SHANGRALA'S
TRAPPED
INSIDE
A TRUE Whale Of A Tale!
Trapped Inside A Whale!
Michael Packard thought it was going to be just another ordinary day at work
diving for lobsters. He suited up in his diving gear, stepped off the boat, and slipped into the
water off the coast of Massachusetts to do what he had been doing for years - dive to
the ocean floor in search of lobsters. He knew the area. He knew the ocean. And he
knew full well that beneath the surface were creatures that commanded respect and
caution. Yet even after years of commercial diving, nothing could have prepared
him for what happened that morning.
Suddenly, a massive force slammed into him. Within a split second, everything
turned pitch black. Packard felt himself moving inside a confined space, with
something immense pressing in on him from every angle.
His initial thought was terrifying enough: A great white shark attacked me.
But then he noticed something strange. There were no teeth. He didn't feel a
bite. There was no blood. And then came the realization that felt almost
impossible to digest:
He was inside the mouth of a humpback whale. For roughly 30 to 40 seconds,
he was trapped in total darkness, convinced his life was coming to an end.
And the only thing he could think about was his two sons.
An Ordinary Workday Turned Nightmare in Seconds!
Everything was black. He had no idea where the whale was taking him.
And he had no idea if he would ever see the surface again. He was
convinced it was the end. His thoughts immediately shifted to his two
sons, who were 12 and 15 at the time. That was what consumed his mind
above all else. Not his job. Not his boat. Not how he ended up there.
Just his children. He was certain he was about to die and would never
see them again.
Then He Started to Fight. Packard didn't have many options. He was
still wearing his diving gear and breathing from his air tank, but he
had no idea how long he would remain trapped. So he began to move.
He kicked. He writhed.
Humpback whales do not hunt humans. They feed primarily on krill and
small fish, often opening their massive mouths while lunging through
dense schools of prey, swallowing huge volumes of water in the process
before filtering it out through their baleen plates.
Packard was simply - and almost unimaginably - in the wrong place at
the exact wrong time. 30 Seconds That Felt Like an Eternity!
The whale began ascending toward the surface and suddenly, after the
darkness, Packard caught a glimpse of light. Then the Whale Started
Shaking Its Head. When the whale reached the surface, it began
thrashing its head from side to side. Packard was still inside its
mouth. And then, all at once, he was thrown out. Now he was back in
the open ocean. The whale had simply spat him out.
His crew members aboard the boat witnessed the ordeal. They quickly
hauled him back onto the vessel and sped to shore, where he was rushed
to Cape Cod Hospital.
Headlines around the world quickly dubbed Packard "the man who was
swallowed by a whale". Even Jimmy Kimmel Live! used that description.
However, Packard himself insisted on a small but crucial correction:
He wasn't swallowed. He was inside the whale's mouth. And science
backs him up.
Although a humpback whale has an enormous mouth capable of holding
immense volumes of water - and comfortably fitting a human - its
esophagus is remarkably small. It is adapted for consuming krill and
small fish, not human-sized prey.
