapist. As if talking to a child, she said, "All right, I'm going to
put three items in different places in the room, and I want you to tell
me where I put them."
My grandfather answered, "The pen is on the table, the book is on the
bed and the glass is on the nightstand."
"Very good!" said the therapist in the same patronizing tone. "I'll be
back to see you again in two days."
As she reached the door, my grandfather added, "And your keys are on
the window ledge."

>Veteran's Day (Serious, Not Humor) [edited]
This wasn't sent to me by another person or list. It's just a few
thoughts about a holiday which is special to me. It's one of those few
times when I share something serious instead of humorous.
In the United States, the Veterans Day holiday is celebrated Monday,
November 11th (this is also Remembrance Day in Canada). In the early
1970's, Veterans Day became a "movable" holiday -- the fourth Monday of
October. In 1978, at the urging of Veterans groups who realized the
sanctity of the date, Congress returned Veterans Day to November 11th
(if on a weekend, it moves to the closest Friday or Monday). Please
remember that this day is not to honor war, but rather to honor the
sacrifice made by others for our freedom.
What we call Veterans Day is the anniversary of the signing of the
Armistice in the Forest of Campiegne by the Allies and the Germans in
1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). This signified
the end of World War I and was originally known as Armistice Day.
President Woodrow Wilson signed the Congressional Resolution on Nov.
11, 1919, the first Armistice Day.
However, after World War II, the day began to lose meaning and since
there were many other veterans to consider, the decision was made to
change November 11th to honor all those who fought in American wars.
The United States Congress passed an act to change the name to Veterans
Day and in 1954 President Dwight Eisenhower signed the act.
With that in mind, I would like to say "thank you" to all the men and
women with whom I served, and to especially remember those who aren't
with us anymore. As a former Hospital Corpsman, I wish a heartfelt
"Semper Fi" to all my Marine friends.
- Tom Ellsworth

>Note: In previous years, my Veterans Day piece has dealt with
various topics...
In 2004 it was the Tomb of the Unknowns
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2004.htm
at Arlington National Cemetery.
In 2003 and 2005 it was What is a Veteran?,
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2005.htm
attributed to a Marine Corps Chaplain (Reverend Denis O'Brien).
In 2006 is was simply a story about duty
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2006.htm
that was sent to me. I read it and couldn't help but be moved
by its words.
In 2007 it was a story about "military spouses"
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2007.htm
... we sometimes forget that the sacrifice of the family left
behind is just as great as that of the person overseas.
In 2008 it was a story about the "bond" of Marines.
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2008.htm
In 2009 it was a story about servicemen returning from Afghanistan.
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2009.htm
In 2010 there were two items:
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2010.htm
(1) The Virtual Wall (a tribute to all those lost during the Vietnam
war) and
(2) "Thank You Soldiers" (an original song sung by the 3red Grade
class at Tussing Elelmentary School in Colonial Heights, Virginia.
In 2011 it was a story about the history of Taps,
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2011.htm
that haunting song played at all military funerals.
In 2012 it was a story about The Old Gentleman.
http://kcbx.net/~tellswor/vets2012.htm
This year I want to share something different. So many times we think
of the veterans themselves on this day, and we should absolutely
continue to do so. However, we should also remember their families who
remain at home, without their loved ones. Most of those deployed
return, some do not. This piece is about the children in military
families...
-<>-
>Military Child vs Civilian Child
1. A Civilian child usually dances around or talks during the National
Anthem. A military child stands quietly with his hand over his heart.
2. A civilian child sees race. A military child sees diversity.
3. A civilian child has a best friend in his hometown. A military child
has a best friend on almost every continent.
4. A civilian child sees only the plane flying over. A military child
not only can identify the type of plane flying but knows someone who
works on them.
5. A civilian child sees a person in uniform. A military child can tell
you what branch they are in and what their rank is.
6. A civilian child thinks home is where the heart is. A military child
knows home is where the military sends you.
7. A civilian child lives for tomorrow, and what it might bring. A
military child lives for today, for tomorrow Daddy or Mommy might get
called away again.
8. A civilian child gets to kiss Mommy and Daddy goodnight each night.
A military child sometimes has to kiss a picture of Daddy or Mommy
goodnight.
9. A civilian child talks on the phone for fun. A military child lives
for the short phone calls that happen far to few times.
10. A civilian child can read and write in English. A military child
can read and write in acronyms.
11. A civilian child says "good-bye." A military child says "see you
later."
12. A civilian child will probably go to the same school his entire
life. A military child will probably change schools every 2 years.
13. A civilian child might rarely leave his hometown for anything other
than vacation. A military child will rarely see his "hometown" for
anything other than vacation.
14. A civilian child supports our soldiers. A military child is almost
a soldier.
The next time you say a prayer for our troops, please say a prayer for
their families, especially their children back home, trying to be strong.

