SHANGRALA'S
WINNIE
THE
POOH -
DISORDERS!
Most of us loved growing up with the classic children's story 'Winnie The Pooh'.
It focuses on a group of friends who live in the Hundred Acre Wood.
When you were a kid, these stories may have been just for fun, but the truth
is that they are based on certain behavioral patterns. According to a study
published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, it turns out that each
of the characters in Winnie The Pooh was written to represent a mental disorder.
This shows us how well we still can get along with each other even if we are not
considered perfect in our society.
Is There A Character You Identify With More? Enjoy! :)
Winnie The Pooh is the star of the story. He's adventurous and extroverted, but
also he has a hard time staying on track, and has an obsessive fixation on honey.
His thoughts are scattered everywhere, he has no orderly schedule, and his life
seems to be made up of random things happening to him.
Winnie the Pooh represents ADHD and has an eating disorder. He is obsessed with
honey and grabs it anywhere he can find it. He also has Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder (OCD). This can be seen when he counts repeatedly and starts all over
when someone interrupts him.
The beloved Eeyore is the character who almost is never happy. He does not
expect anything good to happen around him and is majorly depressive. Hence,
the gray donkey is mostly gloomy, upset and unwilling to participate in
real activities.
The most pessimistic character in the entire Winnie the Pooh
series is Eeyore, who is sarcastic, cynical, gloomy yet wise and observant.
He's definitely the 'downer' of the group, no matter what good things happen
around him. Eeyore is a victim of Deep Depression.
Roo the kangaroo is the little cutie that may seem to be in control of things,
but that's not the case. He gets lost in his world and often gets into complicated
situations. He also goes through moments of utter loneliness, blocking the
world around him from the comfort of his mother's pocket. Roo represents
Autism.
Kanga is the loving mother that keeps her child in her pocket because she is
a kangaroo, but she also shows signs of a 'helicopter parent' - one who cannot
lose eye contact with her child and must wrap it every second of the day. Her
worries about family support also add to the not-so-easy behavior.
Kanga does not let her young ones make decisions and mistakes on their own.
She probably does not want her children to repeat the same mistakes she made
when young. However, her overprotectiveness reaches a point of suffocation.
Kanga suffers from Social Anxiety Disorder.
Rabbit is one of the most neat and organized cartoon characters you will ever
meet. He always has to have everything around him organized, and he can not
stand the mess. This is the same with one of the Winnie the pooh disorders.
The over organized Rabbit suffers from a disorder called the OCD, which is an
abbreviation for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Rabbit represents OCD.
Tigger is the energetic friend that cannot sit still for a second. He is always
looking for the next thing: what new adventure is around the corner, or what he
can do to entertain himself. This again is the same with one of the Winnie the
Pooh disorders.
Tigger, one of the most loved characters of the show also suffers
from a disorder called the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. One can
spot Tigger jumping around everywhere as he is unable to control his hyperactivity.
He is also prepared to taste food regardless of what it may contain. In addition
to this, Tigger is seen as extremely impulsive and does things in the spur of the
moment. The tiger is a highly hyperactive animal and a risk-taker. The tiger
represents ADHD.
Cute little pink Piglet has a sweet heart, but extreme anxiety dominates it.
Whenever something happens - like a voice or movement - he immediately feels
the need to hide. It is easy to identify with Piglet's need for a peaceful
and relaxed environment. GAD which stands for Generalized Anxiety Disorder,
is where he constantly is seen as worrying and stressing about one thing or
the other, which could be embedded in his low self-esteem starting from an
early age. A self-esteem injury during his youth may have caused him to
experience high levels of anxiety, stress and nervousness.
In addition to this, Piglet also experiences problems with his speech. The
distinct speech impediment, in other words known as stuttering, can be
related to the irrational anxiety that piglet seems to suffer. Piglet
cannot stop thinking of the worst case scenario and finds himself helpless
to his condition. This is the most common form of symptom found in patients
who suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Piglet represents anxiety.
Owl is quite a bright character in the Winnie the Pooh series. He is the
wisest and most intelligent character, although he often gets spellings
wrong. He usually mixes up two letters or swaps the letters around.
Sometimes, Owl has been spotted to write the words back to front.
The Owl suffers from a condition called Dyslexia.
Christopher Robin may differ from the other in the fact that he is a human
being, but his personality also hints an illness. All his friends are
completely a fiction of his imagination: in reality they are just toys.
Christopher's prolific imagination sends him into a whole other world. He
is a shining example of Schizophrenia.
Christopher Robin imagines most of the characters to being a part of his
hallucinations. The characters are formed in his mind which is a clear
symptom of Schizophrenia. This is commonly found in those individuals who
have trouble expressing their feelings in the real world. The characters
he envisions represent feelings that he may have experienced early on in
life.
However, since Christopher Robin is only a child, it may be that he
is only learning how to function in socially, and interact with individuals.
Hence, each character that he has made up may be a form of a feeling or an
experience that he is still learning to cope with. Christopher Robin's over
imagination represents Schizophrenia.
The cast of 'Winnie the Pooh' is a complex group of individuals, each of
whom represents a different mental illness. Now that you know this, you may
look at these stories in a completely different way.
