Mexico's National Guard has a new recruit, and he is the smallest member
of the entire unit. Meet Comando, a 15-pound Chihuahua who is training
for search-and-rescue missions and already winning hearts.
At just 13 months old, Comando is a far cry from the larger breeds
that make up most of the Military National Guard's approximately 350 working dogs.
But this pint-sized recruit is proving that you don't have to be big to
make a difference.
He Even Has Custom-Made Tactical Gear!
Comando was adopted six months ago in Chihuahua state after his elderly
owners could no longer care for him. Now, he's traded his former life
for a custom vest, helmet, tactical goggles, and even a camera mounted
on his head as he trains for his future search-and-rescue duties.
With his miniature frame and full tactical getup, Comando has earned
plenty of jokes and affectionate praise, including being called the
"goodest operative."
But behind those oversized goggles and that pocket-sized presence is a
little dog with a big job ahead of him. Comando is showing that courage,
dedication, and the ability to make a difference have nothing to do
with how big you are.
Lieutenant Debora Hernandez says Comando challenges stereotypes about
what a service dog should look like, reminding people that there's a
human side to the uniform.
While the other 350 dogs in the unit focus on tracking contraband and
securing national perimeters, Comando successfully executes a nationwide
public relations campaign simply by wearing a tiny uniform and engaging
with the Mexican public.
While his tiny stature and serious-looking equipment have made him
an instant hit online, Comando is already taking on an important role
beyond his training. He participates in civic ceremonies, school visits,
and community outreach events, helping the National Guard connect with
the public.
Comando recently expanded his duties far beyond local community outreach
programs. He participated in the annual Independence Day parade in Mexico
City, marching alongside thousands of soldiers, armored vehicles, and
traditional military working dogs. His appearance at national civic
ceremonies and local school events consistently generates massive public
interest. Children and adults alike gravitate toward the small dog,
allowing officers to distribute educational materials, answer questions,
and build trust in the community.