>As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer:
"Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home
or overseas. Hold them in Your loving hands and protect them as they
protect us. Also remember their families back at home. They sacrifice
by being away from their loved ones. In Jesus Christ's name, Amen"
Let's all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before
in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.
Remember, we live in the land of the free because of the brave.
(Heroes don't wear capes; heroes wear dog tags.)

>THE VETERAN STANDS
As I sit there on the bleachers,
To watch the parade go by,
I get a lump in my throat,
To see our flag as it flies,
Proudly I stand in tribute,
But when I look around I see,
The only ones standing,
Is the man in the wheelchair and me,
Painfully, slowly, determinedly,
He has struggled to gain his feet,
A man who bravely fought in battle,
So that flag wouldn't fall in defeat,
I can see the tears in his eyes,
With the pride shining through,
As he shows love for his flag,
And for his country, too,
He's one of our many veterans,
One who answered when we called,
He may be in a wheelchair,
But he stands above us all.

>A VETERANS DAY WISH
More than a decade ago, I sat on high bluff in post-midnight darkness
at a place called Chestnut Ridge. The lights of the city flickered in
the distance, contrasted against the vast black space of Lake Erie.
The moment was eerily reminiscent of so many nights I'd spent
protecting the high ground in a place called Vietnam.
It was more eerie than it might have been because behind me was the
Moving Wall -- the traveling half-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial
in Washington DC. On its metal veneer, the names of more than 58,000
Americans spelled out the cost and the tragedy of our nation's longest
war with strings of letters that formed the names that spoke to lives
too little lived and dreams too soon dashed.
There were other veterans with me that night, but I was more keenly
aware of the spirits that moved around the hilltop. They moved in the
cool calm that washed the high ground. They had been confined in the
shiny steel walls of the Wall all day while visitors touched the names
that represented their sacrifice. Occasionally, they seeped into an
unprotected consciousness creating a tear or causing an unpleasant
memory. In the quiet night air, though, they were out in force -- a
real presence in our midst.
I took some solace in the notion that by bringing the Wall to this
spot, I had done something to better help people remember a time most
would rather forget. After all, my war asked nothing of most but
demanded everything from a few. The "most" were uncomfortable
recalling the "few." But the larger issue for me was what would our
service, our suffering, and the sacrifice of the dead mean in the
national consciousness? What lesson could be drawn from what we did?
What legacy would we leave? I had seen such indomitable courage. I
had been party to such incredible carnage. I had seen the absolute
best and the utter worst of man in those dark and bloody jungles. What
would it all mean to a nation that embraced victory like a national
birthright and rejected defeat as a disease?
On that quiet hilltop, I determined that if our experience would serve
as a reminder of the inordinate cost of war -- if our blood could
purchase a measure of hatred for the waste of human life -- if these
names on this Wall could make people understand the futility of combat
as a method of resolving differences -- then we would leave a legacy in
which both the living and the dead could take pride. My dream was not
unlike that of those who sent tens of millions to slaughter in World
War I -- the war to end all wars.
More than a decade has passed between then and now, and the reality of
my naivete still stuns me. Once I was confident that humanity would
recognize the need to end war. Now, I have to fight against the
pessimism that now pervades my thinking as I continue to hope that in
our ability to remember we hold the desire to end war. Events and
circumstances constantly conspire and collide, however, to make us
recall the old wisdom that says, "only the dead have seen the end of
war." I have rarely met a man or woman who doesn't say they are
against war. What I see so few of, though, are those willing to be
warriors for peace. We hold certain things to be worth living for, and
thus, worth dying for Isn't it strange that peace is not among them?
Veterans Day is set aside to celebrate those among us who have borne
the burden of war and have lived. Theirs is a special legacy -- to
carry on with their knowledge and the courage that which they have
endured in the name of national purpose. Let us wish for them today
that they be granted their own peace even as we wish for our own.

>From BizarreNews:
Talk about your bad day. 25-year-old John Knight was
driving his Volvo station wagon down Church Street
through San Francisco's Noe Valley neighborhood at
about 10:30 in the morning when he came across a strange
scene.
A heavyset woman stood wrapped in a blanket, surrounded
by medical personnel.
Suddenly, the woman whipped the blanket off and threw it
at the medics, revealing that she was completely naked,
Knight said. Then she turned around and noticed Knight,
still stopped and now shocked behind the wheel, about 50
feet away.
"She walks directly to me," he said. "She walks up the
hood of my car and she begins stomping on my windshield,
completely naked."
The woman, who Knight estimated to weigh about 250 pounds,
cracked his windshield with the first stomp. She got a
couple more in before plainclothes officers pulled her
off and hand-cuffed her as she screamed, Knight said.
Apparently the woman had stripped on a commuter train
earlier in the morning for no good reason, and it was pure
coincidence that Knight pulled up to that intersection at
that exact moment.
"They (the insurance company) didn't really know what to
make of it." Knight said.

