LITTLE
OOPS 6!
Life Is Always Full Of Surprises!
Just Another One Of Life's Little Oops! Enjoy! :)
Like This One. What happens on an old Turkey Creek bridge east of Sharon Springs,
Kansas, during a run from Denver to Chicago, when the 57th car on a loaded Union
Pacific coal hopper in the 100-car train experiences an overheated axle bearing
(commonly known as a "hot box") and derails?
Well, it caused a metal support to drop down and grind on the rail, creating
white hot molten metal droppings to spew down onto the track.
The crew noticed the smoke,
stopped the train, and got out to investigate; but by the time they walked the
approximately half-mile distance from the front of the train to the problem car,
the wooden bridge the latter was on had already caught fire.
They unhooked the rest of the train from the cars stopped on the bridge,
leaving six 280,000-pound coal cars to tumble into the creek as flames engulfed
the bridge.
$250,000 = The Lost Coal Cars
$1.8 Million = The Destroyed Bridge
0 Human Injuries / Casualties = PRICELESS!
