Meet Splash - the world's first Search-And-Rescue Otter hunting for missing
people in Florida. With an otter's ability to detect scents underwater, he
has been used by the Martin County's Sheriff Office to dive and find
unrecovered bodies in Florida waterways.
Here Are Awesome Photos Of Him. Enjoy! :)
When we picture a search-and-rescue animal, we almost always picture a dog, nose
down and tail up, working a trail across open ground. There is good reason for
that, because dogs are astonishing at it. Water, though, defeats that whole
approach, and it is here that a far less expected animal has found a role, an
Asian small-clawed otter named Splash.
Splash was trained by a Florida search-and-rescue team, and his specialty is
precisely the thing that stumps a land dog. It sounds impossible until you
understand the mechanism, because scent molecules can get caught in bubbles
rising through the water, leaving a faint trail for a nose sharp enough to
read it.
His nose is more than sharp enough, and crucially it keeps working in exactly
the conditions that blind human searchers. In the murky, sediment-heavy water
where divers can barely make out their own hands, Splash follows a scent trail
that no person could detect.
He turns cloudy, featureless water into something he can actually navigate.
That ability has already been put to real use, with the otter assisting on
more than twenty missions and helping crews narrow their search to the right
stretch of water.
In work where time and precision decide outcomes, an animal that can point
human teams toward the right spot is worth a great deal.
There is something fitting in the choice of animal, because otters are built
for exactly this world, equally at home diving and surfacing, curious and
relentless in the water.
In Splash, that natural talent has been turned toward finding people when it
matters most.