*-- Woman sues NYC over soda arrest --*
NEW YORK - A New York woman is suing the city for putting
her in jail for five days after police searched her when
she bought a soda from a corner store. Catherine Cyrus,
24, of Brooklyn, had just bought a Sprite from a bodega
February 2012 when police surrounded her, asking to see
her identification, the New York Post reported. Police
searched her purchase and, finding only the soda, told her
to leave the area. When she refused, the officers arrested
her, the federal court lawsuit said. She was charged with
disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administr-
ation, and spent five days in jail before being released,
the newspaper said. Judge ShawnDya Simpson dismissed the
case when it came up for trial after an officer claimed
Cyrus tried to strike one of them. Officers never charged
Cyrus with assault and Simpson said the officer's story
was "totally incredible."
*-- Librarian says she was fired for reporting sex incident --*
ESTANCIA, N.M. - A lawyer for a former assistant librarian
in New Mexico said his client lost her job for reporting
two city workers found having sex in the children's
section. Joseph CampBell, attorney for former Estancia
Library employee Jamie Kurz, said his client showed up for
work in August and discovered two city employees -- the
town's head librarian and a maintenance worker -- "engaged
in sexual intercourse on the floor in the children's
section," KRQE-TV, Albuquerque, reported Monday. The
workers told Kurz to be quiet, but she reported the
incident to the city library director and Estancia Mayor
Sylvia Chavez, CampBell said. "The mayor subsequently
talked to Jamie about it, told her that it wouldn't have
any effect on her job," CampBell said. However, Kurz went
on leave when the head librarian returned to work, claiming
a hostile work environment, and was soon fired. An Oct. 10
letter from Chavez to Kurz said she was being fired for
failing to return her key to the library while on leave.
"Your refusal to turn over town property upon request and
as required to ensure uninterrupted library services
shows a lack of cooperation and willingness to work with
supervisors," Chavez wrote. "This behavior constitutes
insubordination and jeopardizes the Town's ability to
serve its citizens." However, CampBell said Kurz believes
her firing was tied to her refusal to keep quiet about the
August incident. CampBell said he plans to file a claim
with the town and a possible whistle-blower lawsuit could
follow.
*-- Swedish school switches from meatballs to meat cubes --*
TRELLEBORG, Sweden - Workers at a Swedish school said
officials gave them approval to switch from traditional
round meatballs to meat cubes. Cafeteria workers at
Soderslstt High School in Trelleborg said constantly
rolling thousands of meatballs by hand was both
time-consuming and potentially injury-causing due to the
strain it put on their wrists, The Local.se reported
Thursday. Kitchen staff chief Anna Malmberg said workers
were given the go-ahead to cut the mince into small cubes
instead of having to roll it into balls. "One of the
students told us they were the ugliest meatballs he'd
ever seen, but the tastiest ones," Malmberg told the
Trelleborgs Allehanda newspaper.

she allegedly videoed their wedding night and left the
recording in their hotel room, news website Okaz al-Youm
reported. The bride, whose name wasn't reported, allegedly
placed a camera in the couple's hotel room without inform-
ing her new husband and recorded more than 50 minutes of
their intimate interactions, Gulf News reported Thursday.
When the couple left the hotel room, the bride left the
camera behind and it was discovered by a hotel employee.
The employee, whose name wasn't reported, viewed the
recording and allegedly posted it online, Gulf News said.
Police arrested the couple and the hotel employee, and
though the groom was freed, both the bride and hotel
employee remained in custody pending an investigation,
Gulf News said. The groom divorced his bride, citing a
violation of his privacy.

>Veteran's Day
I was asked what the difference was between Memorial Day & Veteran's
Day. For those who may not know - Memorial Day is a day to honor those
who died in service to their country. Veteran's day is to honor those
who served in the military.
Be well.
Jack B.
In honor of Veteran's Day and all those who have, and are, serving.

>WHAT IS A VET?
Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a
jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence
inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the
leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in
the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and
women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't
tell a vet just by looking.
What is a vet?
He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating
two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run
out of fuel.
He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose
overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic
scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.
She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to
sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.
He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or
didn't come back AT ALL.
He is the Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has
saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang
members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.
He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and
medals with a prosthetic hand.
He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass
him by.
He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose
presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the
memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor died unrecognized with
them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.
He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now
and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who
wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the
nightmares come.
He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who
offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his
country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to
sacrifice theirs.
He/She is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and
he/she is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of
the finest, greatest nation ever known.
So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just
lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most
cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or
were awarded.

>Semper Fi:
Martin Savidge of CNN embedded with the 1st Marine battalion was
talking with 4 young Marines near his foxhole this morning live on CNN.
He had been telling the story of how well the Marines had been looking
out for and taking care of him since the war started. He went on to
tell about the many hardships the marines had endured since the war
began and how they all look after one another.
He turned to the four and said he had cleared it with their
commanders and they could use his video phone to call home. The 19 year
old Marine next to him asked Martin if he would allow his platoon
sergeant to use his call to call his pregnant wife back home whom he
had not been able to talk to in three months. A stunned Savidge who was
visibly moved by the request shook his head and the young Marine ran
off to get the sergeant. Savidge recovered after a few seconds and
turned back to the three young Marines still sitting with him and asked
which one of them would like to call home first, the Marine closest to
him responded with out a moments hesitation "Sir, if is all the same to
you we would like to call the parents of a buddy of ours, Lance Cpl
Brian Buesing of Cedar Key, Florida who was killed on 3-23-03 near
Nasiriya to see how they are doing". At that Martin Savidge totally
broke down and was unable to speak. All he could get out before
signing off was "where do they get young men like this"

>"In Flanders Fields"
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Written in by John McCrae (1915) After witnessing the carnage of WWI
John McCrae wrote "In Flanders Fields." McCrae, a Canadian, was a
medical officer in the Boer War and World War I.
Where are Flanders Fields?
Some of the bloodiest battles of World War I took place in the areas of
northern France and southwest Belgium known as Flanders and Picardy.
The British front line was determined to keep the Germans from
traversing Flanders and the Ypres river valley to reach the port of
Calais. Troops from both sides were holed up in the Ypres salient, an
outward projection of the battle line. Defending British troops were
vulnerable on three sides; therefore this was a bloody and dangerous
place for a soldier to be.
The destruction from the battles in this area reached beyond the
battlefield to the towns and roads of the area, and led to the
demolition of buildings, roads, and all plant life, leaving only mud.
Where do the poppies come in?
Noticed as early as the Napoleonic Wars, red poppies grew on the graves
of dead soldiers in the fields of northern Europe. Evidently, poppy
seeds will lie underground for years and bloom if they are plowed up.
In the spring of 1915, red poppies flourished in the fields of the
Ypres salient covering the newly dug graves.
Where does the poem come in?
The scenes of the spring battles in the Ypres salient moved John
McCrae, a Canadian doctor, to write "In Flanders Fields." He wrote the
poem as he sat in the dressing area (where wounds were dressed) looking
out at a field of graves. The poem was later published in Punch
Magazine. McCrae died of pneumonia in 1918, a common killer of Great
War soldiers.
Inspired by McCrae's poem, American Moina Michael wore poppies to honor
the war dead. She also began to sell poppies to raise money for
disabled veterans. After meeting Moina Michael in 1920, Frenchwoman
Madame E. Guérin started selling handmade poppies to raise money for
poor children who were living in the aftermath of the Great War. Soon
thereafter Field-Marshall Earl Haig, the former British Commander-
in-Chief, encouraged the selling of paper poppies to raise funds for
veterans. This tradition spread to Canada and then to the United States.

My father was extremely nervous about his first funeral
service as a Navy chaplain, but the undertaker assured him
that he would prompt him. All went well until, at the close,
the undertaker whispered to him to instruct the family to
come up and view the body. "Will the family now come forward
and pass around the bier," said my father.
He cringed inwardly when he heard his own words. Later, as
my father was leaving, he overheard two of the cemetery
workers talking. "I didn't get any beer," one said. "Did
you?"
"You heard the chaplain," the other replied. "It was just
for the family."

For a romantic touch, I washed our sheets with lavender-
scented detergent. When my husband got into bed, he sniffed.
"What's this?" he asked.
"Guess," I said coyly.
"I have no idea," he said. "It smells like the stuff you use
to line the hamster's cage."

In honor of Memorial Day, the teacher I worked with read the
Constitution to her third-grade class. After reading "We the

that meant.
One boy raised his hand and asked, "Is that like 'We da bomb?'"

One snowy evening my brother, a regional police officer,
stopped a car at a roadside check for drunk drivers. "Good
evening, ma'am," he greeted the lady. "How are you this
evening?"
"Fine, thank you," she replied.
My brother continued, "Anything to drink this evening?"
Surprised, the lady answered, "Uh...no, thank you."
